As Art Pepper readied himself to die--or further pushed himself toward the brink of death--he seemed determined to say everything possible, quickly and forthrightly. In doing so, he created an explosive ream of albums for the Galaxy Records label, most of them featuring Pepper with only the slender backing of a piano-bass-drums setup. He was all over the sessions, picking ripe old tunes and letting fly on them, spinning his silken lines into adventurous nuggets that curbed and then redirected his playing. On Straight Life and on several of the Galaxy sessions (collected in their blessed entirety on the 16-CD The Complete Galaxy Recordings), he has the rhythmic backing of Billy Higgins on drums. Like Pepper, Higgins can whisper his parts and then shout them out with clapping power. These are all tunes Pepper fans will know but they're tremendously fresh, as is their interpreter--who would die less than three years later. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Music.......2005-06-28
This is one of the definitive records made by altoist Art Pepper. Eventhough Art had many personal problems, he managed to consistently produce records of a very high calibre.
The music here is either furious and up tempo (Surf Ride, Straight Life) or immensely emotional. Close the lights, sit back and listen to "Nature Boy" and "September Song". They will blow you away with emotion as Art explores and searches with his sax. If this does not move your heart then nothing will.
This is simply brilliant and passionate music which few other artists could match.
Heartbreakingly Beautiful.......2004-04-22
What everyone else has said here, I wholeheartedly endorse. This is a hauntingly beautiful album, and every real jazz fan knows this. Pepper bares his soul and breaks your heart, and everyone involved--pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Red Mitchell, drummer Billy Higgins--seems to have recognized that this session was something special: None of these great musicians has ever sounded better or more committed than they do here. This is Art's cri de coeur, his tragic lament for a wasted life, his proud determination to make amends. He reaches deep and gives us the most moving performances ever. Thank you, Art, and may your troubled soul rest in peace.
What Great Jazz Is All About.......2004-03-23
This is a great album, really deep and heartfelt, like everything Art Pepper did. The other soloists--Flanagan, Mitchell, Higgins--are just as great as Pepper, really subtle and responsive. The tracks "Nature Boy" and "September Song" are particularly touching--not stale old standards, but transmuted into something profound. It's like hearing them for the first time. I love this album.
Favorite Pepper Album.......2003-08-09
I cannot hope to improve on John Stark's very perceptive and eloquent review. But I would like to second it.
This is the finest album from Pepper's late period, and my personal favorite. His renditions of Kurt Weill's "September Song" and Eden Ahbez's "Nature Boy," in particular, are hauntingly lovely and heartbreaking, with superbly delicate solos from pianist Tommy Flanagan and bassist Red Mitchell (the most shamefully underrated bassist in jazz history), and thoughtful brushwork, as always, from drummer Billy Higgins. The hugely enjoyable "Make A List" sounds like a Latin-tinged Vince Guaraldi tune, and the rollicking version of Pepper's classic tune "Straight Life" presented here is definitive.
I have listened to this album at least 100 times over the past year: it never fails to move me deeply. A real treasure.
A Late Pepper Masterpiece.......2003-07-02
The sensitive interplay between Art Pepper, Tommy Flanagan, Billy Higgins and Red Mitchell make this 1979 session a classic from Art Pepper's "late" period, when he emerged from the seemingly irreversible oblivion of heroin and prison to once again scale the musical heights he had reached earlier in recordings such as "Modern Art."
Art Pepper was not a jazz pioneer. He invented no new approaches to the music, and it is too easy to deconstruct his playing into the sum of influences that are obvious to educated ears.
On this recording (and on nearly everything else he ever recorded) he demonstrates that the greatness of a jazz performance is based on far more than the daring innovations that win critical accolades and ample space in books and essays on the history of jazz.
Pepper's performance on "September Song" demonstrates what really matters in jazz: eloquent expression of emotion. Pepper poured his heart and soul into this ballad, as his own days dwindled down to a precious few. His solos here -- along with incandescent solo breaks from Flanagan and Mitchell -- are among the most heartrending things he ever did.

Genuine Jazz for Everybody.......2006-09-15
CTI Records' early 1970s catalogue is an embarrassment of riches, with nearly all the brightest lights of the preceding decade appearing repeatedly as leaders and/or sidemen on well-balanced albums which for the most part manage to be both artistic and accessible. Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard was one of the label's biggest stars, and this 1970 blowing session (his second CTI LP) serves as a fine case in point. Surrounded by fellow ex-Blue Note Wunderkinder (Herbie Hancock and Joe Henderson), Miles Davis rhythm section alumni (Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette) and the tasty picking of a young George Benson, Hubbard riffs through two extended original jams in characteristically titanic fashion, slowing down to display his matchless sensitivity on a light, lovely cover of "Here's That Rainy Day." All hands deliver a fine, funky performance, which is happily free of the hit-or-miss orchestrations which CTI employed on most of its releases at the time, including many of Hubbard's. Classic early fusion of a decidedly listenable variety, STRAIGHT LIFE is a great way for pop and rock fans to get themselves into jazz, and for jazz fans to remind themselves what it was that made them fall in love with the genre in the first place. Hot!
oh, boy!!.......2006-03-23
this is one of the albums that makes anyone who says george benson is washed up look like a big stupid jerk. cti in the seventies was the label for jazz as far as i'm concerned, this album is packed tight with incredible jams.
Slammin'..........2006-02-25
This is one of the most hard hitting jazz albums I've ever heard. The band assembled for "Straight Life" pretty much explains why: Joe Henderson on sax, George Benson on guitar, Herbie Hancock on piano/keyboards, Ron Carter on bass, and Jack DeJohnette on drums. (Weldon Irvine is even given credit for playing tambourine!). Almost everyone that plays on this album had recorded with Miles Davis at some time or another, and Freddie Hubbard ended up with a monster of an album in incorporating all that talent into one group. The seventeen minute title track is awesome; all the instrumentalists are in top form and turn in inspired solos. Joe Henderson in particular blew me away on this song. His solos are ridiculous here; I have some of his solo stuff and his playing on those discs doesn't compare to how he played here. George Benson also is a standout with his creative solo and occasional flurries of notes. Jack DeJohnette lays down a solid beat throughout. "Mr Clean" was written by Weldon Irvine (also worth checking out is Irvine's own version from the album "Liberated Brother", if you can find a copy) and continues the rapid fire soloing and mood of track one. Hubbard's playing throughout this song is fluid and fiery. "Here's That Rainy Day" slows things down but ends the album on a pleasant note. This was one of the first CD's by Freddie Hubbard that I ever got and has remained one of my favorites. If you are a fan of jazz in any form I can't recommend this disc enough.
Nice One From Freddie!.......2005-07-27
the first 30 seconds are a little strange as freddie blows like crazy and then a drum roll is played. . . again. . . again. on first listen, i was scared. the first two cuts are long and funky. the groovy foundation is set up quick on both tunes, and then it's solo after solo. this isn't as bland as i make it sound. it's actually pretty exciting, but it's hit and miss. when it misses it's because the groove gets lost and, as you might expect, some of the solos are better than others. the playing is consistently good though and the solos are really creative and the artists aren't scared to venture into the unknown. the third track is a nice and tight ballad with trumpet, bass and guitar. it doesn't really fit the style of the rest of the cd, but it's still good and may be the best tune on the album. as usual for cti recordings, the supporting band is top notch.
Not his best work.......2005-02-11
There are definitely some great moments on this album, and the rendition of "Here's That Rainy Day" is one of the best you'll find anywhere. But the rest of this album is mainly one-chord jazz-funk jamming that wears thin pretty quickly. Hubbard's other big CTI album, Red Clay, generally gets a lot more attention, and for good reason: it covers much of the same territory as Straight Life and then some, and sounds more inspired to boot. Skip this and pick up Red Clay instead; it's definitely the crown jewel in Hubbard's discography.

Standup comedian, actress, and singer Lea DeLaria presents a less confrontational image here than she did on 1994's Bulldyke in a China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident, and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little-girl-lost innocence to harder-edged tones, both suited to the opening "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd." With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, "I've Got Your Number" heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. "Cool" is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In "With Every Breath I Take," we get to imagine every late night smoky bar in every old Hollywood film we've ever seen--while it is pastiche, the characterization is startlingly evocative.
DeLaria sums it up with "All That Jazz," confidently suggesting, following her recent twin roles in the lavishly acclaimed 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Show, that this girl just wants to have fun playing bad. When she sings "Life Has Been Good to Me," she has such an upbeat twinkle, you suspect she means every word. --Gary S. Dalkin
Customer Reviews:
if you like female jazz vocalists you'll love this album.......2004-07-27
I wish Delaria would put out more albums like this one. Her voice and interpretation of the songs on the album are really great and withstand lots of repeat plays. Highly recommended. Many of the cuts are worth 5 stars, but I didn't really like all of her song choices, so that's why I rated the album 4 stars.
Everyone does it, and seldom as well..........2004-04-10
All I can say is...WOW.
When my partner and I saw Lea perform her routine in P-town, she wowed us with a stunning version of one of my all-time favorites, "The Ballad of Sweeny Todd." We bought her CD on the spot and it stayed in my car's CD player for weeks on end (and then I only took it out because I had to switch cars).
I enjoyed the whole album, but I found myself playing the first track over and over, and even singing it in the shower. I must disagree with the "Cigar" review on all counts, at least regarding this track. The song lends itself so beautifully to swingin' jazz I can't believe nobody thought of it before. But I'm glad no one has, because Lea DeLaria knocks it out of the park. The smooth delivery is perfect for the dry humor of the lyrics, her belts are such a perfect blend of head and chest it sends chills up my spine, and the arrangement is spot-on. The best part - it stands up beautifully to repeat listenings; I just can't grow tired of this rendition. The opening track alone is worth twice the price of this CD.

Well done with a couple tiny flaws.......2004-12-21
The overall rendering of Godsmack's hard rock style to String Quartet was well done. Any true Godsmack fan need not bother reading any further into my review, Trust me you'll want this! Their are a couple flaws:
The solos are awesome, But I think they could have been a little faster and heavier.
The actual songs on the album(even though they are good)Well I think they should have went more random direction. Instead they focus mainly on more popular songs.
But thats basically it, But don't think this is a bad CD. All godsmack fans and even curious Classical string fans will like this one.
I myself listen to this album often.

Product Description
Designed with the busy schedules of teachers in mind, this powerful spoken word CD is 28 minutes of straight-forward, life changing affirmations over beautifully uplifting music. How do you use the CD? It should be listened to every workday, as part of a routine, most likely while the listener does other things. It can be used as you get dressed, as you drive to work, or listened to in your classroom before students arrive. It does not take away time from your day, but enrich the time you would normally spend on other things. I (Carrie A. Chapman) am still a classroom teacher and am enjoying my work more every day thanks to the creation of this CD. I hope you will find it equally inspirational for yourself, or the lucky individual for whom you are purchasing it.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and Effective.......2005-08-12
I first heard about this product on a teacher chatboard. While I was initially skeptical, but I listened to the audio samples and decided to give it a try. I teach at a year round school, and even with track breaks, need inspiration to get through the summer months. I have had it for a few months and really feel a difference in my outlook throughout the day. One funny (but good) thing: there is an affirmation about staying organized, and it must have gone straight to my subconscious because my typically messy desk and work spaces have become much cleaner! I am so thankful and suprised for this added benefit!
Positively Refreshing!.......2005-01-28
I think this CD is a great idea! I am a parent who has noticed several teachers looking drained and overworked. I bought this CD to give to the teachers of my children. I feel better sending my children to school knowing they are being taught by teachers who are positive and refreshed. This CD isn't just a gift for the teacher, but a gift for the whole class!
Positively empowering!.......2005-01-28
This is a great Cd to listen to on the way to work. It is relaxing and sets up such a positive start to the busy day. I am not a teacher but it empowers me to get on with what I love to do and gives meaning to feeling positive about life. I am giving this Cd to teachers that I work with in hopes that they will remain happy and feel good about what they do when there is so much stress in their day. Thank you Miss Chapman!
An Inspiration to all!.......2005-01-27
What an inspiring idea! This is great CD for everyone , not just for teachers. The thoughts portrayed on the CD are uplifting, energizing, and yes are definately Fired up! As a teacher myself, it reminds me of why I do what I am doing! We all need a wake up call at some point, and this will do the trick! The music adds a wonderful, soothing touch!
Out of this WORLD!! Not just for Teachers.......2005-01-26
What a wonderful idea this was! Not only teachers can use this. We all, who work in the public in some sort, need these affirmations daily. What an excellent way to begin your day, get yourself ready for all that is ahead. I can't wait to see what Miss Chapman does next, INCREDIBLE. I plan to give this as a gift to ALL my teacher and would be teacher friends.

WARNING WARNING, this disc was not well prepared!!!.......2005-01-17
In Spain they do not abide by our copyright laws, so this assorted compilation of tracks was likely taken from other records -and just copied!!! Think I'm crazy? There is a company called BLUE MOON that does this very thing, releasing 100's of unauthorized recordings, often straight from lp's (very crude) and with no remastering, personal, or time reference; that's what these cds from Spain are all about. Beware the sound is so bad.... jb
