Invisible In Plain Sight.......2007-07-01
Anat Cohen was voted both "Up and Coming Jazz Musician of 2007" and "Best Clarinet Player of 2007" by the global Jazz Journalists Association....and yet there isn't an editorial review of her album on Amazon? What the #%*&? Anyway... this is a beautiful album. Not straight ahead jazz at all for the most part. It is beautiful songs, wonderfully arranged, with plenty of first rate improvisation on the way through. Ms. Cohen has an rich, full tone and a very personal and expressive voice on all the instruments she plays on this CD: clarinet, alto, soprano, and tenor. After hearing the CD I have to wonder what the title means. "Noir" is french for "dark" or "black". Several of the song titles are resonant with the title -- "No Moon At All" i.e. dark, "You Never Told Me That You Care" i.e. you kept me in the dark, "Ingenuo" which is Portuguese for "naive" i.e. "in the dark"...and obviously "Cry Me A River" and Cry are "dark songs. Also...some of the arrangements are "film noir" worthy particularly "No Moon At All" and "You Never Told Me That you Care". And... the composers of most of the tracks are people of color. Maybe she means to honor them. Perhaps the CD is the first in a series of CDs and this is the "dark" age. Hmmm... who knows. I hope she makes a follow up CD to this one. It was a joy...starting with the packaging...before I even heard the music.
Musique Noir.......2007-06-29
This came out in 2007, and I heard it on NPR, Morning Edition. It was an interlude, and they used a bit of "La Comparsa," which sounded like the "Habanera" from Carmen, and "No Moon At All." You can look these interludes up and it links to Amazon in case you want to buy it. I think NPR might get a cut of the action if anyone buys it as a result of their playing it. So, I was hoping to find out more about Anat Cohen & the Anzic Orchestra, but there wasn't much further info. I have a friend from Israel, and she is named Anat. I guess that is a Hebrew name, and Cohen, you can't get more Jewish than that. They can trace themselves all the way back to the tribe of Levi. I imagine that this Anat plays keyboards, and she has horn players. It didn't sound like a full orchestra to me, more like a combo with horns. They call the group the Anzic Orchestra, though. I would describe their music, from the two clips I heard, as jazz, with a world music influence. I think they might also use EWI, which is Electronic Wind Instrument. I bet they have a MySpace page.

2nd counterpoint.......2007-06-01
I don't write reviews for anything on Amazon, but I am this time to back up what was said in the (at this time) 2 positive reviews and as a counterpoint to the one negative review. One of the positive reviews states you'll either get it or you won't; obviously the reviewer who did not like it does not get it. In his short review he states that this is "light jazz" and goes on to lament his inability to stop time and live in a very small dimension (i'm paraphrasing a bit). While there are tracks that could be played on light jazz stations, the same could be said of some of Miles' or Coltranes' ballads, but that doesn't make them light jazz, just as this is not. It is a shame that Amazon still does not have her 2 2007 releases available. I had to go the Anzic Label website to buy them. You won't be sorry in purchasing her music as she weaves a lot into her playing that -yes, not everyone will get.
a counterbalance.......2007-05-11
To be honest - I haven't heard this whole album - just the lengthy clips on the amazon listening station. But I was curious, having read strong notices in May 2007 in the New York Times - and her stuff is lovely - AND the one-star screed posted by the other reviewer is so far off base that I needed to post a counter-balance to that wrier's one-star notice, which has much more to do with his (?) personal biases than this music. This is fine contemporary jazz with heart, soul, wit, chops and verve.
No Balls.......2007-05-07
This music is what would pass for "jazz" today, better known as "light jazz." I say, it has no "balls." The jazz I know, with roots in bebop, is much more vital, and hardly played today live. I don't see what the fuss is about, if there is any, unless it is the attempt of the record companies to promote a woman. No problem with women jazz players. They are around, but please, record companies, don't just try to promote the person. Wait until the music is ready. And don't call it jazz. Jazz, as such, is kinda dead. The best stuff is reissues.

Album Description
Though held in high esteem by '60s psych aficionados, this Houston band never met with much commercial success, only notching the #91 hit 'San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native)' in 1968. But part of the reason for that is also the reason these albums, their first two and only essential releases, are so much fun to listen to; this was a band with big ambitions, working classical and jazz influences and unusual instrumentation into the rock format well before such a thing became commonplace, pointing the way towards the prog-rock movement to come. We've added notes featuring quotes from multi-instrumentalist Rob Landes that set the scene...a Collectors' Choice Music exclusive! Includes `Imitation Situation 1 (Toccata and Fugue)/Where Do You Go?'; `San Franciscan Girls (Return of the Native)'; `Ninety-Nine and One-Half'; `Man Who Paints the Pictures'; `Filigree and Shadow'; `The Sun Also Rises'; `Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out'; `Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing'; `Unlock My Door'; `Come with Me (Rainsong)'; `Man Who Paints the Pictures II'; `What Time Did You Say It Is in Salt Lake City?'; `Don't Come Crying to Me Girl'; `Fever; Grand Candy Young Sweet'; `Jokes are for Sad People'; `I've Never Seen Evergreen'; `Peace of Mind', and `Death Is the Dancer'.
Customer Reviews:
My hat's off to Neil.......2007-07-07
I've always found a good way to find new music is to find out who the bands you listen to enjoy. So when I came across a reference to this band in Neil Peart's book Roadshow I decided to look them up and wound up buying the album. All I can say is "Thanks Neil!" This is a solid and thoroughly enjoyable band. While they may have not been at the forefront of the psychedelia movement they are certainly worth a listen. The material runs from bluesy guitar driven tracks to laid back piano pieces, with horns, strings, and organ adding jazz and classical touches. At his heaviest the vocalist could have fronted Deep Purple, while in his softer moments I hear a touch of Neil Diamond. Most of the material is original, but they cover the likes of Wilson Pickett and the Beatles. The end result is an album that doesn't quite make the A list, but certainly shouldn't be forgotten.

A great spin!!! Two thumbs up!!! Five stars!!! A+
an early gem in psyc rock////.......2006-11-17
i traded for this lp when it first came out and i was hungry for the new and classy rock approaches/this filled the ticket and i listened to it over and over again/it contains variety and has a great flow/i recommend these pieces for anyone who enjoys a solid psyc approach that is very accessable and creative/i put this work up there with the first deep purple and moby grape because it is timeless, fresh and an exceptional listen even years later/i won't take this one out of the house; too precious/you might give 'bangor flying circus' a listen, as it is also a classic in my humble opinion/with the bonus of getting the second album on one cd,this is a great deal/

Ferry's Mixed Bag.......2006-04-27
For me, Bryan Ferry's second solo album is a bit uneven in the quality of song choices. I find most of these selections rather boring, even with Ferry's unique arrangements and vocal stylings present. But though half of the CD is a little uninspired, there are five songs that make this worth purchasing. The best songs are the first and last ones. "The In Crowd" is handled perfectly with just the right amount of camp and humor. Also a bit humorous are the versions of "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" and "Fingerpoppin'". "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is touching and lovely. Finally, the title track is one of Bryan's best original songs with its unusual time changes and catchy melody. If you dig this CD, pick up his first solo outing, "These Foolish Things".

Odd-ball or goof-ball?.......2001-09-01
This is one heck of a strange album. I'm not really sure what to make of it, and I think that's a good thing. Sometimes, I find myself oddly moved by the songs. Ferry's quavering take on "Smoke Gets in your Eyes" IS weird, but almost definitive. It raises goosebumps. Sometime, I find myself laughing at the album. Ferry sings "What A Wonderful World" like he's mad at the song. It's not really a bad thing, but I just wonder what he was thinking or what sound he was going for. "You are My Sunshine" displays the silly-serious dichotomy within the same song: at times, it's touching, at times laughable. It seems like Ferry set out to prove that some songs are just SO good, no matter how strangely you sing them, you can't diminish thier power. That sentiment, in fact, sums up this album. Definitely odd,(even by Ferry/Roxy standards) probably goofy, but to my ear, excellent in its own idiosyncratic way. Camp and schmaltz have always been a part of the Ferry/Roxy music pantheon, and they are played to the forefront here. That said, the musicianship is fantastically professional, the arangements deep and eclectic, the recording (of course) pristine, and the title track (a Ferry original) one of the best things he's ever sung.
For extra laughs, check out the liner notes. The credit "Cover Concept By Bryan Ferry" really had me giggling. I could just imagine him saying (in... British accent) "hey guys, I'm so damn handsome, Let's just get a shot of me dressed like the Great Gatsby with a come-hither-look on my face standing in front of a swimming pool. That would make a great cover." And you know what? In a way, it did?
Beautiful, jazzy covers by a master!.......2001-07-24
"Another Time, Another Place" is an interesting selection of Ferry's unmatchable arrangements of cover tunes. My favorite piece on the album is "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," a slightly more upbeat arrangement than usually seen for the song. Other notable cuts include "Funny How Time Slips Away," done as a barrelhouse blues piece, and a jazz version of "Help Me Make It Through the Night." Fans of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music will certainly enjoy this collection.
Good stuff.......2001-04-10
Are you kidding??!! Ferry's version of "You are my sunshine" is one of the highlights of this excellent album. The gospel choir compliments his vocals perfectly.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The movie version of The Rocky Horror Show has turned into such an enduring cult success that it has pretty much obliterated the fact that it all started with a stage show. And now Richard O'Brien's musical is back on stage, where some say it truly belongs (it was nominated for the category Best Revival of a Musical in the 2001 Tony Awards). With a great cast that includes Dick Cavett, Alice Ripley (Janet), Tom Hewitt (Frank 'N' Furter), and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Magenta), the revival fires on all cylinders. Note that while Joan Jett was in the cast as Columbia, she's not on the CD (Kristen Lee Kelly is). But Lea DeLaria, last seen stealing the show in On the Town, more than compensates by playing both Eddie (Meat Loaf in the movie!) and Dr. Scott--and doing great by both. As a bonus, the song "Once in a While" is back after being cut from the movie. Bursting with energy, this recording brings the rock back in Rocky. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite cast recordings.......2007-01-17
This was the first Rocky Horror album I've ever listened to besides the movie soundtrack. Despite the lack of Joan Jett as Columbia and the 2nd Usherette, this album is sweet. Daphne-Rubin Vega is perfect as Magenta. And Tom Hewlett 's interpretation as Frank N. Furter is just in sync with the character. But he's still no Tim Curry. And the rest of the cast is sublime. And with Dick Cavett as the Criminologist and famed lesbian comedienne Lea DeLaria as both Eddie and Dr. Scott is just excellent.
Thougt You Were The Candyman Didn't ya freggy!.......2006-06-22
I thought that this was gonna be just another edition of the Rocky Horror Show. But boy was I wrong.I loved it they really modernized and gave it more of a Rock flavor than in the original play which was more pop.I just loved how they had the Overture and Space shipa partof the cd.They really recreated great for broadway. When i heard that broadway was doing Then Rocky Horror Show I didn't know what to think.Because Rocky Horror had been an off-broadway show for many years. The thought of it being onBroadway was just amazing Because people back in the 70's and 80's always thought that The Rocky Horror Show was much too trashy to be put on Broadway.Because you always think about broadway plays as being classy and eligent. They didn't want a play about Sex and Horror and Gay Transvestites. But this was just a head turner.I loved it.It's definitely 5 stars. The cd quality was great. It was so professionally done and it was great.I think any RHS Fan will love it.This was no candyman!
The Rockiest Recording to Date.......2006-06-07
This 2000 Broadway revival of the cult classic THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW boasts a completely re-vamped orchestration of Richard O'Brien's score. This is certainly the most rock-fused version of these songs to date, and right from the "Overture" the listener can assume this. Many may not be able to accept this harder, bolder score and I myself am a bit skeptical, considering the more piano-driven and sci-fi sounding orchestrations of the film soundtrack or Roxy cast recording. However, it is so interesting to hear these songs done like this that I cannot help but enjoy it. The performances are half-and-half. Daphne Rubin-Vega belts out the opening number in that great gravelly voice she has, and Raul Esparzza sends chills down my spine every time I hear his two great solo moments ("The darkness must flow down the river...." and "Frank 'N' Furter, it's all over..."). Sebastian LaCause is amazing as Rocky, as thankless a part that is. Eddie and Dr. Scott being portrayed by a woman (Lea DeLaria) is one of the strangest casting decisions ever and is too distracting to be able to even listen to her (his? I don't know!!!) songs: "Hot Patootie" and "Eddie's Teddy." Tom Hewitt does his best as Frank 'N' Furter, but the character was so well defined by Tim Curry in the film (one of the most underrated performances ever) that one can't help but ignore him. I'd say that this recording is something every ROCKY HORROR fan should listen to; it just all depends on whether you like the new or original orchestrations.
Good recording, bad show........2006-03-10
Rocky Horror is an American institution. It's indelible, unforgettable, and entirely unique. But without the audience participation, the show is revealed - it's simply not very good. It's a passable (if dated) parody of '50s B-movies with a transvestite main character and some halfway decent songs. The show lives with and dies without an audience. The lyrics, the characters - nothing is half as fun without the audience throwing and shouting and bantering right along.
That said, this is a VERY good recording of what's there. Tom Hewitt does as good a job as anyone trying to fill Tim Curry's sequined heels, and brings some nice twists to the table instead of going the Curry-imitation route. Raul Esparza as Riff-Raff is electric - his rendition of "Time Warp" is unlike anything else you're likely to hear on a cast recording. He blasts it right into outer space, screaming like the world's going to end. Daphne Rubin-Vega is plenty of fun as Columbia, giving a nicely sinuous and raw-edged sexiness to the role. The orchestra gives their all to the new arrangements, and they sound crystal clear.
It's definitely the best recording of the show available, even sans Tim Curry.
Oh Daphne!.......2005-12-29
Most of the reviews have it right here - this production wasn't really Rocky at it's best. That being said, I must say that Daphne Ruben-Vega as magenta is probably one of the most interesting, refreshing, and note worthy things about this recording. Very cool in that regard.
That's All...

The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Customer Reviews:
Only half the songs of the original set!!.......2007-01-17
Although I love the CDs, I was disappointed that there were only about half of the songs I thought there would be. I bought the original double cassette set back in the early 90's and when I found the CDs with the same name and cover, I thought I was getting the same thing only on CD. But the Cassettes had twice as many songs, including Let it Snow,Have Yourself a merry Little Christmas,The First Noel, Jingle Bells by Jim Reeves, The Christmas song by the Carpenters and so many others!!
Its all Christmas.......2007-01-09
It reminded me of Christmas as a child. I played this all throughout the holidays.
A Good Basic Collection.......2006-02-11
This is a good, basic collection of Christmas Music. As a general rule, Time-Life has selected what is probably the definative artist/arangement of each song.
My only complaints are that there are only 24 songs on two disks and one or two of them are not ones that I would have picked (not my style).
Overall, it's a good set that I would recommend to anyone who wants to start a collection.
cd reviews.......2006-01-15
this cd was very good, much recommended
Poor Quality.......2005-12-05
The only good thing about this collection is the inclusion of so many Christmas standards. I was very disappointed in the quality of the recordings, they obviously need digital inhancement.

Customer Reviews:
Killer packs raw tenderness into these. .......2006-12-31
The Killer is My Man. Jerry Lee was a rocker when I was in highschool. When I got older I moved into classical music and opera. In the last decade I have been listening to country as well. And that's where I rediscovered the Killer. He is the Best. When he sings country standards he makes them his own, making me forget who first made the song famous. On this CD Jerry Lee puts his own stamp on two famous Merele Haggard standards, done differently but as well as Hag. Jerry Lee sings with open human abandon, which makes him so easy to love, his songs so easy to relate to. He is also a genius. When I was a girl he was thought to be too naughty, but my life experience has shown that we are on the same field, no one better than another. However, musically speaking, Jerry Lee is the Best. Listen to him and stomp and weep.
Killer Country.......2004-11-28
In the late 1960s Jerry Lee Lewis moved back to the music he grew up with--country music. This disc brings together 2 of his very best country albums for Smash/Mercury plus few cuts from a third. The music is fine late 1960s honky tonk style, with excellent readings of some Merle Haggard, Webb Pierce, and Jimmie Rodgers songs. Some of Lewis' finest country titles are here, including "Another Time, Another Place." I especially enjoy his performance with Linda Gail Lewis on "We Live In Two Different Worlds," simply one of the best songs Fred Rose ever wrote. Of course some rockabilly rowdiness slips in, it would not be the Killer without it. Essential country music for the true country fan.
A Great Cd.......2004-04-28
It's Sad that "The Killer" is always over looked, but this cd makes his statement of "Elvis may be the greatest, but I'm the best." true. "There stands the glass," and "Waiting for a train." Is enough reason to buy this cd alone. The problem of why he is often overlooked may have to do with the amount of poor quality bootleg cds that bares his name. Unlike Elvis who's estate clamped down on the bootleg and poor quaility music, Jerry Lee Lewis's bootlegs are all over the place and his great studio work is hard to find. This is impart do to the many different labels that he has been signed to. I hope at some point he will get control of his music catalog and re-release his great studio work from the sun records era and those of his country recordings era, but until that happens this cd is a great place to start.
Some of his best work, and thus among THE BEST.......2003-06-06
These recordings are among the most commercially successful country records ever done. Moreover, they are among the most artistically successful recordings done by anyone doing straight bar brand country music. JLL just kills these songs, he makes them all personal, he makes them all live, and makes you believe he has lived them.
Contrary to what some others say, JLL has been doing his own interpretations of the country classics since his original sun records the 1950s. His version of Crazy Arms (from 56 or 57 I believe) redefined the song. his version of You Win Again did something rare. He took a song away from Hank Williams. Today if you played or sang Hanks version of the song anywhere, it wouldnt be recognized, and wouldn't be as good as the standard way JLL does it. He did all kinds of country standards during the late 50s and early 1960s when Sun had him doing hundreds of recordings to be salted away until he made a come back.
JLL's work in the 1960s before these country recordings was not "in the wilderness." Some of the rock albums he did for Mercury Smah and Mercury represent some of the best rock and rockabilly recordings ever made, more mature musically, but wilder than things he did in the 1950. Get the two live recordings, one from Panther Hall in Houston, the other from Birmingham if you want to see the light.
It is interesting that these country side are a triumph of JLL as a singer. he barely plays the piano on some selections, on the last selections he plays no piano at all, but these are all classics. Anyone around anywhere where any music was coming off a radio or a juke box anywhere during the late 1960s and eary 1970s heard these songs.
This is among Jerry's best. That means it is among the world's greatest.
Dont forget JLL is still rocking his life away at 66 years old he is still pounding that piano!
killer country.......2003-06-01
Jerry Lee finally made it to Finland 10 years ago. And the audience loved him. Not so much for his old rockers (his age started to show on those numbers) but for the real country tunes that he suddenly started to play. The audience in the huge Hartwall arena listened in awe: this was a man who had walked through hell and made a mess out of his personal life in the early 60's, then made a comeback and in the early 90's could still sing about heartbreak and being on the dole like nobody else on this planet. A stunning and captivating performance! And this album, this 2fer is just great, it has some of those songs he sang that night, like "What made Milwaukee famous" (we Finns love that one!)and the ironic "She even wake me up...". They say Jerry Lee was a bad boy. Maybe so, but he sure gave us some great music!
