rare gems.......2007-07-03
This series is incredible! Vol 14 is one of my favorites.
I don't think you'll find Rubber Rodeo's "Anywhere with you" anywhere else - this is an amazing, under-rated song. Two other great rarities are Never Never by the Assembly and Every Word Means No by Let's Active.
Other don't-miss songs are Tenderness, One Night in Bangkok (Chess is touring around in summer 2007 - can you believe it?), Voices Carry, and Can't Get Enough of You Baby.
If you love the 80s & are on a limited budget (I only wish I could have the whole set!), this one and Vol 1 are the ones to get.
Will The Real "One Night In Bangkok "Please Stand Up.......2006-12-23
Finally, one can have the original version of "One Night In Bangkok" on Volume 14 of this series. Murray Head wasn't smart enough to include it on his own greatest hits CD, so it's good that someone got it right. In addition, some other worthy offerings on this CD include "Close (to the edit) by Art Of Noise, Der Komimissar (After The Fire), "Imagination" by Belouis Some, and "Sunglasses At Night" by Corey Heart.
"True Men Don't Kill Coyotes" is an interesting inclusion as we get to hear the Red Hot Chili Peppers in their underground days. This is worth having if you're an 80's fan. Go get yourself a copy.
Exactly what I thought it would be!.......2006-03-20
A great mix of hard to find music.
Old School Skater.......2005-09-20
Damn, I havent even bought this CD but boy, talk about remeniscing, I think I spelled that right, hmm, I remmeber the skate board days, New Wave girlfreind, man.... great CD, there's nothing like 80's New Wave, or just 80's Rock, the music now? Shoot, its all over produced and bland, I 'd rather listen to daeth metal than the music now, well, I actually do.
Yet another great one in the series.......2005-06-14
I've been picking up these in the "Compilations" section over the years, and have never stopped enjoying them.
I'm not sure why they are referred to "Dance Hits", because I was a New Waver back in the day and I don't recall too many being played at the clubs (can you imagine trying to groove to "Sunglasses at Night"?!), though many were ("Der Kommisar", "Tenderness" are STILL being played at numerous "Old Wave" clubs to this day).
The true gem in this one that you'll very likely not find anywhere else is "Anywhere With You" by Rubber Rodeo. Solid bass riff, melancholy guitars; a very good song that unfortunately got zero airplay. They were too busy playing Michael Jackson, I guess...!

Images from Heaven makes this a five star.......2007-06-20
The heart felt songs of the 80's are well captured in the Just Can't Get Enough series, they did a very good job of finding some of the more obscure songs of the 80's but unfortunately they spread them out to force you to buy the set. Yet still as far as the collection is concerned this is one of the best because of Peter Godwin's Images of Heaven. Play the song for yourself and you'll see why.
not bad.......2005-03-06
If you grew up in the Eighties most of these songs will be familiar to you. Some of these are quite good ( Only You, Oblivious, Come Back and Stay ) and hold up nicely after repeated listening. Some do not, unfortunately. And for the record, the version of Our Lips Are Sealed here ( by the Fun Boy Three ) is NOT the original, as stated by the reviewer above. It was recorded after the Go-Gos did it ( although the lead singer of FBT - Terry Hall - co-wrote the song with Jane Weidlin of the Go-Go's). Overall, a fun nostalgia trip.

Just Can't Get Enough..........2007-02-04
Folks, I only bought this CD for "Send Me An Angel" by Real Life. That's one of my favorite songs from the 80's. The rest of the CD outside of "99 Luft Balloons" by Nena is passable. Five stars for the Group 'Real Life'!! Three stars for the disc overall.
Angel Delivered!.......2006-02-25
I bought this CD because it has the original 1983 version of Real Life's "Send Me An Angel" which I couldn't find anywhere else.
As for the rest of it, this CD is a decent 80's collection. However, I'd suggest starting off any 80's library with the 5 volumes of "Living In Oblivion" and then building up from there.
Worth the money for "Just Got Lucky" and "Emotion".......2003-12-03
Volume 11 of the New Wave Dance Hits series is an excellent collection of great 80's rock mixing some of the biggest new wave hits with other lesser known but still strong tracks. The tracks "99 Luftballons", "True", "Talking In Your Sleep", and "One Thing Leads To Another" were all Top 5 singles in the early 80's. Of these tracks, only "One Thing..." has stood the test of time as it still gets regular airplay on modern rock radio.
As with many of the albums in this series, it's the lesser known tracks that truly stand out. Some of these include the driving "In A Big Country", the moody "Send Me An Angel", the excellent pop of "Black Coffee In Bed", and the hyperactive track "The Fanatic." But the best tracks here, and the reason to pick up this album, are the tracks "Just Got Lucky", quite simply an excellent pop song that should have made JoBoxers huge, and "Emotion", a track by DFX2 which sounds reminiscent of Greg Kihn Band but is more danceable with its killer bass line. Other solid tracks include "Change", "Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime)", and "Shiny Shiny." The rest of the album is pretty decent too. A great compliation. Highly recommended.
VERY Shiny.......2002-09-23
It automatically gets 5 stars just for including Haysi Fantayzee! It never leaves my carousel, except maybe for a trip on the subway in my discman.
Another Cool Collection from Rhino !.......2001-08-23
Another strong collection in Rhino's New Wave Hits series. Great stuff like Jo Boxers' "Just Got Lucky" and the super cool "Fanactic" by Felony. Add some classic cuts from Squeeze, The Fixx and Big Country and it all adds up to a very worthy collection. Overall, great fun stuff from a time when music was catchy, clever and optimistic. If you grew up in the 80's, chances are you'll dig this CD as well as the others in this great series.

It seems like only yesterday that MTV signed on with the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star." But it's been long enough to inspire a comprehensive collection on Rhino Records recalling the tunes that got us through the Reagan years. The first five volumes of Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s compile songs ranging from influential ("Pop Muzak" by M and "Money" by the Flying Lizards), to dumb fun ("I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow and "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors), to shoulda-stayed-forgotten ("I Ran (So Far Away)" by Flock of Seagulls and "Love Plus One" by Haircut 100). The weird thing is how current it all sounds. In no time at all, we'll be listening to We're All Losers, Baby: Alternative Rock Wonders of the '90s, featuring similar throwaways by Radiohead, Blind Melon, Beck, and Crash Test Dummies. --Jim DeRogatis
Customer Reviews:
New Wave Dance Hits: Just Can't Get Enough, Vol. 1..........2007-06-02
Cruel to be Kind - Nick Lowe - that was my song at the time. New Wave was alive and well in 1981. Four stars overall!
Some good stuff from the edge of the 80's.......2004-06-07
It could be argued that much of what's included in this set actually belonged on a 70's collection, but that's beside the point. You get pretty good bang for the buck with this disc unless you have already invested in another collection that includes some of the more common songs on here. (By common I mean songs like The Knack's "My Sharona". Good, but is it new wave?) By contrast, songs like Blondie's "One Way Or Another", Nick Lowe's excellent "Cruel To Be Kind", Graham Parker's likewise brilliant "Local Girls", Dave Edmunds' "Girls Talk" or The Flying Lizards' version of "Money", are nothing short of brilliant inclusions. Plastic Bertrand's "Ca Plane Pour Moi" never struck me as great, but when I played this disc in the car with my daughter and her friends one day, they shocked me by singing along with the song word for word. Turns out it made a Mary Kate & Ashley movie soundtrack. (And I haven't seen Vol. 1 since.) Great stuff, but "Video Killed The Radio Star"? Was that necessary?
Excellent faire for the 80's enthusiast's.......2003-09-30
A few of these songs on this disc are pretty common amongst 80's fans (Blondie's One Way or Another, Nick Lowe's Cruel to Be Kind, The Knack's My Sharona and The Buggles VKtRS) but there are a few seriously excellent unknown gems on this disc that a majority of the people will enjoy I think. Starting with Ca Plane Pour Moi from Plastic Bertrand, then skipping to Graham Parker's Local Girls. The highlight of the disc is Tim Curry's (Rocky Horror Picture Show) insane song, I Do the Rock which seems to get better with every listen. Out of the entire collection, I give this one a rating of 7.5 out of 10
A decent sampling of early New Wave hits (dancing optional).......2002-12-23
New Wave was the term used to describe the music that came after punk rock in the late 1970s and early 1980s, although certainly it included post-punk music as well. However, I never really thought of it sas "dance" music, which means nothing because I never went dancing to disco, techno, or anything in between. So this might be Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" but I just think of it as a solid New Wave collection. New Wave might have been the pop music of its time, but it retained the vigor and irreverence of punk music as well as being musically more sophisticated with its interest in electronics and such. This collection has the virtue of including the songs that defined the change in music, namely the Knack's "My Sharona," the Ramones "Rock & Roll High School," and the song that heralded the creation of MTV, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. These sixteen tracks are devoted more to the one-hit wonders like Tim Curry's "I Do the Rock" and "Gidget Goes to Hell" by Suburban Lawns rather than the big name groups like Blondie (Nick Lowe and Graham Parker are not quite in Deborah Harry's league). But once you get beyond "One Way or Another" you are dealing with Plastic Bertrand and the Flying Lizards rather than Duran Duran, Culture Club, and the Pretends, which is fine, because the point of a hit collection like this one is to add songs you do not have to your music library. In that regard, Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" should easily provide you with a half-dozen songs worth having.
Riding The Wave.......2001-07-17
The first volume of Rhino's New Wave Dance Hits collection is a superb collection of songs that range from big hits to obscure gems. "My Sharona" by The Knack was the number one single of the year from 1979 and despite the fact that never became the new Beatles, the song is a classic with it's hypnotic, thumping bass line and adolescent lyrics. Blondie's obsessive "One Way Or Another" has a punk sneer with a pop gloss. The Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star" is best known as the first video ever played on MTV, but it is a fun song that has held up well over the years. Veteran rocker Dave Edmunds does a roaring version of Elvis Costello's "Girls Talk" while Graham Parker has fun on the sprightly "Local Girls". Rock Horror star Tim Curry does a credible job on "I Do The Rock" and The Flying Lizards put a new spin on the old chestnut "Money (That's What I Want)". The set would be worth buying alone for Nick Lowe's power pop masterpiece "Cruel To Be Kind". The song was Mr. Lowe's lone hit in the US and is a perfectly crafted piece of music that stands up against anything to come out this era.

WORTH TWICE THE ASKING PRICE.......2000-10-03
Worth twice the asking price just for Nik Kershaw's Wouldn't It Be Good!! Rest of the tracks are "vintage" 80s' also. The whole Just Can't Get Enough series is a must for 80s' music fans. Absolutely no clunkers!!!
Gotta have if you're an 80's fan!.......1999-09-14
Got a good mix of old favorites (Relax, Cruel Summer) and some not-so-easy-to-find gems like Whisper To A Scream. I love this cd!
best singular '80s compilation out there.......1999-09-02
While this compilation manages to have unappealing tracks ("Girls", "Free Nelson Mandela"), there are some really nice songs on here. "Hold Me Now" and "Cruel Summer" are really great songs to commute to, and "The Stand" is a powerful and anthemic delight. "Wouldn't It Be Good" is delectable and "Whisper to a Scream" is a rare gem. This is a must buy for anyone wanting an '80s compilation that doesn't contain the usual hackneyed "hitsapalooza". I even liked "Hero Takes a Fall" and I never knew I could like a Bangles song!
Easily the best!.......1999-07-04
Songs like Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't it Be Good" and The Special AKA's "Nelson Mandela" make this easily the best volume in this 15 volume series. Nik Kershaw fans beware: An edited version of "Wouldn't it Be Good" appears here.

WOW! Was "Mickey" a GREAT song, or what?!.......2004-10-26
Nope, in fact it was one of the songs that I hated the first time I heard it and can still gather up a load of revulsion for today. The oddball tune that drags this collection up to the .500 line is Pete Shelley's "Homo Sapien". Funny, catchy and just plain clever, but I worry about Pete. Other than that volume 5 barely trips the meter. Welcome to the middle of the new wave road.
Nearly Quintessential...Nearly.......2002-05-24
My biggest complaint about this particular album is the inclusion of "Hold onto Something" by Great Buildings. Many of these songs define my days in high school, but for the life of me I can't remember ever hearing of this band. However, I do remember hearing this song...or one very much like it -- Joe Jackson's incredibly popular song titled, "I'm the Man," from his album, "I'm the Man" (1979), which was hugely popular through the early eighties.
Re-mixing this album with the correct song would help this album's rating a lot.
Those Were The Days-- Great New Wave Collection!.......2001-08-18
The best entry in Rhino's awesome "New Wave Hits" series.(Volume 1 which covers the late 70's is also excellent). All 16 songs are culled from 1982 which was indeed a very good year for pop music. Haircut One Hundred's "Love Plus One" and Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran" were anthems of the(then) young MTV Generation. These quirky video darlings raged like a hurricane of fresh air in the face of bland corporate schlock which hogged the airwaves. Songs like the Go Go's "Vacation" and Tommy Tutone's "867-5309" were not only pure fun-- they were also well-crafted 3-minute pop gems. In fact, nearly every tune on volume 5 is cut from the same intelligent pop mold. Other standouts from this set include the vastly underrated Marshall Crenshaw's "Someday Someway", The Jam's "A Town Called Malice" and Soft Cell's absurdly humorous "Sex Dwarf". The only weak cuts are Gang of Four's "Man in Uniform" and the truly horrible "Art of Parties" by Japan. Overall, this is a fantastic collection which harkens back to a truly innovative time in pop music-- a brief time when catchy Hit Singles ruled and all possibilities seemed endless.
Best In The Series.......2001-07-07
This is my favorite of the series. Actually there are only two cuts that I consider weak ("Kids in America" and "Mickey"). ALl the rest are great little slices of the variety and creativeness of 80's new wave rock. Good c.d. to have.
Just Can't Get Enough vol. 5.......2000-07-10
I have 8 of the cd's in this series, and plan on getting the rest. This one is one of my favorite of the series. The song "Love Plus One" by Haircut One Hundred is a fabulous song. There are many other gems as well, such as "I Want Candy", "Someday, Someway" and "I Ran (So Far Away)". There are many obscure songs on here, so don't expect to know them all, unless you had an unbelievable vinyl collection in the 80's. The music hear can fit almost any mood you may be feeling. Pick it up and enjoy.

Choose It for the Songs You Recognize.......2004-12-22
I own several CDs in this series and this one, unfortunately is the one that comes off the shelf the least. Even since loading the contents up MP3 style into my computer and iPod only a few get played. Only a select few truly sound like the alternative radio I grew up with in the 80s.

I love listening to the music, but can you please tell me how to find New Wave Dance Hits: Just Can't Get Enough, Vol. 8. I've been looking everywhere for it. Thanks, Cristy

Customer Reviews:
Hands down the series champ.......2004-06-22
With Volume 4 of the Just Can't Get Enough series Rhino really got their act together. Leading off with Devo's greatest non-hit ever "Freedom Of Choice", this disc rarely lets up and only occasionally stumbles. The Boomtown Rats "Up All Night", doomed Phil Seymour's "Precious To Me", and the Translators "Everywhere That I'm Not" all make for legitimate reasons to buy this disc, but the two killers are The Members early MTV staple "Working Girl" and The Monroes "What Do All The People Know". Try finding THOSE somewhere else. One other great song that could have been a huge plus to this collection was The Kings "Switchin' To Glide/This Beat Goes On" but THEY CUT HALF OF IT OFF!!! Whose idea was that? No matter. Search under The Kings on Amazon for the debut album and hear it like it was meant to be heard.
The stumble? The God-awful "Tainted Love" which has been known to cause loose stools in laboratory mice. Avoid at all costs.
Volume Four Makes Case For Best In Series!.......2004-03-13
I'm busy collecting this terrific series by Rhino. Volume Four is the fifth CD in the series I've added to my collection and is so far the best. Everything you associate with the new Wave era of the 1980s is here. Generals and Majors by XTC captures the Cold War doom and gloom of the Reagan years (those years seem rather innocent now). Love and Lonliness by the Motors gives you synth pop at its best. Solid New Wave sound can be found in the Kings Switchin' to Glide and the Undertones It's Going to Happen. I really like Workin Girl by the Members and What Do All the People Know by the Monroes. Also represented are Devo with Freedom of Choice and Soft Cell's Tainted Love (Both of TV commercial fame). The twelve cuts here really show the range of New Wave music. Some of it is lighthearted and meant for fun while others take things quite seriously. I look forward to completing the set, but doubt any of the others will match this one!

New Wave Hits Volume 4.......2000-12-31
This CD is a pretty good compilation of hits from the era of new wave. I must agree with prior reviewers that this does seem to be the only way to get The Monroes "What Do All the People Know". It is a shame that this compilation only includes the second part of The Kings song "Switchin' to Glide", failing to include the first part of this song the "Beat Goes On" is a large disappointment. This oversight is what led me to only rank this CD as four stars. On the positive side, even though most of these songs are available elsewhere, this CD is a quick way to acquire a number of great tunes without doing a long search. Such tunes as "Working Girl", "Tainted Love", and "Generals and Majors" make this CD a must have for the fan of new wave.
Only one reason to buy this--The Monroes!.......2000-07-30
Fairly typical mix of 80's new wave stuff and one-hit wonders, but this album's one saving grace is the inclusion of the lost classic "What Do All The People Know" by the Monroes. This song is one of the all-time greats, even if it is ever so slightly edited here. Another compilation contained the song, but this CD seems to be the only one still available. So snap it up, Monroes fans!

Just Can't Get Enough - vol. 6.......2000-07-10
As a person who spent their formative years through the eighties, I collect music from that era. To those who didn't live it, it would be less geeky to collect stamps or wheat pennies. But I tell you, the confections found on this series is purely delightful. It is the songs many of us grew up with. We cranked up the radio in our big, gas guzzling cars and cruised the strip to this music. Sure, the "preps" were listening to Michael Jackson and Madonna, while the "burn-outs" were listening to AC/DC and still going off in shop class about Van Halen using keyboards in their music. But those of us somewhere in between listened to THIS. We knew The Cure and REM were musical geniuses. Of course, we also thought the same about Kajagoogoo and Bow Wow Wow, but hey...we still love to hear them and remember some of our finer days.
The collection has some songs that were radio favorites, such as Men At Work's "Who Can It Be Now" and Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" There are lesser known songs that only those of us who were really proud of knowing obscure bands and songs will be aquainted with. If you are looking for only the popular 80's stuff, songs like "I Predict", by the Spark's, and "Wot" by Captain Sensible may leave you cold. But if you like the unusual, the sound quality is so much better than the tapes you made off the radio in high school!
So, this cd, as well as all of them in the series have some true gems on them that sound as fabulous now as they did then. The others are good for strolls down memory lane, and those days when you are looking at old photographs of your self in turquoise parachute pants and a Members Only jacket. Admit it...you miss those old sythesizer, big haired days!

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
