GREAT MUSIC!.......2007-04-11
I BOUGHT THIS CD AFTER CHECKING OUT OZOMATLI WEBSITE AND THIS WAS ONE OF OZOMATLI'S FAVORITE BANDS. DAYUMM--THIS CD IS GREAT! REMINDS ME OF THE ROOTS WITH THEIR MUSICIANSHIP. THIER LAID BACK VIBE IS SO EASY TO GET INTO--I EVEN LISTEN TO THE CD WHILE I'M WORKING. HOLLAR! GET THIS CD AND CHILL! YOU WILL TRULY ENJOY, LIKE I DO EVERYTIME I LISTEN TO THIS CD! 5 STARS NOT GOOD ENOUGH RATING TO THIS GREAT CD! ************************
Very good album.......2007-03-14
this album deserves 5 stars because it is just a quaily cd. It is very refreshing to hear people that truly love culture of hip hop, including djing mcing, boying and grafiti. It is very chill and soulful because of the fact that this group basically a band with an MC, like the Roots. Also the guest appearances are limited and very good.
The best album.......2006-04-04
Seriously. You have to get this album. The beats are sick, a mix of live instruments and samples. Has a chill vibe created by vintage keyboards and funky bass lines. The MCs flow perfectly with the music. No songs sound like an angry dog barking at you. The lyrics are positive and deep. When I listen to this I spark a doober, bob my head and just chill. In my top three of all time and I am so picky with my hip hop. Support this talented group.
Incredible Live HIPHOP group captured on CD.......2005-11-06
I saw these guys as the opening act for Digable Planets in Lawrence, KS in November, 2005. They weren't even on the Ticketmaster billing, and I had no idea what to expect. Neither did the rest of the crowd.
But, damn, if they didn't have the entire crowd up and dancing their asses off within 30 seconds of the first song. They simply killed. The flow of the rhymes, the live music (freakin' awesome drummer and keyboard player), the connection with the crowd... PERFECT.
I've seen a lot of live acts in my day. Any typically, 90% of groups sound better on the record than they do in person. Crown City Rockers were one of those unique groups who sounded _better_ in person that they do on their records. Soulful, jazzy, rap-sodic, and funky. It just doesn't get any better than this. I hate to say it, but they even blew away Digable Planets. A group I'd spent more than a decade wishing I'd get to see live.
Most positive album of the year!.......2004-12-30
Unlike what the last reviewer says, you do not need a bong full of weed to enjoy this music. In fact, I don't recommend ever needing to smoke it in the first place, and I don't think Rashaan Ahmad would approve of it either. This album is very, very nice and TRULY a breath of fresh ass air. This is not just a Hiphop group, this is a band. These members are not even of the same race and gender. Interesting...this albums displays how Hiphop has diversified and is still growing stronger.
The CCR's are comprised of lead MC Rashaan Ahmad(who is African-American in case you cared), an Asian female on the keys, and three white guys on their respective instruments. Intriguing indeed! I just figured out that this is their second album, the first was released under the name "Mission." I say that this is the most positive album of the year because it's all about enjoying yourself, enjoying life, and finding yourself. Even the two battle-rap songs("Simple" and "No Sense") come off as positive and done with good intentions. Rashaan Ahmad may not have the most captivating flow and voice in the industry, but his lyrics are good-natured and he basically never cusses. This dude sure displays much talent throughout the album.
The separate collaborations with two of the top MC's from California, Gift of Gab and Zion, on the tracks "Fortitude" and "Without Love," respectively, are shining moments on the album. Rashaan does a commendable job keeping up with the untouchable Gift of Gab, but his track with Zion(from Zion I) comes out to be the real classic. "Without Love" is socially conscious and very soulful, truly memorable. "Sidestep" might be Rashaan's best track here by himself. You may not like the chorus(sung by Destani Wolf) at first, but upon further listen it adds an impeccable amount of soul to Rashaan's satisfying two verses. "10:53" is a slower, jazzy track where Rashaan is at his introspective and conscious best, one of the best off this album. The following one, "No Sense," may seem out of place with the rest of album with its battle rhymes, but a couple extra listens and it is still a solid song.
"Another Day" is the first song, a very satisfying one to start it all off. "Balance" was the other collab, besides the two I mentioned, with some cat named Scarub and this is an excellent track. They trade verses, and honestly Rashaan holds his own but is outdone by Scarub. "B-Boy" is an always-welcome ode to the breakers and beginnings of Hiphop, and has a surreal and memorable beat. "Fate" was the only 'love' song off "Earth Tones," and it's okay, but not a standout. "Culture" I thought could have been the ultimate song here, if it were longer. It's just one extended verse where Rashaan depicts the actual Hiphop Kulture and how it's growing and influencing. The title track was cool, but just one verse from Rashaan and then music to round it out. "Something pt. 3" has a unique, almost too loud beat, but still comes out pretty decent.
The band behind Rashaan Ahmad is excellent throughout, but they get some chances to showcase their skills on a couple interludes, the bonus track, and at the end of tracks like "Sidestep," "Fate," and the title cut. They throw in quite a bit of jazz, and you need to get this album now if you loved the jazz-rap movement back in the early-90's! Check out the five +1/2 minute jam session with sax player David Boyce(doing his best Coltrane impersonation) on "D Minor Nine," an excellent addition to this album. The band keeps it mostly mellow throughout the cd, but shows they can kick up the intensity on jams like "Heat"(where Rashaan actually tells a couple stories) and "Fortitude." Rashaan never ruins their music by talking materialistic nonsense, cursing, bragging, or getting too esoteric. A talented band with a capable, well-studied MC...yes it is quite a combo! They demonstrate progression within Hiphop, which we all had already given up on. One of the top 5 Hiphop albums of 2004 in my book. Hiphop's future and the Crown City Rockers' future is very bright, and this album proves it!

This is the best one so far.............2001-06-05
I fully agree with the other reviewers, the song "Carrot Cake".. well once you heard then it s there. Bernstein plays so cool and so beautiful, one good example of this is the standard "who can I turn to", and by the way, what an intro he does on that song.Bernstein and Goldings go so well together they are both cool players with a fantastic groove so that is as I suppose the reason why they blend so well. Players like Jimmy Smith and Joey de Fransesco are "hot" players and really know how to strike a groove, but question is if it do not "hit you harder" when it is done the way Goldings does it. I have Hank Mobleys song "The Breakthrough " in mind, first Goldings gives it a try and suddenly he "takes off" and his bass lines kills me. So if you like Bernstein and Goldings and do not have this one, buy it it is a must have.
The finest example of modern jazz........2000-10-15
Peter Bernstein's playing on Earth Tones is beautiful with his strong sense of melody and depth of phrasing, which is present if he is the leader or a sideman. What sets Earth Tones apart is composition. Peter has chosen three standards which in his hands sound like originals and five originals which sound like standards, my favorite being "Carrot Cake" a classic funk driven vamp which embodies everything modern jazz should be.
One Very Fine Recording.......2000-06-13
The inventive, tight performances of this power trio displays a level of communication and understanding that makes it one of the very best trio discs of recent issue. Peter Bernstein is an extremely talented composer and guitarist. With Larry Goldings, one of today's finer keyboard players on Hammond B3 (and a brilliant composer in his own right) and Bill Stewart on drums (well-deserving of just having been voted jazz drummer of the year for the past three years by "Modern Drummer Magazine") giving sensitive, exciting and imaginative performances, "Earth Tones" displays a varied array of musical styles all with very accessible and even catchy hooks. "Acrobat" written by Goldings and "Carrot Cake" written by Bernstein are just two tunes that instantly come to mind as charts that should become future standards. Without question, this disc should have appeared on a major with substantial backing and label support.

Check it out!.......2006-03-23
This album is a good find for Hunter fans. It is his first recording with other guitarists since T.J. Kirk and, although I would recommend those albums (2 studio, 1 live) over this one, this is classic Hunter. The Earth Tones band includes hunter on the 8-string, the other two on guitar (China on acoustic), and drums and bass. The feel is mostly Caribbean, but jazz/funk/jam fans will be happy with Hunter's new sound.
Warning: The first release of this album contains a small defect. It sounds like a small scratch on track two. Don't bother returning the cd b/c the same thing will come back in the mail. The skip is almost unnoticeable, but be warned.
This album is a must for fans. For those just discovering Hunter's music, I recommend "Friends Seen and Unseen" and "Right Now Move." All of his albums are good, but these have been my favorite so far. "Copperopolis" is worth checking out as well if you want to hear CH rock out.

Upbeat and Lively..........2000-11-19
I like playing this CD after a hard day at the office, because it always puts me in a better mood. All the tracks are winners, and I especially enjoy "Calgary Girl" and "Ferris Wheel".
Simple, pure... Beautiful Compositions.......1999-08-06
These tunes are "hand-crafted" by some of the best musicians alive today and is an album to be listened to from beginning to end, over and over.
Great new music on the hammered dulcimer.......1999-03-16
Hammered dulcimer isn't what I think of when I think new music, but this collection of original compositions really works. Elman has toned down the energy on his hammered dulcimer and it gives a continually interesting sound throughout these tracks. Lots of african and oriental influences in these pieces. I like the whole cd but tracks 4,8,11, and 12 are my faves. Highly recommended.

Music for Long Winter Nights and any time of day or season!.......2004-11-21
Leif Ove Andsnes is a fine musician who feels an affinity to his Scandinavian roots as he so ably demonstrates in this exquisite recording of Norwegian piano music. Yes, we all know the Grieg pieces and Andsnes plays them with shimmering intensity and flair. But it is the piano works of David Monrad Johansen, Geirr Tveitt, Fartein Valen, and Harald Saeverud that come as special surprises. Each of these composers lived well into the 20th Century and yet their music, while embracing forms of modern idiom, simply 'feels' Nordic. Here are some of the more ethereal melodies and folksong-inspired rhythms in the literature for the solo piano and Andsnes plays them to perfection.Another fine aspect of this generous recording is the engineering choices of allowing enough silence between pieces to allow the air to breathe around the one last performed and inhale, ready for the next. This is a very special album of new music that should encourage other pianists (and audiences) to pay closer attention to Norwegian composers. Recommended. Grady Harp, November 2004
Gorgeous.......2003-12-04
I read an article about Leif Ove Andsnes in "The Economist", of all places, which called him one of the "most interesting" pianists today. Now I know why. His performance of the nine pieces by Grieg on this CD is totally liquid, effortless, MORE perfect than snowfall. I've heard some fantastic Grieg performances, but this is the best by far.
The most interesting tracks on the disc, though, are actually Geirr Tveitt's "Fifty Folktunes from Hardanger". Tveitt based these songs on folk melodies he collected up in northern Norway (his native region) around the time of the German occupation, and they're full of some of the melancholy he must have felt during the war. They're also, as you would expect, full of snow-cloaked mountains, love, stars, dreams, the electric northern sky and, yes, "long, long winter nights". While Tveitt's distinctive idiom is avant-garde enough to be unique (unlike in a lot of settings of folktunes by other composers), it's a lot more accessible than some of Johansen, Valen, and Saeverud's pieces on this disc. I just heard an orchestrated version of the "Hardanger Tunes" on one of Naxos' CDs -- pretty impressive, but even more overpowering in the hands of Andsnes.
Engaging listening.......2002-02-19
A collection of works by Norwegian composers, including several worthy lesser-known works, performed with superlative musicianship by Leif Ove Andsnes. Rhythmic passages churn, fast passages sparkle, lyrical passages sing, to great emotional effect. Andsnes makes his technical proficiency a servant to the compositions. Every composer should be so lucky to have an artist such as this play his works.
for a long long winternight.......2000-11-27
This album shows that Scandinavien music is not only Grieg. Compositions in different styles are performed in a wonderful way by Leif Ove Andsnes. The atmosphere is the same in all pieces: as in a long, long winter night.
LEIF OVE ANDSNES : A PARAGON OF CULTURAL VIRTUE.......2000-01-28
To explore the culture of your homeland with the sophistication and dedication that Andsnes expresses on the album deserves a Nobel Prize. This dynamic young Norwegian pianist escews cultural imperialism and exploitation and gives pride to those who recognise the depth and value of the music that has evolved over time in this seemingly far far land. This collection of Norwegian music, echoing so often the dynamics of the landscape and psychological interrogation of the nature of time ~ long long winter nights, and by implication long long summer days. Andsnes bears witness to the craft and creativity of his forebearers with style beautifully expressing their ideas and ambitions. A wonderfully powerful cd. Enjoy!

"Born to Wander" wander off?.......2005-08-25
Great collection of a much overlooked group. It leaves out one of Rare Earth's great songs however. If "Born to Wander" had been included, it would have been a solid no questions asked 5-star recording.
Always Save The Good Things.......2003-03-13
The 1970's was a time of Lyndon Baines Johnson and Richard Milhaus Nixon. The 1970's was a time of Archie Bunker and "All In The Family". The 1970's marked significant advances in civil rights and women's rights. The 1970's marked the realization of John Fitzgerald Kennedy's dream -- astronauts from the United States walked on the moon. The 1970's marked a strong, confident, industrialized United States. The 1970's marked the emergence of hard rock music. And the 1970's marked *widespread* citizen protests over the unpopular Vietnam War.
The 1970's was a time of prosperity and confusion. What is the legacy of the 1970's? The question might be rhetorical, but "Earth Tones: The Essential Rare Earth" by Rare Earth should be included in that legacy. "Earth Tones: ..." is a collection of Rare Earth's best recordings, and in my opinion is among the strongest recordings that Motown ever produced. All of the selections are good, but 'Warm Ride' (the extended 12" promotional single version), 'Hey Big Brother', and 'Get Ready' (a 21:33 minute live recording -- PLAY IT LOUD) deserve particular mention.
Popular music in the Twenty-First Century can be mechanical, chaotic and unclear. "Earth Tones: ..." is a collection of Motown's best with strong melody and rhythm, and with clear confident lyrics. "Earth Tones: ..." typifies the 1970's United States that I would like to remember.
Rare Earth - Rare collection... Good Find!!!.......2002-11-15
This group was rather an unusual addition to the Motown back in 1969. They were given their own label and label design which at the time was quite hip.
The group featured probably the quintessential versions of "I'm Losing You" and "Get Ready". As empassioned as the original but more expansive than the originals. Get Ready is a long, rocking vehicle for improvisation and soloing while remaining somewhat true to the original spirit of the piece.
I'm Losing You becoming a plaintive but spacey version of the song with classic rock guitar lines and percussion breaks.
Each version redefined and re-shaped to a harder edge equal importance given to the instrumental as well as the vocal.
Pete Hoorelbeke ("Pete Rivera") is a powerful vocalist and an underrated, very inventive drummer. If you listen to "Get Ready" you can hear how he mixes it up and provides very inventive and propulsive drive to the piece. He really makes the most of his ability.
The instrumental solos are very good. This was a band that is so seldom given and deserving more props. The forgotten band of the Motown stable. Probably due to it not being typical of it's sound. The closest to it is the very well done, R&B based "Satisfaction Guaranteed".
Actually it doesn't matter if they weren't pure Motown. This was an exceptional addition to their stable of artists. When Rare Earth first appeared Motown was expanding it's sound and embracing much more varied elements.
Rare Earth combined different elements into something rock-based on the edge of R&B along with some jazz, funk and some understated latin influences.
The band represented here is the best of the various incarnations. Why only four stars? There were a few cuts that were left out that should've been included and one ("Warm Ride") which should've been left out. "Get Ready", "I'm Losing You" and the very soulful and driving "Satisfaction Guaranteed" are true high points.
I recommend this one highly.

I live in Australia. There is a CD store in Brisbane who specialise in rare and deleted music and they sell a Rare Earth CD with a version of Get Ready that lasts for a bit over 21 minutes. You can buy the CD from their site ...- it costs about $..., but if you are in America or any country that isn't third world, it'll cost you pretty much nothing. They'll have to pay you for buying it probably - we have a fantastic economy here.
Long version of GET READY.......2000-03-14
Rare Earth used to and still is one of my favorite bands. The long version of GET READY is a very hard song to get these days. Unfortunatly the record company has dicontinued this version. But I am here to help. Go to Napster.com, download the program and then go into search, type in Rare Earth and click on the 23 min version of GET READY and it's ready to download. Might take a while, but I think it's worth it.
