Gil Evans clever arrangements and Cannonball Adderly's brillant solos on the first 8 tracks is Jazz at its' best.

This CD is a fine selection by Blue Note which is supposed to be limited. It is the combination of 2 LPs "New Bottle Old Wine" & "Great Jazz Standards" with different musicians on the albums, but all great artists conducted by the master. But you must love classical jazz even with Evans stunning arrangements ... Don't expect the wildness of "Svengali"!
Another interesting CD is the Gil Evans Orchestra "Tribute To Gil" recorded in 1988 in Perugia Umbria Jazz Festival following 2 CDs recorded live by Gil in 1987 as well as "Last Session" Sting & Gil Evans Live at Perugia Jazz Festival - July 11,1987 but if they are still available ...

Great release by Blue Note, putting together these two albums on one. The first album "New Bottle, Old Wine", might be one of the greatest jazz albums of the 1950's, period. Plus this is of interest to all Cannonball Adderley fans. His playing on that album is just insane, on the same league as the great Charlie Parker, but of course, Cannonball sound is unique. You cant go wrong with Gil Evans, but this is top of the line.

Frazier has it exactly right (except for misspelling Art Blakey's name). Just to add a few things: this set marks the beginning of the Steve Lacy - Gil Evans musical kinship (there's a remarkable dialogue between soprano sax and piano on "Django"; it has the first recording of Gil's incredible arrangement of "King Porter Stomp" that got electrified on later recordings; it showcases Elvin Jones with Gil for the first time (but certainly not the last); it has some of the most inpsired Cannonball on record; and it shows that Johnny Coles was no mere imitator of Miles. Also, for the purists: it corrects the deficiency of an earlier release of only half of the Pacific Jazz material and remedies the out-of-round pressings that marred the LP twofer release of this stuff. One tiny quibble: these studio recordings are unusually dry in ambience, but on the other hand, you'll hear the music exactly as it sounded when it was played. Finally, the CDs allow us to hear the whole huge dynamic range of Gil's orchestral thinking, from whispers to shouts. Thanks, Blue Note and Michael Cuscuna, for finally getting this one right.

What an amazing record -- I first discovered this music on vinyl years ago after hearing the several classic collaborations between the arranger Gil Evans and trumper Miles Davis. If you have admired the Gil Evans arrangements on the Miles recordings, you owe it to yourself to check this out. These recordings help make the case that Gil Evans was one of great jazz arrangers of all time. Big band arrangements can sometimes degenerate into all-out blastfests; Gil Evans always manages to communicate with a lot more sophistication and nuance, but on these sessions he manages to have fun as well.

Originally issued as two albums -- "New Bottle, Old Wine" and "Great Jazz Standards" -- this is a CD of Gil Evans re-arranging classic jazz standards like St. Louis Blues, King Porter Stomp, Lester Leaps In with some post-bop standards like 'Round Midnight, Joy Spring and Straight No Chaser.

The album was recorded in 1958 and 1959 with Julian "Cannonball" Adderley doing much of the alto saxophone work. The big band included classic NY session pros like Johnny Coles and Ernie Royal on trumpet, and Curtis Fuller, Jimmy Cleveland and Curtis Fuller on trombone. Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakely and Elvin Jones make appearances in the rhythm section, and Steve Lacy plays soprano sax on 4 tracks.

It's so interesting to be listening to these records nearly 50 years after they were made -- this was a "modern" take on jazz tunes that even then were considered classics. Hearing them now, it's like listening to one set of Old Masters interpreting an even more distant set of Old Old Masters. It's a CD that you can enjoy as a peek into modern jazz of the late 50's, or as a set of very interesting big band orchestrations.

High recommended if you want to learn more about this extremely talented jazz orchestrator.

    This CD has been recorded at a very low level. If you want to hear that opening clarinet glissando in Rhapsody in Blue, be prepared to turn the volume WAAAAAY up. Great collection, but disappointing quality. Wish I'd bought something else.

    Erich Kunzel conducts a wonderful recording of all the orchestral Gershwin one needs. There is a great performance of Rhapsody in Blue, and An American in Paris. They are conducted and played the way Gershwin would have liked. The three preludes are played fantastically, especially Walking the Dog played brilliantly by the clarinetist. I highly recommend this to any Gershwin fan who wants a complete and wonderful recording of this fine American music.

    Digitally Remastered Edition of an Unbelievable Assortment of Jazz Musicians -- Some the Greatest of the Day, Including: Mel Tormé, Frances Faye, Johnny Hartman, Duke Ellington and his Famous Orchestra, Betty Roché, and Many More. The Superb Arrangements of the Gershwin's Music is Accentuated by Great Interpretations of the all Star Performers. This Modernized and Memorable Jazz Version of the Legendary American Folk Opera was Recorded in New York and Los Angeles in 1956. Also Includes as Bonus Tracks the Original Version of a Not Very Well Known Work by the Great Musician Mel Torme, the "california Suite," a Type of Ambitious Mixture for Orchestra and Voice Evoking the Sounds of Broadway, Vaudeville, and Opera. This Composition, Described by his Author as a "lyrical and Musical Narrative Dedicated to the Golden State" by Torme, is Performed by Torme Himself with Peggy Lee, the Mel-tones and Orchestra Conducted by Hal Mooney.

    There are so many recorded versions of "Porgy and Bess" that it's hard to think of Gershwin's score as anything but a handful of classic tunes -- Miles Davis put his stamp on "Summertime," and Billie Holiday's "I Loves You Porgy" comes instantly to mind among an endless variety of interpretations. Here is DuBose Heyward's libretto and the full Gershwin score, performed by an array of singers and musicians from some kind of hothouse jazz producer's dream. If you can wrap your mind around Mel Torme as Porgy, then you will no doubt find the narration by Al "Jazzbo" Collins -- hipster raconteur and the voice of radio's "The Purple Grotto" -- absolutely right for this tale of sex, drugs, and murder in Charleston's (fictional) Catfish Row.

    The rest of the cast -- Frances Faye, Betty Roche, Johnny Hartman, George Kirby as that dope-peddling Sportin' Life -- are good, but it is Frank Rosolino as Jake who livens up the show: "A Woman is a Sometime Thing" is his beautiful, longing ballad, and "Agoin' Out to the Blackfish Banks" showcases Rosolino's own personality as a wisecracking wit. His rare appearance here as both performer and musician (he's also in the band on trombone) underscores the talent that was cut short by a freewheeling drug habit not many years later.

    Also here are Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra with Maynard Ferguson, Clark Terry, Herbie Mann, and Ray Nance, along with several other orchestras, a number of vocal groups, and just about every available musician in New York and Los Angeles. The whole project is at times overwhelming in its scope, but it does make for a fullscale presentation of the whole Heyward/Gershwin jazz opera that's seldom attempted. Whether the story of "Porgy and Bess" has dated, the score shows a remarkable adaptabity.

    The liner notes admit frankly that this version was part of a mid-fifties jazz-and-standards fusion (meant, primarily, to boost the new LP format) that had seen great success. Miles and Gil Evans' orchestrated "Porgy and Bess" would be released less than two years later, and even that west-coast-cool jazz master Dave Brubeck released an all-Gershwin LP ("Anything Goes") soon after.

    In addition this two-disc set includes a rarely-heard original performance of "California Suite" written by Mel Torme and featuring Peggy Lee. The inclusion of this "lyric and musical narrative dedicated to the Golden State" is awkward in the context of "Porgy and Bess" and certainly awkward in the whole, consisting of some civic-boosterish phrases and groan-inducing rhymes that would probably have been better left to some other disc. The "Porgy and Bess" portion of this program is available by itself elsewhere, although more expensive. Only Mel Torme completists will find the "California Suite" essential listening, and all hipsters outside the door of The Purple Grotto are fairly warned, but this import set is currently cheaper to buy.

      This six CD set has the Central and South American greats, but I prefer the North American who did some of his best composition South of the border. Louis-Moreau Gottschalk had the life of a modern day Rock Star. He is joined in this set by such prominent players as Heitor Villa-Lobos, George Gershwin, Augustin Barrios, and Carlos Guastavino. George Rabol is a favorite pianist.
