The acoustic guitar has always been a traveling instrument, originating in Spain, then gradually adopting (and eventually linking to) the idioms of Africa, India, Europe, and America. On Universal Language, guitarist Marc Antoine picks up on that theme, drawing on his varied musical influences to create a smooth-jazz cocktail with African, Latin American, and European flavors. "N.Y. Strolling" captures the dreamily reflective side of the metropolis, while the playful flute figures of "Celta" hint at the Andes as well as a Celtic infusion from Antoine's Brittany boyhood. African singer-guitarist Lokua Kanza gives distinctive character to "Elikya (Hope)," and Jeff Golub adds hints of sitar and mandolin as well as electric guitar. Producer-arranger-pianist Philippe Saisse, fresh from his tremendous success with Halfway 'til Dawn, makes a huge contribution with his spacious, sonically brilliant settings (even children at play are included), helping merge all of Antoine's different musical sources. Throughout it all, the liquid sounds of Antoine's steel and nylon string guitars remain vivid, mingling cultural influences with the ease of a breeze off the Mediterranean. --Adam Rains

Guitatrist MarcAntoine has made a name for himself in the past five years by applying flamenco stylings to smooth grooves. The new CD, "Universal Language," finds Antoine playing both nylon- and steel-stringed acoustic guitars and features the production work of Philippe Saisse. "I really wanted to have horns on 'Palm Strings' and Philippe went out and got them," says Antoine, talking about a track on the album. "I knew as soon as I wrote it that it had to have those Latin-band horns. I wanted to spice the song in a different way, so we got Dave Valentin because the flute sounds so good with nylon-stringed guitar."

It was about time. We needed some new rythms in Reggaeton. Cd is pretty clasic... but DJ Nerlson was not afraid to experiment with other rythms and fussions. Nice peace.

    5 out of 5 stars Serge is Amazing!.......2004-06-17

    This is a great, relatively low priced introduction to Serge Gainsbourg's greatest hits. Personally I think his earlier works shine much brighter than the later stuff (when he was blazing trails and creating trends rather than following them), so I play the first CD almost exclusively, but it is so strong that it's worth buying the double album. I recently "discovered" Serge and it is amazing what a cutting edge musician he was: sampling, incorporating carribean and African beats, and rapping (in French) in the '60's and early '70's; way before any of those techniques made it to the mainstream of American music. There are songs from 1968 that sound so current, they could be hits today. Also, I'm partial to his really early recordings when he was a crooner in the Yves Montand mold, he really had an amazing, sultry, sexy voice. I highly recommend this CD for anyone interested in Serge or who just loves great eclectic music.

    I believe that Zazie is one of the greatest pop female French artists out there right now. Her music is just so fresh, light, and catchy with a nice, cute, and clever rock edge. I feel that after every album she just gets better, using more interesting sounding rock music into her unique lyrics. I'm glad she's getting some attention in the US, even though im quite surprised that she hasn't crossed over as well as say, Emilie Simon. But hopefully Zazie will one day get airplay, or at least have her CD's sold more often in USA stores!

    I bought this cd on a whim. I had heard Zazie's title song for the "Ma Vie en Rose" film and couldn't get the tune out of my head! So I decided to get this album as a result and I couldn't be happier! She is fantastc! All her cds come w/ lyrics and she sings slowly enough so those just learning French can easily follow along (This ia a great way to improve your French vocabulary!). Since then, I have bought all her cds and love them all. I highly recommend this cd as a Zazie primer.

    Long time ago I saw Zazie's video clip "Zen" on TV and was totally amazed by her extraordinarity and femininity. Starting from that time on, I'm being captivated by her every song. Her voice is so tender and vivid! The "Zen" album is the first one that I purchased, I listened to it, I don't know how many times and am still listening to it. "Zizanie" is the second album, and I think, it's a 10-out-of-10 album. Today I received Zazie's one of the best albums "Made In Love" and am so happy to see it in my own hands and enjoy its full-of-energy songs! Just by this album, I can surely say that Zazie is a real talent. Buy "Made In Love" now, and you'll understand what a real music is!

    This last CD from Zazie is very good but does not compare with her previous one : ZEN. Buy Zen before Made in love. I would describe "Made in love" as being a very cosmopolite and modern content CD. It most of all denunciates racism, women problems and the rapid technological development of computers while combining good melodies and rocking rhythms. What I love about her style is that she has very great lyrics (which is rare today), using plays on words on different themes. She is both traditional and modern in some ways. Moreover, I like when she uses music from another song and by adding new lyrics and tune, transforms it into a new song (she's good at that). "Femmes tefales" was previously "Heures hindoues" from Daho. In "Zen", she did the same with track 5 "je t'aime bien", the music being from "je suis venu te dire que je m'en vais" (hommage to Gainsbourg). Since this CD is mainly french, it would be hard for english native speakers to appreciate it in its whole integrity (content most of all). Anyway, give it a try cos' her music goes beyond international barriers and is very representative of what is the French music trend today. Zazie, continuez ainsi car j'apprecie beaucoup votre musique. Une fan.

    Zazie knows how to say things and this album really proves it. Her texts are so toughtful that it is impossible to not love them. Moreover, her music is brilliant and interesting. I loved her first two albums and this third one is ... amazing. If you want to discover Zazie, Made in love is the album you need!

    Jardim elétrico (eletric garden) is the masterpiece from the greatest brazilian rock band of all times.
    At that time they were entirely rock n' roll, they were no longer in the shadow of the Topicalia movement. But their music goes beyond the labels.
    They were already a quintet and you can realize that the band was very tight.
    Top Top - a very groovy, get into the beat song, something like i hope you f* yourself, cause i don't care.
    Benvinda - a hommage to a famous brazilian soul pop singer.
    Technicolor - Psychedelic ballad, a la Beatles, very beatiful, great, acoustic guitar.
    It's very nice pra xuxu (It's very nice a lot)- J. joplin ballad style, very funny. When you make love to a girl and you just don't have anything smart to say.
    El justiciero - a song in a spanish style (satirical like almost everything)with non sense spanish (?) lyrics.
    Portugal de Navio (Portugal by ship) - Once again a hidden curseword of dirty expression, something like telling someone to k* your a*. a very nice smooth rock tune.
    Virginia - a ballad like Beatles, very pretty.
    Jardim Eletrico (eletric garden) - pure and basic Rock n' roll with some keyboards pretty much like Mountain or Deep Purple stuff.
    Lady lady - Another nice ballad, this one, a little bit sadder than the rest, Nice flute duet with guitar at the end.
    Saravá - a african religious salutation, but, once again, not to be taken seriously. Pure basic Rock n' roll tune.
    Baby - this one really sucks! an english version of a poor song from a brzilian composer from Tropicalia.
    Great album, just buy and have a nice trip.

    Os Mutantes know how to kick it! This album isn't as good as the first three, but it still rocks my world. My favorite songs are "It's very nice pra xuxu", "Portugal De Navio", "Virginia", and "Baby".

    I was very young when I first listened the funky "Top Top" on a radio from Rio de Janeiro. The only Brazilian rock band which had their songs playing as much as the Rolling Stones or Beatles. To foreign fans, the special interest on this album are some songs recorded at Polydor Studios, at London, two of both with lyrics in English: "Baby", the tropicalist song from Caetano Veloso, and the lysergic "Tecnicolor". "Portugal de Navio" is one of my favorities, for Arnaldo Baptista's keyboards and vocals, besides the bluesy harmonica solo. "Virginia" was recorded at London, too, and sounds as melodious as any Beatles songs. The last remarkable song to me, but not the least, is "El Justiciero", and its superb Spanish-styled guitar solo by Sergio Dias. As a plus, the front cover remind us the spirit of those times...

    I was led to believe that this album starts the decline of Mutantes. Who the fool was, I wish I could remember. If only to know never to listen to them again. This is another great chapter for the amazing MUTANTES. Rogerio Duprat is in great form. His arranging is definitely the finest in rock and roll. Still as weird and wild as the earlier albums. No disappointment here!

    I was totally blown away by this CD. I have heard much of Antonie's work but this CD is so mellow yet engaging. I truly enjoyed listening through the entire CD the first time. If you are an Antoine fan, this is a definite addition. Marc continually impresses me, excellent work on the guitar strings!

    There is nothing quite as sweet as the sound of a nylon-string guitar. It's refreshing to see more and more artists playing such a lovely instrument, like Marc Antoine, Peter White and even Sting. Although Antoine doesn't stick strictly to the classical guitar, it is featured prominently on this album lending to the smooth sounds of "Universal Language". As a player, Antoine flavors his music with the sweet sounds of Spain and smooth Jazz.

    The album opens with the upbeat "Palm Strings", with a touch of horn, keyboards and voices to back his playing. In the middle of the song he shares the solo with flutist Dave Valentin before jumping back into the chorus of the song. "El Camino" brings us to a nouveau flamenco sound with a scratch board flamenco strums. The melody has a strong Latin feel, and a touch of electric guitar to add depth. This is a highlight of the album. More of a South American feel can be found in his "Bossa Nouveau" where he lays down a bossa nova rhythm and then solos over it. Add in the sythed strings and the keyboard makes the song full and elegant. Moving to the old country, "Celta" gives the feel of a Celtic or Irish ditty with the opening sounds of the song. The melody carries us over a traditional sounding rhythm as Antoine stretches out his fingers. The outro solo is the shining moment of the songs as Jeff Golub doubles on Mandolin. "Elkya (Hope)" sounds a little bit African with a heavy drum beat which the guitars surround and the wonderful voice of Lokua Kanza.

    Antoine takes us on a world tour of music with "Universal Language." One thing is for certain that no matter where you are from, this album is good. The flavors of the music add variety to the album, but Antoine's playing remains great on every track. His soloing is a good fit for the music, usually providing good counterpoint to the rhythm. A very good smooth Jazz album with a variety of colors.

    The Greatest Guitarest Marc antoine and the best CD ever. Palm strings, (the first song in the CD)was the reason why, i bought this CD, heared it in the radio, and i liked it, when i bought the CD i wasnt expecting that all the songs will be great, but they were. highly recomended, if you like jazz, guitar, this is the CD to buy.

    The first time I heard the songs on this CD I was very impressed. I like all of them. This is rare (for me anyways). Usually you find at least several tracks you don't like on a CD. You can't go wrong with this purchase. The only thing I didn't like was that the CD wasn't long enough. The songs are so enjoyable I could listen to it for hours on end.

    The mutantes first 3 albums are the bomb. They are like the best thing that came to my ears in a while. So I had to get their others. This has a couple of good songs, but nothing like the first 3...man oh man...those first 3 are soooo good. This makes me kind of sad that good things never can last.

    By the early 1970's, the pure experimentalism of the first few lps was more or less gone, but this did not mean that Os Mutantes were selling out or had gone limp. Far from it! This lp, from 1972, finds the band in as superb a form as they had ever been in, and their music reflects this wonderfully.

    The songs range from the cosmic-Santana laden "Cantor de Mambo" to the wonderfully funky "Dune Buggy" to the almost prophetically eerie "Balada do Louco" (ballad of the crazy...considering what would be the, shall we say, eccentrically unusual, future for founder Arnaldo Baptista, the song sends shivers up my spine every time I hear it). From rock-n-roll to their rich ballads, Os Mutantes do not skip a beat on this gem. While I do not recommend this lp as a starting point, (listen to their lps chronologically to best observe their amazing growth as artists), I DO highly recommend the lp as a place to stop, sit down, and enjoy this cult favorite band at the height of their powers. A masterful lp.

    Just think for a moment... why did you come to see the review of this album? To listen... Well, then fasten your seatbelts to a trip through the most powerful Mutantes' work. From pure rock n' roll (Posso Perder Minha Mulher...) to a psychedelic funk (Dune Buggy), spiced with progressive rock (Mutantes e Seus Cometas), a little bit of a comic Santana (Cantor De Mambo) and an anthem for all of us lunatics (Balada Do Louco) this cosmic album shows us what the Mutantes are capable to do with their musical instruments... You'll see why it's impossible to turn your stereo off.

    Mutantes is one of the best rock'n'roll bands around the world. This album shows all the band capabilites in tracks just like the wonderful one from the title, "Pais dos baurets" a rock'n'jazz LSD music...

    Although some people don't consider this album as the last one of the band (Mutantes had released another album in the end of the same year formally as a Rita Lee's solo album), this was the highest point of the band. Mixturing lots of styles (one of the main characteristics from the band), they have written one of the most glorious pages from the rock history of all times. From songs as "Balada do Louco" (ironically, today it sounds as a Requiem for the brilliant leader Arnaldo Baptista) to the ravishing "Beijo Exagerado", from the psychedelic "Dune Buggy" to the beautiful CSN&Y vocals style of "Rua Augusta", from the Latin rythmics of "Cantor de Mambo" to the censored hard rock "A Hora e a Vez do Cabelo Nascer" (by the 70's Brazilian Military Dictatorship), this album is their main masterpiece.

        Biagio Antonacci with his latest record is able to transmit deep feeling with a music that blends with lyrics that capture the essence of love, unions and day challenges.
        " un po' colpa mia...un po' colpa tua...sposiamoci (it is a little my fault...a little yours...let's get married)
        In una bugia..c'è la verità...di vivere" (In a lie...there is the truth...of life)
        these are the first two verses of the song "convivendo", that hold the truth about a life as couple, love, conflicts and compromises.

        From the first song to the last you can not stop singing with the music, scream laud the emotions that build inside.
        Don't be scared if you find yourself to raise the volume and sing your heart out.
        I do suggest to listen to them with someone you love and spend time to read deep the lyrics. Different from a lot of latest lyrics and songs on the market, Biagio Antonacci uses simple words to describe deep feelings.

        "Convivendo" is split in two parts, part I and part II. This review refers to the beautiful part I and it is a must have.
