This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

I saw the band this morning on the CBS news show and dug it so I picked this up today. I was expecting to hear the tight grooves they were playing and instead was treated to a long-form hip hop jazz journey.
Took a second to get used to but damm cool, just ordered the live album from amazon, interested to hear the evolution.
Highly recommend remixed though.
A Darn Good Album!!!.......2003-10-17
If I could sum up this whole entire album, I would say that it's superb. I've never heard anything like this album. It's like they've took hip-hop and jazz to a whole different level.
Take Hip-Hop& Jazz throw in some Meshell N'degeocello seasoned with The Beatnuts a fresh can of Chali 2na& Akil (from Jurassic 5) glazed with some Wordsworth and you have yourself a dish of hip-hop soul. You get your $'s worth on this b/c it's good from start to finish, take track 2 "Tabasco Remix" as an example.
If you know good music, then this is the album for you.
Take my word, you won't be dissapointed...
Solid new CD from Soulive.......2003-10-08
I pre-ordered this album so it arrived in my mailbox on the day of its release (October 7th). I've been listening to it all day and it's a decent album.
Take the original Turn It Out album, re-think all the tunes, throw in samples from the originals, add some bumping bass & turntables, overlay it all with a heavy hip-hop beat and sprinkle some rap on top. That's Turn It Out Remixed.
Fans of Next will appreciate this album, it's got a similar feel (although it takes Next's "concept" even farther). My personal favorite tracks are Doin' Something Remix (feat. Meshell Ndegeocello on electric bass - wicked!), Cash's Dream Remix, and Arruga De Agua Remix.
If you aren't familiar with Turn It Out, I recommend you listen to that first - the tunes on Turn It Out Remixed are cool, but you can appreciate it more when you know the originals.
Overall, it's a solid album. If you know Turn It Out and you like Next, definitely check this out. It's like a merge of the two.

This is one of my favorite albums produced by Soulive. Any fan of the Hammond B-3 organ will be amazed by the talent and style that Neal Evans brings to the organ. Having said that, the BEST song on this album is Azucar. Azucar has a real groovy beat to it, and I can't get enough of the B-3 on this song. Steppin' also has a superba beat that will get anyone out of their chair. The last song I'll speak about is So Live!. This song is 11+ minutes of pure improvisation. About to the 5 minute mark is where you can hear Neal's wailing organ; trembling over the beat. Overall, this album is a great start for anyone just getting a feel for Soulive.

there's some tight jams on this album. i used to think it ruled. then i started listening to lots of different kinds of music and haven't really listened to this again since then. i did once not too long ago and rather enjoyed it. these guys look sharp in concert, they actually just came through my town but i didn't go.
Soulive's True Sound.......2005-01-04
I have listened to every one of soulive's albums. I have been a fan of theirs for years and I like them a lot. I think that they're best album is TURN IT OUT. I think this because it has a nice calm and quiet sound. It is their original, small club sound and it is laid back. It is an album you can just pop in when you are relaxing at home or something you can play at a party. You can lounge or dance to it. It is a Soulive album for all people and shows their distinct, original sound. Eric Krasno uses a little of pedals to change the sound of his guitar, but mostly it is just the true sound of Soulive and the true sound of the band members playing their instruments when they first started out. The band members being Alan Evans-Hammond B3 Organ, Neal Evans-Drums, and Eric Krasno-guitar. This is the true, hip sound of soulive. This album still has the top spot on my list.
funky stuff.......2002-10-21
If you like a funky groove and something new, then anything Soulive does is fantastic. This CD is no exception.

I know Soulive hit it pretty big with Blue Note Records and that Doin Something album, but this is where it started, in my opinion. I really dig this album. It is a tiny bit muddy as far as how it was mixed/produced, but I'd rather have that than the overbrite overproduced sounding Blue note release. And a lot of the grooves on the newer release are just rehashed grooves from this one, but with horns or a new head. So I think this is where it's at. Some damn great tunes and a couple firey live tracks. Wow. Track #2 is Hot! So is Jesus (I think that's the name of it.). Good stuff.

The best ever version.......2002-06-07
The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.
The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13
My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!
The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09
For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

This is a great CD. His lyrics are catchy. At times they go by a little too fast. You may have to read the liner notes to fully appreciate them. I like "Turn Around and Smile" and of course, "Skyler" the most.

This is a great album, just like all the other albums released by Brad Yoder. Talk to Total Strangers has a bunch of my favorite songs from his old albums that I hadn't heard in years and was glad that they resurfaced. It's just a great album all the way through, I highly recommend it.

As always, in this CD Brad is able to capture the simple things in life that we all understand, word them and put them to the right music. Everyone can relate to these songs and that is what makes them so wonderful.

Overall it's a cool disc. Unfortunatly, the biggest disappointments are Skyler and Turn Around and Smile, songs I always loved. They went from pretty and catchy to melodramtic reinterpretations. Paled incredibly to his original tape versions. Also, the little sing along intros could've been cut, expecially noting there's an "overdub choir". I dunno, it has some high points, but it could've been a lot better.

This CD is fantastic. Not a big surprise. I was thrilled to find a bunch of Brad's old songs on it, and the new ones are just as great. His songs are thoughtful and emotional, and the music and lyrics match perfectly. Buy this CD, or his other one (or both) now. It isn't a choice anyone could regret.

earBuzz Review: Metal distorted guitars and vocals that cut the air with a timbre that marries three rock powerhouse voices - Ozzy, Paul Stanley, and Perry Farrel - with lyrics of love, sex, and testosterone - all wound up in a package of 12 tunes for Bradley Gailey's first CD, "You're Gonna Like It". Guitars eat Nugent crunch and the sequenced drum parts, combined with guitar player gut bass, support Gailey's vocals. Track 2, "No Fat Chics", Gailey sings, 'i don't care if you're drunk or straight, who you love when you're on a date, i don't care about beginner's luck, it all comes down to how good she sucks. .i have a problem when I'm drinkin you see, keep the fat chics away from me'. Rock reality. Track 3, "Before I Hang", is an ode to a prisoner on death row - and the rhythm of the vocals along with the chorus is metal magic. The title track, "You're Gonna Like It", is a throwback to 80's hair rock - complete with the acapella-ish chorus mp3'd here as a clip.! Track 9, "Leaving", gives us the Jane's comparison - cool. Track 10, in an audible departure from the rest of the CD, has Gailey crooning to a clean and well recorded acoustic guitar in "Smile". We look forward to hearing more.
