Album Description

This comic has a seemingly endless supply of endearingly off-kilter one liners and an over-active imagination. He's one of the most unique voices in comedy today and has written for/performed on Conan O'Brien, Letterman, and Carson Daly. He's the latest correspondent on The Daily Show with his critiques on pop culture. In 2003, he taped his first stand-up special, "Comedy Central Presents Demetri Martin" which remains one of the highest rated half hours on the network. This release puts all his best material on one CD. The DVD compiles the Comedy Central Presents and a bunch of other secret stuff.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Demetri is a top-notch comic.......2007-07-07

What a breath of fresh air. Demetri is zany, intelligent and highly observant of the world the rest of us take for granted. Topic after topic will find you nodding in agreement as you laugh yourself silly.

4 out of 5 stars Would have been 5 stars but I don't like the songs........2007-05-22

Demetri Martin is a comedic genius. That being said, this cd had some wasted space at the end where three songs tie up time that could have been spent telling more hilarious jokes. His delivery and style are very similar to that of Steven Wright and Mitch Hedberg but with quite a bit more energy. Plus, he is likes to set his jokes to weird music. For some reason it works. Not only that, but on one track he has Will Forte of SNL fame come out and accompany him for a set of jokes. Will just sings random notes and tones between jokes and for some reason it is one of the funniest things I have ever heard. Check it out for that track alone!

1 out of 5 stars Rip off of Hedberg.......2007-05-14

Material, delivery, style - all ripped from Mitch Hedberg. I could list a joke-by-joke comparison but I won't. Is this CD funny? For the most part - yes. Would I recommend this CD if I wasn't a huge fan of Hedberg's work? Yeah. I feel guilty laughing at this album because it is such a clone piece.

Enjoy Martin's work on the Daily Show. Root for his movie deals and applaud his acting. The comedic value of this album belongs to Mitch Hedberg and its a shame that more people don't see through this CD.

5 out of 5 stars If you like...........2007-05-10

Steven Wright and Mitch Hedberg then you will love this guy. Very clever, witty humor and at times a bit random. I've played this one into the ground and I laugh out loud every time. It never stops being funny. The "Personal Information Waltz" gets me everytime. Will Forte's guest appearance is side-splittingly hilarious. Skip the intro and "The Grapes Song" and this album is a perfect listen. Great jokes you'll be repeating around the water cooler at work, so to speak.

"I used to compete in sports a lot... but then I realized you can buy trophies. Now I'm good at everything."

5 out of 5 stars Demetri Rocks.......2007-05-10

Demetri Martin is halarious. If you have seen him on SNL or Comedy Central and liked him, you should definitely buy his CD. It also comes with a bonus DVD that includes his first major Comedy Central appearance along with a few treats for his fans. "These Are Jokes" never gets old--I still listen to my CD on long trips or whenever I am down. I hope he comes out with a new CD soon; this guy is good.

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. 4 out of 5 stars Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04

This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.

5 out of 5 stars FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16

This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.

It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.

On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.

This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28

Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.

If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15

I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.

Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

4 out of 5 stars Very Functional.......2006-03-19

This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

On Sea Music, former Del Fuegos frontman turned kid's music songster Dan Zanes performs a set of old sea shanties in a rough-hewn but charming manner. He takes songs that have been worn smooth from constant use, artfully scuffs them up, and restores them to their former "ragged but right" glory. His performance of "Shenandoah," for example, features some fine Leadbelly-style 12-string guitar picking and an anguished vocal that almost erases the memory of the polite, formal choral arrangements that usually smother the song. And his "Sloop John B" sails along on jaunty banjos and mandolins rather than the slick harmonies of the Beach Boys' version. These shanties were originally created by sailors as work songs, and consequently they have choruses that are perfect for singing along. Zanes is joined on many tracks by an enthusiastic chorus of kids who are obviously having a wonderful time belting out the sometimes salty lyrics. As with all of Zanes's recordings for children, adults are likely to find themselves listening to this wonderful music even when the kids aren't underfoot. --Michael John Simmons

5 out of 5 stars On any list of great "kids" CDs you will love too........2007-03-28

My personal favorite of DZ's "kids" records.

This one *is* great for sing-alongs with the kids, but is a fine old timey record of sea songs that can be enjoyed by anyone. Loose-limbed versions of "Shenendoah", "Sloop John B" and "Cape Cod Girls" are fine and fun.

"Strike The Bell", "Blow Ye Winds", "Leaving of Liverpool" and others are fun sing-alongs as well as good history lessons. My 3.5 year-old and I enjoy this record equally.

It's particularly nice that Zanes' website has the lyrics AND chords -- really helps extend the listening and playing pleasure. I also appreciate that DZ doesn't dumb down the music for kids at all -- you get a real feel of the folk tradition of handmade music here.

5 out of 5 stars great for kids, great for adults!.......2007-02-27

for a fun cd of classic sea shanties, and a kids' cd that you won't get sick of, this is the one. we've given this to many kids (2 and up) and all parents have been very thankful! we've had it for 2 yrs. and we listen to it all the time.

5 out of 5 stars favorite.......2007-01-10

This cd stays in our car stereo for weeks and weeks. We sing a long and our 3 yr old likes it too.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-01

I like anything to do with the sea and I bought this CD on the strength of the glowing reviews. Having lived in a port city in England that hosts an annual Sea Shanty festival, I was fortunate to hear some of the best shanty singers around. I had high expectations for Dan Zales and was sorely let down. The music is basic and unpolished, which should be a good thing. Shanties are supposed to be raw, gutsy. But the quality of the music here is downright amateurish -- merely a sing-a-long with the children in the kitchen. I wanted more for my money.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for kids and adults.......2006-03-29

I played this CD in the car while taking my great granddaughter (8 mos) to work yesterday. The songs were so irresitable I found myself singing along, even with chanties I'd not heard before. Then, from the back seat, I heard loud cooing and chortling noises in a little voice. Morgan was singing along too. Guess this CD is a hit with everyone.

It's almost impossible to believe it didn't already exist, but now that it does, you can bet the sure-to-go-platinum These Are Special Times will turn up under many a Christmas tree this year (the perfect gift for the person who has everything?). The prolific princess of pop has thrown together a mixture of contemporary and traditional holiday favorites, bordering on too-cute and kitschy only on the intro to "Feliz Navidad." For many, Dion is an acquired taste, but even naysayers may enjoy her rare moments of restraint on a smoky version of "Blue Christmas." "The Prayer," a duet with Andrea Bocelli, is set to become this season's "Time to Say Goodbye," but it will have to battle it out with the R. Kelly duet, "I'm Your Angel," first. --Rebecca Wallwork

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Christmas Album .......2006-12-06

When I got this CD from my friend as a birthday present, I was feeling a bit sceptical. But after hearing the opening track which is O Holy Night, oh my god, this version is the best version of the song ever and l fell in love with this album.
I will break down the review for each track.
1. O Holy Night - The best redention of the song ever. She sings it powerfully and full of emotion. You will be blown away. No one can outdone Celine's O Holy Night.
2.Don't Save It All for Christmas Day - This song was written by Celine. This song reminds us to give or show love to everyone everyday. Clay Aiken even covered this song on his Christmas Album.
3. Blue Christmas - This song shows a jazzy side of Celine. Smoky, mellow Christmas song, you will love it. Diana Krall on piano; you can't go wrong :)
4. Another Year Has Gone By - Laid back, a relaxing song. Bryan Adams wrote this song.
5. The Magic of Christmas Day - uptempo catchy Christmas song done by Celine. I like the 'Christmas Eve' - track 11 better though.
6. Ave Maria - It is heavenly sung and powerful. I don't particularly care about this song too much.
7. Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful) - Beautiful and churcy with chruch organ and choir.
8. The Christmas Song - A nice soothing christmas song to warm up your Christmas spirit.
9. The Prayer - This song has a nice lyric and full of meaning, making us believe in angels
10. Brahm' Lullaby - A lullaby song good for sleeping. :)
11. Christmas Eve - This is one of the best new songs in the album. This song reminds me of MAriah Carey's All I Want For Christmas For You. It's upbeat and catchy, making you want to go out and have fun on Christmas eve.
12. These Are The Special Times - a well done song written by Diane Warren. Christina Aguilera did a cover of this song for her Christmas album. But Celine's version is much better than her.
13. Happy Xmas (War is Over) - I love this song since it has a peace message for everyone and she did a fantastic cover of John & Yoko'. I also like the cover sung by Sarah McLachlan.
14. I'm Your Angel - It used to be my favorite song. This song was no.1 on the billboard chart for a couple weeks.
15.Feliz Navidad - Celine with Family wishing us Xmas.
16. Les Cloches Du Hameau - it's so so, this track is my least favorite.

In conclusion, if you like a well professionally arranged Christmas album (David Foster produced some of the songs) you should definetely be getting this album. Also this album makes a perfect gift for Christmas gift to everyone celebrating Christmas.
Pairs this album with Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas and Sarah McLachlan's WinterSong, you are going to have a Christmas Blast.

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but not a classic..........2006-11-09

Album in a nutshell: Celine Dion presents an unusual Christmas collection that is not up to her usual standards. All the original songs are great, the covers of Christmas songs are pretty good, but some of the songs don't belong. I know Celine wants to include a French Christmas song on here, but "Les Cloches Du Hameau" is kind of annoying, as is her rendition of "Feliz Navidad." "O Come All Ye Faithful" is too high church sounding and she tries too much to sound like a female Elvis on "Blue Christmas." And someone please tell me what the hell "Brahms Lullaby" is doing on this album! But she redeems herself with exceptional originals, a nice cover of "The Christmas Song," and a beautiful rendition of "O Holy Night." A pretty nice offering, but I expected better from Celine.

Best Song: "Another Year Has Gone By"

Christmas traditionals / Total tracks: 7/16

Sample This: The fun "Christmas Eve" and the seasonally uplifting "The Magic of Christmas Day"

What to Avoid: sad family renditions of "Feliz Navidad" and "Les Cloches Du Hameau" (she could have included her family on better songs) and
the sappy, out-of-place "Brahms' Lullaby"

The album in 2 words: mixed bag

Stocking Stuffer or under-the-tree: stocking stuffer

5 out of 5 stars One of Celine's best albums to be enjoyed any time of year..........2006-07-20

Celine Dion's Christmas album "These Are Special Times" has a little bit of everything from traditional holiday favorites like "Oh Holy Night", "Ave Maria", and "O Come All Ye Faithful", to Christmas "pop" classics including Elvis Presley's "Blue Christmas", John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Xmas", Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song", and Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad". Also included in this collection is her huge hit with R. Kelly "I'm Your Angel."

The songs on this album are very good and well performed, and this CD contains well over an hour's worth of Christmas music. You are indeed getting your money's worth here! Celine and her family (who also sing on the album's last two tracks) really throw their heart and soul into this album.

Any fan of Celine's music will absolutely love this Christmas CD to be enjoyed year round!

5 out of 5 stars O My Lord!!!!!!!!!.......2006-04-11

This album is what christmas is all about. And I can't stop listening to O Holy Night it is the best arragement of all and Ave Maria is another great arrangement. But on O Holy Night at the end she gave it her most powerful ending anyone has ever done nothing can top it, when I first heard it it I had great tears of joy I felt as if I was being lifted of the ground through out this song. Its worth the trouble to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music!!!.......2006-03-23

Awesome...simply awesome!!
I got this cd last week when my friend from Bangalore (India) sent me as she knew that i am a great fan of Celine and as i live in a small town, i don't get international music here.
The first time i listened to this cd, it left me astonished. Even though this is not Christmas now, the cd brought December in March. As a 19 yr old, i love listening to a variety of music ( Imagine me listening to Celine Dion ) but i happen to like this cd a lot along with other Celine Dion albums except The Collector's Series (i feel that cd is incomplete).
The songs r superb here especially Adeste Fidelis, Another Year Has Gone By, The Magic of Christmas Day, The Prayer and Happy X'mas...( I am sure John Lenon is pretty proud of Celine for doing his song proud ).
The title track is good too(Even Christina did a cover of this song).
Well, this cd has just been declared 5X platinum being the second best selling Christmas album in the US....Really not very surprising after u give this cd a spin and worldwide sales is over 16 million...GREAT...GREAT....GREAT.
Keep it up Celine. Go get it people, buy it for yourself, gift it to your loved ones and everybody else. This will be the best Christmas gift ever to someone by you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fun tunes for fun people.......2006-07-24

The Mel-Tones' "Surf Sensation" smacks of retro '60s surf culture. Each of the album's 33 tracks is a punchy little 2-minute surf vignette with a personality of its own. "Surf Sensations" boasts rollicking, uptempo rhythms, lush reverb guitar sounds, and the occasional gleefully shouted word. Highlights include "Kung Fu Saturdays," "Surfin' Natasha," and "Curl Rider Stomp." The music is vaguely reminescent of Dick Dale and the Del-Tones, but with a fresh new flavor. It occasionally strays from surf to spy, martial arts and spaghetti western, but all while maintaining the same distinct instrumental sound. Hard to believe the Mel-Tones hail from Canada, eh?

5 out of 5 stars Superb up-tempo surf.......2006-07-10

If you like up-tempo surf with a 60s flavor, along the lines of the Astronauts, and early Jon & The Nightriders, then you'll love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Another essential cd for the surf music fanatic!.......2006-03-29

I had to savor the content of this cd for a couple months before reviewing it. One thing for certain- you don't need to be living in California circa early 1960's to write/perform great surf music. The boys from Montreal are no exception in "Surf Sensation". Tracks such as Kung Fu Saturdays"," Breakers at Hanalei","The Last Papaya","Distant Shores", and "Cabo Del Cabo" are amongst my favorites. Excellent guitar melodies throughout accented with tasty trem picking, trem dives, muted arpegios, with the manditory drenching of Fender reverb! I don't proclaim you'll like all 33 tracks; you have to listen in order for them to grow on you. No words in the music to anoy or offend you. Surf Music-it's a good thing, very cool, and the Meltones/Surf Sensation is all that!!!

5 out of 5 stars immaculate surf tunes.......2004-10-11

If you are surfing amazon.com for some surf music gems to buy, you have found one right here! This is a stunning and exciting collection from these masters of surf guitar from Canada! The interplay between these two guitarists is incredible, showing a true mastery of the surf music sound. All the songs sound very vintage and totally authentic. Listen to this alblum and you are indeed transported back to the early 60's. This surf music has a darker, aggresive theme to the songs as you can hear from the samples. If you liked some of Dick Dales early surf music you will indeed love this alblum by the Mel-tones. I actually think these guys are better than Dick Dale! You will not find a better surf guitar alblum at Amazon.com, and I give my word on that.

5 out of 5 stars Gino Vannelli - These Are The Days.......2007-05-30

The man still has it! This CD is a perfect demonstration of his growth and flexibility. Although his old music is classic, he has also dispensed new material in the opera and jazz genres as well. My favorites on this CD are "Venus Envy", "Right Where I Am", and "It's Only Love". These should receive much more airplay than they do. Its too bad Mr. Vannelli's music is still as underrated as it is!

4 out of 5 stars Gino's latest...... " These Are The Day's ".......2007-03-20

This album was released in fall of 2006 and for me I have been playing it every day. The first half of the CD - 7 tracks - is new material and show Gino's range of writing skills, just like his last album Canto from 2003. The reason that I gave it 4 stars out of 5 is I was disapointed in the second half of the album. They are older songs from past albums which would have been OK had he put a new spin too them. I know from watching a DVD about the last album Canto and his mind set about what all the album was too be about, that he had a slower version of "I Just Wanna Stop". It was live on stage with the full orchastria and showed his openness to rethink a song in his past and make it sound new. So I was hoping this would be on the CD but sadly it was not to be, but still a good listen of your time. I have been a dedicated fan of his work since 1976 when I saw him live and I have every album and half of his concert tour DVD's, so I know a little about his unique sound.

4 out of 5 stars Mellow fun tunes.......2007-01-08

Finally something new from one of my favorite artists. The new stuff is quite good, kind of jazzy and fun, but still not as great as some of my earlier favorites. Generallly upbeat, great vocals. Should be liked by most Gino fans.

5 out of 5 stars He's Back!!!.......2006-07-27

Yes, we all know half the CD is "old stuff." Whatever- I'm paying for the new stuff. "It's Only Love" is probably the hippest thing he's ever done. A guy trying to be cool about getting dumped, "excuse me while I go off and die." You have to listen to it over and over to catch everything. "Venus Envy" would be my second favorite. Its message is great- why do women feel they need all that plastic surgery?

"Great Divide" is so sad, so full of that realization that, "Oh, boy, I have really screwed up my life."

It's also great to hear his voice sounding as good as twenty years ago. So many singers really lose range and force as they age. No, he's not going to hit those "Fly into this Night" high notes. He's 54, okay? But, with this release, I think Gino can really get the spotlight back on himself, gain better backing, and really come out with some terrific stuff in the future.

3 out of 5 stars new good, and old still good.......2006-07-13

the only thing about this cd that is bad is all the songs were not new, but Im glad for the new 6 and they are really good.
they are not the old sound from the 70's but they are good .
he has gone a new way on some of the new songs and they are very
good with a little twist here and there with a sound he has never done before which is good seeing this is 2006, I hope tho that he goes on tour to sapport this cd cos he would sell a lot more if he did.Is this something your need to have ? Yes!

Here's a major label debut that doesn't disappoint. For starters, Midwestern piano trio the Bad Plus--in the same vein as Dave Douglas or Brad Mehldau--clearly know a thing or two about how to mix pop music with forward-thinking jazz. The group covers Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Blondie's "Heart of Glass," and Aphex Twin's "Flim" with wit, virtuosity, and respect to the originals--these interpretations never sound in the least bit cliched or overwrought. But even the new material on These Are the Vistas is loaded with infectious hooks. Ethan Iverson uses the entire range of his piano with speed and dexterity; David King's drum fills are deftly placed, at times harkening more to electronica music's lightening fast percussion flourishes than anything on the jazz scene; and bassist Reid Anderson somehow keeps up with the madness and maintains a steady beat. Amidst all the fun is a dynamic record that holds your attention. A wonderful effort. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars Modern Jazz Done Right..........2007-03-09

Upon purchasing this album for the 2nd time, I'm glad that I did. I do have to say that you have to like jazz to really enjoy and appreciate this album though. It's not for today's popular music audience. It's also not for the fans of old jazz either. The covers of recent popular music hits (Smells Like Teen Spirit / Heart of Glass) are excellent tunings that provide enough differentiations to make them beat alone. This album has a weird and small audience so I'm not recommending it to everyone but to those few who enjoy modern jazz with a flair, give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Dull after the first listen.......2006-04-12

This might seem exciting at first, but when it come down to it, there's very little content behind this band's bravado and image. Even the name of the band seems to be shoving their 'coolness' down your throat. And that's just what the music is like, when actually, they're just not that good. This disc is at best dull, and at times it's quite messy and annoying.
If you really want to hear a piano trio that pushes out the boundaries of what's possible with that set-up, check out anything by Hiromi. Hiromi's stuff really puts this lame effort in its place.

3 out of 5 stars Jazz for indie rockers.......2006-03-30

The Bad Plus have done well at promoting their image. If I didn't already know about them, I would swear they were an indie rock band. Their obvious image consciousness makes me wonder if they were ever in indie rock bands before. Also, their choice of material (popular indie rock songs and campy covers) was brilliant in attracting young fans. In fact, I was at their show and there seemed to be more young people looking around laughing and smiling at their covers than there were paying attention to the music, so that was an effective way to draw them in.

However, I think it's kind of a shame that they resort to cheap gimmickry so often. In fact, I would go as far as saying that they would not be nearly as popular if they hadn't covered "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (a very boring rendition, by the way). And the use of walkie talkies to produce feedback was pretty pathetic and didn't add anything to the music -just more cheap gimmickry.

This band gets WAY too much credit/press. Their popularity is more a result of clever marketing than it is great playing but that's the music industry for you. A lot of people are praising them for popularizing jazz again. It's great that they are attracting so many kids to jazz, but it's not like they are the first jazz musicians to play contemporary pop songs. If everyone continued to play My Funny Valentine forever, jazz would have been long dead by now.

Having said that, I will say that their original compositions are pretty good. And while I think they are all competent musicians, I prefer to spend my time listening to artists who play with more feeling. Maybe if they jettisoned the pianist and got someone with soul I'd like them more. This guy's playing is so sterile. He sounds like he came straight from the conservatory. I guess that's fine if that's your taste, but it's not mine.

I saw another review that compares them to Mingus, Rahsaan, etc. Now those guys played with feeling! Sadly, the Bad Plus do not.

4 out of 5 stars Transcendent Jazz.......2006-03-13

With unparralleled rivals, Bad Plus stormed the scene, or i should say made it...The edginess acts like Medeski, Martin, and Wood were trying to implement to help bridge the gap between old school jazz traditionalists and new age freeform hipsters was burst wide open on this debut album displaying a sick amount of coiled terror of talent...While the cover songs were, as usual, exploited to shock and awe it's listeners, the originals displayed the sort of schizophrenic genius that you pray they will continue to wake up with..

5 out of 5 stars Smoooooth........2006-01-20

I'll start off by saying I like it when music gets a bit chaotic, so my tastes lean towards that sort of thing; ie: Mingus, Deerhoof, Sonic Youth, etc. However, I think my opinion of this record goes beyond that.

I can completely understand a lot of the negative reviews. People get comfortable in their tastes, and I even think to an extent jazz trios have started to get comfortable and even safe ( perhaps for fear of criticism? Although I'm definitely digging the Brad Mehldau trio these days) as well. So I find it particularly refreshing that these guys not only have an interesting take on the form, but they're actually (sort of) making money at it! I know a few people playing every night and barely making ends meet.

Another thing I noticed is the criticism towards their playing ability. I'd like to offer one word to those folks: Metametrics. Look it up. In fact while you're at it check out Post Minimalism, Rock, PostClassic, etc. These guys know how to play; I've never heard anyone mess with the rhythm so much and still stay so locked in. They pull in a lot of elements and somehow manage to make it work.

Every so often I come across an album that just works. It's especially cool when it happens to be in a form that seems to need a breath of fresh air. With these guys, and Madlib (Yesterday's New Quintet), jazz is something we can keep going and have it appeal to new generations. Genres and "sticking to form" should be saved for the class room, not kept in mind when listening to a record this righteous.

Check it.

1 out of 5 stars BORING.......2006-02-15

I am yet to understand why this movie is compared to the likes of Platoon. There is no question which of the two is the better one. I was bored out of my mind after an hour. I turned it off and then when I had time to waste, I finished it. I am sorry I did. 2 Hours I will never get back. I know that evertone is different, but if you have not seen this movie and are thinking about viewing it, do so on a Sunday when you have NOTHING else to do. The only highlight was the Drill Instructor. He managed to crack a smile out me on occasion.

1 out of 5 stars Only One Good Track.........2002-10-14

The first one... The rest of the CD is movie instrumentals that are excellent for falling asleep to, but that's about it.

3 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2002-02-21

Abigail Mead, the composer of eight songs of this soundtrack, is actually Vivian Kubrick, daughter of Stanley Kubrick.
The disc has 15 tracks:

The first song is a hip-hop/techno mix of the cadences sung by Sgt Hartman in the first part of the movie, it is not a beautiful or good and I don't think it was necessary to include it.

The songs 2 to 7 are songs from the sixties and hear them during the movie creates a "mood" for the movie, for example, the song These Boots Are Made For Walking, by Nancy Sinatra and the scene in Vietnam which a prostitute is walking fits just perfectly and watch the movie without this song would have much less effect. Although they are not complex songs and most of the lyrics are foolish it's worth to have them in the score because they made a good part in the movie.

Song number 8 is the Marine's Hymn, a nice inclusion even thought it's not likely that someone would play this song very often at home.

The rest of the score are the instrumental themes composed by Abigail Mead, some of them are quiet and peaceful like Leonard, and others are more aggressive like Parris Island, with some nice stereo effects.

This is not the best score for a Stanley Kubrick movie and I suggest you to listen to it before you buy or you can have some bad surprises like not listening to Paint it Black, because it was not included or odd songs like Time Suspended. Actually I would suggest this soundtrack for Collectors, Kubrick fans or people with eclectic musical taste.

5 out of 5 stars Boot Camp scenes are hauntingly realistic.......2000-08-04

The best part of this movie is the beginning, when they show what a raw recruit goes through at Boot Camp. It brings back a lot of memories because it was so well done. Lee Ermey just is exactly what a DI is at Paris Island. All the nuances, the lingo, the discipline. The acting is all first rate. Also, the combat portrayals in Hue City showed the type of frustration that vets faced in Vietnam. Snipers were nightmares to deal with. By the time you snuffed 'em out, you lost three or four men. The other movie that, in my opinion is the best war movie ever made, is Hamburger Hill. That movie showed what real grunt life was like in the bush.

5 out of 5 stars Full Metal Jacket.......2000-05-16

Full metal jacket is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen. Although the language is too strong for many people (not for me), it definately puts the point across about the harsh life of Marines during training on the Island. The sniper scene is very well done as well. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is portrayed by an excellent actor who is able to scream obscenities at his troops without even cracking a smile, I would like to see the bloopers reel from Full Metal Jacket.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Simple Exercise Songs For Young Children From Bobby Susser.......2006-05-22

I have three day care centers in Florida where music and exercise are favorites in the curriculum for my little children. This collection of very simple songs and exercises is just that. It shows, through the repetition of catchy lines, that Bobby Susser is very aware of children's needs. Susser knows that when he hits upon something catchy for the kids and through his repetition of lyrical and musical phrases, not to let up, giving the kids just what they want. He doesn't give them too much, but enough so they are thoroughly interested, satisfied, and enthusiastic. He knows when to keep going, and when to let up. For those of you who work with kids, you know the importance of repetition. Bobby Susser has mastered repetition of very catchy sections of songs he's created and in doing so, holds children's interest, gives them a heck of a good time, and teaches them all at the same time. I majored in preschool education and music, and believe me, Bobby Susser is a subtle master at teaching through his simple, catchy, songs with repetetive phrases written especially for little ones.

5 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS OLD TRIED AND TRUE.......2006-05-04

I AM A KINDERGARTEN TEACHER AND HAVE USED THIS ALBUM IN CASSETTE FIRST. THEN I BOUGHT THE CD WHEN MY TAPE WORE OUT. I JUST GOT ANOTHER CD BECAUSE I GAVE A TEACHER FRIEND THE CD TO BORROW. SHE LOVED IT SO MUCH FOR HER KINDERGARTEN CLASS THAT SHE ASKED IF SHE COULD KEEP IT. I GAVE IT TO HER AS A GIFT, AND I AM ENJOYING WORKING WITH MY NEW CD, AND WATCHING MY CLASS ENJOY THEMSELVES WHILE THEY EXERCISE AND LEARN OTHER GOOD HEALTH HABITS TO THESE CATCHY SONGS."WIGGLE WIGGLE AND OTHER EXERCISES" IS ONE EARLY CHILDHOOD ALBUM YOU CAN SURELY LABEL AS 'OLD TRIED AND TRUE.' IT NEVER FAILS TO WORK WITH THE KIDS.

5 out of 5 stars The Benchmark Exercise Album For Young Children.......2005-10-24

While B.B. King is the benchmark guitarist for playing the blues, Ray Charles, the benchmark singer for combining soul and gospel music, Barbra Streisand the benchmark vocalist for her range and clarity, Paul Simon, the benchmark singer/songwriter for telling his stories in song format, and Bob Dylan, the benchmark singer/songwriter for using unique phrases and the delivery of them, Bobby Susser's album "Wiggle Wiggle And Other Exercises" is undoubtedly the benchmark album for original songs for young children to exercise to. I am a kindergarten teacher, and I specialize in teaching music, and subjects through music. I have used virtually every collection of songs available for young children to sing along with and exercise to. Some are OK, and some are somewhat good. However, if you want the real thing, Bobby Susser gives it to you in every exercise song in this collection. The repetition of his catchy phrases and melodies is not boring, but rather very successful in teaching the kids the songs and exercises, and in keeping the children always interested. He's a master at using repetition in a positive way for children. It is very obvious, after seeing the children respond immediately to the simple rhythms, friendly vocal deliveries, and all the fun and easy to learn songs that convey the importance of exercise, good health habits, having fun, and incorporating these ideas into your daily routine at an early age, Bobby Susser knows how to make the very most of a song, and a simple 'Wiggle' for young children like noone else I've heard in the nineteen years I've taught little children.
When you listen to the songs "Wiggle Wiggle", "March Around In A Circle", "Let's Pretend", "Hello Hello Goodbye Goodbye", and "Rest Awhile", it is apparent that Bobby Susser is no accident and creates collections for young children that makes children's music history the first time any of his titles are heard. Anyone can easily tell that he cares and is dedicated to the children.

5 out of 5 stars The Finest Kid Songs For Kid Exercises From Bobby Susser.......2005-05-05

This album has everything you possibly want and need for an exercise album for young kids. My preschool class never tires of "Wiggle Wiggle And Other Exercises." Every song is so catchy and exciting for my class. Every song states a purpose, and has printed lyrics and suggested activities in the teacher/parent notes booklet. Subjects covered are developing gross and fine motor skills, coordination, right/left discrimination, listening skills, rhythm, counting, and good health habits, while exercising, and singing. Bobby Susser ends this great collection with a soothing rest song for the kids. This album has it all.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Susser's Songs And Exercises Are #1 On My Kids' List.......2005-04-04

I'm a first grade teacher who has worked with exercises, and movement songs with my kids. From day to day and year to year this Bobby Susser album "Wiggle Wiggle And Other Exercises" is #1 on my kids' list. The songs are very catchy, but also simple enough for young kids to easily learn. The beats and rhythms are excellent for my young class. They quickly learn the songs and exercises, and have loads of fun doing and learning important health and exercise habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.
