This recording starts off with Paul Jackson, a chameleon of a musician, slipping into the increasingly faceless George Benson smooth school of octave guitar playing. Jackson checks into the similar styles of Norman Brown and Ronny Jordan on the first two tracks before displaying his own somewhat distinct voice on the third track, the ballad "Pour Noelle," featuring a soulful Boney James on sax. The Power of the String then suddenly makes a sharp turn from smooth jazz onto the R&B road with a funky, radio-friendly version of the Whispers' dance classic, "Rock Steady," complete with clap track. Then comes the beautiful voice of Christian singer and former pop star Deniece Williams on a thinly disguised Jackson hymn, "You Always Satisfy," followed by a rerecording of a tune written by a member of the singing gospel family, the Winans. Jackson sings Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" in surprisingly good voice with members of Take 6. The album ends with a straight-ahead jazz waltz that perhaps only devoted fans of this guitarist or his instrument will have sat through after being faced with such a hodge-podge of styles. --Mark Ruffin

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

The thesis that a child's brain can grow from listening to music is inarguable. The science is somewhat simple: for kids hearing music, the real meal of the sound is its connections and structures, both of which teach the brain how to organize phenomena. Johann Sebastian Bach's music is a stunning study in this regard, thanks at certain points to his keenly built, pristinely laid out musical architecture and at other times to the mix of intricate detail and delicate gloss. With this collection, drawn from Columbia Records' vast vaults, you get the best of the gentle scenarios, beginning with "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and extending to E. Powers Biggs's breathy organ on "Be Thou Art Near." Firecrackers pop a little more cracklingly as Lutz Kirchhof performs a pair of lute suites and Anthony Newman takes on a pair of the famed Goldberg Variations on harpsichord. At its most upbeat, this collection is still reserved and cautious, exciting enough to grab attention but not so much that the music takes over as its own isolated activity. It's strong but still fits nicely into one's routine. And even if a segment on this 78-minute disc isn't to your child's liking, it's easy to move on, as most episodes last less than 3 minutes. --Andrew Bartlett

This is a beautiful CD, and my husband and I (fortyish and empty nesters) listen to this CD every night when we go to bed. It is gentle and very soothing and puts us right to sleep. I primarily bought this album because of "Turkish March/Ruins of Athens." I am writing a children's book and that particular piece embodies my little pixie heroine just right! I recommend this CD to everyone...not just babies!

5 out of 5 stars Great music/stories as well as sound quality.......2004-02-11

The stories on CD are well written and very entertaining. I listened through all 3 CDs in one sitting when I got them! What's more, its sound quality is very good. I have other classical music CDs for kids and almost always I'm disappointed with the sound quality. (Violines sound like they have flu!)

This is a great buy for kids of all ages!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for Kids.......2002-01-01

My two children, ages 7 and 5 received the Classical Kids Music Box, volumes 1 & 2 for Christmas this year and they can't seem to get enough of it! Each box contains 3 CD's, each on a different composer. Some are narrated by children and tell a story of the particular composer. Their popular compositions play in the background - this way the listener hears a partial biography of the composer as well as some music. Volume 1 contains stories of Handel, Beethoven and Vivaldi, and Volume 2 contains stories of Mozart, Bach and Tchaikovsky. I highly recommend this for all children who listed to music CD's, whether they're musically inclined or not.

5 out of 5 stars Music Box Series.......2001-04-23

To say this series of music is "CAPTIVATING" is a total understatement. We have enjoyed these immensely for 2 years now and are hoping they will continue to release more composers. These well-told stories will hold the interest of everyone at any age while introducing them to these brilliant composers. My son is a 12 year old AAA travel hockey player and listens to these CD's while going to sleep, every night, without fail! Last week he asked if he could go online to find music and I thought he was looking for something along the line of latest hits. What a surprise to find him looking for more of the Music Box Series. These collections are as valuable to classical music as Harry Potter has become to children's reading! The story of Beethoven is especially poignant, when you realize what he accomplished with his gift in spite of his many challenges. I won't give away the plots of these wonderful stories told in this series, however I will say they will be listened to over and over again! And just like Harry Potter, you can't wait for the next one!

5 out of 5 stars absolutely worth owning.......2003-02-15

I have many classical guitar albums, including several by John Williams in solo, duet and concerti, and this is one of my favorites. The playing is virtuosic as is expected from Williams, but the repertoire is varied and includes litte known works, including a Shostakovich duet written for guitar! Some reviewers haven't cared for the "mediocre" compositions from Australia, Ireland and the Americas, but I have to strongly disagree. Brouwer can at times be difficult, but he's hardly a slouch. Besides, if these compositions were worthy to draw the attention of one of the greatest guitarists of all time (and a fine composer in his own right), I think they're worthy of ours!
Buy this album, listen to it a few times for familiarization, and enjoy it for years to come.

      3 out of 5 stars Impeccable playing.......2002-08-16

Williams and Kain display their considerable talents in playing with fire and reserve, virtuosity and taste and are generally close to perfect. The De Falla,Granados,Takemitsu,Hand,Soler and Shostakovich works are the standouts. The disappointing part of the album comes with the Westlake,Houghton,Brouwer and Verdery pieces. The greatest playing in the world can't disguise mediocre compositions. This is an overall good album but it does require skipping around a lot of superfluous stuff.
Get this one if you happen across a used copy.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific collection of pieces.......2002-04-01

I have had this CD for several years, and still enjoy it as much as when it was first given to me. It is being passed around the family, as my son owned a copy, then bought me one, and I have just ordered a copy for my daughter-in-law.

Some of the pieces are familiar, but if you persevere, I am sure you will come to enjoy the works that are new to you.

I was sorry to see that one reviewer did not enjoy the Australian works. The Westlake piece [Songs from the Forest] is fairly light and very melodic. If you enjoy it, you should check out his Antarctica music, which exists in several different versions.

Kain's Guitar Trek recordings are also worth hunting for.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous world music, in the truest sense...........2002-01-03

John Williams and Timothy Kain, two masters of their chosen instrument, with more in common than just the country of their birth. Kain's guitar teacher at the conservatory in Australia had studied with Williams' father, Len. Williams and Kain first worked together in 1992, and enjoyed the experience. The two men form a complimentary duo in both technique and approach to music. Their playing is flawless. Their duets are seamless.

On this disk, Williams and Kain "journey outside the confines of the classical guitar repertoire." What a magnificent journey it is, too! The Mantis & The Moon contains 18 selections by 12 composers, grouped together by the cultures of the 6 lands they represent...Spain, Australia, Ireland, the Americas, Japan, and Russia.

This is beautiful music performed by two of the greatest guitarists of our generation. These performances go beyond classical, folk, pop or the usual guitar "genre" pieces. Yet the music is lovely, enjoyable, and accessible to the listener. If you love guitar music, you owe it to yourself to pick up this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Mantis and the Moon.......2001-12-13

Williams and Kain play very well as a duo. My favorite pieces on this CD are "Sonata in A," "Capitola," and "Jongo." "Sonata in A" is acoustical honey for the ears, as it epitomises Chopin's comment that nothing sounds sweeter than a guitar--except two guitars. "Jongo" is simply dazzling (but far from simple to perform). However, I don't like the Australian compositions (sorry about that critique of your Aussie mates, Mr. Williams). A few other selections are uninspiring as well. It may come as a surprise, but I prefer the Parkening and Brandon duo's performances of "La Vida Breve" and "Intermezzo" over Williams and Kain. Nonetheless, Williams and Kain put in some fine performances on this CD.

      3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2005-11-01

Their simple melodies and simple words were entertaining in my high school and early college years. I can see why I liked them back then. They did some nice harmonies and their music was fun.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Solid Solid.......2002-01-22

Although not as good as Present Tense, Boomerang is still one hell of an album. Shoes on Ice really helps, too - they sound so tight and the drumming is so reserved compared to their later incarnations that if it weren't for the crowd, you'd have trouble identifying it as a live EP. If you like melodic pop, triple harmonies, almost enough fuzz, and solid boy-loses-girl lyrics, definitely give this a listen.

I can't believe no one has written a review of this yet. If you don't own it, buy it now. If you have the vinyl version, get the cd. All the songs are great, and there are also live versions of 6 songs from Present Tense and Tongue Twister which are also great.

California's Los Lobos are the reigning kings of Tex-Mex/Rock Espanol. But this debut CD by the San Angelo, Texas band Los Lonely Boys might herald a changing of the guard. This is truly a band of brothers, led by guitarist/vocalist Henry Garza and his younger, bass-and-drum-playing siblings Jojo and Ringo (no kidding). Like a lot of groups, they had to move away to achieve fame--in their case, to Nashville. But after the release of their EP, Willie Nelson heard them, put them on tour as his opening act, and recorded them at his studio--and the rest may be history. Stylistically, the Garza brothers' bilingual songs about love and life combine Stevie Ray Vaughan blues, Santana-style guitar licks and R&B. Nelson helps out on guitar, with Reese Wynans on keyboards. Produced by Keb Mo and B.B. King producer John Porter, the music is honest, driving, and down home, especially on the organ-filled uptempo tracks "Senorita" and "Tell My Why." The stinging guitar solo on the Afro-anthemic "Onda" recalls the '70s grooves Santana built his chops on, while "The Answer" and "More than Love" are raw power ballads that show off this group's dynamism and diversity. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

2 out of 5 stars Taco Bell all the way..........2004-12-23

Somehow my previous review of this facile cd has dropped off the screen. Since I feel so strongly about it, I have rewritten this (its all just a joke doncha get it?)I glanced at the reviews and this album scored as high as it did because that is the state of pop music today. Welcome to the Britanny (sp)nation...Really this music lacks any depth, its a pale echo of Los Lobos and Santana...I like the lead guitarist tho, and I am told they are very good live...But the lyrics are banal and really most of the music is unoriginal...But you have to understand I also believe Garth Brooks and Shannia Twain (whatever her name is) were the logical extension of the Nashville country music machine and as the result of their mass popularity, we have disco pop computer non melodic airwave crap that is dominated by image and lack of substance..but you know to each their own..its all relative...my opinion is no better than anyone elses...So in my opinion, if you really wanna hear what this music should be all about listen to Los Lobos' cuts "One time, One night" or Don't Worry Baby"....or check out Lila Downs... Yeah, I love Willie Nelson too...but clearly everyone needs to make a buck...have at it...But if you could just return CDs because you don't like them...this would be at the top of my list.Taco Bell here we come..yes I'll have the fajita in the tortilla, extra velveta please...

I had lost hope. A music lover, I bought on average one new album every week, wishing that it will be the One.

A decade passed. Then Los Lonely Boys came along. WOW...

I am hooked, my wife is hooked, my kids too.

      Thank you LLB.

They are the best thing that happened to rock n'roll since...I can't even remember.

I just hope that they will keep producing good music.

      Keep bringing us joy.

      5 out of 5 stars Smoking Hot!!!.......2004-06-25

I haven't heard music this good for a while. Every single track on this CD is awesome, which is rare for new bands these days. Vocals, guitar, bass, and percussions are solid, these guys can really play, unlike most of todays bands. I've travelled 5 straight hours listening to just this one CD and never got tired of it. In fact I'm listening to it right at this moment. Thinking of buying CD's, put this on your list. Can't wait till the next album comes out.

5 out of 5 stars Los Lonely Boys - The Real Deal.......2004-06-24

I just got back from seeing los lonely boys live for the first time (first, because I will definitely see them at every possble opportunity in the future.) Despite being relatively new and having little material to their catalogue, they put on quite an impressive show. MASSIVE jamming, I haven't seen amazing guitar like that since I saw the Crossroads Guitar Festival a few weeks ago, but that's another story. First of all, these guys are amazing, one day I'll be saying "yeah I saw the Los Lonely Boys for free in Dallas before they ever made it big." The first power trio was Cream, and these guys do great honor to the power trio tradition (underscore POWER!) The drums and bass are very good, but I am enthralled by the guitar capability of Henry Garza, this guy truly shreds the guitar with amazing capability. He was doing wah wah like I've only heard on Clapton albums and much more! At one point the bassist and lead guitarist were playing their instruments with one hand and changing chords by dropping or pulling the guitar up/down to change notes. They were showing off their musicianship and it was great. Henry even brought out a harmonica and was showing some mad skills. I bought the CD after seeing someone on audioscrobbler who liked the Jayhawks play their music alot so I checked them out at the music store and really enjoyed their CD and the single heaven. Now that I have seen them live, and heard Onda live with ~2 min. guitar solo intro to the song, I know that these guys will be around for a long time. One thing that always distinguished the really greats- Clapton, Santana, SRV for example- was the ability to create amazing catchy riffs and powerful songs that caught people's attention and drew them to the rest of their blues/rock output. "Heaven" is like that, it has an amazing riff that will draw people to an amazing musical talent. Quite refreshing!

5 out of 5 stars my all time favorite.......2004-06-23

i am not exaggerating - these guys are my all time favorite music. i am 45 years old and love all kinds of music. this is the best! i am in love with this amazingly talented band. every song..................this is it!

Just picked it up and I'm greatly enjoying it. (Thanks for the recommendation Amazon!)

That said, I'm a little displeased with the above Amazon review, as the variety is what makes this CD stand out. Jackson can play ballads, up-tempo, classic jazz, or smooth jazz. Enjoyed the cover of "Rock Steady" -- one of my favorite tunes.

I'm glad I was exposed to this tremendous artist. He's very skilled and listenable! I look forward to purchasing more of his music.

Hey, I happen to like a variety of styles, especially when masterfully played. Paul Jackson jr is a musician's musician which is probably why so many folks nab him in the studio to add just the right touch to their tracks. He comes from the 'less is more' school of guitar playing which leaves me wanting more not less. If variety is the spice of life then this album has plenty of life about it whether you like the soulful re-workings of "Rock Steady" and "Inner city blues" or the gospel tinged "you always satisfy" featuring the incredible range of Deniece Williams. Using both electric and acoustic leads, Paul succeeds where many fail in his ability to keep the groove going while switching effortlessly from style to style - he remains one of the premier jazz/ r&b guitarists of our time.
Other standout tracks for me: "On Eagles Wings" and "Pour Noelle" but it's all good!

      3 out of 5 stars I like it, But!!!.......2002-01-04

Paul Jackson is a wonderful guitatist. However, Paul has become a victim of the smooth jazz slide toward electronic drums and bass. The drums sound tinny and the bass makes no contribution. Paul has a nice voice, but he trys to hip-hop it. I know the trend in smooth jazz is toward R&B cross-over and I hate it. Money talks I guess. I loved Denise Williams on "You Always Satisfy". I also liked "Rock Steady" from a 'just jamming' perspective, but it wasn't earth shattering. As Doc Powell put it, "don't let the smooth jazz fool you". I will continue to listen to this CD, but I pray that REAL smooth jazz comes back.(with real instruments)

      5 out of 5 stars Excellente!.......2001-09-18

This is the first CD that I've purchased in quite a while and I must say it was a brilliant and superb choice. Although I was utterly and unpleasently surprised to see it featured in the BMG Jazz Club in such a brisk manner. Undoubtedly my choice of music is highly eclectic as I enjoy such artists as George Benson, Richard Eliott, Art Porter (#1-RIP), Najee, Pamela Williams, Joseph Vincelli, Gerald Albright, Hiroshima, Paul Taylor, Norman Brown, George Howard and so,so,so many countless others. I must say that Paul Jackson rates up there with the best. I highly recommmend this album to any Jazz afficionado. You will not be disappointed.

P.S. Go KXCR 89.5! Keep pumping out the Great Programming!

      3 out of 5 stars Disappointing :(.......2001-08-07

I have almost everything Paul Jackson has released solo, and many of the albums on which he has played, as special guest (impossible to have them all, they're too numerous). This new album was a must for me, especially since "Never alone" is already five years old.

This album happens to be disappointing. The reason is that I don't really feel the energy former albums have. Too many tracks are too woolly and uninnovative. Of course, Paul Jackson still is Paul Jackson. A maestro ! But what can you say about tracks such as "For Noelle" or the closing Waltz ? The cover versions (I don't know why there seems to be this trend in the smooth jazz world to NECESSARILY make two cover versions per release...) aren't that great. "Rock steady" is somewhat flavourless when compared to the original version, and "Inner City Blues" has been played by too many people (from different genres) to add something special or new here. Good for a jam in a club, but not here ! Doc Powell made a much better version on his first album, for instance.

The good things on this album : the opening track ("Eagle's wings") and "PJ III" (What a "progression" on this one !) are tonic and lively, "Satisfy" has Deniece Williams (Remember "Free", produced by Maurice White, or the poppy "Let's hear it for the boy", produced by George Duke ?) singing fabulously, "You don't have to tell her" is a great track (vocals and ambiance remind me of Stephen Simmonds and Frank Mc Comb).

Overall, the album is uneven and too "pasty". I don't know what is really going on with smooth jazz. Maybe I have become too demanding, maybe everybody is sounding the same, or the genre has reached its limits. The music is not tonic as it was up to four-five years ago and it has become very much a "middle of the road " thing, if you see what I mean. Maybe it's a record company thing, reluctant to take any risks with music. Well, we'll just have to wait for P.J.'s next album because he is capable of MUCH MUCH better...
