Appearing on two concept projects that had him playing with well-known labelmates (Heads Up Super Band) and a slew of great South African musicians (Smooth Africa) must have taught keyboardist Joe McBride that he could accomplish magical things with his own band. Texas Rhythm Club proves him right. Its title track features a typically overjoyed McBride. He enhances the playful, bouncy rhythm and loose, jumpy piano melody with a bluesy organ flavor and splashes of live horns (trumpeter Rodney Booth and trombonist Greg Waits) and the occasional crackling guitar lick (Todd Parsnow) and sax line (Wayne DeLano). Other tunes, such as "White Rock," perfectly combine McBride's sense of graceful balladry with a simmering groove that eventually explodes into harder-edged funk.

The Lone Star-oriented titles are as much fun as the tunes they belong to. "Texas Twister" promises--and delivers--a piano line that swings and sways and bounces along over a darker-toned synth line, as if a growing storm were dancing above ominous clouds. "Lone Star Boogie" is a feisty swing-along featuring McBride sporting a Hammond B-3 sound. "Texas Blues Cruise" takes this vibe to the extreme and features McBride's gritty vocal narrative, broken up by DeLano's punchy sax accents. "Everything Remains the Same" is more typical of McBride's romantic vocal style, very much in line with the smooth harmonies of Take 6. McBride's always been a pleasure, but playing with his home crew loosens him up to create his best overall recording to date. --Jonathan Widran

5 out of 5 stars Keeps Getting Better.......2004-01-23

I have most of Joe Mcbride's other CDs and this is my favorite. The songs are all smooth with that good rhythm which make them so refreshing. All the songs on this cd are great and make it Joe Mcbride's best ever.

Don't let me scratch this cd ! Ya know, I'm always scrathing cd's! God forbid it be in the twilight hours when all the music stores are closed! I have to have Keepin It Real...since the first time I heard it and I thought I just liked it. But later...
when I closed my eyes late at nite after a hard day at the law office with a tight schedule that didn't loosen up all day....I heard that new, now familiar, tune - Keepin It Real - and I pulled up the covers and drifted off relaxed and loose into dreamland. ok, so next morning when I arose and my mind and heart were searching for a melody, I hit track 5 and listened to "His Name" to start my day off right. Can't nobody take away the way I step into the day with style and go out with a smile.

5 out of 5 stars Keepin' It Real.......2003-01-15

This is one of, if not the best rendition of the Sopranos theme. Outstanding keyboard work throughout! After listening to this CD several times, the songs only get better. My favorites along with the Sopranos theme are, "Never Let You Go" (this has a George Benson flavor-very nice), "Keepin It
Real" and "Kickin It". "When you Smile" is simply a beautiful song, and the piano work along with the soprano sax work is simply masterful and extremely melodic. This is a definitive step up from "Keys To Your Heart".

4 out of 5 stars Sopranos instrumental better than original........2002-12-11

The sound is great. The songs are OK. I wish he would come out with more.

4 out of 5 stars Joe Is Really Good!!!.......2005-12-27

Their isn't a bad song on this CD. Joe is really good!!! He remains virtually unknown except to those who listen to this genre of music. He reminds me of George Duke with good vocals and great playing. I can't understand why he isn't more popular??? I own 2 of his CD's and plan to buy more. This is a good starting place for those who haven't heard him. Thanks Joe!!!

5 out of 5 stars Joe is kickin'.......2000-08-02

One of the best pianists I have heard in a long time for in the smooth jazz vein. It is very evident this chap has been schooled by the likes of Oscar Peterson, Herbie Hancock and other jazz greats. Not to take anything away from his vocal chops, this artist is someone that everyone needs to check out. This is a GREAT album and one of this years best that I purchased.

5 out of 5 stars "Great CD".......2000-07-06

I just recently jumped on the Joe McBride bandwagon after seeing him in a live venue. He does not disappoint on this CD. His vocals are always great and the music speaks for itself. I am not a Texas fan but I could be persuaded after listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Yet.......2000-07-05

This is Mc Bride as his best. The Texas Based Band is TOP NOTCH. Great enthusiam, great variety, more talent than I've heard on one CD in my lifetime; it's the baddest.
