Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:
A Great British collection.......2005-10-05
This CD features several particular composers who have written pieces of music that are quintessentially British: Jeremiah Clarke, George Frideric Handel, John Stanley, John Eccles, Henry Purcell, William Corbett, Edward Elgar, Arthur Sullivan, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst and Thomas Arne. The pieces here are triumphant, celebrating that particular period of Empire when the British ruled vastly such that the sun never set upon it - one of the key elements of such triumphant music-making, particularly for the time, was the use of brass and trumpet. Some of the later composers included here draw on inspirations from these earlier times.
One of the featured performers on this collection is John Wallace, who was principal trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra since the 1970s; he founded the brass ensemble, the Wallace Collection, ten years later in 1986. In 2002, he became principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Wallace Collection gave their last performance shortly thereafter. However, the Wallace Collection lives on in performances on CD such as this one, performed with William Boughton and the English String Orchestra. Other tracks are performed by Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Alexander Faris and the English String Orchestra conducted by Stephen Darlington.
Pieces here are very familiar to anyone with an interested in British national composition -- pieces such as the Water Music by Handel are very famous, as are Holst's 'Planets' and Sullivan's (of Gilbert & Sullivan) 'Pinafore'; other pieces, such as Clarke's 'Trumpet Voluntary', are similarly famous even if their composers did not achieve the 'brand recognition' that Handel did. All of the composers here came from the period spanning the late 1600s to the late 1700s, when music was as often written for music halls and public performances as it was for royal events and commissions.
The performances here are uniformly upbeat and well played, with little by way of blemish save the occasional drop and surge in levels (as often becomes the case when recording music with sharp brass elements).
One can envision theatres full of people waving Union Jacks while this plays, and many of the pieces have a quality about them that speaks directly to the time and place of Britain.
If you like Baroque music, buy it; it is excellent.......2005-06-29
If you like Baroque music, buy this 2 CD's BOX SET; it is excellent. Clarke, Handel, Purcell, Corbet and so on are very well played. The orchestration is very good, the quality of recording is excellent. Remember that Baroque music uses mainly a single trumpet, few other brass instruments, some woodwinds and very few drums. It is very easy, elegant and pleasant to listen. When I got married in 2003, I have chosen only Baroque music for the ceremony and the banquet because Baroque music is so lovely, so delicate and so sweet. Even if you have never heard or you think that you have never heard Baroque music, buy this CD; I tell you, you will not regret your choice because it is really an excellent CD. You have my words.

Same duo, quite different albums from mid-60's..........2005-05-04
I'm a big fan of Jim and Jean's "Changes" LP, which offered some Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan songs in higher-quality vocals than the composers themselves could manage. I don't find "People World" to be nearly as interesting, but others might like it better than "Changes". To me, "People World" has a psychedelic rock aura which no longer appeals to my tastes. The more folky harmonies on "Changes" hold up better, to my ears. Jim and Jean were capable of near-perfection some of the time, especially with, as an earlier reviewer notes, "The Bells" and "Crucifixion." Jim Glover is still actively singing in and around Sarasota, Florida, and even put out a CD last year which had some strong liberal political protest, some humor, and a couple of sweet new songs on it. If you recall this duo from their few years in the limelight of the mid-60's, this CD will bring back memories of a vital time in American music.
Much better than most of what has come done from those days.......2005-04-27
I have posted a number of pages about Jim & Jean on my web site, and in fact, feel partially responsible for the existence of this CD. I pushed both the compiler and Collector's Choice. And it was worth it. I have heard from many J&J fans through my site, all of whom were eager to see this release. I, however, came to Jim & Jean though their folky first LP, which I wish was represented on this collection. But oh well, it is a mighty good trip back in time.
Jim Glover and Phil Ochs were college roommates. Phil started writing songs, Jim went to New York, met and married Jean, and started performing in the smoky coffee houses in the city. Their first LP, released about 1965, was all covers, including a sensational performance of Phil's setting of Poe's The Bells. But Jim wrote more, and they became more political and more strident. Unfortunately, the folk scene was fading, and though they released two fine LPs in a rock/folk sort of way, they never managed to capture an audience, and faded away. But left this work behind.
Much of the 60s music being played today seems to be for people refusing to grow up and leave their childhoods behind. But this music was unknown to me when I first heard it, so it is not nostalgia that makes me like it. It is quite good. Not all of it. But much of it. The lyrics are sometimes clouded by a bit of smoke, the political sentiments sound as out-of-date as an Edison 78, and the earnest and self-important poutiness is more than I can bear. But as mid-60s pop/folk music, this is quite listenable.
Crucifixion was their most well-known song back then, and justifiably so. The lyrics are powerful and poetic, the performance strong and convincing. Jim plays and sings as if this matters. But other treasures are all over. Flower Lady, Get Out of My Mind, and a compelling version of Dylan's Lay Down Your Weary Tune are all strong. Success could have been a hit for The Monkees; snappy, well-written, with a delightful arrangement, it captures its time and place and sentiment perfectly. And several others make the cut as songs that still bear listening nearly 40 years later.

So Bad It's Good.......2006-04-12
This is what happens when you set out to write the worst song imaginable. An opera singer rapping about cowboy life and philosophy, accompanied by children singing about holidays and shopping at Walmart. Not to mention the atonal intervals rendered in tuba, bagpipe and accordian, all set to the drumbeat of a cheap synthesizer probably purchased at a drug store. Variations are then repeated for about 20 minutes. This is the song to exact revenge upon noisy neighbors with. Set it on your stereo at 4AM, crank the volume to 10, and then leave the house. This is the nuclear option of stereo wars.
Fun concept taken to provocative extremes.......2005-11-22
The most-wanted song is deliberately vanilla, while the least-wanted song is taken to silly, fascinating extremes. This CD says volumes about society's love affair with familiar, inoffensive music and naked hatred of anything that "shaves against the grain."
Yup, it's weird........2004-06-22
I bought this CD because I'd enjoyed David Soldier's work with the Thai Elephant Orchestra, and because I found the concept amusing. The scientific credibility of the study is questionable, but hey, it's a joke.
"The Most Wanted Song" ("a musical work that will be unavoidably and uncontrollably 'liked' by 72 ± 12% of listeners") is a tongue-in-cheek parody of bland, schlocky, inoffensive pop love songs at their worst. Aside from the somewhat eccentric lyrics ("maybe she likes reading Wittgenstein"), I can actually imagine this getting regular airplay on easy listening stations. It's spectacularly insipid, and it WILL get stuck in your head.
But "The Most Unwanted Song" ("fewer than 200 individuals of the world's total population will enjoy this") is where the real fun is. It's a 22-minute cacophony of abruptly changing tempos, bizarre stylistic juxtapositions, passages full of blaring atonal bagpipes, Casio keyboard beats, children singing about holidays and Wal-Mart, and, yes, an opera singer rapping about cowboy life and philosophy. In short, it's carefully calculated to be as annoying and obnoxious as possible. You'll be cringing the whole way through, but you'll be laughing too.
Like Soldier's Thai Elephant Orchestra project, this CD is basically a novelty album - one that you'll listen to every six months or so, or when you want to irritate/entertain your friends. For that, it's worth it.
Worth it (probably only for those interested in the concept).......2002-11-17
This CD is based on a survey of people's musical preferences for instruments, styles, subjects, lengths, and singers (the idea came from a similar study for art). When the results were in, they created one song that combines most of the highly favored elements, and one that's an arrangement of the least liked stuff. Perhaps this was done to show that you can't go by the numbers, because the "most wanted song" is really not too great, but the "most unwanted song" is a treat to listen to. In addition to some interesting (and sometimes discordant) combinations of instruments, such elements were thrown in as an operatic soprano rapping about cowboy life, children singing about holidays and plugging Wal-Mart, and a political activist shouting through a megaphone to the sounds of elevator music. It's not something to play on a daily basis or as background, but to be listened to carefully. For best results, the listener should take a look at the numbers; he or she will probably enjoy seeing the disliked items coming up. It's also a fun piece to play for other people, but not if they're unlikely to pay attention (or to appreciate the concept if you don't explain it to them), because then their impression will be of a strange piece of music they don't want to hear again. I've played it a few times on my radio show (once during a telethon, yet) and it usually has a favorable reception. As long as you expect to enjoy it, you will.

Hardcore for Non Fans of the Genre.......2006-08-07
It would be a diservice to call this classic hardcore because there is more to it than that. Never really getting into the hardcore genre, I can appreciate "People's Choice" because it is eclectic and also has a sense of humor. Basically, Nomeansno sounds like Big Black sped up and amped up with unusual timing and rhythms. Some similarity to the Dead Kennedys but instead of social commentary you get a hilarious misanthropy ("Dad" sounds like G.G. Allin if he actually could write a song). Anyway, this compilation is the only way to hear Nomeansno's early years (what is considered their classic period) as the albums themselves have lapsed out of print. Hopefully, that will change.
please tell me you guys ain't done.......2005-08-17
no reason for 5 stars, but have to pick something, and legends can ride on name alone. but let's go already, it's been five long years...
yep, yep, YEP!.......2004-06-09
This is my first and only nomeansno cd(just bought it a few days ago...) but i gotta say...it is amazing. Cd provides the perfect diversity that you need in an album to keep you from getting bored. From the awkward body bag to the amazing, rockin' punk of teresa give me that knife and dad, this cd just kicks ass. Absolutely fulfilling. :)
Should you buy it when you have all the songs on other CDs?.......2004-05-24
The remastering on this disc, I think, makes it worth buying even if you have every other NoMeansNo disc; the sound quality on the earlier songs is very very GOOD, a vast improvement on (I think) the previously released CD "originals" off YOU KILL ME, SEX MAD and SMALL PARTS (really only four songs). There really aren't many other reasons to buy this if you have the original releases, other than the very cute cover (a pic, not currently shown on this site, of actual, I guess, club wall graffiti reading "How f-n' (misspelled) old are NoMeansNo? Give it up, Grandads!," to which John Wright has replied "That's Great GrandDad to you..."). I mean, there are amusing liner notes, I suppose. I'm glad I bought it, no less -- it sounds great, and the songs sound good next to each other. Of course there are gripes: I, for one, wish "Theresa give me that knife" weren't on it, a song I've never liked, and would have liked to see more rarities on it, like the excellent and fun "Ya Little Creep," say, or other rarities ("Lifelike," say, which I always thought a great departure for the band and not available on CD) or some live versions of tracks otherwise unavailable. Even a few o' my faves aren't represented ("The Tower," "Joyful Reunion," "My Politics" -- they're not even on the list in the bands recent live shows). But the songs mostly are the ones you'd expect, and a couple of the surprises ("Give me the Push?") really work. The live-on-the-radio version of "The River" (which I believe is the one off the IN THE FISHTANK disc and the only semi-rarity you can find here) is great, too and has prompted them to put the song back in their live setlist, which is also good. But should you buy it if you have every other disc already? This is the question; I'm glad I did, but you gotta make up your own mind. Of course, if you DON'T have every other disc already... By the way, John Wright has grown a mustache, and I actually think it looks kinda cool. See them live: rate the 'stache.
Best of...........2004-04-07
This may not be an album for Nomeansno fans because, chances are you have everything they have done up to this point. However, this album is highly recommended for those who want a good overview of one of Canada's greatest, longest running and darkest punk rock acts. The amount of diversity found in their music is enough to keep most people coming back for more. Some of the highlights on this best of include; Theresa, Give Me that Knife, Victory, The River, It’s Catching Up and Rags ‘n’ Bones. It’s Catching Up and Rags ‘n’ Bones are off the album ‘Wrong’ which happens to be one of their best albums. I have only seen the promo, so I have no idea how this album is packaged.
