In the liner notes to Palmas, New York salsa star Eddie Palmieri complains that most Latin-jazz fusions lean too far in one direction or another. Either the jazz horn soloist stands alone like a singer, a mere adjunct to a hot Latin dance band, or else a Latin percussionist is added on like a fifth wheel to a self-contained jazz combo. Palmieri wanted to achieve a more even blend of sounds, and here he has done just that. First, he got rid of the singers and made this an all-instrumental recording, with three jazz horn players seizing the space usually occupied by the vocalist. Second, he hired three American jazzmen--Donald Harrison, Brian Lynch, and Conrad Herwig--who were able to solo on rhythm patterns as well as chord changes. Third, he balanced the horns with four top percussionists--Richie Flores, Anthony Carrillo, Jose Claussell, and Robbie Ameen--who refuse to compromise on the dense, intricate beats of Afro-Cuban traditions. Forming the fulcrum between these two sides is Palmieri himself, who not only wrote and produced the seven tracks but also ties them together with the piano, which, in his hands, is as much a percussion instrument as a melodic one. --Geoffrey Himes

This collection includes Ernesto Lecuona's complete 1954 recordings plus a series of 78s made in 1927-28. Ten of the recordings were previously unreleased. This is a lot of lightweight Cuban piano music to deal with at once, but it's definitely worth doing. Lecuona's music, which is having a major revival, may not be important. But it's consistently charming and entertaining. The 78s, which sound surprisingly good, reveal even more of a virtuoso than do the later recordings, but throughout we hear playing that expresses the spirit of the music extremely well. And yes, the famous Malagueña is here, sounding very sexy. --Leslie Gerber

Oh Boy! What can I tell you about this magnificent collection of musical jewels from our Maestro Lecuona. I bought the original Long Playing Record back in the 50's in my country.
I purchased it again shortly after my arrival to the US, and I was lucky enough to buy it on DVD from Amazon, once I found out they had it.

In my opinion this is one of the best CD's from Lacuona, Most of his piano compositions are recorded here (original ones), What, Ms. Leslie Gerber forgot to mention is that Mr.Lecuona was a band leader,"Lecuona and the Cuban Boys", remembers him? Or maybe she does not have sufficient information about him. The music from Lecuona still is very well alive today. I came across his recordings on my own, no one ever told me about this great pianist. I happened to hear the Malague?a by another great Cuban composer and band leader Perez Prado (The Real Mambo King) in one of his albums and Lecuona was the author. That got me interested in him. I'm pretty sure that Ms.Leslie Gerber does not mean any harm trying to put this composer down. It's just that maybe all she knows is Gerber baby food stuff!

What a great album and great value. There is music here that will make you smile, break your heart, inspire you, and Lecuona's skill is breathtaking. If you enjoy classical piano music (with a Cuban/Spanish influence), you'll love this. No, it doesn't display the virtuosity, complexity or seriousness of Lizst, Chopin or Beethoven, but it's fun, beautiful, dramatic yet accessible. You'll love it.

I feel compelled to identify myself first. I am Cuban born who arrived in the US in 1960 at the age of 16 years old. I am a US citizen since 1965 and a US Army Veteran of Viet Nam. I will die defending the right Ms. Leslie Garber has of expresing her opinions. But what I will not condone is her ignorance. To say that Lecuona writes "lightweight Cuban piano music" and that "Lecuona's music may not be important" is to show ignorance. A musician that composes GREAT music in several genres of the music world, a musician that in all genres has highly succesful pieces, and, a musician that after many years, (70-80 years) is still heard and admired can not be called other than MUSICAL GENIOUS and a CLASSICAL MUSICIAN. His music is so beautiful that it will live forever. From his Afro-Cuban compositions, to his romantic popular boleros, to his valses, to his Zarzuelas, Lecuona demonstrates once and again, time after time his immense musical talent. His Afro-Cuban "Cafetal", his romantic boleros "Noche Azul" and "Amapola", His vibrant and colorful "Comparsa" and "Andalucia", his classical Valses, just to mention a few things, makes Lecuona to stand together with the great musicians of the world. The fact that Hollywood made a film around "Estas en mi corazon" and that great singers, like Placido Domingo, want to sing Lecuona's music speaks immensely well of Lecuona/s greatness. The fact the popular instrumental orchestras like Faith, Conniff, Mantovani, Cugat have arranged and interpreted a lot of Lecuona's music also says a lot about Lecuona's versatility in his work. Lecuona is probably important to many millions of people and his music is certainly not lightweight. And if the only thing Ms. Garber can say about "Malaguena" is that "it sounds very sexy" is to demonstrate that she does not know a thing about music. It definitely does not give her the priviledge of commenting about Lecuona's music.

Lecuona is one of the most important composers of Latin-America. He is by no means the "unimportant" and "lightweight" Leslie Gerber (whomever that may be) claims, having been hailed for performances of his earlier (and "less mature") works by the likes of Maurice Ravel.

In my opinion the highlight of the set is the devilish "La 32". It's also interesting to compare his interpretations of the same works at different times in his career, like the two recordings of "Por que te vas?" and "Amorosa", especially keeping in mind that Lecuona seldom notated and improvised quite frequently, leaving the transcription work to his students.

She is going to great heights! watch out azucar moreno, Ma Isabel is gonna give ya a good run for your money. Totally enchanting, entertaining and every track/song a gem. I saw(Ma Isabel) this tiny stick of dynamite on spanish speaking television and was completely enamored with this charming, abundantly talented and witty little gurl from the south of SPAIN. I bought her CD without a doubt that I would hear some amazing music, boy was I correct! This is not your average disposable dance pop. Really well produced. Wonderfull flamenco flavorings through out. The title track is beyond catchy and great to dance to! The two remixes are tremendous. The DVD that comes with the music is just too adorable. This little gurl has stolen my heart! She has inspired me to *try to have as much ZEST for life as she does. Its no wonder she won hands down at the Junior's last year. This little DIVA delivers! /? OK, there are a lot of great characters in French music (Goldman, Cabrel...), but this guy is great! An amazing album, with strong lyrics, rythm, a guitare you will never forget... Songs as "Sans recours", "Sur la route", or "Si j'étais vous vous" are simply great, the rest of the album is also very good. And there is a new version of Mickeal Jackson's "Black or white", with simply two guitars and a drum that is unbelievable. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

I generally don't listen to country music, but this French version of it is amusing and entertaining. Some of his other CDs have more of a rock feel but I would call this one country.

I took one star away because I was dissappointed with song #2 (J'en reve encore). I love the moody riff at the beginning and I think this song really had potential to be great, but de Palmas ruins it by adding too many cheesy keyboard effects and a really boring chorus.

The catchy tunes do help you learn French, and de Palmas is definitely talented.

Hi everyone !! Well, I'm a french girl and I love Gerald de Palmas. I love "Marcher dans le sable" it's a wonderful album ! My favorite song of this album is "Déjà" All these songs are talking about love but when a couple doesn't work !! And I love those stories !! I'm sorry for my english but I use to talk in French !! So buy this album because it's really beautiful ! Musics annd lyrics even if you don't understand french, listen it you will love it !!! And Gerald de Palmas has a beautiful voice !! So...

Yes! I wore this CD out as the DJ at French camp, although cabin cleanings were mostly reserved for Mylene Farmer (another great French singer). The songs on this CD is really good, and he's pretty cute too!D

During french camp in MI, we had to clean up our cabins every single day, and since we are not allowed to listen to american music for the "experience" of it all, we got to listen to this CD while we were cleaning. At first, we were all disheartened by the sound of French music, but after only a day or two, it became our morning routine to listen to, because it was so soothing and upbeat at the same time. there wasnt one morning when we didnt listen to this CD, and as soon as I returned from camp, it was the first thing I bought! You'll love it!

I picked up this album on a trip to Paris after hearing samples of the album on FNAC.com. It's been over a year since I took French IV and this album is one of the reasons why I have retained much of my French. DePalmas' style is adult contemporary with an occasional dash of country. He is quite popular in France (Marcher dans le sable was one of FNAC's "meilleurs ventes" for over a year) and won a French "grammy" for "J'en reve encore." "Si Tu Veux" is the easiest song to understand because of it's parallel structure, but I like most of the songs on this album (even if I don't understand every word) because they are so aesthetically pleasing! If you like soft rock (and Uncle Kracker type stuff) and are taking French, get your hands on this album.

Often these reviews are extremely silly, throwing around words like "classic," "exquisite" and "Beatle-esque" in reference to some bla bla new offering from Blink 182 or Kanye West. To me, this is a classic. While I am no certified music critic, I can attest that this CD, even after nearly ten years of wear, never goes a fortnight without play. Not only is every song unskippable, they flow together wonderfully. If you'd like a taste of the the best the album has to offer, give a listen to Comme Ca, Mary Jane, and especially Rester Calme. He is not just good for a French singer; De Palmas is world class.

I don't understand a word De Palmas sings... and I don't care.
Of all the CD's I own, their are few that I like to listen to all the songs on- except, my Gerald De Palmas CD's (there are others, but I'm not reviewing those now).

Everyone who hears Gerald says somthing like; "wow, he has a great voice!" yes, yes he does.
The dynamics on this CD have, at times sent shevers down my spine (but thats me; I am weard).

This, or any De Palmas, CD is worth a listen, and it will remind your freinds that "French" does not mean "Disco" (thank you very much Eiffel65).

De Palmas is a strong lyricist and musician. His music can be listened by all, including non-french speakers. His music is not too poppy or hard either, they're groovy and easy-listening, without being too corny. The theme song "Les lois de la nature" is awesome, and songs like "Mary Jane" are instant classics. It's really worth buying it!

I own Listen Here!, La Perfecta II, Ritmo Caliente, and Obra Maestra (plus some of his older stuff). I've followed Palmieri's trayectory throughout the years, and although each CD has its focus, if Latin-jazz is your thing, THIS is the one to own. It remains my favorite of all his CDs, and the one that gets the most play on my CD player.

Don't be expecting soft, background latin-jazz. As with anything Palmieri, you're in for gangsta salsa. Just put track #1...you're gonna be blown away. Buy it...highly recommended

Palmieri, a legendary figure in latin music, comes awful close to perfection on Palmas. It's a wondrous release filled with his trademark piano flights and exceptional ensemble performances. Even the long cuts sounds muy caliente! Worldbeat fans or people who've just started to get into latin sounds thanks to the Buena Vista Social Club experience may want this title too. It's one of those discs I put on the player in the middle of winter when I'm up to my yin-yang in snow. And again at the height of summer when the sweat drips just from sitting outside for too long. That's how powerful, lush and intense this stuff is.

This disc represents the highpoint of Eddie's latin jazz fusion. I had the good fortune to see the songs played live just before the disc was released. To my surprise, the disc was just as good as the live show. Eddie really lets his very gifted musicians stretch out for their solos. Brian Lynch, one of the greatest jazz trumpeters alive, simply scorches. This is to take nothing away from the very talented Donald Harrison on sax and Conrad Herwig on trombone. Holding down the rhythm is Jose Claussel on terrific timbales. But, as always, the guiding genius is Eddie Palmieri, the justly called Mozart of latin music. Calling Eddie a genius is an understatement, but this is one of the best from a genius.

I had the good fortune to see Eddie Palmieri live in concert, and it was one of the most memorable concerts I've ever seen. He has so much energy, as does the rest of his ensemble members, which bring the music to life. I also played a couple of tunes on this cd in my Latin combo, and Palmieri is definitely a gifted writer and musician. Any cd by him is worth the price.

One of the most dynamic Flamenco guitarists of a lifetime. This is an outstanding CD full of versatile guitar licks. Phenominal music from a world-class guitarist. The music is rich, vibrant and full of life. If you ever get a chance to see Maria 'Z' in person, do yourself a favor and go. Her live performances are awesome! As good as this CD is, her other CD "Mrs. Laughinhouse" is even more explosive.
