Late percussionist Mongo Santamaria expanded and elaborated on the Afro-Cuban hand-drum made famous by Chano Pozo. For six decades he was the conguero supreme, reintroducing the ancestral African anthems silenced by Anglo slavemasters. Those ancestral anthems are heard on this fiery 1980 live date from the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Santamaria lays down all of the dancing dimensions of the Afro-Cuban clave, with an in-the-pocket combo co-powered by drummer Steve Berrios. The folkloric program features several Santamaria standards, including "Para Ti," "Sofrito," and "Cóme Candela." The Belgian guitarist/harmonica virtuoso Toots Thielemans and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie (who featured the percussionist in his Cubop big band in the '50s) put their timeless tones on a grooving take of "Watermelon Man." With his carefully constructed cross-rhythms, Mongo Santamaria made grooves that stretched from Havana to Harlem. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Album Description
Another Canned Heat / Friday Music Remasters Series from the vaults and archives of Fito De La Parra, "Live At The Turku Rock Festival" showcases this hard-working boogie band at their peak of their post- Woodstock fame. Led by the big man Bob Hite, The Heat cook up over an hour of rock, blues, country blues and hit songs from their catalog of albums.
Recorded in Finland in 1971, the band was touring to support their worldwide hit album "Historical Figures and Ancient Heads." With a new line up featuring Joel Scott Hill, Antonio De La Bareda, along side founders Hite, De La Parra, and Henry Vestine, this band could do no wrong.
Check out the classic hit "Let's Work Together" with Hite's incredible vocals and Canned Heat's tight chemistry on stage. This band really was the consummate blues band of the era and it shows throughout this live performance.
A healthy dose of tracks from the aforementioned " Historical Figures and Ancient Heads" album are in order as " Hill's Stomp", " Long Way From L.A" and others are featured on this disc.
No Canned Heat album is complete without a boogie, and here you get "Canned Heat Boogie" This lengthy jam is seeing its first release in North America, and this rarity is just one of the many fine tunes on this fine live recording.
Remastered from the original concert tapes, this authorized edition of "Live At The Turku Rock Festival" is just the right album for your blues, rock and boogie needs....Rock On!

Back From Bluze H'ven But I Lost My Socks On The Trip!.......2007-07-03
Remember "ole Jayke" is an old time Delta Blues, Chicago Style Black Electric Blues man..it is tuff for me to get into the white bands but I for one had my socks knocked off when I listened to this cd. I was blown away by "live Heat." "The Heat" have to be one of the few "white boy bands" who can create that Chicago Sound. Heat live cook and jam better than on a studio work. "She Don't Want Me No More" sounds like a Blues festival circa 60s song...lawrdy shake your money maker! "Let's Work Together" justs jumps at you, grabs you and gets you rockin and never lets go. Start clappin your hands chillun on this song. They get into a major guitar jam....rock me baby. They immediately go into their other big Heat "On The Road Again" which is hot but they play it pretty straight but do go nuts with knock down guitar solos. "That's All Right" is like a "Wolf" song with out the growlin..dig da harmonica. "Hill Stomp" didn't do much for me...too much like ZZ Top. "From L.A." is a great 50s type dance tune..bobby socks and all. "Watch Yourself" is a typical Heat Blues tune....they work it and work it....jam city....I could see John Lee on this one .."too bad he ain't." Heat loves to boogie (Boogie With The Hook) and I think ZZ Top must have stole The Heat's Beat. In the middle of the "Boogie With The Heat" the drummer goes absolutely insane music wise and must do a mega minute drum solo...lawdry have mercy on me...these boys like to cook and boogie. Before they leave Turku, they get down and dirty on "Late Night Blues." This song would be right at home in Chicago in the 50s. Forget who is in the band....let the music move you and get you into a groove where you just zone out on some good blues. Just remember "Joliet Jayke" try's to speak from his soul to all you good blues lovers out there.
Boogie On--Canned Heat!!!.......2007-04-27
If you are looking for a great sounding live album from Canned Heat, than this is the one. This was recorded right after Blind Owl Alan Wilson passed away and the bands was starting over. They added guitarist and vocalist Joel Scott Hill to the band and this was his first concert with them. He fits right in with great vocals and guitar support to the sunflower-Henry Vestine, who is great in this set. Great guitar solos, long versions of their songs, and great vocals by the Bear-Bob Hite--despite the fact that the Blind Owl just died. The stereo on this recording is great and Hite plays a mean harp. Long versions of On the Road again sung by Hite with great guitar and some blues songs sung by Hill, who went on late to join the Flying Burrito Brothers for a few albums--if you can find his album LA Getaway I would purchase it--sounds great with LA Session players. GET THIS ALBUM FROM CANNED HEAT-GREAT SONGS-GREAT SOUND-LONG SONGS_JUST GET IT!!!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
The Isley Two-On-Ones Continue (Thank God).......2007-05-24
BGO RECORDS should be commended for reissuing those classic 70s and 80s Isley Brothers albums as two-on-one cds. The liner notes are great and the remastered sound is excellent. I'm looking forward to the next Isley two-on-one (1981's INSIDE YOU paired with 1982's THE REAL DEAL).
LIVE IT UP (1974) and THE HEAT IS ON (1975) are the Isleys at the peak of their 70s creative and commercial power. By now the Isleys have settled into a formula of funky clavinet riffs, stinging guitar solos, and smooth "sweet lady" ballads. But this formula still sounds fresh over thirty years later. Four classic top ten r&b hits ("Live It Up", "Midnight Sky", "Fight The Power" and "For The Love Of You") are here along with such quiet storm classics as "Hello It's Me" and "Make Me Say It Again Girl".
LIVE IT UP became the Isleys' first of 10 #1 r&b albums, while THE HEAT IS ON surprisingly went to #1 on the r&b AND pop charts. Hey BGO, how about pairing 1977's GO FOR YOUR GUNS with 1980's GO ALL THE WAY? Or 3+3 with HARVEST FOR THE WORLD? (Just a thought)

Customer Reviews:
I hear tell..........2006-03-13
...that 'Canned Heat Live at the Kaleidoscope 1969' has better sound quality than the 'Live at Topanga Corral' disc, although both releases are the same recordings. I can't vouch for that since I've never heard the Topanga version, but at least this time the producers got the venue right, if not the sound, so Topanga can go back to just being Cory's girlfriend on 'Boy Meets World'! What I can vouch for is that this recording is vibrant, full of electricity, and audibly square in your face, with just a few miscues (a bit of feed back and a recording crackle on 'Dust My Broom', and a fade in on the closer, 'When Things Go Wrong'). Other than that nitpicking, the tracks go like this:
'Bullfrog Blues' is an incredible wake-up call, featuring Al "Blind Owl" Wilson's unforgiving slide guitar work, with just a twist of fuzzy psychedelia added for good measure. Wilson's trademark vocal sound is the only omission on this disc, but his harp and guitar leave his imprint all over the place. Bob "The Bear" Hite's vocals are as big and bold as the man himself. The title is a bit misleading as the seven minute track is more rock/psychedelic/boogie than blues.
The eleven minute 'Sweet Sixteen' isn't Chuck Berry's 'Sweet Little Sixteen', but Riley B. King's (AKA BB) 'Sweet Sixteen'. It's eleven minutes of slow-down, traditional blues. Everyone's draggin' their feet on this one except Henry Vestine, whose lead guitar solo's are running amok over everything. 'I'd Rather Be the Devil (Than That Woman, Man)' follows, a jumpin' blues number featuring Wilson on mouth harp and more sweet Vestine leads.
A six minute workout on the oft-recorded Elmore James classic, 'Dust My Broom' is up next, a slidin' blues number where everyone boogies while Wilson's guitar runs slide on by. 'Wish You Would' chalks up some plenty fine boogie-rock (like only Canned Heat can) built on a four-second Vestine guitar hook that repeats over and over while Wilson's mouth harp flutters right on by just like a butterfly. Vestine does take one break for some smokin' lead guitar bridgework.
The set winds up with a second slow-down blues track, 'When Things Go Wrong', featuring Wilson on rhythm guitar and Vestine plugging in for some scintillating lead guitar runs.
The liner notes are brief, but we do get the original artwork that accompanied the 1970 vinyl release of the Kaleidoscope disc, as well as the cover photo used for the 'Topanga Corral' release, and Saul Davis' psychedelic poster used to advertise Canned Heat's Kaleidoscope appearances on March 22 and 23, 1968. That poster also advertised the inclusion of Fever Tree and Jefferson Airplane on the same bill. Other than that all you get is the music, which in this case is more than enough. There simply is not a loser in the bunch. My copy is up for sale, but only because it brings such a pretty penny. If the sound is improved over the 'Topanga Corral' version, I'm sure it will be worth every penny to Canned Heat aficionados. Most others will, like me, make do with a slightly inferior, but more affordable 'Topanga Corral' disc.
Topanga Coral Album - Taken From Best Sources!!!!.......2004-09-15
The "Live at The Topanga Coral" album, originally issued on a Wand label LP ( later re-issued on Pickwick LP's ) was bootlegged to death, both on LP and CD , from much inferior sources, after the Wand and Pickwick LP issues went out of circulation. All of the various bootlegs eliminated Bob Hite's on stage chatter between songs. Well here is FINALLY a re-issue of the "Live At The Topanga Coral" album, taken directly from the Mastertape, with all of Hite's chatter, and also in the correct running order ( most of the boots oddly neglected this). The liner notes, all these years later, finally admit, that due to contractural reasons, this event did not occur at "The Topanga Coral" in 1967 as everyone has been led to believe. The title of this A1 quality re-issue tells it right; "Live at the Kaleidoscope 1969". No longer be fooled by inferior imitations!!!
Good Boogie Music!.......2004-05-06
If you like Canned Heat, you will like this album of good boogie music, recorded live at the Kaleidescope 1969. Old stoned blues boogie Canned Heat. That about says it.

One of the last live recordings by three greats........2004-08-27
I won't try to convert non-Canned Heat fans, but for those who care, this the last recording by Bob Hite, the last live recording by Ronnie Barron, and one of the few live recordings by Hooker.
Don't Forget to Boogie.......2004-03-11
This was one of my best live cassettes, almost worn out to transparent. Happily enough I got the Cd.
Well, Canned Heat certainly knew how to boogie, I reckon; although we are missing the Blind Owl, the Bear was still there fronting the proceedings. The whole set is great but I prefer the boogie ones with the Chamber Brothers supplying backing vocals and The Hook himself, what can it be said, just that's too sad he just sang on three tunes. Vintage blues and boogie. Don't think twice it's alright! buy it the now.
Only the JLH songs are special.......2001-01-06
This CD is a fair representation of a live concert in the mid-seventies when JLH sat in for a few songs at the end of the night. The crowd is enthusiastic and the energy from the band is high, but the only really standout tracks are the last three, featuring John Lee Hooker. Canned Heat plays a decent back-up role to a true legend and they swing and groove and growl well enough. Nothing earth-shattering, but there are some very enjoyable moments. The best aspect of this disc is the very palpable sense of atmosphere conveyed through a pretty well recorded gig. Simple, party type blues/rock, but JLH adds some magic.

Canned Heat on fire.......2007-02-26
The music is great! Al Wilson is all over the record on harp, guitar and vocal. A really burning version of Sonny Boy's Bring it on home takes the price for best song. The quality of sound is not that great. No mastertapes were used. This is pure vinyl to CD.
