Essential funk history.......2007-06-25
Everybody knows the perennial, oft-sampled "Express Yourself." And almost everybody knows "Love Land." But Charles Wright, heading up the original funk jam band, released a whole lot more music that's worth owning. The up-tempo "One Lie (Leads to Another)" is an incredible jazzy funk workout. The anguished ballad "Tell Me What You Want Me to Do" is late 60s/early 70s soul at its most, well, souful.
This is a must for funk historians. You want old school? Try listening to the man who built the building.
Express Yourself.......2007-01-29
That is what this CD is all about...expression. Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhytymn do not get their just deserve and they are fantastic. One of the best R&B/Soul/Funk bands of the 70's. Thank you to the band for their contribution to my cd collection.
DEFINITELY A MUST HAVE, MAN!!!!!.......2007-01-25
look here, i knew that there was more to this band than EXPRESS YOURSELF. this cd more than satisfied that. everything on here bumps. i can do without the slow stuff, but overall, mr. wright and company DID THEY THANG!!!!! UHHHHH!!!! i love charles' voice; especially on YOUR LOVE (MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME). that stands out because it sounds like his voice was all shot and he still found something in it to deliver. if you like true blue funkiness, then get this. it is cats and bands like this that never get played on the radio, which sucks, that really bring that sausage gravy vibe. you will understand that latter once you cop this or download it.
Essential soul.......2005-02-05
This is it, the music that set the stage for Parliament, the Bar-Kays, and all the other funk and groove bands that broke out in the 70s. If you've ever heard God on the One, thank James Brown, Funkadelic, Herbie Hancock, and these guys.
From 1967 until 1973, Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band made socially conscious, dangerously infectious music that would provide inspiration for future generations of soul bands and DJs. This compilation starts out with the still-fresh "Express Yourself", weaves through a litany of hooks, riffs and beats, and slows down only for a couple of tasteful ballads. Despite the fact that I've memorized nearly every track, this CD still finds its way into the player often, and certainly ranks as one of my all-time favorite albums.
non-stop groove-a-thon.......2003-04-09
Highest recommendation. If you are a fan of of soul and the history of funk, then you have to go back to a source like Charles Wright. This album is sequenced nicely and hangs together perfectly, despite the tracks being from different eras (and different bands) in Wright's career. The title track alone makes this CD worth purchasing, with "Express Yourself" being one of those rare tunes that can hold up to repetition ad nauseum (it's been in Burger King commercials, et al) and I have to say, it's still a foot tapper every time those opening notes hit my speakers. The rest of the album alternates between lulling you with it's hypnotic grooves (In the Jungle), giving you a soul power work out (65 Bars...) and straight ahead clipped guitar pre-funk (90 Day Cycle People) making this one of those greatest hits CD's you don't just buy for one song, with the rest filler. Give it a try for a dash o' soul.

Infinite stars!!!!!.......2005-06-24
This is album is so incredible. I found it on cassette years ago. wore it out till the pad inside fell off, then carefully put the tape into another casing...then lucked out and found a mint condition promo vinyl copy..only played it some to keep it mint..now it's on cd and it sounds wonderful!! Collectables is IT! Beautiful, full, warm, fat, analog sound. They just do a great, straight transfer without any meddling with the eq,etc. WHICH IS WHAT ALL LABELS SHOULD DO IF THEY HAD ANY RESPECT FOR THE MUSIC AND PEOPLE WHO MADE IT. Anyhow, without ranting too much about that. PICK THIS UP IF YOU LOVE 60'S SOUL/FUNK/R&B!!!! You won't be disappointed, i guarantee it!!

Customer Reviews:
Two Albums, One Cd From Watts' Funk Soul Brothers.......2006-06-10
And as my title intends to communicate to anyone who's interested, Warner Bros.' superb remaster of two Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band gems - "In The Jungle, Babe," was first released in 1969, and the better known "Express Yourself" (the title track was a national smash hit) followed in 1970 - is the way to hear these underrated gems. I emphasise the twofer because it's still available, and at a low price, despite the fact that Collectables has more recently released each title individually. But true to form, Collectables' packages are relatively shabby - the front cover, an unappetizing coupon on the back of the 'booklets' you can send away should you want the label's catalog. No liner notes, annotation, nothing. Warners provides the background scoop on Wright and his very accomplished band and the titles at hand, which were issued at the group's popular - and arguably, creative - peak, some nice graphics and photos, and a sonically superior remaster. The Wright band was a seminal funk and soul outfit, actively making albums (and a few hits) from 1967 - 1975.
Charles Wright had been active in the music industry since the late doo-wop era, when an encounter with Jesse Belvin opened doors to his early songwriting and session work. At first, the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band seems rather like a looser cousin to Sly & The Family Stone, without Sly's songwriting and production genius. And it is true, there's no "Family Affair" or "Everybody Is A Star" herein, but really, no one has reached those astonishing heights. These guys have a loose-limbed, relaxed style all their own, with funk tracks seemingly coming together effortlessly, thanks no doubt to the high level of superfine musicianship, and soul aplenty; their best work is rhythmically compelling, full of infectious riffs and deep grooves. There is the occasional less-than-essential cover version, but overall these albums - like the group's catalog in general - make for highly enjoyable listening and will likely inspire those so inclined to get up and dance around the room. Warners still has a very good compilation of their work in print, but this deeper look at the group's music is not likely to be around forever.
In the past couple of years Water Music has reissued some of the other Warners albums (as has Collectables, in a less coherent fashion). I'd still petition for a reissue of Wright's last Warners album,"Rhythm & Poetry" (1972). I had a copy on vinyl once, but it has inexplicably disappeared! In the mean time, I'll content myself with what's here and available now, and pass it on to anyone who will listen.

Album Description
This is first time on CD for this 1971 Warner Bros. soul classic. Steeped in call-and-response revivalism, this album brings the funk and kicks off this amazing lost album by one of the great funk bands of the '60s and '70s. Water. 2006.
