Amazon.com's Best of 1998

James Brown had just recorded "Say It Loud--I'm Black and I'm Proud" when he visited Dallas in summer 1968. Mixing Soul Brother Number One's more traditional gospel- and jump-blues-influenced early hits with the funk he was still developing ("Cold Sweat," "Licking Stick--Licking Stick"), Say It Live and Loud captures that show in a time-capsule piece that's hardly just a historical document: it brings the full-force power of Brown, Maceo Parker, and the rest of the "James Brown Orchestra" front and center. --Rickey Wright

James Brown had just recorded "Say It Loud--I'm Black and I'm Proud," the anthem that would become his last pop-chart top 10 entry for nearly two decades, when he visited Dallas on a summer 1968 leg of his then-ongoing tour. Mixing Soul Brother Number One's more traditional gospel- and jump-blues-influenced early hits with the funk he was still developing ("Cold Sweat," "Licking Stick--Licking Stick"), Say It Loud and Live captures that show in a time-capsule piece that's hardly just a historical document: it brings the full-force power of Brown, Maceo Parker, and the rest of the "James Brown Orchestra" front and center. And the memorabilia-laden CD booklet ("We know the Negro deejay won't play this record ... but every BLACK deejay will play this record!") is as essential as the music. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Tighten Up is the Track .......2007-04-18

I won't go into too much detail - overall the band plays tight and the tracks are a mix of hits and lesser knowns. I mostly want to make a plug for "Tighten Up" - that track is an expansive and vibrant piece of music and the trumpet solo is the final touch of sweetness. As has been said about music, "when it hits you feel no pain" - that's for dang sure.

4 out of 5 stars KANSAS CITY?.......2007-01-27

I'm looking for a version of Kansas City when James introduces the band.
It sounds like they hadn't been with him for awhile and he's welcoming them back. Does anyone know about this?

5 out of 5 stars WILD, WILD STUFF!! PLAY IT LIVE AND LOUD!.......2007-01-06

The classic story that most of music enthusiasts should know, was how in 1969, James Brown ditched the enormous band he had, an hour before show time, to hire some 16 year old kids with the name Collins, to replace them. Those two kids would eventually become the backbone of the band that changed the face of funk music forever, and not to mention birth hip hop.
BUT- let us never forget the band that James Brown fired (minutes before they could quit) that night, with their lead, by the name of Maceo. They appear here, and show us, quite loud and powerfully- that James Brown had already established what was the face of Funk music. And while that band that James Brown replaced them with has gone down as legends in their own right- they had nothing on this beast.
This era of the Godfather, is without a doubt his wildest and craziest era overall. Ooozing with raw energy- this live performance showcases it nice and tight in one very solid package.
James Brown wrote the tunes, orchestrated the band, and shows he's got the moves and the pipes like nobody else.. but the band itself is capable of anything, it seems. Listen to the change-ups from one song to the next. Theres no breaks anywhere. Proffesional Jazz Musicians practice this type of stuff for over thirty years- these guys were in their twenties- hitting every nail on the head. They are trained and true, and no one falls out of step, yet they suprise you at every turn. Three numbers in the middle without James Brown... still smokin'. Maceo shows us all a little thing called The Tighten Up...
One action packed scorcher of a show, fans of any type of music will likely be blown away by this disc.
God Bless The Godfather of Soul.

5 out of 5 stars Ladies and Gentlemen James Brown, JAMES BROWN!.......2006-12-08

This thing just stayed lodged in the car CD player for weeks and weeks. No reason to listen to anything else!

Powerful, funky, historic, a bundle of frenetic energy~ The thing that knocks me out about this recording besides some of the best cuts of the band of that period live is the SHOW. You get to hear the roles of the band members in the presentation that was "The James Brown Show". This was not just a singer and a band that got up there and played and entertained for a couple of hours or so. This was a multifaceted entertainment machine! Tight, slick and having a great time being the best! Do not miss an instant of this recording, even the introductions and goodbyes.

Maceo is a revelation on this recording. If you think of him as a rhythmic alto player, wait till you hear the burning tenor solo on Suds. I mean, James Brown has left the stage and the energy level gets higher!!! How can that be? Not to mention a developing front man in his own right. He is not alone, the band is great, the names that you know inventing this music right there on stage. Peewee Ellis wrote great, flexible arrangements and band turns on a dime!! James cues, the band jumps!

By the end of the CD, tempos are flyin'!! Cold sweat is waaaay fast. Not the kind of thing you record for a 45 but exactly what is needed this particular evening with this crowd. The Soulbrother #1 reads the crowd perfectly and takes them further than they expected they could go. Ya just gotta keep it goin'. Keep winding em', keep em' dancin' up and send them higher, higher higher!!!! James dancing, women screaming, Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me while I boogaloo."

This is a show!!!

5 out of 5 stars Cold Sweat.......2006-04-28

At a little under $1/minute, the Cold Sweat alone makes the 12 bucks you'll shell out for this one worth it. This might be the most insane version of this tune ever, more so than Live at the Apollo. The rhythm section is so rock-solid and funky, and you can practically visualise JB going through his dancing paces in front of a hysterical Dallas crowd. Add in all the other tunes, and its a serious bargain.

5 out of 5 stars great debut, better than "fight the tide".......2005-11-24

This CD is one of the finest big label debuts ever by a Christian rock band. Their songs are somewhat amateurly written, but they rock nonetheless. Say it Loud all y'all, Sanctus Real rocks!!!

Peace out.

4 out of 5 stars There's only one thing wrong....the lyrics.......2004-06-04

This cd deserves to be listened to: it has great, hard harmonic rock, a terrific singer, great solos, etc.; the only thing really wrong with this cd is that the lyrics are confusing, hard-to-follow, have little clarity, and don't send much of a message (with the exception of the last song and "inspiration"). I'm not saying all the songs are great, but the ones that are are at least four stars out of five. I'm also not saying that the lyrics are necessarily bad, I just have a hard time interpretting their meaning or purpose. Although, the music is really good, and you should buy the cd just for that reason. Besides, the lyrics don't by any stretch send a bad message, just a hard-to-perceive one. Well, I hope this review was helpful--good shopping.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christian lyrics and awesome music.......2004-05-28

This cd is just all around awesome, great sound and a great message. The song lyrics are deep and the music rocks, not to hard (no screaming or anything....). I have a friend who has spent some time with the guys and he says they are all solid christians who practice what they preach. Easily the best album i have ever bought. i encourage anyone to buy this cd, no matter what age, and i am looking forward to their new cd "fight the tide" coming out one june 15 2004. anybody who would give this album one star obviously has no taste in music.

1 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY!.......2004-04-13

It's been long overdue. The CD finally has arrived with the Mighty Burner "Charles Earland on the B-3 and pre Idris Muhammad "Leo Morris" on the drums. The two pieces that shine are "SnakeBone" and "Brother Soul" which were never re-recorded or done again by Lou Donaldson since he and Charles Earland parted ways.

As with 1999's Respect box, which chronicled women recording artists, Rhino again attempts to capture and condense a mighty field with the six-CD Say It Loud! And again, it largely succeeds. A companion to the VH1 series of the same name, Say It Loud! tells one story and many. It covers the development of many related genres, the business of locking many outsize talents and personalities into the grooves of records, and the music as it mirrored a rustling, ever-changing society--that last underscored by the inclusion of spoken sound bites (everyone from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Sammy Davis Jr.). But within these larger themes move many smaller but no less compelling tales. The roughly chronological programming allows for accidental, startling juxtapositions--disc one places Paul Robeson's pained, dignified reading of "Ol' Man River" just a few tracks away from bluesman Son House's insistence in "My Black Mama (Part 1)" that "there ain't no burnin' Hell." From there, pop ballads, big bands, bop, gospel, doo-wop, rock & roll, soul from Motown! Memphis! and Philly!, gorgeous civil-rights-era jazz, funk, and rap cohere and speak to one another in a selection about as good as can be expected given its length and various legal restrictions. (The most glaring omission is Stevie Wonder.) Any taint of "this stuff is good for you" is lost in the parade of great gifts, personalities, statements, dance crazes, poetry, and word games. If the above track listing contains lots of names you don't recognize, Say It Loud! will offer you a topnotch one-stop survey course. --Rickey Wright

    3 out of 5 stars a bit silly.......2005-12-05

Isn't this a bit silly? Black music is the basis for a lot, if not most, of the American music we cherish today. Limiting it to 6 CDs just seems disrespectful. It would take someone's entire collection to do justice to black music, which is American music itself, at its finest and most original.

5 out of 5 stars A History of Black Music in America.......2003-02-01

When I found this collection on Amazon.com, I nearly cried (okay, I did cry). This includes much that anyone who truly loves African American music could ever want. It's not only entertaining, it's educational. How pleased I was when it arrived that there were not only six exceptional CD's, but a beautiful book included also. Additionally, I love the excerpts of famous speeches and quotes, etc. that are included between songs. If you truly love R&B as well as it's roots, buy this compilation and be satisfied that this was money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars an absolute must have!!.......2002-08-04

To any black person who wants educate their child musically, this is a must have, yes there are some omissions, but the depth and breadth of the artists represented is astonishing. I will listen this with my child very often, as a history lesson.

    4 out of 5 stars What.....No Stevie????.......2002-02-13

Stevie Wonder has to be the epitome of stylistic uniqueness among song writers, African-American or otherwise. He is also one of the most proliferate, with a body of work that spans nearly 4 decades. The influence of his genius upon the music world is unquestionable. How, then, could this musical phenomenon been omitted from an otherwise outstanding collection?

3 out of 5 stars No James Brown???.......2002-01-18

They really have a History of Black Music Compilation and leave out James Brown? No James Brown? Uh...what's going on here? One of the most important figures in music of this century and he's excluded...for shame

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2006-06-24

A fully contemporary set for James Brown, as many of his previous albums were essentially two hit singles, A and B sides, and material from as far back as the '50s. This album has a title tune of tremendous distinction, musical value, and historical importance. It's been said that "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud" actually started out as a live instrumental piece; when it arrived as a 45rpm it changed the musical landscape and had deep societal significance. It's interesting that a few lines from the '56 "I Feel That Feeling Coming On" are incorporated - the only "look back", if you will. Other included numbers from 1968 are the Little Willie John-related hit "Let Them Talk", recorded apparently for the JB tribute l.p., but making its' debut right here. The same Musical Director of "It's a Man's...World" and so many others, Sammy Lowe, worked on this gem, which also featured the great drummer Bernard Purdie. Once again, Lowe-Brown worked some magic - you have to hear this one. James Brown does a totally incredible job on this item which was referenced on Live at the Apollo, Vol. 2 set. Surely one of the most intense, heartfelt performances of his amazing career. The song builds and builds...I'd love to hear the full-length version, if it's waiting in the wings.
"Goodbye My Love" is here, another great effort, a ballad with a connecting monologue. James' take on "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" is equally compelling in a simpler arrangement, somewhat reminiscent of Toussaint McCall's approach to "Nothing Takes The Place Of You". Not really single material, but something for the after-hours dance floor. "Lickin' Stick, Lickin' Stick" is the uptempo masterpiece, with Maceo and St. Clair. An early appearance for trombonist Fred Wesley is on the standout instrumental "I'll Lose My Mind".
An unusual beat is "I Love You" - the time signature is beyond my grasp, but this cut is infectious - with an excellent lead vocal.
[Historians and fans check out live versions of *three* of these tracks on the live (partial) namesake "Say It Loud And Live"].

If there's a downside to the proliferation of box sets and greatest-hits packages, it's that artists are often reduced to little more than their smash singles and memorable B-sides. As a chance to hear James Brown as a full-album artist, Say It Loud: I'm Black and I'm Proud is well worth owning. Recorded in 1969, at the height of Brown's powers, this does contain several known songs, chief among them the fierce title track and the sexy "Licking Stick." But listen to Brown tear into the mournful "I Guess I'll Have to Cry, Cry, Cry" or the bluesy "Let Them Talk" and you will get a true sense of the breadth of Brown's many talents. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars All Killer No Filler from Mr. James Brown.......2001-06-05

Not an album of Black Power manifestos, as the title would indicate (The Last Poets took care of that). This is a straight-up wonderful compilation of JB's best b-sides and singles from late 1967-68. Pts. 1 and 2 of the title cut (although somewhat poorly recorded) top it off. A smoking instrumental "Shades of Brown," a short version of the down home soul of "Licking Stick," The fine remake of "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye," and another instrumental "Maybe I'll Understand" make this a CD you can listen all the way thru without skipping a song. Good old down-home unadulterated soul at it's best!

5 out of 5 stars WE DIDN'T BELIEVE IT 'TILL JAMES TOLD US SO..........1999-01-15

I must of been nearly twelve years old when Say It Loud hit the air waves of New York. For the years preceding that I was caught between my older parents who were leery of the black power movement and the younger generation who embraced the idea of self empowering Black People everywhere. It wasn't until James Brown came out with SAY IT LOUD, did I take a stand, emotionally, spiritually and physically. After a bitter history of being labled as less than, ugly, ignorant, etc., James Brown bought to the nation and the world the real truth. We were Black, we were beautiful and we should be proud of that fact.

I am forever in Mr. Brown's debt for giving Black People everywhere a real national anthem, a song we danced to, sang to, got empowered and believed in. There were others out there telling us we should beleive in our greatness, but only James Brown could get us to really do it. Thank you Mr Brown for the powerful life long gift.
