This English guitarist continues his transformation from British-styled bebop master to Americanized contemporary jazz trendsetter with his second major-label release. While it's not as clean a recording as his last effort, Kiss & Tell, it's a much more focused disc, with more of Taylor's graceful and tasty guitar licks, and fewer featured guests. One of the sidemen, Kirk Whalum, who also coproduced, contributes two outstanding tunes, including the smooth, funky title track, and "Beboptimism," a tune with a traditional jazz melody over contemporary jazz rhythms and harmonies. Only Taylor's own "Green Lady" can be put safely in the tame smooth-jazz category, because there's a definite sharp edge to the most of the other tracks, particularly two of the cover tunes--Earth, Wind & Fire's "That's the Way of the World," with an unexpected key change towards the end, and a sumptuous version of the Isaac Hayes/Dionne Warwick hit "Déjà Vu," which experiments with tape loops, voices, and pretty much sounds like Taylor with Art of Noise. By a conservative count, this is Taylor's 40th album, but will probably the first to make a real impact across the pond in America. --Mark Ruffin

Jump Blues Fans MUST Buy This CD.......2001-12-08
Following his freshman effort "Fixin' Your Head," Nick Curran returns to Fort Horton studios in Austin, TX, and once again produces a contemporary jump blues masterpiece. Anyone that felt the first CD was beginner's luck will be convinced that Nick is the real deal with this one. Nick's first CD is a listener favorite on my blues radio show (KNON 89.3 FM Dallas, Mondays 6-8 Central) and this one is just a popular. For the skeptical, I like to play the title cut (Nitelife Boogie) against the origial recording. It's a close, authentic cover, true to the original but not a clone. Nick definitely has that early 50's sound down cold. These two CDs are turning Fort Horton studios into a meca for blues artists around the country. One listen and you will understand why. If you like jump blues in the style of T-Bone Walker, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, Magic Sam, Goree Carter, etc., do yourself a favor and get this CD right away!
Nick makes the Blues Jump!!.......2001-10-22
As far as people like Nick keep plays the blues in the old tradition of Texas-West Coast, still a Hope!!

This cd is crazy. I am a deejay in Long Island. These are all my hottest tracks. What A Feeling is an anthem. Mason - Exceeder is the bomb. The new Ian Van Dahl is hot. I would say this is the hottest cd comp of the year so far.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent guitar playing. .......2002-10-20
Exceptional recording!
Having listened to many guitarist over the years, I was pleasantly suprise to stumble upon this particular Martin Taylor release. It's exceptionally well recorded and performed, in addition to being both artistically and musically superb. Audiophiles should also appreciate its high-quality recording.
One of the better ones........2002-03-26
I bought this CD in August 2001 after listening at a CD shop during a vacation in Houston. I had never heard of him, and as far as I can tell he is not that well know in Europe. The reason I give this CD 5 stars is because since I bought it I have listened to it at least once and usually more times a week. Any CD that makes me do that is good in my book.
TAYLOR MADE!.......2002-02-09
Martin taylor does what no man (or woman for that matter) can do:Namely, give him a plank of wood and six strings and he will make you sing, dance or any old thing. The jazz purists ,I know ,won't and don't acknowledge this album but...what he makes of old Isaac Hayes numbers and Django type material just makes you glad to be alive. Martin can also be seen on a great website:geocities.com/johnmedd.
An uveneven collection with 2 gems.......2001-10-30
I had heard many good things about Martin Taylor and therefore had high expectations. Songs number 5 & 10 are truly gems. The rest is a potpourri of smooth jazz style drivel and frankly some bizarre noises. The first cut is a highly produced piece that is clearly targeted for the smooth-jazz airplay and is a pleasant song if you don't want to get too deep. There is unintelligible talking at the end of the first cut that hints at stranger things to come. The tinny slide guitar drone in the second song is so out of context I can't stand listening to it. Then I have to skip the next track due to more bizarre - well, noise. Yet another cut makes such poor use of echo that it reminds me of B-grade reggae bands with their overuse of electronics. Cut number 5 is a superb fingerstyle piece. Track 6 is again in the smooth-jazz style and makes it through all the way to the end without any annoyance - until the end. It stops so abruptly I wondered if my CD player broke. Track 10 is also a jewel in fingerstyle playing that is masterfully executed. Tracks 5 & 10 are almost worth the price of this CD, if you can mentally handle skipping over 6 to 8 other songs that you paid good money for. This is a very uneven collection.
The Beat Goes On..........2001-10-09
Martin Taylor strikes again. This cd is his best by far. It stretches his musical talents beyond the limit. If he never has another release, which I know he will, "Nitelife" will last forever. Look out Jonathan Butler and Doc Powell, you've got company!

thank heavens for the augmented dominant substitution.......2005-02-20
...and that's why the fifth star is missing. Overreliance on a particular harmonic formula. As a composition teacher of mine once said, "too much slow music". Nonetheless, there is some really great music on the set. The Joplin interpretations are fascinating. Her reinvestigations of her early music show her incredible ability to synthesize 50 years of Jazz style while maintaining her specificity, her individuality. Highly recommended - with minor cavils
Incomparable.......2000-12-09
Very possibly the best solo piano CD ever released. I'm not wild about the recording quality, but tiny flaws generally appear in even the priciest of our gems.

Awesome Euro Song.......2002-03-25
I recently bought this album during a trip to Europe. I frequented many clubs while in Europe and this song was played quite often. I'm really like the "Euro" and electronica syle dance music, and the song "Nightlife" is quite possibly one of the best euro songs I've ever heard. And believe me, growing up in Chicago, I've heard this type of music for a long time. I know the good ones when I hear them.
