A winner of the Thelonious Monk award for her piano playing, Lynn Arriale has been a star on the horizon for much of the 1990s. Alas, her star never rose stateside, though she's well respected in Europe. This set of eight generous tunes catches Arriale and her trio at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival, and the band and its leader are in top form. Arriale has the impressionistic sense of Bill Evans and the breakaway potential of Keith Jarrett, where melodies overcome her and she's off into their hinterlands, rhapsodizing or indulging some hard-hit keyboard commentary that's usually stunning. Her off-speed versions of Monk's quintessentially off-speed "Evidence" and "Think of One" are electrifying for their playfulness. So, too, is her ballad "With Words Unspoken," an elegant treasure of understatement--that is, until the tune sweeps her away. If it's piano you love, this will at least tip, if not gently bowl, you over. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Jazz trio.......2006-03-03

This is an excellent jazz group that has a full sound dispite being a trio. I recommend it for anyone who loves jazz.

5 out of 5 stars DAYTON SAYS: BUY THIS CD.......2001-01-06

The first time I heard the Lynne Arriale Trio was at a rustic jazz night spot (my favorite) called the Dearhead Inn, in Delaware Water Gap, PA. From that point forward, I have been a fan of this trio. Do you want to know why? Well, the trio has, as of this time, six CDs released, and if you want to know why I like them so very much, I would encourage you to buy ALL of the CDs. I have not seen the trio now for many years (they are WORLD performers and I am not, well, where the action is anymore), but when I notice a new CD released, I do not hesitate to buy one, as I know that the jazz will be fresh and inventive, and the overall performance will be a joy. Frankly, they're a class act! I'll let the jazz columnists fill you in on the specifics, but as for me, I am delighted to give my usual seal of approval here at AMAZON...DAYTON SAYS: BUY THIS CD....and ALL of their other CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Independent's Day.......2000-11-04

The much discussed 'Art of the Trio' is very much in evidence in this superlative live recording, with the outstanding pianist Lynne Arriale demonstrating her considerable gifts in detaching and reassembling tunes in new, provocative and dynamic ways, ably assisted by longtime collaborator Steve Davis on drums (or 'sounds'), and Jay Anderson's looming and tuneful bass. The trio manage to outMonk even the great Monk on the sombre 'Evidence', and other standout tracks like 'Estate','An affair to Remember' and the clipping Arriale original 'Calypso' are perfectly full of wonder. This is a timely reminder of one of the best evolving jazz piano trios around. As the album opens, one is naturally reminded of another piano trio night at Montreux, in 1968, and the Arriale trio can justifiably live in that august company. Recorded on July 4th 1999, this was truly an Independent's Day.

5 out of 5 stars The music, spirit, and essence of Rahsaan.......2005-04-04

One of the most memorable and magical nights I ever experienced was spent seeing and hearing Rahsaan Roland Kirk at the old Colony Club on Alvarado Street in Monterey, California around 1967-69. At one point he handed out little wooden flutes to the audience and we all played along to "Here Comes the Whistle Man." Although I wish I could re-visit that particular wonderful night, this performance at the 1972 Montreux Jazz Festival comes as close to capturing the music, spirit, and essence of Rahsaan as one can get without having been there.

If you were fortunate enough to have seen Roland Kirk live, perhaps you may feel, as I do, that all the instruments he played were merely accoutrements. Rahsaan himself was the instrument.

If you can find a copy of the video version of this performance entitled "The One Man Twins," grab it. You will be totally amazed by what you see and hear.

5 out of 5 stars And then there was.... ONE.......2001-01-23

Rahsaan Roland Kirk might be the single most unique sounding musician ever put to recorded sound. I was brought to Roland Kirk by listening to Morphine and wanted to trace the music back to it's taproot, assuming that if Dana Colley played two saxes and Roland had played more there must be something there.

And it was there.... it was all there every bit of music that anyone could ever want. Seasons rolls summer thunderclounds around the mind as Roland plays blues like no one else. I would own the album for that track alone. The listener is granted a wonderful glimpse of the man's great humor and wit in the recordings of Mr. Kirk's spoken interludes. For someone who's primary love in blues and jazz are the deeper sax and guitar sounds, this was altogether a revelation, that there could be great lightness of joy and sorrow in the blues. He carries great range in his perfomances with many voices and many instruments all played with a unique flair that is only his.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk makes remarkable music and this live recording is a perfect example of the emotional and musical range of the man and his music. If you like majestic performers of soulful and lifting music, I think you will enjoy the performances on this album greatly.

5 out of 5 stars LIVE in every sense!.......1999-08-08

Rahsaan was the Mohammed Ali of Jazz. He had amazing technique, great compositions, and a hip sense of humor, which jazz players sadly sometimes lack. This is a great set from the Montreux Jazz festival. It's just NOT LONG ENOUGH. "Pedal Up" fades out just when I would love to hear him go on! But don't let that stop you from buying this. This is like an explosion of power, color and sound. A great antidote for the antiseptic, flat "smooth jazz" of today and a great way to introduce yourself to REAL jazz, especially if you're not inclined to be a mellow, boring, laid-back modern "swinger." Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee...A REAL BIG BEE! You're gonna be flat on the mat like Joe Frazier when it's over.

5 out of 5 stars Really great jazz music........1999-07-16

We are so lucky to have had all of the performances at the Montreaux Jazz Festival recorded on both video and audio. Kirk shines here on a great set of jazz numbers composed by himself, and others. Seasons is a great track with some outstanding flute work and Volunteered Slavery is fantastic. A must for any fan of Kirk who wants a solid peice of live music to add to their collection.

        4 out of 5 stars it's ray - it's good.......2005-01-22

I read a review, where someone points out that the sounds quality is'nt that great. Maybe so (i did'nt hear it), but who cares? It's Ray Charles and seeing him working his keyboard without sound at all is a real pleasure.

The sound is great for anyone who just want's to enjoy the briliance and the genius of soul Ray charles.

I saw more dvd's of ray (for example "in miami with Diane Schuur" where mr. charles whas less active and looking much older. althoug he is (was) a old man and can't do all the things he used to do, on this particualy dvd "ray charles at the montreux jazz festival"he swings, smiles, dances behind his keyboard like he was 22.

        buy it and enjoy it

        2 out of 5 stars Lo-Fidelity.......2004-06-13

Sounds like it was mixed for a 2-inch tv speaker. It's all mids here. No high or low frequency extension. No dynamic range either. Nothing is loud or soft, just squished. It is Ray Charles so I couldn't bring myself to give this disc just one star but I was tempted.
