Album Description

The long-awaited follow-up to 1997's 'Iliana' finds Casolando delivering just what we want to hear. 'La Sirena' still beautifully evokes the music of Old Latin America, but goes new places with additional instrumentation and a live, in-the-room production quality that recalls the feel of the recent Buena Vista Social Club releases.

Many of the songs will be familiar to fans of the band's live performances, though the tracks have been pared down from the lengthy instrumental jams usually featured at those shows. Still, it's all here: The rich vocals of Carlos Ortega accompanied by his flawless guitar rhythms, the vocal harmonies and fiery classical guitar of Charlie Baran, the jazzy electric bass solos from Dave Hiltebrand, and the varied and as always perfect percussion of Chuck Sansone.

From the opening notes of the gorgeous `Dulce Amargo' to the plaintive `Guajira' to the stunning instrumental `Turbina', this album is about love and love lost and dancing and stellar musicianship all rolled into one. The title track will take your breath away.

La Sirena features guest appearances from Merritt Lear of the Celt-rocker Drovers, and Ross Bergseth from Chicago pop sensations Frisbie.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars great songs, recording quality makes my speakers cry in pain.......2002-01-05

The songs are very good, but the recording is so poor, my brand new speakers sound ripped when I play the cd. The band's first cd is magic, too bad they didn't record at the same studio and get a quality product for this release.

5 out of 5 stars the case of the missing CD..........2000-10-26

I've heard this CD at one of the many ubiquitous listening posts at a nearby, brightly lit, bustling Tower Records--right beside a nice display with several dozen of the shrinkwrapped plastic disks. A great follow-up to "Ileana" with lively and captivating vocals and driving guitars. I thought the recent Ketama release (Toma Ketama!) was fun to hear--this is better. Buy it now, but obviously not at Amazon where it's still listed as not released!
