5 out of 5 stars This needs a more articulate review..........2005-12-10

To tell the truth, the only reason I even listened to this disc in the store is because I spotted the cover, and wondered what the hell a guy who looked like that could sound like. I had a gushing smile on my face as I realized there was real talent and expression behind Moondog's odd facade. The first album on this disc (there are two herein) is made up of more "orchestral" material like none you've ever heard before (one of these tracks "stamping Grounds" is in "The Big Lebowski". The second album is made up of a series of short "rounds"; cyclical songs with naturally repetitive compositions (think row row row your boat, or three blind mice). Due to the familiar nature of such song forms, and the unique compositions employed by Moondog, the second album is quite buoyant and joyful. This is an all around great and very familiar listening experience, and quite a timeless set of albums. Get it while you still can!

4 out of 5 stars This Was Their Best.......2007-02-19

These guys started out with a lot of promise but never lived up to expectations. This was their best CD. It was worth it for Fo Fi Fo, The Shadow Of Your Smile, It's Getting Hot in Here and the awesome Tell Me A Bedtime Story by Herbie Hancock. Every other CD I have heard from these guys is disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Imagine This!.......2005-04-04

Pieces Of A Dream (on what I believe is their third album)
have a sound that is both mellow and potent.Mellowness by the way basically describes the bulk of what's here-softly jazzy pop/R&B with the occational Brazillian flourish. But three funk tunes make this album worth the investment as I look at it-first there's "For The Fun Of It",something of a proto hip-hop jam with scratches and going headlong into a spiraling synth solo.Similarly "It's Getting Hot In Here" is a deep groove that jams and is full of happy go lucky musical ideas."Fo Fi Fo",written by Grover Washington is a deep groove with a pleasant vocal. All and all 'Imagine That' is a superb example of this R&B/jazz trio and more then worth the listen.

5 out of 5 stars Good Job Wounded Bird !!!.......2004-10-17

Thumbs Up!!! Wounded Bird has done a great job putting out titles that are obscure or OOP This is the first time this has been released on cd so get it while you can. Hopefully they will release Pieces Of A Dream and We Are One in the near future.....

5 out of 5 stars 35 unmistakable tracks.......2005-02-24

You don't need to buy the double-disc "Moondog 1 & 2" to hear the two albums - all that music can also be heard on this (75 minute) single disc.
Even though the only cover art of this edition is the original front cover of the 1969 "Moondog" (no original back-cover thereof nor any art from the 1971 "Moondog II",) all 35 tracks are nicely crammed in here.
What's listed under "Listen to samples" on the amazon page are only the last 20 tracks of this CD and all titles are linked to the wrong tracks.

"Moondog I" (tracks 1-9) opens with "Theme" and "Stomping Ground" - two somewhat coherent pieces which a few years ago were made quite famous through the soundtrack of Coen Brothers' wonderful movie "The Big Lebowski." The album features a 50+ piece orchestra, which, among other greats, includes jazz veterans Don Butterfield (tuba) and Ron Carter (double bass.) In the list of personnel, Moondog is not credited for playing percussion, but the bass, which I assume is a misprint.
The beautiful Charlie Parker homage "Lament I: Bird's Lament" is here performed in its original form, but can also be found on the 1994 Moondog recording "Sax Pax For a Sax" on only saxes and percussion.
The orchestral performances on "Moondog I" aren't flawless, but should not be judged harshly because of the very personal, highly individual, and wonderfully eccentric form of compositions that they are. Budget, which is a very common issue when it comes to orchestral recordings, is another element that probably has not allowed much rehersing or many (if any) re-takes.

Before ordering this disc I knew that I'd love "Moondog I" since I'd heard most of it previously, but I was skeptical towards "Moondog II" because of some reviews I'd read of it. I was however curious, and listening to it when it had arrived was a very nice surprise.
Aside from performances by Louis "Moondog" Hardin (percussion, piano, vocals) and his daughter June (vocals,) "Moondog II" features 6 other musicians who, at different points throughout the album, play virginals, recorders, harpsichords, ancient organs, guitars, schom, viola de gamba, and troubadour harp. These instruments alone make a very individual sound, but the compositions (many of which are in 5/4 and 5/8) and the poetry make this the most wonderful group of rounds (short vocal canons) you've ever heard.

In my 600+ CD collection, this is among my favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-01-26

Beautiful, quirky, fascinating. A combination of classical, jazz, and improv, this collection made me close my eyes and just feel the music. Interspersed with several of Hardin's two-line poems as punctuation, the musical pieces are truly a wonder.

5 out of 5 stars The Different Drummer We Once Were.......2004-01-05

I bought this album because of a memory, but the music stands up remarkably well to a more objective listening.

It was my first trip to New York City, and my father approached the wildly-dressed, tall and intiimidating figure standing on the corner of 56th St. and 7th Ave. They conversed in Norwegian long enough for me to draw nearer and realize the stranger represented no threat. In fact, I left with a book of hs canons, which remains in my collection of piano literature to this day.

I met Moondog once again--serendipitously, on Milwaukee's Wisconsin Avenue one day in the seventies. I have no idea how he got there or how he left, but this time I wanted to protect him from the insensitive pedestrians swirling around us and threatening our shared moment.

Moondog's music is as singular as he is, and offers a glimpse into his creative spirit. It begins with an idea and a form, not with an emotion or sentiment. Each piece is simple and brief, but not simplistic or fragmentary. He avoids any form of dissonance, even seventh chords and "blue" notes (flatted thirds). Music, like life, he seems to be saying, can be a straightforward, delighting adventure, providing one cherishes the quest itself above its so-called object and maintains a focused attention on the wonders of the present moment.

My only slight disappointment with this recording is that the madrigals, sung by Moondog and his daughter, are subjected to some studio effects that make them sound more artificial and commercial than they deserve to be.

5 out of 5 stars For those who love the music.......2003-11-29

It is simple, it is clear, it is wonderful! I don`t know what style is this. Some people call it `jazz`, but second disc is strongly attached to european madrigal canons. I think, if we listen really good music, we never asked about styles. I heard familiar tunes from Tchaikovsky to Resident`s Duck Stab. You must have this if you`re music lover. If you`re musician (who plays music, dont `have a job`) you must have it too. Listen once or twise, if you don`t like it, simply put it on the shelf. Properly time will come.
P.S. My favorite `I love you` and `Nero`s Expedition`

5 out of 5 stars Moondog.......2002-05-16

I was in the St. Thomas Boys Choir in the early 70's. We would walk to church for rehearsal, and pass Moondog, standing on the corner, usually by the ABC building. A couple of us would talk to him in our free time...he knew our names by our voices. We would listen to his poetry, and he seemed intigued by our choir, although he never heard us, I think. I got his album around this time, and have had it ever since. Fascinating pieces, very intricate, but also with "a hook"...that you find yourself humming along with. I heard he moved to Germany, where he wrote a nine hour canon. Overall, an amazing life story, and an incredible talent.

Album Description

Boston's The Douglas Fir, whose principal songwriter is Jay Walsh, may share similar influences to NYC early '80s revivalists such as Interpol, Longwave, and The Walkmen, but they beat those groups to the punch, having played their blend of chilling, atmospheric, effects laden pop since the late '90s. They're also better than the aforementioned bands, adding more colors and a softer touch to the mix, bringing to mind underrated legends such as The Chameleons, The Church, and The Straitjacket Fits on this monumental debut album. And then there's the songwriting; Walsh's spectacular, vivid lyrical narratives flow like your favorite short stories or those old Hitchcock films name checked on "My Favorite Thing." Don't miss out on this one! -The Big Takeover Magazine

      5 out of 5 stars total awareness.......2007-06-04

This is an incredible CD. The power of Giliad's voice coupled with the specific instruments cannot be explained in words. One has to experience it. It brings you to your center while awakening your awareness in totality. Powerful! I am so glad that I purchased this CD.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-10-25

I love this CD because it's not just "soothing music" (I have enough of those). This one has just enough vocal content to keep you on task with the chants, but not so intrusive that you can't relax.

But there's something I want to know....

What do the terms B'OOMA and G'DOLA mean/focus on?

      Does anyone know?

      5 out of 5 stars what stress?.......2002-06-24

I am not into "healing", woodoo medicine, and I definitely cannot meditate and sit calmly--come on, this is 21st century!
But this CD melts me down like a butter!!! I don't know what it is, but my jaw drops down and my musles and brain don't function anymore. If I am in some stressful situation I put on this CD and amazing things happen-I relax. I have another testimony. I couldn't find something I was looking for, something really important, but with a help of this CD I was able to retrieve intuitively location of the object!
I don't pariticipate in tonal ladder, I just listen, works good enough for me. Words of a meditation sounds a little bit pegan, but what the heck, it works. I might start to believe in this!

      5 out of 5 stars Stress Buster.......2001-10-25

I don't usually write - but after the September 11 tragedy, anything that helps, I want to share.

Rhythms of the Natural Voice really helps me to relax and calm stress. It is very soothing.

5 out of 5 stars This disc REALLY relaxes me........2001-09-07

What can I say. I listen to this disc over and over again, and each time I find something different which takes me to a cleaner place inside of me.
I use it at work in my computer. I focus better. The disc cover says that the technique is based on the use of voice and rhythm as was used in ancient times. Evidently, those ancients knew what they were talking about, because this disc WORKS.
As I listen more and more, the effect grows on me. Sometimes, I get tingly, sometimes it awakens me. I never stay apathetic.
Also, I like to listen to it in the car. Other relaxation tapes or discs I wouldn't dare listen to while driving. But this one, because of the drums, which focus me, make me more focused in driving, and more relaxed in traffic. I feel like I am on an exotic journey without ever leaving home.
      Try it, you'll like it.

      Product Description

"Take No Prisoners" is HSQ's future, featuring 12 new recordings of driving rock - from Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" to the Stones "Paint It Black" to the Cranberries "Zombie," the original rock string quartet pulls no punches here. On this CD, HSQ has risen to the pinnacle of its "rock-dom." It is aggressive, pounding, virtuosic, yet not without its palate cleansing moments of tenderness. HSQ shows its range here - broad and horizontal through a myriad of epxressions to flagrant and vertical through a temporal range of styles. If this is for you, listen to it loud or don't bother. Remember, you can always get that other string quartet off the shelf and listen to some Haydn (not a disparaging comment -he's HSQ's mentor)

It is a shame that this group isn't still producing music. They are refreshing and inspirational to my young violinists!

I'm fortunate enough to work with Cary, the guitarist of The Soupbone Throne. I bought a copy of their CD off of him at work on a lark, and upon getting home and popping it into my CD player, I was awestruck. The instrumentals are wired tight, Coby provides some seriously tortured vocals, and overall this band blows away all the corporate rock bands being promoted by Clear Channel nowadays. There is a depth to the vocals and a clean, unique sound that defies categorization. I'm a metalhead, my mom is into country, and my sister likes pop, but we all agree that The Soupbone Throne has more than enough talent to be a national act. Buy this CD and you won't be disappointed. Better still, if you live in the New England area, check out their website at www.thesoupbonethrone.com for show dates and check them out live. This band is the real deal. Their shows sound every bit as good as their studio release.

5 out of 5 stars You Must Buy this Album!!!.......2005-01-30

Although I consider myself more of a heavy metal person, I really enjoy the Soupbones's music. the grooves and lyrics are so addicting! The rhythm section is so tight and tasteful that I get completely drawn in the mode of each song. To top it all off, the dynamics are awesome! every song seems to carry you along on a journey with a lot of ups and downs. the Soupbone Throne definitely has a unique sound but it grew on me quickly.
Summary: I'm addicted to this album!!! Buy it and you will be too!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Throne Rules.......2005-01-20

I heard this cd at a record store in Maine. The guy working there was playing it in the store, and I immediately fell in love with it. Really cool lyrics and excellent grooves.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Great Band.......2005-01-02

A friend of mine at college at UMass played this CD for me, and I was hooked. Then, I happened to catch their performance at The Middle East Nightclub and was awestruck. The singer prowled the stage like a caged panther, the bass player was a mass of energy, bouncing around all over the stage, the guitar player seemed to me the most serious one in the band, added beautiful melody and sang backup vocals, and the drummer, well, he was just perfect for the band. That night, the band played a lot of new material not on this CD, but, as great as this CD is, their next one could be even better, from the songs that I heard. Either way, you need to get this CD. You won't be disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2004-12-31

I had seen this band play in Massachusetts and was blown away by their talent as musicians, the depth of the lyrics, and the bands showmanship on stage. I had actually gone to see a friend of mine's band play, and The Soupbone Throne opened for them. Unfortunately,The Soupbone Throne ruined the rest of my night because none of the following acts even came close to these guys. I immediately purchased their CD and it hasn't left my CD player since. I have also read some of the phenomenal reviews of this album, including one review that called them 'The Next Big Thing'.I couldn't agree more! Buy it, Buy It, Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Steppers Music.......2001-09-08

I've had this CD for about 8 months. For the Chicago steppers scene, this album gets a lot of playing time. The title track is a nice smooth flowing piece perfect for stepping. There are 5 other tracks that will definately have your head boppin'. I strongly recommend purchasing this CD. You won't be sorry!
