The first Modern Jazz Quartet sessions recorded for release as a 12-inch LP also featured the debut of Connie Kay, who replaced Kenny Clarke on drums. The expanded recording time afforded by the new configuration allowed the group to put together a program approximating a live performance: "Ralph's New Blues" leads off, a showcase for the easy-swinging soul of vibraphonist Milt Jackson and the ever-elegant fulcrum of the quartet, pianist John Lewis. Percy Heath sets down an eloquent walking bass pattern or repeats the melody in a rondo format, while Kay adds subtle pulse and appropriat punctuation. Lewis and Jackson also display remarkable empathy on the ballads "All of You" and "Softly as in a Morning Sunrise." The sprightly set-closing title track employs all of the unit's strengths. --John Swenson

Customer Reviews:
Cool Counterpoint.......2004-04-28
This underrated album is an Apollonian masterpiece. It balances the cool, formalist approach to jazz (that one expects from MJQ) with a genuine swinging impulse. The recording features two originals (by Jackson and Lewis) framing a set of superb and superbly played standards. "I'll Remember April," transformed into a hard-swinging scherzo, is a real stand-out (although Erroll Garner's version from a few months later remains definitive in my book). The concluding title track is Lewis's tour-de-force, a complex jazz fugue that lends the session a strong feeling of culmination. Throughout, the album delivers subtle counterpoint ("Softly" begins by quoting from Bach's Musical Offering) and thoughtful structure; it really rewards carefully attention. If you like your jazz on the cool, cerebral side, or if you are coming to jazz from the world of classical music, this album should be mandatory listening. But the music isn't austere: in addition to being substantive, it's a lot of fun.
quiete please, i'm trying to listen to concorde.......2004-02-28
i HAVE TO ADMIT WHEN i JUST SKIPPED FROM SONG TO SONG, NOT LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM THOROULY ,I ALMOST THREW THIS OUT. NOW I APPRECIATE IT AND HAVE GROWN TO LOVE IT. CONNIE'S DRUMMING IS REALLY QUITE. YOU CAN WATCH AND SEE HOW HE PROGRESSIVLLY BECOMES MORE RELAXED AND LOUDER ON FUTURE ALBUMS.
Simply superb!.......2001-07-15
The MJQ at their very best. Recording is from the fifties with a little hiss etc.
Very Good record.......1999-09-21
This is a very good record with "I'll Remember April" and the title track "Concorde" being my favorite tracks. You need a good stereo system for this record!

Customer Reviews:
The search for the perfect song.......2006-01-21
Refer to Aztec Camera and Prefab Sprout. Add a bit of Scritti Politi, the name of the album is reminiscent of their titles, such as Cupid & Psyche 85. Even though the whole album is very well produced for me it starts to soar with the The Sound Of Your Name. You can almost taste the joy of Stephen Becker's search for the perfect song. The next song It's The Minor Chords That Kill You continues as a great rock song, ending the album on an ironic note with the song I Hate Rock And Roll, another great rock song. I also like the minimalist sound of Taxi in the Snow. I can really relate to the hopeless romantic vein of I Will Go To My Grave Wanting You To Love Me. Cue another reference Prayer Boat and their only album Polichinelle. Just like that one you can start Universe and Villa with the repeat button on.
I only just bought the record in December when I had already made up my top five, otherwise it would have been placed higher.
The album is a record of the search for the perfect pop song. A journey that I am glad to go along on.
A great pop-rock purchase.......2005-04-23
...but I haven't bought it, nor have I heard all of it. I've downloaded most of it via iTunes, and it's just flat-out a really good, realiable, accessible pop-rock album. For fans of: The New Pornographers, The Smiths, and The Dandy Warhols. Check out "Parallel Lives"
