Wilbur Harden was an enigma, a promising trumpet and flügelhorn player who never lived up to his potential. When these sessions were originally issued in 1958, they were released under his name; Coltrane was paid only the nominal session fee of $41.25.So it was in the late 1950s for the man who was soon to become the undisputed chieftain of the tenor sax. But Trane was just one of the many hired guns assembled by Harden to augment him on this set of mostly original compositions. Joining him here on the sessions--issued here in their entirety for the first time--are also, at one time or another, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Howard Williams on piano, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ali Jackson on bass, Louis Haynes on drums, Arthur Taylor also on drums, and Doug Watkins on bass. The musicians stampede through the sessions with finesse and vigor and nary a hint of chafe. This is classic, '50s postbop in all its frothing glory. Coltrane's work, in particular, is exemplary; this was just prior to the time he achieved supernova status, and one can sense the near-mythic vibes building, not only in the swooping breadth of his soloing on "Wells Fargo--(Take 1)" but on the complex wrangling in "E.F.F.P.H" as well. The other true luminary is Tommy Flanagan, whose Monk-derived work is a gift throughout. Actually, Flanagan bookends the sessions, having been temporarily replaced by Howard Williams in the midst of the recordings; because the tracks are programmed in the exact order they were recorded, a good lump of Williams is spread over both discs. As for Harden, despite the promise he showed as both a bandleader and soloist, he died in obscurity. He never rendered much else, but these sides did show amazing promise. Their reissue is an invaluable addition to the legacy of jazz. --Joe S. Harrington

All the things you are (108) and Dizzy atmosphere (109) is sound on this cd much better then on Savoy version.

Excuse my terrible English!.......2003-10-31
Wilbur Harden was born in 1925, in Alabama. One of the first musicians of the Jazz to play faintly very so much the trumpet as the fluegelhorn, Harden began his career playing R&B. After working with Yusef Lateef in 1957, he recorded four sessions for Savoy in 1958: three with John Coltrane and one with pianist Tommy Flanagan. With 35 years old, due to health problems, he disappeared of the musical scenery, after recording with the trombonist Curtis Fuller in 1960. If we cannot include Harden among the geniuses of the Jazz, we can easily included among one of the best of his instrument, besides skilled composer (with prominence for the Wells Fargo and Snuffy). Nothing justifies, therefore, the ostracism that until then he was relegated. Proves of that you find in the two excellent cd's of the present compilation. As we read of the cd's title, the sophisticated touch of Harden is accompanied in all the tracks by John Coltrane's contrasting and already restless sound. Newly he go out of the experience of six months with Thelonious Monk in Five Spot and already member of Miles Davis' famous first sextet, Coltrane is in that phase that tries to position `par excellence' as the soloist of tenor sax of the bebop (in frank competition with Sonny Rollins). Then the sensational contrast between his touch and the one of Harden (that explores the medium tones as few in the Jazz trumpet). To the piano (in the two cd's) we found a Tommy Flanagan economical and necessary playing, without never to get lost in the easy resources that he used sometimes when accompanying singers or in some of your more sugary soils. In four tracks he is substituted by the competent Howard Williams. Also in all the tracks of the first cd (that presents sound quality surprisingly good) we counted with Doug Watkins's excellent and discreet presences (bass) and Louis Hayes (drums). In the second cd (that looks a sound quality slightly inferior to the first) we counted with the support of the formidable and vehement Ali Jackson (bass) and Arthur Taylor (drums). Besides them, we have the thickened and intelligent blow of Curtis Fuller in the trombone. Like this, it is with plenty peacefulness that I recommend this great disk to the general lovers of the Jazz and to the disciples of Coltrane in matter.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing music, mediocre packaging.......2007-05-07
The music is wonderful. Bird is amazing, playing the best on these recordings he ever did (excluding "Charlie Parker With Strings" and "Jazz At Massey Hall"). Most people buying this already know that, though. However, in movement the discs get displaced easily and their are several scratches on my CD's. If you clean the cd's and use an up-to-date Cd player they have no effect, but if you use an old cd player or import them onto your computer they come up. 5 stars for the music 3 stars for the packaging.
Essential jazz history at a phenomenal price.......2006-10-21
Presumably if you are reading this review you already know who Charlie Parker is (one of the great innovators in the history of jazz), but you are wondering whether you should splash out for a complete set of his Savoy & Jazz recordings -- and also whether if this is *the* set you should order. I highly recommend it.
Just to clarify what this is, it is the complete studio recording sessions that Charlie Parker did for a group of small record labels in the 40's such as Savoy, Guild, Mercury, Dial, Clef, Norgran...generally these have come to be known as the Savoy and Dial recording sessions. These cuts contain the music that made Charlie Parker a legend and, indeed, changed the course of jazz music. They also contain work of a number of other masters like Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis; many of these recordings were originally with other musicians as the leaders of the sessions but they have come to be treasured because of the work of Charlie Parker on them.
This is a "complete" set of the recordings, meaning that it not only contains the "master" recordings that were released to the public but also the alternate takes. Alternate takes are often complete takes that were judged not quite as good as the version that released...or they may be false starts, takes plagued with a few errors, or takes with small technical problems. At any case, these alternates give you a chance to hear Bird and his sidemen working through numbers, perfecting approaches, and trying out different improvisations.
In the days of the LP record or even CD player these "complete" sets were a chore; you would put on a disc and then hear multiple versions of a the same song in a row. However, if you digitize your music, it's relatively simple to put together complete or "edited" playlists to your liking...therefore I think these Complete sets are even a greater value than they used to be.
In recent years there has been quite a bit of growth in the availability of classic American jazz, blues and roots music coming out of Europe. Though not an expert, it's my understanding that copyrights expire after 50 years outside the U.S. and therefore a bunch of folks in Europe are in the business of re-issuing old US music at cut-rate prices..and the label that produces this (Definitive) is one of those.
[You may spot some customer reviews on this site criticizing this practice, but from what I can tell it appears to be legal, and results from entrepreneurs taking an opportunity of variations in legal regimes around the world. Without lengthening the debate, I would also note that the ethical issues around these recordings could be discussed at length -- for example, many of the beboppers' original recordings were simply new melody lines put on top of chord changes from the pop tunes of the day, and no licenses fees were paid, for example, when Bird recorded "Donna Lee" on the chord changes of "Indiana" or "KoKo" on the changes from "Cherokee." In fact, there is at least one recorded instance of a recording engineer stopping a session in the middle when the musicians stray too close to a copyright-protected melody line. In any case, the law appears to be that the original rights owners, and their corporate descendants, have had 50 years to profit from these songs on 78, LP, 45, 8-track, cassette and CD. It seems to me that the Europeans would not have a shot at the market if the US labels who owned the rights improved thier packaging/labeling/pricing of these reissues; in any case, as a consumer I appear to have a choice of how I spend my money and I voted for this version.]
The great thing about this set is it's a nicely put together set of these complete recordings at a phenomenal price; you really can afford to buy this set for a little more than a price of Savoy and Dial masters; you get the alternate takes for not much more additional money.
Considering the source material, the sound quality of this release is excellent. I contain several versions of a number of these tracks and these rank as good or better as any of the others that I own.
This is an 8-set with the CD's packaged in two four-packs. The tracks are arranged with the masters at the beginning of each CD and all the alternates at the end of each CD (so you don't have to listen to multiple versions of a song if you don't want to). Each CD also contains a very clear explanation of the sessions for each recording -- with the personnel, dates, record label, and recording master numbers clearly delineated. A very nice touch is the fact that there is a large book in the set that contains all the session and track listings, and then two smaller listings included in the two CD packs. The booklet also contains a serviceable bigoraphy of Charlie Parker, which any purchaser of this set likely doesn't need.
All in all this is amazing music, a great package, and an amazing value.
The guys selling hubcaps stole them off YOUR car ..........2006-05-02
Here come "Calvados" and his bootleggers with another inferior burn-over, this time of the Savoy and Dial studio recordings Bird made in mid-career. Both sets are now owned by Savoy, and, usually, available from that label that did so much for African American jazz music. I say "usually", because with boiler room burn-over technicians at work, in Spain or wherever "Calvados" and his cronies are lurking these days, it's getting hard to to pay the bills incurred in producing high quality CD's, re-mastered, researched, with informative liner notes, etc. "Calvados" and his bums are watching to see what sells, then cut right in with a slapdash burn-over.
I can recommend both the Savoy set, as well as the Dial sessions re-mastered by Stash, a now-defunct re-issue label. The thieves at Definitive know nothing and care nothing about jazz.

Perfect music, but absolutely poor packaging........2005-08-25
I love music from Savoy and Dial labels.
Sound on this box is for me very good, but session with Dizzy Gillespie (February 28,1945)has more worse sound as Definitive box set.
Packaging on this set is worst I ever seen.
I have problems with defective disc 4 too, but Savoyjazz send me correct version (on savoyjazz is address) without problems.
Great Music, Poor Packaging, and a Defective Disc.......2004-07-30
The music on this set is truly excellent, and for the most part the remastered sound is a noticeable improvement over previous CD releases of this material. The many alternative takes make for very interesting comparative listening, and quite a few of them are as good as or even better than the respective master takes (often Parker's solo is more interesting on one of the alternative takes, while the master offers a more polished performance by the band as a whole). If judging the music alone, I would certainly give the set five stars.
Unfortunately, there are some problems with the way Savoy has presented this music. The discs are packaged in cardboard sleeves attached to a spiral binder, and the sleeves are so tight that it is very difficult to remove the discs from them. To avoid scratching the discs, it would be best to take them out of the binder and store them in plastic jewel cases. Additionally, in the accompanying booklet, the track information is incorrect for a number of tracks on discs seven and eight. As of this writing, you can get a corrected track listing by contacting Savoy at inquiries@savoyjazz.com.
A more serious problem is that at least some copies of the set are still being sold with a defective version of disc four, on which most of the tracks are recorded about 10% too fast. If you already have the set, you can determine whether your copy of disc four is defective by checking the timing of the master take of "Donna Lee" (track 13): if the timing is 2:35, you have the pitch-corrected disc, but if it is 2:22, you have the defective disc and need to get a replacement. As of this writing, you can do that by contacting Savoy at inquiries@savoyjazz.com; after asking you a question to verify that you have the defective disc, they will send you a replacement. (At least one other Amazon reviewer reports that Savoy ignored his requests for a replacement disc, but I did not encounter this problem when I contacted them after purchasing the set in February 2004).
Those who don't want to spend quite so much money, or who don't want to go to quite so much trouble to correct Savoy's mistakes, should consider purchasing the three-disc "Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes" (ASIN B00006H6A6). Though far less comprehensive than the "Complete Studio Sessions," it's a great value and provides an excellent overview of some of Parker's best recordings.
