About the Artist
David Liebman was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946. He began classical piano lessons at the age of nine and saxophone by twelve. Seeing John Coltrane perform live in New York City clubs sparked his interest in jazz. Throughout high school and college, Liebman pursued his jazz interest by studying with Joe Allard, Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd as well as taking a leading role in organizing musicians into a cooperative, Free Life Communication -- all part of the lively New York "loft" jazz scene. Upon graduation from New York University (with a degree in American History), he began to seriously devote himself to the full time pursuit of being a jazz artist.
After some time spent with Ten Wheel Drive, one of the early jazz-fusion groups, Liebman secured the saxophone/flute position with the group of legendary Coltrane drummer Elvin Jones. Within two years, Liebman reached the zenith of his apprenticeship period when Miles Davis hired him. These years, 1970-74, were filled with tours, recordings and the incredible experience gained by being on the bandstand with two masters of jazz. At the same time, Liebman began exploring his own music-first in the Open Sky Trio with Bob Moses and then with Richie Beirach in Lookout Farm. Tours of India, Japan and Europe and in the US helped Lookout Farm be recognized as #1 in as "Group Deserving of Wider Recognition" in the 1976 Down Beat International Critics' Poll.
Liebman went unto perform with Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Eddie Gomez, Pat Metheny, John Abercrombie, John Scofield, and others. He is a Grammy nominee with over 50 recordings as a leader and over 200 recorded original compositions, ranging from orchestral works and string/wind/sax quartets to re-workings of Puccini and Bernstein to world music with Sardinian, Indian, and Asian musicians.
Liebman has written several pedagogical texts and was "teaching" jazz well before the subject was generally recognized. He is also the founder (1989) and present artistic director of the IASJ, the International Association of Schools of Jazz, an organization comprised of international jazz schools from over 40 countries. His teaching activities at universities and in clinic settings have taken him literally around the world, primarily because of his varied musical interests, expertise on several instruments and ability to articulate the intricacies of the jazz language, aesthetic and technique. Over the years, he has regularly received grantees to study with him funded by the NEA (US), the Canadian Arts Council, as well as arts councils of numerous countries. Liebman himself has received two NEA grants for composition (1980) and performance (1991).
In 1997, Liebman received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the prestigious Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. In 1998, David was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Jazz Solo for the recording of "My Favorite Things" on Thank You, John (Arkadia) and was inducted in 2000 into the Hall of Fame of The International Association of Jazz Educators for his contributions to jazz pedagogy.
The debut recording of the David Liebman Big Band (conducted by Gunnar Mossblad), Beyond the Line, was released on OmniTone in 2003.
Product Description
World debut recording!
Winner of prestigious Aaron Copland Award!
Seven compositions from jazz crusader David Liebman's, drawn from his 30+ year career and reflecting the eclectic musical styles and trends he's assimilated, have been arranged by six leading arrangers including Jim McNeely and Vince Mendoza. Also included is the audaciously re-worked, Grammy-nominated "Sing Sing Sing," written specifically for Liebman as soloist with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band.
Lieb's big band is an cross-stylistic collective of top-flight East Coast performers and improvisors. The music is filled with unusual harmonies and room for collective improvisation and ranges from the fusion-jazzy "Fracas" to the programmatic, deeply moving "Hiroshima Memorial" to the mysterious and deeply harmonic "Carissima" to the chamber music-like "Done With Restraint" to the flowing, polychromatic brushstrokes of "Pablo" (for Picasso).

Atmospheric Music to a Memorable Screenplay .......2006-03-21
Everything about this excellent score is pure America. The tempo corresponds to the changing moods of the film from the rolling road rhythm to the erotic tango and the college flaky beat during the practical joke which misfires. I am the only member of my family who hasn't visited the USA but I am hoping to one day make the trip and experience the multitude of cultures which inspired Thomas Newman, the composer, to produce such musical imagery in the changing scenes.

Good original score, though better old melodies.......2002-10-08
As a matter of fact I bought this CD not as much due to Mr. Newman's original scrore, but since I liked very much the treatment of the beatiful Spanish song "La Violetera" in key moments of the film. Mr. Newman's music is very good, but the Spanish and Argentine music he used was much better. The performances of "The Tango Project" are superb. "La Violetera" is probably the nicest Spanish song, talking of a florist; it is widely known in its original version in Spain and Latin America, and moreover, came to international light thanks to Charles Chaplin's "City Lights" where it was the Leitmotif of the blind florist girl (a very adequate use indeed). The tango "Por una Cabeza" is probably the highlight of the score, because it is the piece danced by Al Pacino; unfortunately the other tango "Caminito", played by the orchestra at the restaurant, does not appear here. It is a petty. As a whole, I like the CD very much, especially the two performances of "The Tango Project", but just because they are more touching to my cultural heritage. Nonetheless, I praise both Mr. Newman's personal compositions as well as his perfect use of other's melodies.
Nicely done, Thomas, nicely done........2002-08-15
This cd is worth price of admission for one huge reason, the main theme music. It comes at us twice during our listening journey of Scent Of a Woman. It is likened to a kid finally learning to ride a bike for the first time, flying down his neigborhood road with a look of pride and surprise smudged neatly on his face. It is a delightful melody that will continue to stick in your mind for a long, long while.
Other notable tracks on this score are tracks 45 in 25, Balloons, Beyond Danger, and End Title.
This is a must cd for Newman fans and a very nice addition for any fan of film scores. Enjoy!
Newman is On and Off, as Usual.......2001-10-16
Scent of a Woman is 50% of a truly great film score...and 50% of a truly bad film score. It's obvious to the listener from which category a particular track comes from. Newman either gives the listener a vibrant, exciting, "new age" melody, or something that can only arguably be defined as music.
The fact remains, however, that when this score is on, it is REALLY on. The Main Title is an exciting track and the more emotional themes can really grab you by the heartstrings (though they undoubtedly hearken back to other works by Newman).
All in all though, for anyone familiar with Newman, two other scores better exemplify his talents. If you are looking for the unorthodox, "new age" Newman, go with American Beauty. If it's lush strings and sentiment you're after, go with Meet Joe Black (my personal favorite Newman score to date). Both will leave you with a much better idea of this talented composer.
Contains a GREAT song.......2000-01-19
Por Una Cabeza is a great song. I could listen to it all day. This is the first cd I found with a good version of it.

Voices Full of Emotion.......2005-12-19
Once you hear this chorus...whether under the Red Army Choir or Soviet Army Choir banner...you will be addicted. I certainly am. This is not the best disc available on Amazon, but it is unique in that it showcases all Russian songs (since the chorus was a "national" choir, recordings done in London, Paris, etc. frequently contain songs from other countries). And while there may be better and more professional recordings, of this choir and more professional bands, these soldiers succeed in achieving a wide range of color with their vocal talent on this recording. A great bargain.
Sound quality.......2004-07-06
The songs that are chosen on this CD are excellent. The problem, the sound recording is not great. It is clear, but when the choir sings in a low tone, it is simply cannot be heard.
A Trip to Soviet Russia.......2004-03-18
In the 1970's, it seemed that defectors from the USSR made headlines in American newspapers every day. When a dancer defected, it was always believed that artistic freedom was the cause. When writers defected, it was due to the controversy surrounding their works. Athletes were usually viewed as wanting a taste of the good life, but when the Red Army Choir defected, it was a sweet victory for the west. These people were the symbol of all the USSR stood for and sang anthems praising the Soviets, yet they longed for freedom. We loved it when they defected.
Even though many of the songs performed by the ensemble praised the virtues of the Soviet Union, western audiences love the group. No it was not due to be soft on Communism. The group had a sound that was addictive and possessed terrific musical gifts, all of which can be found in this recording.
Listening to this recording is almost nostalgic now that the Soviet Union is no longer, but the recording has a certain appeal. It includes all the favorites including Meadowlands (Polyushku pole), Dark Eyes, Moscow Nights, and the Volga Boatman's Song, probably the best piece on the recording. The ensemble performs well together, the band give the music a distinct sound, and while the soloists are not perfect, the imperfections somehow seem appropriate.
There are more expensive recordings by this ensemble, but this budget CD is not just well worth the price, it is actually one of the best available.
Good Value.......2003-11-03
Considering the number of classic songs and the price, you really can't go wrong here. like another poster, i was a bit dissapointed by some very low music in some selections. but for the most part, the quality is quite good and the music is a very nice way to begin to understand and learn about the Russian people.
Good, but not perfect.......2003-01-19
This is a very good CD, and the music really captures the power and total authority of the Soviet state. It is very moving music on one hand, and also really reflects the situation of the Russian workingmen living under this tyranny. This CD would get 5 stars, but there are a few portions where the sound is so soft that it cannot be heard, such as at the beginning of the sixth track. This is the only problem with the CD worth noting, the CD is done by the Red Army choir, and the songs are virtually all made of of the huge band & choir, Soviet power music that we all have come to know and love. I do recommend this CD strongly.

i can't believe the reggae fans out there aren't picking this up. the Gregory Isaacs tune alone is worth your $3.50, then add some Prince Far I , Big Youth, U-Roy and Keith Hudson and what you have is an embarrassment of riches. Great reggae.

Lorie plays with ease, skill, and dexterity that soothes and amazes. She did "Blowing in the Wind" as a conclusion to one of my Chapel talks - it is here in all of its intricate, melodic glory. She carries you back and forth with imaginative trills between the theme notes. A wonderful adventure!

Product Description
Mike VanPortfleet's post Lycia debut. Crystalline harmonic washes resonating from the cold depths of mind & Matter. Glacial rhythms & aquatic ghost voices channel aggression & serenity through fathoms of uncharted sea. If Brian Eno collaborated with Justin Broadrick, it might sound like this. Majestic & heartbreaking. Angst-ridden & placid.
1. Deep in the Morning Sun
2. Echoes of the Lost Sea
3. Towards the Blinding Glare
4. The Call of the Horizon Line
5. Stellar Buckshot Awaits

Fabulous solo disc from Lycia frontman .......2006-01-18
Mike VanPortfleet is obviously better known under the Lycia banner, if you love their stuff you will also find this album a treasure. However, this solo disc offers a far more ambient affair. Half hidden sonic tints arrive from the distance to linger and haunt before slipping away again into the ether. A truly evocative and otherwordly vibe permeates this disc, headphones are a must!
