Wynton Marsalis's 1982 debut was recorded before the trumpeter had reached his 20th birthday and when he was still a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In many ways it was a pivotal event for jazz in the '80s, as Marsalis became the central figure in a return to the acoustic styles of the late '50s and '60s and the model for all the young lions to come. While there are elements of Miles Davis in Marsalis's style, the strongest parallels are with Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, the pyrotechnic trumpeters who arrived at about the same age in the late '50s and who first made their talents known in Blakey's group. Even with a Harmon mute, on Ron Carter's "RJ," Marsalis suggests Hubbard's precise articulation. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis recalls Wayne Shorter's prefusion style, and Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams, featured on four tracks, pick up where they'd left off with Miles Davis and on numerous Blue Note dates. The music is taut, thoughtful, and filled with youthful bravado, but more fascinating still is how a leading-edge style of the '60s succumbed to fusion in the '70s only to return as a full-blown conservative movement in the next decade. --Stuart Broomer

"We running all over the world with a blunderbuss/And the Constitution all but forgot in the fuss," Wynton Marsalis declaims on "Where Y'All At?"--the raucous theatrical finale to From the Plantation to the Penitentiary. As unusual as it may be for the celebrated trumpeter to present himself as a kind of soap box rapper, underwhelmingly taking aim at "supercapitalists," liberals, and rappers alike, the most notable departure here is his prominent feature of a vocalist, young Jennifer Sanon. A winner of the Essentially Ellington high school competition, she has real appeal and is smart, silky-toned, and calmly assured beyond her 21 years. The influence of the mighty Abbey Lincoln is felt in both the directness of her delivery and the soulful expansiveness of the music, performed by a quintet. Though Marsalis gets his time in the spotlight, playing with brittle strength as well as his customary warmth, he is generous in shining a spotlight on his bandmates, including a pair of talented up-and-comers in pianist Dan Nimmer and bassist Carlos Henriquez, drummer Ali Jackson, Jr. and saxophonist Walter Blanding, who, 15 years after being introduced on the "Tough Young Tenors" album and in spite of his stellar contributions to Marsalis' Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, doesn't get the attention he should. --Lloyd Sachs

5 out of 5 stars Masterful.......2007-06-16

If you want masterful jazz that uses the spoken word to give voice to tough social commentary, then this album is for you. Marsalis is a border-crosser. He is comfortable on the frontiers of jazz, the many flavors of pop, classical, etc. etc. And now he is speaking from a conscience that can be as smooth or incisive, direct or elliptical, passionate or cool, funky or cerebral as his music.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious.......2007-06-06

Dear Mr. Marsalis,

You badly need a lesson in learning to make sincere and warm music. You are a product of the establishment. You are so obsessed with grandstanding projects that you continue to overlook the fundamentals. It has probably made you finaicially wealthy but musically depraved.

Please please please take lessons from Terence Blanchard, Roy Hargrove, Marcus Printup or even Christian Scott to name a few. Talk less and listen and practise more.

I have not forgotten your scurillous remarks in the 1980s of the late Miles Davis's foray into modern electronic pop jazz. It was naive and ignorant. If it was not for Mr. Miles, you would not have found your opportunity to blow your horn(for want of a better expression). Your recent recording shows that you have not changed.

4 out of 5 stars Different........2007-05-13

The bright New Orleans optimism of Wynton Marsalis has darkened significantly since the Bush administration allowed his flooded hometown to stew in its soggy ruins.
Blending his eloquent trumpet with the alto voice of Jennifer Sanon, Walter Blandings's tenor sax and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's rhythm section, Marsalis takes a harder look at the black man's progress in the Land of the Free.
Paced with swing, Charleston, shuffle, Latin and Motown beats, his new suite paints sardonic pictures of the "tattered ragmen" of America, bypassed by super-capitalism and marginalised into a world of drugs, prostitution and street crime.
Moulded with controlled anger and subtle dissonances, the songs have a bitter beauty.
"Plantation/Penitentiary" is an object lesson in how to expand the range of small-group jazz.
Wynton's knowledge of the jazz tradition is absolute, but the interest here lies in his integration of other Afro-American forms like Motown, and, gulp, rap.
The basic concept is the Afro-American's place in history, and its achievement is to turn rage into majesty.
Generous spirited and open, with impeccable ensemble blowing and superb singing by Jennifer Sanon, the high point is the rap, "Where Y'all At?"
Wynton stands revealed, suprisingly, as an angry radical, measuring the limits of his confinement.

5 out of 5 stars one of his best works so far.......2007-05-12

I've been listening to wynton since i was in 6th grade, and this is by far one of my favorites. Some people have said that he should'nt be making political statements in his music. Why should he not be able to, but mingus and a great number of other jazz musicians be able to? His statements are clear and make sense, and are real issues, whether we want to admit it or not. The music on this album is wonderful, it blends many styles and grooves. the solos are wonderful, and wynton sounds better than ever. i really have no complaints about this one.

5 out of 5 stars Makes selecting your wedding music easy!.......2007-03-27

This CD includes a nice selection of classical wedding music. When I ordered, I had no idea of what music I wanted or even how to select appropriate music. The accompanying guide breaks down each part of the ceremony and makes it easy to select the right song(s), from the prelude to the postlude, and everything in between. It even includes tips for music during the ceremony, if you so desire. Worth buying even if you plan to hire a DJ!

5 out of 5 stars A blast of brass.......2005-08-18

I first encountered this on cassette, quite by accident. It later became the background for my work at morning at the easel painting watercolours. But this is no wallpaper music. The technical genius of matching separate recordings of different trumpet parts is surpassed only by Marsalis's bright and lively technique. The masters would be pleased. As for the watercolours, I can now stand before them and see the music's influence on paper. Well worth the listening...

5 out of 5 stars Old school Wynton.......2005-08-12

This cd features a lot of Wynton's earlier piccolo playing, which, while perhaps not as brilliant as you'd hear on his Gabriel's Garden album, is slightly more refined and appropriate to the repertoire. That isn't to say he doesn't embellish; The Fasch concerto has some tastefully inserted ornaments. "Let the Bright Seraphim" is as well played with soprano Edita Gruberova as it is in Wynton's later recording with Kathleen Battle. The Purcell selections on the album are probably the best examples of good piccolo playing I've found, particularly the trills. One only need listen to the "Entrada" to see how delicate and refined the playing on the whole album is.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous.......2003-09-28

Marsalis' prodigious talent coupled with the greatest of Baroque brass composers is a combination that cannot be beat! Of course, Anthony Newman takes everything (less the slow stuff, of course) at his characteristic "lively" pace, but Marsalis keeps up. His execution of the ornamentation is awesome! Gotta have this one!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing talent.......2001-04-22

Without doubt, the birthday ode to Queen Anne (Eternal Source of Light Divine) is one of the loveliest pieces ever. Couple that with two of the most accomplished talents in the world, you have a near spiritual moment. Even those with even a passing interest in the classics will find this a stirring expierence. this is true candy for the ear and food for the soul.

Amazon.com essential recording

As the title implies, this is a relaxed and intimate date much in the manner of those ages-old "for lovers only" discs that celebrated the romance and melody of jazz expression. The tempos are generally in the slow to medium range, and the moods are lovingly rendered. Wynton Marsalis's songbook here is strictly standard and classic, ranging from "You Don't Know What Love Is" to Thelonious Monk's "Crepuscule with Nellie" and "When Its Sleepy Time Down South," to a closing nod to Crescent City-street classicism, "Bourbon Street Parade." Employing a variety of mutes and expressive effects, Marsalis renders this program with simple piano, bass, and drum accompaniment for the most part, though tenor saxman Todd Williams and alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson join him for two selections. --Willard Jenkins

talk about getting into the mood for intimacy... WOW... bring on the soft light and champagne...

5 out of 5 stars Superb Album.......2005-03-30

This, the 2nd in his concept album series is excellent, the sounds are played with such a level of intimacy and warm romance that not only does it stand out a wonderful jazz album in its own right but also can be used to set the mood for that special dinner!

The playing is lovely, the warm timbre casting you back to the very birth of jazz and evokes nothing but the deepest of emotion and highest praise for Mr. Marsalis and to think he was not yet at his prime on this album!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a great tool for trumpet students.......2003-04-27

This CD was early on a part of my jazz listening, and as a jazz trumpet player, I inadvertently picked up a bunch of style and technical elements from wynton's playing. Wynton is a traditionalist, but by using a stand up bass instead of a tuba he really transcends a time scale in his pieces and defies categorization. His use of articulation as an element of swing is textbook. If you play the trumpet, and you want to know how to play jazz, then pick this up. Bourbon Street Parade especially is the most textbook New Orleans swing chart i've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Wynton at his Best.......1998-08-16

I heard this CD for the first time in the cabin of a sailboat anchored in a cove at night. It is classic Wynton and classic jazz. Very dreamy and romantic. Sit back, sip your favorite wine and gaze at the stars with your lover while listening to this.

5 out of 5 stars World's best trumpet player.......2007-05-12

The incredible Wynton Marsalis plays the classics of the brass solo genre.
If you want to hear some very delightful music played by a most impressive instrumentalist, get this album.

Listening to this will make you realize the mediocrity of most of today's popular music. They don't grow people like Jean-Baptiste Arban any more.

5 out of 5 stars Credit Wynton Marsalis.......2007-01-25

This outstanding collection of turn-of-the-last-century cornet solos is a collector's item. Mr. Marsalis (and the ensemble) makes it all sound so easy and enjoyable. As an instrumental music teacher I find hearing these inspires many of my high school high brass players to work on them.

3 out of 5 stars stylistically wrong.......2005-05-29

Having studied with an international authority on cornet playing I can con fidently say that Wynton's cornet playing is ok at best. More than anything hes tryying to sell CDs rather than capture the essence of Cornet playing, like most of wyntons playing its alot of flash but no substance. Great if your a trumpet head and you get off on empty virtuostic fluff.

5 out of 5 stars Wynton, Wynton, Wynton........2005-01-01

There are times, when I'm listeing to Wynton, I get depressed like the flash of a 64th note played. His sounds is so pure and wonderful. He rocks. I don't mind realizing that there aren't many other trumpeteers out there like him.

I met him once actually. In Alice Tully Hall, after a holiday concert. He stood on the stage towering over my dad, brother and I. He called us "the frontline", after my dad telling him we play the trumpet, trombone, and clarinet. What a cool guy.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best.......2004-11-28

Marsalis is an excellent trumpet player, there is no question as to that. He is certainly not the best in the world, however. I prefer a better recording of Carnival of Venice and many other cornet solos by Gerard Schwarz. The spirit of such solos is lost when they are put to ensemble accompaniment, Schwarz interprets them far better in my opinion. Also, his technical mastery is at least equal to that of Wynton's, or was when he made the album. His sound is sweeter and more perfect to my ear. And this is not the only album in which you can hear dazzling technical pieces, either. Sergei Nakariakov, Rafael Mendez, and Allen Vizzutti are the most proficient players with recordings out there. Nakariakov and Mendez both do better readings of the Paganini, playing the entire song double-tonguing and circular breathing. The Mendez Flight of the Bumblebee has a much better sound and fits the piece more, too. The most amazing song I have ever heard is the Carnival of Venus, by Vizzutti. Listen to anything by Wynton and then this song, you will be absolutely amazed. The last variation of the Marsalis is Vizzutti's first, and they get harder from there. Simply put, this is a good recording and the most accessible, but there are better ones out there. I wouldn't buy this to hear cornet solos or amazing technical pieces, but for hearing other interpretations. I prefer Schwarz, Mendez, Vizzutti, and Nakariakov.

5 out of 5 stars Trumpet come alive.......2007-02-22

I love this cd! Wynton makes his trumpet talk as if it were alive. The Seductress is a beautiful peice with just trumpet and piano. All I can say is that I never get tired of listening to this cd. I love the combo. of jazz and classical.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......2005-09-30

I don't have a lot of music critic vocabulary but I am life long lover of music, studied intensely for most of my collegiate career and I can say that this collection of songs represents some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth and elegant.......2002-12-22

This is music for an elegant Saturday night. The up-tempo numbers are relaxed and friendly; the ballads are pieces you'd want to have on hand for seducing someone. Marsalis' soulful, often muted trumpet sounds as good as always, and he's joined for perfectly thoughtful, understated piano accompaniment by father Ellis. A lovely gem of an album.

5 out of 5 stars Oh yea, what that guy from Holland said.......2002-03-09

Here I am; a middle aged white guy from Tennessee. I HATE jazz! Or so I thought. My favorite "easy listening" station played "Where or When" from this album and I knew I had to have it. Now, unlike the music fan from Holland, I wouldn't know a long note from a tinkling arpeggio; and I don't care. What I do know is that this album is absolutely beautiful. I listened to it 4 straight times when it first arrived...and it just gets smoother each time. Somehow, it doesn't seem fair to catagorize music like this into a genre. There is something here for almost everyone. If I had to pick one selection that would be my least favorite it would be "I Got A Right To Sing The Blues". Otherwise....everything is GOLD ! And now if anyone asks me if I like jazz, I can just say "yup, I shore do!"

5 out of 5 stars So sweet, so sublime.......2001-11-19

My wife and I have enjoyed a cassette of this recording for more than ten years. It has travelled many miles, going along in the car and shifting up and down the stairs from bedroom to living room. Just as I was getting worried that the dynamics were becoming rather flat, I find the CD!
The reason I love this CD is that it conveys the warm relationship Wynton has with his father, and the intimacy can be heard on every long note, every tinkling arpeggio. Unlike Wynton's many other works, in which virtiousity and speed appear to be most paramount, this date was quiet and laid back. The trumpet sings gently throughout, and the space it leaves is the space for lovers to nestle and cuddle.
It is a mark of masterly that these two musicians could be so economical and yet reach the listener with so much power and conviction.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! .......2007-05-31

Spectacular display of brilliance and harmony. Truly, two masters of their respective disciplines melding together to display flawless virtuosity. Wynton Marsalis not only tames the piccolo beast, but somehow expertly mimics the human voice. And not just any voice, but the bright edgeless tone of Kathleen Battle. If you love Baroque, at any level, this is a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars My Birthday Present to me.......2007-05-29

Actually, I was driving and I heard it on the radio. Luckily, the radio station has a website to see what played at what time. After getting goose bumps listening to the little I did on my birthday, I knew I had to have it. Its since been downloaded on my ipod. If you want to feel uplifted, and joyous listen to this wonderful CD . Kathleen Battles voice and Wynton Marsalis trumpet playing is phenominal. My favorites are the last 7 or 8 cuts of the CD especially.

What an amazing voice this woman has. Pairing her with Wynton Marsalis was a match made in musical heaven.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2007-01-05

I heard cuts from this CD on the radio one early Sunday morning last year. Mesmerized, I ordered it and continue to be zoned out on this incredibly beautiful music masterfully executed by Marsalis and Battle.

5 out of 5 stars Battle and Marsalis scintillating and stunning.......2006-12-28

The making of this album was filmed in a wonderful documentary that brings to the fore the vulnerability and humanity of both artists. Marsalis and Battle are close friends, and the album itself is clearly a labor of love; Marsalis, who stopped performing classical trumpet in the late 80's, returned to the form when Battle was ready to make this recording.

The album is packed with regal music and royal performances. Bach's 51st cantata is particularly captivating, what with its technical demands and relentless pace. But Battle and Marsalis are able to derive strength and energy from one another in the film - through the difficult preparation process of confronting its daunting technical minefield - to realize a stunning result.

Bravo! Their contribution to the recorded corpus here is sublime.

Wynton Marsalis may not have an easily recognizable or even particularly handsome tone, but this erstwhile jazz trumpeter is an amazing virtuoso with a fine sense of classical style. If you've never owned/heard any of his classical CDs, and you love (mostly baroque) trumpet music, this compilation--a sort of "greatest hits"--is for you. From such cruddy, sensationalistic works as Carnival of Venice to the glories of Haydn's E-Flat Concerto, this is grand entertainment. Marsalis is joined by Kathleen Battle in an exciting version of Handel's "Let the bright seraphim," and the treat there is doubled. A fine piece by Hovhaness for trumpet and organ, never before released, is another surprise. Come listen to the endless, seemingly casual roulades that come out of this guy's trumpet--they'll wake you right up. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-10-31

Classic Wynton is the most glorious display of musicianship I have ever heard. No other trumpet player even comes close to Wynton. Don't listen to anything the editorial review says though, it must have been written by a complete ignoramus. Wynton Marsalis not having a clear or recognizable tone? Please...That's like saying Kobe Bryant isn't a good shooter. I can't believe that garbage is on a credible site such as Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Heard this with NEW appreication................2006-09-07

This is such a wonderful mix. I especially love the Haydn concerto finale in E flat. I was listening to this cd when my grandson (almost 3) heard the glorious music of the trumpet for the first time. He loved seeing the photos of Mr. Marsalis (which I embellished, albeit true, saying how difficult it is to play the trumpet - hence the need for a handerchief to wipe his brow in one of the photos). This awakened his awareness of trumpet music where he now loves to listen to one of his Baby Einstein cd's in the car. Specifically, he told his mother "louder" when the trumpet piece was played - repetetively.

5 out of 5 stars Wynton's the best.......2006-03-17

I'm not a professional musician and don't have a trained ear but Wynton Marsalis has provided me with a very delightful hour of extremely good music.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Wynton--brilliant, clear trumpet renditions.......2006-02-25

For anyone who loves trumpet music as I do, this album is a must. Wynton Marsalis has mastered twenty all-time favorite pieces with such brilliance, that no other trumpeteer comes near by comparison. Opening with J. Clarke's, The King's March, Wynton proceeds to favor listeners with such baroque favorites as Purcell's Entrada from "The Indian Queen," J. Clark's The Prince of Denmark's March and J. Stanley's Trumpet Voluntary. Fantastic selections from Bach, Mozart, and Haydn follow, with the album also including such delightful listening as The Last Rose of Summer, Carnival of Venisee, and Flight of the Bumblebee. You won't be disappointed with this purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Classical Wynton.......2005-07-22

Signature Wynton!! A wonderful grouping of masterfully performed trumpet literature. A "must have" for any trumpet performer. As expected, Wynton displays his virtuosity in a marvelously enjoyable collection of the trumpets finest works. Among these crown jewels of performance, "Moto Perpetuo" is a blazing display of his virtuosity. A wonderful album. I never tire listening to it.

Amazon.com essential recording

Much has been made of Wynton Marsalis's early-career emulation of the prefusion Miles Davis quintet, an obvious homage that only the most blinkered apologists have refused to ackowledge. Marsalis has accomplished so much on his own that the out-and-out tribute to the classic Davis lineup that "Black Codes..." represents should be seen as a positive step in the remarkable development of an artist rather than an act of fraud. This is sublime music by the first Marsalis quintet, led by Wynton on trumpet and featuring brother Branford on soprano and tenor sax, Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums, Charnett Moffet on bass and Kenny Kirkland on piano. All of these musicians would go on to greater heights, but they're in the zone here. --John Swenson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Yee-hah...Wynton smokes 'em.......2006-10-31

It's maybe not too original, the last tune sounds almost identical to something Miles recorded around 1954 for Prestige (forget what it's called) where they turned down the lights in the studio so they'd get that "after-hours," chairs-stacked-on-the-tables feel, but this is still a smoker of an album, played with such passion that Watts and Kirkland in particular sound like they're about to explode at any moment.

While the concept for this album is none too original, the jamming is fresh and exciting. Wynton plays some of the most intense trumpet of his career, and while he never sounds completely spontaneous, the others around him are having enough of a blast to make up for his cool demeanor. Brother Branford is smoothness to Wynton's jagged edges, although at times in his Black Codes solo he starts to channel Conference of the Birds a little. Kirkland is so stunning one grows sad knowing what a loss to jazz his death has been. This was the debut album of Charnett Moffett, all of 16 at the time, but you wouldn't know it because he plays like an old veteran. And Jeff "Tain" Watts...well, you wonder how many arms he has.

There are no weak tracks on this set, though some of the arrangements maybe sound a *little* dated now (For Wee Folks stands out, with that airy soprano and whooshy cymbalwork that was so popular at the time). The best compositions include the title tune and especially Delfeayo's Dilemma, a great piece that should be a standard. Also notable is the incredibly naturalistic sound on the disc. The drums in particular sound airy and spacious as I've rarely heard before or since. I wonder why with subsequent albums the boxy, constricted sound so loved by milti-miking producers came back in. Do they really think that sounds better than this?

I'm not WM's biggest fan, but here everything came out right. I was hoping, when I heard this back in 1985, that this was the start of a powerful new direction. One can see at this distance it wasn't as "new" as it seemed then, and it didn't turn out to be the declaration of independence that it might have seemed like at the time. But it's still a fine album that will get your pulse pounding--at least!

5 out of 5 stars Wynton's most important single album set.......2005-07-28

Wynton Marsalis is so heavily documented and so heavily opinionated these days that it's difficult to assess his work fairly. For everyone who thinks he single-handedly saved acoustic jazz in the 80s, another will say he is killing its creativity and radical spirit in the 2000s. Certainly I've wavered on this issue over time. Whatever your opinion on Wynton, Black Codes is the strongest of his early albums, before he took to preserving the jazz tradition. More than any of the other albums Black Codes strives to advance it.

The band on here is great. This was before Branford left to join Sting and the heads to the tunes are tight. Jeff Watts is a phenomenal drummer and Wynton shares the spotlight by using "Chambers of Tain" as a drum feature. Kenny Kirkland drives many of the vamps on this album and comps assertively and the bass player strongly anchors these tunes as well.

This album plays well start to finish and has some of Wynton's strongest writing. "Black Codes" with its low end piano as part of the head, "For Wee Folks" with its out of tempo opening and "Delfeayo's Dilemma", a tune that has been covered by artists like Kenny Garrett, are highlights in the set. Wynton nods to the tradiiton by concluding with a blues as well.

The innovations on this album are subtle. It's more a summary of two splendid jazz ensembles: the tight ensembles of the Jazz Messengers that Branford and Wynton played with early in their careers and the thorny modal improvisations of the Miles Davis Quintet. Some people focus only on Miles when assessing this album, but if you listen to Jazz Messengers albums like Mosaic and Free For All you hear how the discipline of this music and the vigor of Tain's playing are more assertive than the cool effortlessness of Miles' group.

I don't listen to all of Wynton's stuff so much now but I've enjoyed this album and I strongly recommend it as a high point of jazz in the decade of the '80s.

3 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2005-05-19

When I first played this I was reminded more of VSOP from the 70s than straight 60s Miles (there is an obvious chain there). Try VSOP "The Quintet."

5 out of 5 stars Not JUST Solid.......2005-04-12

Honestly, even if this was a complete rip off of Miles' work, which it clearly isn't, the group is stunning enough. I mean, Joe Henderson made a TRIBUTE ALBUM to Miles and it also won two grammys (and pretty much deserved them), and no one gave him any problems. No one will doubt that this quintet with Branford, Wynton, Kenny Kirkland, Tain Watts, and Moffet, was one of the best of the 1980s, and this album, as I and most others contend, this is probably their definitive album. Yet, I don't think really think this was a homage album to Miles Davis. If it was, Wynton probably would have brought direct attention to it. Clearly, Wynton's trumpet playing is definitely influenced by Miles 1960s work, but not solely. Yet other than that, I really don't any real obvious similarities between 65-68 Miles Quintet and this work, and trust me, I know Miles' work from that period very well. Really, the only copying going on related to "Black Codes From the Underground" was by critics who didn't know any better than to call the album an advance in Miles' music if they liked Wynton, or to call it a rip off of Miles if they didn't like him. I think a lot of these critics were either jaded by the extremely rapid acoustic jazz revival of the 1980s, or just didn't know much about the musical details of jazz and made a swift, dumb assumption according to other critics' views. Trust me, this should be one of, if not your first Wynton album. It is a group of great improvisers and complete musicians at their tightest, and at least for me, evokes a great amount of emotion. Also, despite what some say, this is a highly creative effort.

5 out of 5 stars oh lord.......2004-01-05

First off, comparing this album to Miles is absurd; it would be like comparing Monet to Fleming; both geniuses, but 2 different time frames, eras, periods and concepts.

Black Codes is pure modern jazz energy at its most urban, refined, freshest, sophisticated and complex; it IS a seminal album because it provides the natural evolution and continuation of a hard bop movement that seemed to be floundering a bit in the late 70's, always seeming to have to fight the mediocre commercialism and superficialness that was plauging not only the music scene, but American culture then, and still today.

Dark, moody, hip, furious, dissonant, deep---very deep, ahhh, there simply aint' enough adjectives. But if words are meaningless, then how about one sustained goose bump of pure reverie and jazz joy when digging this album?

What is especially astounding are the virtuoso performances of an absolutely sick, monstrous rhythm section, and the horn and saxophone blowing which is a reflection of the best of improvisational recording during the last fifty years. I agree with the reviewer: don't walk, run and get it. It belongs next to Miles, Clifford, Coltrane and Bird, but put this one last (or latest) in the line-up.

Wynton Marsalis's century-closing series of jazz and classical recordings isn't nearly the pulse-quickening excursion one might expect, what with all the fanfare and all the years the vaunted trumpeter has spent in the limelight. That said, his nod to Jelly Roll Morton is probably one of the better Marsalis recordings available. It's got enough rules built in--compositional economy, instrumental variation, etc.--that it disciplines the trumpeter's more ambitious tendencies. In the liner notes, Marsalis describes Morton dually as a jazz intellectual and a streetwise hustler, and anyone familiar with Morton will know the characterization is apt. Marsalis's read of Morton, however, skips the street hustle and instead focuses on cleanly drawn portraits that amount to fine repertory pieces, works akin to chamber music in their ultimate impact. That's not so much of a putdown as it might seem, as African-American composers are so rarely treated the way European and Euro-American composers are. Morton knew this and wrote his way around it, much as Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus did. And Jelly Roll's stomping-good-time melodies are here to show his knowledge of both his audience and his compositional chops. But if you're expecting something innovative or hair-raising in the way of Marsalis rediscovering an untapped Jelly Roll vein, you'll be greeted instead with full-bore, horn-rich charts that swing strongly. And that ain't half bad. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Reference level recording.......2007-01-12

I am an audio dealer, manufacturer, and enthusiast and a friend introduced this redbook CD to me. I ended up purchasing 6 or 7 more Wynton Marsalys' Standard Time, Vol. 6: Mr. Jelly Lord CDs. I kept one and sent the others to customers, friends, and industry insiders. The music is exciting and the recording quality is reference level. Depending on one's system, this CD can exhibit a very dynamic, exciting, and very real sense of liveliness. Several others have claimed to use it as one of their reference recordings to demonstrate their system's sonic presentation to customers and associates.

I've since purchased several more of the very talented Wynton Marsalis' CDs and have found nearly equal musical excitement and and engineering in these CDs as well.

One of my favorites and a must have.

Since the liner notes insist that all jazz is "modern", you'd think Marsalis & Co. would try to put some fresh spin on Jelly Roll's compositions, or at least capture the nuances of the original sides. But no, this is just corny Dixieland oom-pah mush, the stuff tourists hear at Disney World. To appreciate Mr. Morton you will do much better with his original recordings. As Linus screamed to Lucy: "Great art should not be smushed up!"

5 out of 5 stars UNDERATED IS THE APT WORD--CLASSIC IS ANOTHER.......2005-02-13

I am "knocked-out" and down....floored. This CD will be a classic among classics, and it ".....proves that all jazz is modern"---Stanley Crouch's linernotes

I still can't believe I actually bought something from Wynton Marsalis. I never thought I would purchase something from a "new" jazz artist (I listen to all jazz, mainly Duke Ellington, Sam Rivers, Albert Ayler, Elvin Jones, Charles Mingus), but my love for New Orleans music is great, so I figured I give this a shot. Damm, these guys are all from New Orleans and it sounds like it. These guys play these song PERFECTLY, there is no "nostalgia" or any other negatives other than the ocassional alto sax solos which dont really fit in as well as plunger muted tumped, trombone, soprano, and the huge vibrato of New Orleans clarinet. These songs by Jelly Roll were perfect to start and they are taken with care and joy. They actually capture the feel of the original recordings, like Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives and Sevens. Wynton may be anoying, pretenious, stuck up, ect., But he can play a hell of a trumpet (whatever that means) and his group is killer.

I purchased the minidisc version of this album, and I must say that it is simply astounding. I cannot get enough of this album. The performances are simply superb. If you are looking for an execellent traditional jazz album, to add to your collection, this one is highly recommended.
