Think "Pat Metheny trio record" and you'll probably recall his groundbreaking Bright Size Life or the more abstract Rejoicing (with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins) or even Question and Answer (Dave Holland, Roy Haynes). Well, keep thinking. Trio 99-00 is the popular guitarist-composer's most straight-ahead, no-muss, no-fuss recording yet. Recorded over two days with the remarkable team of drummer Bill Stewart and bassist Larry Grenadier, Trio 99-00 covers much compositional and stylistic ground but is essentially a hard-bop-tinged blowing session. Metheny's Sonny Rollins-ish originals include "(Go) Get It," "Soul Cowboy" (featuring amazing chordal guitar), "What Do You Want?" and a blazing trio variation on "Lone Jack," which appeared on the first Pat Metheny Group album. Unusual choices are made throughout: a sensually swinging "Giant Steps," an elegant "A Lot of Livin' to Do," and inclusion of Wayne Shorter's queasy gem, "Capricorn." And as always, Pat can't help but get sentimental on acoustic guitar, culminating in the first studio rendition of "Travels." This isn't for the faint-hearted, nor those waiting for another PMG travelogue like We Live Here or Letter from Home. This is pure jazz slam, a trio showdown with the gloves off. --Ken Micallef

Schubert's two piano trios are the products of his last years when, knowing that he was ill and dying, he still managed to produce dozens of songs and chamber music masterpieces, as well as pursue counterpoint studies and make plans for further orchestral and stage works. Add to this the earlier String Trio and a couple of miscellaneous single movements, and his output in "trio" form is complete. Both of the piano trios are typically large works, generously stuffed with first-rate tunes, some of which you may recognize without knowing exactly where they came from. These excellent performances at a "twofer" price offer the most convenient and cost effective way to get to know this marvelous music. --David Hurwitz

A wonderful collection of music spanning from the Baroque to the Modern and so Affordable. Each CD is in a full size jewel-case with beautiful cover art - paintings of Renaissance-era angels in muted, slightly reflective, metal-tone inks - all within a box that ties them all together. There are no liner notes in the booklet, just track listings, but the music speaks for itself. clearly have wax in their ears/speakers. Through a high fidelity system of any reasonable quality, these recordings sound warm, glorious, superb. And, of course, these compositions are performed in a manner that matches their quality. Among Schubert's best works, in my opinion.

This recording of Schubert's two piano trios (the only two he wrote) is a real joy. Three masters of the trade provide a classy, lively, lyrical performance that is just full of enthusiasm and gusto (especially the B flat D898).

I admit that I have not heard the two higher-priced recordings recommended by Gramophone, but I'd be very surprised if anyone could top this performance. This is one of my most frequently played CD sets -- for good reason. [I say much the same about the Mozart Piano Quartets recording on Naxos, for the same reasons.]

ASHKENAZYS KEYBOARD TEMPO IS PERFECT AND ZUKERMANS PLAYING IS WARM AND BRILLIANT. HARRELLS CELLO SOUNDS RICH AND FULL. FANS OF STANLEY KUBRICKS FILM BARRY LYNDON WILL RECALL HIS USE OF THE SECOND MOVEMENT OF THE E FLAT MAJOR IN THE DELIBERATELY PACED DRAWING ROOM SCENES. THE MUSIC FIT PERFECTLY. THE SLOW MOVEMENT THEME RETURNS IN THE FINAL MOVEMENT TO CONTRAST WITH A ROCKING, LIVELY ALLEGRO. THE B FLAT MAJOR OPENS WITH A BEETHOVEN LIKE HEROIC THEME AND IS FOLLOWED BY ONE OF SCHUBERTS MOST EXPRESSIVE MELODIES. A BOUNCY SCHERZO IS THEN FOLLOWED BY A WELL CONSTRUCTED RONDO THAT IS A FINE ENDING TO A GREAT PIECE OF MUSIC. BUYING THESE TOGETHER IN THIS TWO CD CASE IS BEST. THEY WERE ALWAYS SPLIT UP TILL NOW. Music for Thinking should be considered a MUST HAVE!! The recordings are beautiful, and can be played continuosly in the backgroung while you are writing, reading, or studying. I find Music for Thinking to be VERY effective and can be played all day long. I use this CD to create a condusive study and work environment!

A nice sound, not enough clarity.......2000-07-11

If you are looking for something to make you think at a higher level, then this is not your album. The music on this CD is familiar to anyone who enjoys classical music. And I will admit that it does provide the correct setting for focusing on a task. I only wish that the clarity of the recording was more pure. The first time that I played this CD I wondered if my equalizer had been bumped; the songs sounded flat. In any event, if you are looking for a nice blend of classical music, something to provide a calm atmosphere, this is an excellent choice.

More than 70 years have passed since the Cortot-Thibaud-Casals trio waxed the Schubert B flat and Beethoven Archduke trios. Both recordings were hailed as classics in the early days of electrical recording and have enjoyed numerous incarnations on LP and CD. Even if you already own these performances, you honestly haven't heard them until you experience these new restorations. The effect is not unlike washing your eyeglasses. All the surface snap, crackle, and swish has been tamed, but more room tone emerges along with long-buried, intermingling overtones from all three instruments. There's more tempo fluctuation than modern ears may be accustomed to, along with Thibaud's slippery portamentos. Yet these devices are channeled toward specific expressive ends. Mannered they may seem, but indulgent, never. And listeners used to Cortot's freewheeling approach to solo repertoire will be surprised at how much he behaves himself in a chamber music context. Write, petition, call, beg, cajole, do anything to induce EMI to bring out the remainder of this trio's recorded output in equally amazing transfers. --Jed Distler

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

From the opening note of Bob James's lyrically romantic "Mind Games" to the closing jam on Mongo Santamaria's "Watermelon Man," the Casino Lights are shining bright. George Duke, Kenny Garrett, Kirk Whalum, Boney James, Rick Braun, Larry Carlton, and Gabriela Anders constitute an awesome smooth-jazz lineup here, with Anders's smoky harmonies shining especially alongside Duke on the title track from his classic album Brazilian Love Affair and on her silky hot "Fire of Love." Even trumpet honker Braun, musically way over his head in this company, manages to push the smooth-jazz envelope. The first Casino Lights album, recorded on the same Montreux Jazz Festival stage and released in 1989, was a vocal heavy effort that pales in comparison with this recording, dominated as it is by crafty instrumentalists playing a bit of inspired one-upmanship on each other with the listener turning out to be the winner. The superlatives abound, from the packaging to the selections, which include covers of Ronnie Laws's "Always There," Eddie Harris's "Cold Duck Time," and Fourplay doing a tour de force on Miles Davis's "Four." Smooth Jazz Classic.......2000-12-18

Excellent 2-CD set! A must have for everyone's smooth jazz collection. I liked disk 2 marginally better than disk 1, but both are great! It's Boney James, Rick Braun, Kirk Whalen, Gabriela Anders, Fourplay et al at their best in a live setting. I also recommend the original Casino Lights (1982) with Al Jarreau, Randy Crawford et al. If you can find it, you'll like this one as much as the current release.

Great stuff, but allow for the age of the recordings.......2002-03-29

I'm glad I never encountered this Archduke trio recording in an LP transfer. A couple of generations of listeners were probably frightened away from pre-stereo recordings by inadequate transfer technology. I read somewhere this performance is "justly famous" but "miserably recorded". We are indeed fortunate in the digital era that the best restorer and transfer expert of recordings of the pre-tape era, Ward Marston, has had a hand in the Artur Rubinstein series. What you have in the Beethoven is a decent recording from 1941, after Mr. Marston's transfer. One should perhaps mute the upper frequencies more than usual, as this will eliminate anything remaining that might distract from the music. So you have before you an Archduke trio of legend and a most satisfying musical experience. The Schubert is not the Opus 100 that is perhaps more famous, but the Opus 99 trio. The recording seems to find the original masters perhaps less worn and therefore clearer and warmer. But this is all "essential" stuff for admirers of these artists. I plan to keep this recording of the Archduke trio as my primary one.
