Editorial Reviews
From the Label
The title, a phrase coined by Scofield's daughter, is the guitarist's typically witty take on the distinctive approach he had achieved with the quartet that included Robert Aries on keyboards, bassist Gary Grainger and drummer Dennis Chambers. To add to the fun, former boss George Duke was called in to take keyboard solos on six tracks. This album is most indicative of what Scofield achieved during his Gramavision years.

Product Description

Discovered 30 years after its master tapes were thought to be lost, Frank Foster and The Loud Minority's "Well Water" (Piadrum) finds the two-time Grammy Award winning tenor saxophonist, composer, arranger and jazz educator leading a roaring big band performing his own compositions and those of Clifford Brown, Elvin Jones and Frank's brother-in-law, David Jones. A former member of Count Basie's orchestra (1953-1964) and Basie Band director (1986-1995), Frank Foster, who composed such Basie classics as "Shiny Stockings", "Blues In Hoss' Flat" , "Blues Backstage", "Back To the Apple" and "Four Five Six", is heard at an artistic peak on "Well Water", surrounded by 17 strongly supportive musicians in a clearly joyous and inspired performance. Recorded more than a decade before Foster took the helm of Count Basie's band, and shortly after he had been a member of Elvin Jones group, "Well Water" presents the sound of a forward thinking 1970s big band pushing the boundaries, with the legendary drummer firing the musicians to all-around great performances. Recorded on a blustery Manhattan weekend in the fall of '77 while a major hurricane threatened the City (and in between sessions for debut LPs from Blondie and the Ramones), "Well Water" documents a big band performing at the zenith of its powers as Foster and his 20-piece Loud Minority Big Band reveled in a thrilling atmosphere that is clearly felt and heard. After full restoration and remastering "Well Water" is finally ready for its proper unveiling. As an added bonus, the album's liner notes contain Foster's wonderfully detailed and vivid descriptions of the band member's contributions and interplay in the various album selections. "Well Water" is a double treasure, a historical document of a special weekend in 1977 and a thrilling testament to the talent, skill and perseverance of Frank Foster and The Loud Minority Big Band.

5 out of 5 stars TOP SHELF.......2007-05-26

I have not heard a better album in the past year. Charles Tolliver, take notes-- your new big band album is good, but Frank's is THE BOMB. And who is dropping the bomb?--none other than Mr. Jones himself. Elvin is in the driver's seat, constantly pushing and tastefully, musically contributing. The most musical drummer who ever was, co-piloting this remarkable session. The recording quality is superb-- hats off to the remastering team. Too many hilites to go into detail-- just get it. You gotta have this one. I've been playing it for a week straight now.
Whoever said jazz was dying (and big band in particular was done for) in the 70s was sorely mistaken. Check it out.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Too Much Fun!.......2007-01-07

DMHO is quickly becoming my favorite group. This album has big band/jazzy versions of Christmas standards as well as a few DMHO originals ("Frosty the Bluesman" is a scream). If you ever get to see this group live, it is a fun show. Amazing talent from a young group of guys. Every time I start to play this CD, my 3 year old son dances all over the kitchen. This is not my first Denver CD and it won't be my last!

5 out of 5 stars Feel Good Listening to this Christmas Music.......2005-12-11

I do not give many reviews because I hate to write, but after listening to DMHO in their Timeless Christmas CD, I feel overwhelmed to spread the Joy you will feel after listening, tapping your feet, and snapping your fingers to this new upbeat renditions of Christmas music. All 13 tracks are excellent and done in their own DMHO style. Here the traditional Jingle Bells, Most Wonderful Time Of The Year, Little Drummer Boy, Sleigh Ride, and Joy To The World done in pleasing new versions you never heard before. Little Drummer Boy is more than rum a bum dum, it swings. Like something blusey? Frosty The Bluesman is a horn blowing blue style that gives you feeling good. My favorite track is Jesus Child which starts out on the first note to get you dancing and hand waving and doing the Charleston. Its a little bit Dixie with six minutes of banjo and horns. If you want to hear joyous Christmas music, you will definitely love Timeless Christmas.

    5 out of 5 stars Foot-Tapping Mellow.......2001-12-08

This is relaxation music without the heavy melancholy. DeGrassi's acoustic mastery is complemented by lots of varied percussion, keyboards and even "body music." Most of the selections have a distinctively Latin flavor, although it is not overwhelmingly so. The music has the charachteristics of sailing on a sunny afternoon - it moves briskly, but at nature's pace. He also explores the blues with "Doorman's Blues," picked out in a Piedmont style.

The CD will make a nice addition to your music collection and is a good representation of DeGrassi's mid-career talent. It will go great with cocktails or just conversation.

It's been long overdue. The CD finally has arrived with the Mighty Burner "Charles Earland on the B-3 and pre Idris Muhammad "Leo Morris" on the drums. The two pieces that shine are "SnakeBone" and "Brother Soul" which were never re-recorded or done again by Lou Donaldson since he and Charles Earland parted ways.

5 out of 5 stars John Scofield - Loud Jazz.......2007-06-13

One of the Best Rhythm sections ever. Scofields playing is so dynamic, it seems like he's talking to you. Dennis Chambers plays a ton but never overshadows the leader.

4 out of 5 stars Listenable outside playing.......2002-10-27

Dennis Chamber's (drummer) playing on this recording is outstanding and almost is so good that it is hard to keep focus on John. John is one of the most accessible jazz guitarists who seems to keep both the fans of off the wall and outside licks and groove (fans) happy. This also features the first and probably the most outside rendition of the tune from THE WABASH CANNONBALL just called WABASH. If you do the analysis, it's really in there.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm a believer!.......2002-02-02

What can I say, this is a typical Scofield record--great band, tasteful, original writing, and fantastic guitar work(as usual). I'd give it a 10 if I could!

If your into modern jazz, check it out!

    4 out of 5 stars It's a killer!.......2001-06-28

This is jazz, heavy on the funk with a definite rock edge. Most importantly the songs are cool and not just a vehicle for soloing. Fusion in the 80's could be kind of cheesy, but have no fear with this disc it's one of his strongest.

    3 out of 5 stars hmmm, this is great 80s jazz/rock/stuff, but..........2000-02-13

not the most exciting guitar record, as anticipated. i grew up on the flashy electric guitars of the 80s virtuoso's and really dig a well thought out guitar based tune. this record just didn't tickle me like i thowt it would. the back up band is super tight as would be expected of scofield, but the bass is a little too slap-happy for my current tastes. the production/mixing is well done (you can hear everything), but sometimes you want to hear the gee-tar, and the busy-ness of the band is very distracting.

i definitely recommend checking out scofield's "A Go Go" record with Medeski, Martin and Wood as backup band. a much more interesting album with great licks, melodies, and of course smooth grooves.

      Amazon.com's Best of 2001

As with 1999's Respect box, which chronicled women recording artists, Rhino again attempts to capture and condense a mighty field with the six-CD Say It Loud! And again, it largely succeeds. A companion to the VH1 series of the same name, Say It Loud! tells one story and many. It covers the development of many related genres, the business of locking many outsize talents and personalities into the grooves of records, and the music as it mirrored a rustling, ever-changing society--that last underscored by the inclusion of spoken sound bites (everyone from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to Sammy Davis Jr.). But within these larger themes move many smaller but no less compelling tales. The roughly chronological programming allows for accidental, startling juxtapositions--disc one places Paul Robeson's pained, dignified reading of "Ol' Man River" just a few tracks away from bluesman Son House's insistence in "My Black Mama (Part 1)" that "there ain't no burnin' Hell." From there, pop ballads, big bands, bop, gospel, doo-wop, rock & roll, soul from Motown! Memphis! and Philly!, gorgeous civil-rights-era jazz, funk, and rap cohere and speak to one another in a selection about as good as can be expected given its length and various legal restrictions. (The most glaring omission is Stevie Wonder.) Any taint of "this stuff is good for you" is lost in the parade of great gifts, personalities, statements, dance crazes, poetry, and word games. If the above track listing contains lots of names you don't recognize, Say It Loud! will offer you a topnotch one-stop survey course. --Rickey Wright

      3 out of 5 stars a bit silly.......2005-12-05

Isn't this a bit silly? Black music is the basis for a lot, if not most, of the American music we cherish today. Limiting it to 6 CDs just seems disrespectful. It would take someone's entire collection to do justice to black music, which is American music itself, at its finest and most original.

5 out of 5 stars A History of Black Music in America.......2003-02-01

When I found this collection on Amazon.com, I nearly cried (okay, I did cry). This includes much that anyone who truly loves African American music could ever want. It's not only entertaining, it's educational. How pleased I was when it arrived that there were not only six exceptional CD's, but a beautiful book included also. Additionally, I love the excerpts of famous speeches and quotes, etc. that are included between songs. If you truly love R&B as well as it's roots, buy this compilation and be satisfied that this was money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars an absolute must have!!.......2002-08-04

To any black person who wants educate their child musically, this is a must have, yes there are some omissions, but the depth and breadth of the artists represented is astonishing. I will listen this with my child very often, as a history lesson.

      4 out of 5 stars What.....No Stevie????.......2002-02-13

Stevie Wonder has to be the epitome of stylistic uniqueness among song writers, African-American or otherwise. He is also one of the most proliferate, with a body of work that spans nearly 4 decades. The influence of his genius upon the music world is unquestionable. How, then, could this musical phenomenon been omitted from an otherwise outstanding collection?

3 out of 5 stars No James Brown???.......2002-01-18

They really have a History of Black Music Compilation and leave out James Brown? No James Brown? Uh...what's going on here? One of the most important figures in music of this century and he's excluded...for shame

4 out of 5 stars One of the best 90's British Groove bands!!.......2004-04-19

Agree with previous reviewers. I didn't succumb to Galliano's groove until they released their "Plot Thickens" album. This release finds them rehashing their genre-bending ways. The socio-eco-political lyrics aren't as obvious. They discreetly unfold with repeated listens. I found myself listening to these albums more-so with the tragic state of war that's become all the rage these last couple of years. Favorites include "Ease Your Mind", "Freefall", "Funny How", "Best Lives of Our Days" , "Roofing Tiles" and that bad ass interlude between 12 and 13 that the previous reviewer mentioned. I wish they remained together.
Rob(Red Zinger on the Tosca "Dehli 6"project) and Valerie have each released solo projects, collaborated on the Jazzanova album track "Mwela Mwela(Here I Am)" then reunited for the sophmore album by Two Banks of Four which is expensive but amazing!!!
