By mid-1944, Major Glenn Miller and his band, dubbed the American Band of the Allied Expeditionary Force, were stationed in England, maintaining a rigorous schedule of broadcasts and concerts to boost military morale. These two CDs of lost recordings come from six radio shows taped in October and November of that year for the American Broadcasting System in Europe. The shows were directed at German troops, and they're fascinating just as documents, whether Miller is struggling in halting German, describing the band as "a true picture of the great melting pot of America," or introducing a singer with "Sgt. Johnny Desmond, report to Ilse" (the show's announcer) for a rendition of "My Heart Tells Me" sung in German. But it's the quality of the music and the exceptional presence achieved in London's Abbey Road Studios that maintain interest. Miller's hits may have never sounded better, and arranger Jerry Grey is strikingly adroit at blending the big swing band with a full complement of string players on such tunes as "Begin the Beguine." --Stuart Broomer

In 1994 Cash stunned the music world with this commanding collection of 13 solo acoustic performances that roll from gospel to cowboy to sarcastic folk. Minimalism had long been Cash's meal ticket, but this time around, producer Rick Rubin stripped it all away, recording the bulk of the record in Cash's cabin or his own living room (two cuts were captured live at the Viper Room in front of an emphatic audience). Cash offers five typically direct and vivid originals, but he also seizes control of songs by Kris Kristofferson, Nick Lowe, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Loudon Wainwright. Forty years after "Hey Porter," Cash delivers a pure, naked, and incredibly moving record that, dare we say, rivals the impact of his greatest achievements. --Marc Greilsamer
Album Description
Out of print in the U.S.! Johnny Cash had already recorded some of the most important Country albums in the history of the genre, yet, although he was still making quality music throughout the '80s, record sales and label support were the lowest he'd ever experienced in his entire career. By the early '90s, he was without a label for the first time in four decades. Longtime fan, label owner and producer Rick Rubin stepped in, asked Johnny to return to his roots and together, they re-created the legend of the Man In Black. Features Cash performing his own compositions as well as songs from Loudon Wainwright, Leonard Cohen, Nick Lowe, Tom Waits and Glenn Danzig. American Recordings earned Johnny a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. A stunning return to form. Warner.

Cash does it again, and again and again..........2007-06-26
I suppose there is no need to write another review for a disc originally released over 13 years ago. Considering there have been over 90 reviews of this, the first American Recordings collaboration between Rubin and Cash, it seems a waste of time to write another.
With this in mind, much like the minimalist approach to this album, I will do the same with this review. This is simply among the very best albums of any genre, any era since the birth of rock and roll. Nowhere can you find a combination of haunting lyrics with a voice to match and a producer willing to keep his fingers off the controls.
It doesn't matter if you are a punk, emo, stoner, hippie, country fan, metalhead, death metal freak or a soccer mom. This is one of the few pieces of American music that can stand the test of time and truly reach any audience. Get this record!!!
Of course........2007-06-22
It's Johnny Cash, of course it gets 5 stars. Great collection from the Mater.
The Master's Comeback.......2007-05-14
This was the Man in Black's comeback album and it showed the world he was not done yet by a long shot. It introduced a whole new generation to his style of and method of music, and also got that new generation to discover his older works. No Cash collection is complete without this album.
classic americana........2007-04-10
1994, the start of something great: johnny cash's association with producer rick rubin. "american recordings," the 1st album in an amazing series is a masterpiece. just mr cash's stunning voice accompanied by a lone acoustic guitar. stark and beautiful, through and through. though mr cash has always been associated with country and western music (at least in my mind), this is american folk music, at a pinnacle of quality seldom grasped. things start off with a sunny little murder ballad, "delia's gone." she was a low-down trifling gal, so she had to die. and most of the songs that follow plumb the depths and explore the wreckage of america's dark-side. the dark parts of a man's soul. "the beast in me," is a bare, no frills tune about the singer's bad side. mr cash sings hauntingly and beautifully over a simple pattern of softly plucked notes on the guitar. it's one of this great albums many highlights. "drive on," is a fantastic vietnam veteran song, and is another highlight. the tim hardin classic, "bird on a wire," has never been better done than here. not to my knowledge. things begin to lighten a bit with track nine, a humorous live recording about some courtship and love, circa 1825, with a happy ending. the closing song is also a live track, "the man who couldn't cry," and another stab at humor that works very fine. this whole album is just a stunning piece of work. one of the best folk albums that i've ever heard. i rank it up there with my very favorite folk recording: jody stecher's "oh the wind and rain." these are both albums that no american music lover should miss. and life is fragile. who knows? an asteroid might hit the earth at any moment. i hear that we're due for such a thing. so get this music quick. don't die without having had the experience of hearing this.
Good, but not great.......2006-10-15
I love Johnny Cash, I love every edition of the American Recordings series, but this is the weakest of the series. Don't get me wrong, this is a good CD, I enjoy every minute of it, but if your're a Cash rookie, get the Essential Johnny Cash, this is for hardcore Cash fans like myself, but the Essential is awesome as well. For Classic Cash fans get the Man Comes Around before you get this. The first American Recordings, this one, good but not great.

Cy Coleman and David Zippel's City of Angels is a seductive depiction of 1940s Los Angeles, capturing swinging jazz, torchy ballads, witty lyrics, and even a Manhattan Transfer-like Greek chorus (arranged by ManTran guru Yaron Gershovsky). James Naughton and Gregg Edelman star as Stone and Stine, respectively a tough Raymond Chandleresque PI and the writer who dreams up his adventures. Randy Graff plays Stone's long-suffering secretary and Dee Hoty the requisite femme fatale. Loads of atmosphere and tasty songs such as "What You Don't Know About Women," "With Every Breath I Take," "You're Nothing Without Me," and "You Can Always Count on Me" make City of Angels a modern classic. It won 1990 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Leading Actor (Naughton), Featured Actress (Graff), Best Book (Larry Gelbart), and Best Original Score. --David Horiuchi

Fun Show, Average Score.......2007-02-21
Fun show, ingenuos concept, so-so score, with one exception. The ballad With Every Breath I Take is brilliant. One of Coleman's best pieces.
Cleverness personified.......2006-10-16
A duet between an author and the character he created, each claiming "you're nothing without me," is just one example of how sharp, witty and clever show is, with an unusual score, jazzy and bluesy and very 1940s, and some of the best lyrics I know.
Fantastic Jazz Musical That's FUN!!!.......2006-04-14
City of Angels is an incredibly fun, classy, and jazzy musical that delivers. Stellar vocal performances are provided by the entire cast, particularly the female end. The fact that Randy Graff was the only female from this cast nominated at the Tony Awards that year floors me. Kay McClelland and Rachel York deserved nods for their powerful solos, With Every Breath I Take and Lost Found, alone. These two songs are also the type of sultry, jazz solos that one would expect in the 40's, which is why the show works. The music is completely period with when the show takes place, and that's why I love it. The best tracks are:
3) What You Don't Know About Women
6) With Every Breath I Take (destined to be a classic)
9) Lost and Found (wonderful solo)
10) All You Have To Do Is Wait (FUN! FUN! FUN SONG!!! Hilarious as well)
11) You're Nothing Without Me
13) You Can Always Count On Me (Randy Graff's Tony!)
Great Jazz-Oriented Score.......2005-06-25
1990 Tony winner for Best Musical, "City Of Angels" contains a great score, filled with jazz-oriented melodies & torch songs. Not all the songs are terrific, but most of the score lends itself to repeat listenings. Best tracks include:
Double Talk
What You Don't Know About Women
With Every Breath I Take [beautiful song!]
Lost And Found
You're Nothing Without Me [the show's hit]
You Can Always Count On Me
Funny
Great cast ... great buy!
I love it!.......2005-02-22
This is one of my favorite soundtracks ever! Since I'm going to be working on music for the show, I'm happy that this is the case. It has been in my CD player for a few weeks now, and there's enough variety for it not to get old. But having read through the script makes the lyrics infinitely wittier. Musicals are supposed to rely partially on the lyrics and partially on the script. This show does that perfectly. Without the script, the lyrics are (apparently) lacking. But without the lyrics, the script is missing something. When you put the two pieces together, however, it's really easy to see why this show won a Tony.

As anyone who's heard their exuberant first album will tell you, Lemon Jelly are no ordinary chill-out act. Here, the eccentric duo present their second full-length outing, Lost Horizons, and it's every bit as good as their acclaimed debut, Lemonjelly.ky. Inhabiting a world of almost limitless playfulness, Nick Franglen and Fred Deakin make the sort of brassy, beautiful downtempo music that leaves the listener desperately trying to suppress a goofy grin. You see, Lost Horizons is that rarest of things: a focused, humorous, and exciting chill-out album that stands up to repeat listening. Often, this kind of tongue-in-cheek chillage can sound dull and contrived (or, worse, sickly and overbearing), but Lost Horizons is anything but tedious. It bristles with shimmering, sunny instrumentation (jaunty acoustic guitars, skippy beats, tinkling pianos, oh-so-English brass band fanfares--even the odd harp), while quirky, oddball samples lurk 'round every turn ("Nice Weather for Ducks," for example, is a country-funk shakedown based on a sample from a nursery rhyme). From the percussive space jazz of "Return to Patagonia" to the seductive, sleepy closer, "Curse of Ka'zar," Lost Horizons doesn't so much glimmer as positively shine. Is it 2002's best downtempo album? Almost certainly. --Matt Anniss

Just buy it. You will thank me later. One of the most incredible recordings in musical history. Anything by Lemon Jelly is special and Lemonjelly.ky is also out of this world so why not buy them both?
If I could give this CD 100 stars I would.

The delicious Lemon Jelly hit the jackpot again with Lost Horizons, whose artwork is as lovely as that on other releases. Not a wobbly one on this plate, but Ramblin' man, Space Walk, Closer and Nice weather for Ducks are particularly tasty. Go on, take a big bite

Dreamy, Easy, Politically Incorrect..........2006-05-27
From the artwork, you'll see that this group is not about making you feel perfect, but rather to make you feel, period. It brings many textures, a satisfying freshness and a pleasing state of mind; without being an overbearing or boring experience. They're not afraid to take chances musically, but in a way every song makes one feel confortable enough to keep on listening in either hypnosis or awe... All the ducks are swiming in the water, la la la la la la... :)
Uh Let's See I would say Interesting............2006-05-24
I bought this cd because of one song I heard on Radio Free Virgin. It's a very interesting cd. I would listen to this on like a long drive, during a hot bath, or if I was day dreaming. It gets your imagination going for sure and takes you off to another world. If you have heard at least one song and liked it you most likely will enjoy the rest too, even though they are quite different from each other.

I really enjoy this CD set very much. Accardo is phenomenal in playing violin. I listen to thisevery morning and sometimes while I am cooking.
Accardo Is As Great As The Greats! A True Virtuoso of Paganini! Epic Performances!.......2005-10-13
Nicolo Paganini is primarily a virtuoso composer who did not compose anything other than for the violin in the early 19th century. He was a true prodigy of the instrument whose ferocious and innovative style of playing frightened many of the credulent folk into thinking he was the devil. With the increasing popularity of the waltz, he along with other romantics such as Beethoven completely revolutionized the concept of violin concertos that were still then mostly in the antiquated Roccoco menuet formulas of Mozart and Haydn. The caprices are more technical excercises for this new revolutionary style and are the cornerstones of all Romantic traditions of violin including the Romantic German and, to a much lesser extent, the Polish/Klezmer tradition of Joseph Joachim.
Salvatore Accardo is an accomplished violinist who performed many times with the most reputable groups such as I Musici di Roma and the English Chamber Orchestra. He was a long-time mentor of Anne-Sofie Mutter who performed with Karajan. Despite working often with various Baroque styles, Salvatore Accardo is primarily a specialist at Paganini and the Italian Romantic period and this is the main reason this recording is one of the best you can obtain for Paganini. Charles Dutoit is also an accomplished orchestral conductor and generally works very well with Rossini whose light romantic style in his operatic overtures have overlaps with the style in Paganini's contemporary symphonic arrangements for his violin concerti. Accardo and Dutoit were therefore a perfect match in performing Paganini and this ablum is a great example along with their other collaborations for the composer available on single CD. The music is light and joyful in its interpretation while many others tend to be heavy and sluggish. Accardo's performance is filled with vitality as he has complete mastery over the instrument and feels at ease in his performance without ever faltering. His performance brings out the fluidity and full range of Paganini's style very well. Salvatore Accardo's performance of the caprices is also legendary in which he performs all of the most difficult pieces briliantly without effort: they are truly divine in every respect!
Although it's extremely difficult to make a judgment call between these three undisputed virtuosos of the violin and Paganini, Perlman and Heifetz would not be my first choices because they are not really masters of the Italian Romantic style as that of the German/Polish/Klezmer traditions. However technical the differences might be, they do make a significant difference and so I prefer Accardo for Paganini as he is simply the foremost expert with this composer and the Italian Romantic style which Heifetz and Perlman are not. This album is a great buy where you can get all of Paganini's passionate violin concerti and caprices at a good price. There are really few if any performances equal to this one on the market other than those of Perlman and Heifetz. Such other performances, even by child prodigies, are simply beneath them in every respect to the point that they actually sound amateurish in comparison. No matter which of the three you choose, you can't really go wrong with any of them but I would really look no further than them as everything else is far beneath their legendary talents. Enjoy!
What a man! What a Violin! What an Artist!.......2002-04-06
Salvatore Accardo has played magnificently! I am not a classical music critic; I don't know what it really means to be a great violinist, but I certainly enjoy listening to every song in this 6 cd set. I am fifteen years old, but Paganini's music has a great impact on me. My mother bought me this album for Christmas, and I couldn't have received a more wonderful collection of music. I tend to have a preference for the first recording I ever hear of certain songs, and I have heard several of these songs performed by different artists. Let me tell you, these recordings are fantastic. My favorites are the 21st Caprice, the second movement of the 6th concerto, and the entire 4th concerto. Accardo's tone is rich and robust, and the orchestra behind him compliments him perfectly.
Utterly Satisfied,
Bobby
P.S. The title for my review was what Franz Liszt (classical pianist and composer) exclaimed when he heard Paganini perform.:)
Definitive Recordings of Paganini's Violin Music.......2001-10-16
Salvatore Accardo performs Paganini's scores with much elegant grace and warmth. Deutsche Grammophon has successfully assembled all of Accardo's recordings of Paganini's music. Undoubtedly, the highlights are Accardo's riveting accounts of Paganini's violin concerti. Charles Dutoit and the London Philharmonic Orchestra give splendid, warm performances of their own, without overwhelming Accardo's playing. Yet Accardo also shines in Paganini's solo works, such as the Caprices. This is absolutely an essential set of CDs for those who are unfamiliar with Paganini's music. Is it a surprise that these performances are still regarded as definitive in classical CD guides issued by Grammophone and Penguin?
Magnificent for collectors.......2001-02-01
This is a really masterpiece for collector. For the people that love the "virtuoso-violin", this is yours. If you are a fanatic of Paganini's music like me, this is your collection, because you will find the Maestosa sonata sentimentale, the Duo Merveille, "God save the King", in a perfect interpretation, only by Accardo, that are very difficult to find. The 6 Concertos, are amazing, if it is your first time hearing Paganini, you will find absolutely incredible, and remember, is only one violin performing those sounds.
Customer Reviews:
A disappointing release........2005-01-01
Before the release of this set almost 10 years ago now,I recall all the hype about it.I could hardly wait to get my copy.
When I did I couldn't believe what the producers of this set had done.No it wasn't the selections...there are some very rare pieces here that have finally seen the light of day after more than 50 years. No it wasn't the sound....considering the sources for some of these songs it is a wonder that they sound as good as they do.
No what was wrong here is the speed of the recordings. Each one is either too fast or too slow.I am fortunate that I have an adjustable speed CD player so I have been able to compensate for the faux speed of these recordings.
However considering the care and attention that the Brits made to restore these recordings you'd have thought someone with half an ear would have had the common sense to properly adjust for the inconsistent speeds and record/release them as they should have been. And also considering the price for this set it is just another indignation that further peeves this reviewer no end.
So in as much as I can recommend this set for the material alone as it is historically a genuine musical treasure,I cannot do the same for its' presentation for to me this was just plain(and out of character for Brit releases) sloppiness. Thus it barely rates its' 3 star rating.
Glenn deserves far better.
Tokyo Rose went to prison for this same activity.......2004-06-18
You have to realize that these discs were recorded at the height of World War II. The "jerries" were just across the English Channel.
Here we have Glenn Miller toned down - Henry Mancini or Montovani - while retaining the whole of his best work.
A lot of German soldiers must have dreamed of Betty Grable after these broadcasts.
It is obvious that the Glenn Miller Orchestra contributed a lot to the war effort.
D-Day was only part of it.
GET THE ENGLAND PRESSING!.......2000-07-29
This US pressing is good, but inferior to the English one, which has many additional songs, and several vocals with Dinah Shore. The liner notes even include a letter saying that the recording of "Stardust" with Glenn and Dinah is "propoganda."! Do yourself a favor and search for the English version.
One of the best AAF band recordings available.......2000-03-20
This set is one of a pair of AAF gems released during the mid '90s. Because most of the sides were made at the famous Abbey Road studios, the fidelity is higher than most of the other AAF releases on the market. The recordings showcase much of the AAF Band's breadth, with many older Miller standards as well as the richer concert sound of the full orchestra with its 21 strings. The only thing missing is an example of the strings-only arrangements found on the companion "Secret Broadcasts". It's also interesting to hear the German-language patter and vocals used as part of the Allies' propaganda effort. I only have 2 gripes: first, unlike the UK version, the US release leaves out the 4 long-lost commercial sides (including 2 Dinah Shore vocals) the band recorded but never released, and second, even though I can understand the German dialogues a translation would have been helpful for those who don't speak the language. In any case, combine this CD with the marvelous "Secret Broadcasts" for a true Miller treat.
Addendum -
Yes, some of these recordings are considered as "propaganda" (note: keep your spelling checker ON when trying to type this word!) but IMO that only adds to their importance. Miller volunteered for military service with the stated aim of using his music to help the war effort and these recordings show that he did it his way. The narration, both in English and German, doesn't contain any heavy-handed "we will defeat you"-style blathering. Rather, the music is presented as entertainment that crosses national and cultural boundaries and Miller expresses his wishes for eventual peace among nations. There's even a short discussion of how the orchestra members represent different nationalities and religions all working together, with the clear but unspoken aim of rubbing American unity in the face of Nazi hatred. A bit more sophisticated than might be expected for the time, but not surprising, since Glenn Miller was described as a man who "could only [be] fake on his trombone" (- George T. Simon).
If that's "propaganda", so be it.
This is the best "Glenn Miller" out there........2000-01-14
This is excellence. One of the great band leaders, with all the resources that the US Army Air Corp could bring to bare, broadcasting and (Thanks be to God) recording from the Abbie Road studios in London. The orchestration includes a full complement of strings and the vocals are by some of the greats of the era, including Dinah Shore. Interspersed is commentary (Propoganda in its best form) by Glenn himself and Ilse Weinberger, whoever she was. These recordings are made from the masters and are the best "originals" I've heard from the era. This set is also great because it is not the same 12 -15 songs that everyone associates with Miller. To be sure some of them are in here, but I'd be willing to bet that you'll agree even the "standards" are better recordings than the ones you're used to hearing. There are also unexpected treats like "Poinciana" and a unique arrangement of "Begin the Beguine", with some nifty string parts. In some circles, Miller takes a bum rap for being too commercial. I don't if this fits the bill for that criticism. If it does, I can understand why he was so commercially successful. He proves his excellent taste for arranging and his ability to make good music here. Well, I could go on but why? You could be listening for yourself. BUY IT! You'll thank me later. But you won't need to. The smile on your face will be enough.

One of Weill's best American scores!.......2005-10-16
`Lost in the Stars' and `Johnny Johnson' are two Broadway shows scored by Kurt Weill in collaboration with Maxwell Anderson and Paul Green respectively for the librettos, both in English. Both are distinguished works and both were, I believe, fairly popular when they were first performed. What these two works have in common is that they are both works aimed at our social conscience.
`Johnny Johnson' is a mildly anti-war play dealing with America's entering the First World War, written in the mid 1930s, when Germany was already uncomfortable for Jews, but not yet on the brink of precipitating World War II. What is most interesting to me about the libretto is the reluctance of the principle character, Johnny, to enlist in the army, while his fiancée (contrary to many famous antiwar works of the past), is all in favor of his enlisting and threatens to break their engagement if he does not enlist. As a work of art, I believe the work is more interesting as a milepost in American antiwar sentiments than as an important artistic work for either the composer or the lyricist. To my ear, there is not a single song from this work that finds its way into the repertoire of balladeers. This is from a composer who has given us `September Song', `Speak Low', `Lost in the Stars', `Saga of Jenny', and `Lonely House', not to mention all the great songs from his German works such as `Mack the Knife' and `Pirate Jenny'. On top of this, there is my feeling that much of the instrumental music sounds very similar to earlier German works, especially `Mahagonny'.
`Lost in the Stars' is based on Alan Paton's novel, `Cry, the Beloved Country' and was written after World War II, in 1948-1949, and has much of the musical interest of what is missing from `Johnny Johnson'. Throughout the play, the instrumental music is much less similar to earlier Weill works and all songs seem stronger. At least two of these songs, `Lost in the Stars', `Trouble Man' and `Stay Well' are often performed by Lotte Lenya and other vocalists. While it may be pushing it a bit, this work seems almost as strong as Gershwin's `Porgy and Bess'.
I bought both because I am a big fan of Kurt Weill's music, and I would recommend both recordings to any and all Weill enthusiasts, especially as both have extensive notes and complete librettos. But, to the person mostly interested in Broadway in general, I would recommend only `Lost in the Stars'.
I will say that the performances of both vocalists and orchestra are excellent on both; however the vocalists on `Lost in the Stars' seem to give just a little extra, possibly because their material is just a bit more substantial.
I love it!!.......2002-07-12

Can we get someone to put this label back in stock?.......1999-12-28
With great hope in the powerful amazon.com's Jeff Bezos, the person of the year by Time magazine, we wish you can urge someone to put this title back into circulation! I have sung the piece "Lost in the Stars" and was drawn by the wonderful music and intriguing lyrics. Is there a way to locate the music score of the soundtrack?
Powerful performance,historically significant.......1999-06-04
After 50 years the little snippet heard on this site brings back the original emotions.I would love to purchase this recording in any format. The original performance, a life-changing event for me as a young girl, is recaptured.
"THE MOST MOVING MUSIC AND SACRIFICE OF A NATION.......1999-06-01
I saw the oringinal Musical "Lost in the Stars", and have the 33 album. Would love to have a CD to play on my "modern" equipment. When Todd Duncan was asked to do the part of the "Efunsdi", he read the part and broke an existing contract to go into rehearsal. He said "I have to do this for my people." I was enthralled at the libretto and zest of the choreography. So when I hear the music I am taken right back to the Opera stage and see and hear the glorious presentation. Please put it back into circulation, or if someone out there has a copy (cd) I would love to talk to you about it. CT

The best Glenn Miller has EVER sounded.......2007-01-07
GLENN MILLER * THE BEST OF THE LOST RECORDINGS AND THE SECRET BROADCASTS has the finest sound quality of any 1940s performances that you will ever encounter. Surface noise and distortion seem non-existent on these sides-- subtle tonal shading on muted trumpets and the snarl of vibrant high-hats will delight you. Crisp, pounding brass is everywhere, delicate strings as well as all background instruments can clearly be heard.
Fourteen pages of extensive liner notes, band personnel and photos are provided. Many of Miller's biggest hits are here: "In The Mood," "Moonlight Serenade," "Little Brown Jug," "A String Of Pearls," "Tuxedo Junction" and "American Patrol." There's even a cover of a song from the brand new hit Broadway musical, "Oklahoma."
Get ready to enjoy Captain Glenn Miller and his two superbly swinging military big bands as you have never experienced them before. Highest recommendation.

The Best Sound of American Music.......2001-01-03
This was the best Glenn Miller CD I have ever listened to and I have all of them. It was a wonderful chance to hear these lost and precious recordings of an American war hero and musical prodigy. I teach band at an excellent high school that is the best in the state right now. We play all Glenn Miller and this CD has many songs I used that helped us to win state last year. It has so many technical as well as musical aspects that are not heard in any music today. I am amazed at the skill of not only Glenn Miller's conducting, but the band's skill. It's also great swing dancing music. You won't regret buying this CD, I guarantee it.

blew me away.......2005-09-26
I had not heard anything from this album when I bought it, but I have a couple of their other albums, so I thought I would give it a try. When I listened to the whole thing the first time, I was blown away! It is the best Lost Dogs album since Little Red Riding Hood in my opinion. There are some humorous tracks, but most of the album is sincere, touching roots music. If you are a Dogs fan or a Terry Taylor fan, this is a must-have album.
Almost perfect.......2002-06-07
Let me start by saying that I am a christian turned atheist who sill loves the music that these guys play. I only say this because I am not clouded by the notion that "all Christian music is great!!" as I once was. Getting to the disc....the first 2 songs are worth the $15 or whatever dollars you pay for this..they are Byrds inspired jangle-rock that are just perfect. The next song, the title track is a bit slow, but not bad...Three leged dog is a country/rock rave up that would make Jason and the Scorchers proud...in a similar vein is "When the judgement Comes"...I assume these are the songs an earlier reviewer said sounded like Johnny Cash and Merle Hagard....um, no...sorry, I don't think they have ever heard either person..this is a horrible discription....think more Uncle Tupelo or even closer-the Bottle Rockets. (Actually this whole disc is similar to Golden Smog of alt-country fame...if you like that, buy this). The only songs I don't like are Golden Dreams and No Shadow Of a Turning...too boring....but greatness follows in the untitled track...Lovely Man....damn this good. It is sung by Mike Roe of the 77's and it is a mid-tempo countryish shuffle that ends the disc on a perfect note. I listen to this disc often, and I would encourage anyone who is erudite enough to look at this listing to buy it...
Three Legged "Dogs" Ain't Half Bad!.......2001-11-07
With the untimely passing of Gene Eugene, I wondered how well the next project from Lost Dogs would turn out, or if they would even continue to record without him. 'Real Men Cry' definitely lacks Gene's contribution, but with Terry Taylor's creative genius, it is a toe-tapping collection of country style numbers with a touch of bluegrass (In fact, every time I listen to the CD, I picture myself sitting on the front porch in a rocking chair with a cold glass of lemonade in hand, head bobbing in rhythm to the music). Harmonic vocals and great guitar work permiate each track. And once again, Terry's lyrical talent shines. NO SHADOW OF TURNING is my favorite tune, but A CERTAIN LOVE comes in a close second. I get the impression that Terry was thinking of the band when he penned THREE LEGGED DOG and it seems he's returning to his 'roots' with the style of music performed on this and the last project 'Gift Horse'.
As good as the first.......2001-10-02
Lost Dogs was formed when the leading members of four pioneering yet obscure alternative bands got together to rediscover the roots of rock and roll, resulting in 1992's Scenic Routes, a hodgepodge of musical styles running from country to gospel to blues to rock to alternative. Three more albums brings us to the release of last years Gift Horse and the passing away of member Gene Eugene, leaving many to wonder if he would be replaced, who would replace him, who could replace him, or if The Lost Dogs would even continue. Legally binding record contracts being what they are, The Lost Dogs have continued, sans replacement.
Being this is their first album as a three-piece (plus the usual ragtag of rhythm section players), it's somewhat fitting that album is quite reminiscent of the Merle Haggard-Johnny Cash feel of the very first Lost Dogs album. While Gift Horse unabashedly country with twang, this one runs the stylistic gamut, although not as much as their 1996 release Green Room Serenade. One of the joys in having four, er, three strong song writers in a group is each member has their turn at bat but as in last years release, Terry Taylor wrote nearly every song, resulting in a more uniform tone but one that is not as nearly as adventurous or as fun as it could be. Still, they take turns on vocals and guitars, including the copious vocal harmonies. Even for one such as myself who abhors the twangy end of country music, there are lots of well-written gems that are sure to be ignored by the general public. Mike Roe croons the effective ballad of a title track in a gentle tenor voice and later does his best Gene Eugene impersonation on the touching "In The Distance". "The Legged Dog" is a rollicking, humorous song about a dog (band?) that has "a few miles left." "Dust on the Bible" is appropriately of the gospel genre while "Certain Love" is an upbeat alternative country song spouting lyrics such as "I had a dream but it fell apart/ A trusted friend who broke my heart." True to form, the songs are sweet and sad, describing losses, loneliness and regret but always with a flicker of hope. While not my favorite Lost Dogs album, there is a definite charm and earnestness to these "sung from the heart" songs, a joy in being alive despite life's hardships and pains that makes this album a keeper.
Very good album!.......2001-09-27
This first album since the untimely death of co-founding member Gene "Eugene" Andrusco finds the Dogs in fine form. Terry Taylor's fine songwriting dominates the album, as he wrote all but one track on the album. As with their last album, they include an old favorite, "Dust on the Bible" as an homage to their love for traditional gospel. The album was recorded at Eugene's "Fabulous Green Room" studio, as always.
Missing from the list of players this time around are drummer Burleigh Drummond and Gregg Kellogg, who had added steel guitar to the previous Dogs releases. Manning the sticks is Frank Lenz, a fine session drummer who has played on many alt-rock albums, most notably with Fold Zandura. Old friends Mike Knott and Phil Madeira contribute vocals and keyboards, respectively.
The songs, as mentioned, are first rate musically and lyrically. "Certain Love" and "Gates of Eden" get the album off to a rousing start. Unfortunately, Derri Daughtery's thin vocals are almost overwhelmed by the instruments on the latter piece. All 3 Dogs take turns doing lead vocals on the songs, and they vary in mood and tone. Most stay in a Merle Haggard, country-ish vein. Many songs feature all the Dogs harmonizing such that you can't help but join in! Longtime fans of the Dogs and their respective bands will love this album. Those new to the band will find lots to like as well. I would highly recommend this album!
one minor complaint I have is several of the songs come in at less than 3 minutes, leaving sort of an empty feeling. However, if you take time to absorb the lyrics, you'll come away from this album in a great mood.

I can't give a title that doesn't sound exaggerated.......2007-03-31
While continuing their James Hilton theme (I still need to read some of his works), FODM departs a bit from the remarkably well-flowing, "concept album" feel of both On the Shore and Random Harvest to deliver us a more diverse collection of tunes. We get the power and grandeur of "Landfall", the space-rock of "Heart of Darkness", the sweeping beauty of "Somewhere Over the Waves", the desert relaxation of "Two Hundred Miles", and an acoustic reworking one of my all-time favorite songs "Dusk" (from Random Harvest); they even give us a couple of lounge pieces, "Departure" and "All in the Golden Afternoon", that you would expect to hear on Retrograde or Artardecer.
But don't worry, through all the changing moods FODM are still able to pack more atmosphere and emotion into every song than most bands can pack into a career's worth of albums.
Best record yet!.......2006-01-10
The band just gets better and better. This record is a bit different from the others as it is decidedly more "jammy." But not in the wanky Phish kind of way, more like the Thelonius Monk kind of way. Jam with a direction. Furthermore, Bill Elm's steel takes a bit of a rest while Mike Semple covers an array of different guitar tones and styling all over the record. The melodies are at their greatest on this record. It's a beautiful and painful record. I am always surprised how much emmotion FoDM can express in the absence of lyrics...especially concidering the sad state of lyrical prowess in indie music today.
Lost Horizon is a soundtrack to whatever you want it to be. It evokes arid desert dreams and congures an imagination that usually goes underutilized.
Lost Horizon is a wonderful record. It really showcases who the kings of instrumental rock are. (Ackem! Explosions in the Sky Ahckem!)
Buy this record. You won't be disappointed because it's really good. That's all you need to know.
A real treat - ANOTHER 2005 album from FODM.......2005-12-11
Lost Horizon continues FODM's "new" direction, and in my opinion it's a real breakthrough. The earlier-era lonesome spaghetti-western sound is long gone (although the recent Live at Club 2 features some great renditions of those earlier songs), and has been replaced with more ambitious songwriting and experimentation. Whereas their earlier releases used to feature mostly Bill Elm and his amazing console lap steel, this latest offering is all about Mike Semple's outrageously underrated guitar playing, and the band gels into a much more cohesive sound as a result. "Somewhere Over The Waves" is an organ-based mood piece that is FODM at their haunting best, one of those songs (like A Place In the Sun's "Broken Bell") that you wish was twice as long as it is. "Two Hundred Miles" has a fine sounding acoustic guitar, "Dawn" features an evocative nylon-string, and "All In the Golden Afternoon" is as expansive and epic as you can get. Only "Heart of Darkness" swerves into the cacaphony that (I think) mars some of their stuff; but the new version of Random Harvest's "Dusk" seems more fully realized somehow. The last piece, "Departure," harkens back to the band's earlier style, almost as a farewell. It's a great way to close the album. The vast majority of this album is beautiful and disquieting, and is by far my favorite since "On the Shore."

Album Description
The Complete Caruso: Volumes 1 - 12
The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso holds a unique place in musical history, as the first operatic singer whose recordings sold in millions, and who created an international reputation on the strength of these. Caruso's robust tone and musical sincerity made him both an ideal stage and recording artist, whose voice the primitive acoustic recording technology of the early twentieth century was able to reproduce with startling fidelity. The Naxos Historical Caruso edition constitutes the complete cycle of all Caruso's recordings issued in chronological order. In addition, the transfers have been immaculately undertaken by top sound engineer Ward Marston, unrivalled for his knowledge of the specialized world of acoustic opera recordings, and his rare ability to retrieve all of the music lying in the grooves of the original recordings. Naxos Historical's incredible price (12 CD'S FOR THE PRICE OF 10) puts this unique legacy of great singing within the reach of all music-lovers. This! complete cycle of recordings represents a major document in the history of sound recording, and one which no collector and enthusiast of great singing will wish to be without. "There is no series of vocal records that have a greater documentary value, that meant more to the development of the phonograph record, or that are as consistently capable of providing pleasure to lovers of great singing. ...One of the most significant recording industry events of the decade." Fanfare
Customer Reviews:
Get It While You Can.......2006-10-13
This may not be easy to get in the USA for very long.....don't miss it.
Essential edition for opera lovers.......2005-02-01
This set gives you the opportunity to follow the entire recording career of one of the greatest singers in Operatic History. Enrico Caruso was the first superstar of the 20th century -- and this without the benefit of mass media. His person and his records were his greatest publicity.
The set begins with Caruso's Italian made recordings. They show a great raw talent. The artistry is lacking with many sobs, over acting and mistaken cues. The 1902 and 1903 clearly show a tenor with a lot to learn. But learn it he did. His 1904 sessions show a mature artist on par with any heard since. His voice matures before your very ears and by 1910, you wonder if you will ever listen to any other tenor the same way again.
The engineering used for this set is wonderful. There is no attempt at all to use the soundstream process of computer sound enhancement as heard on the RCA issued sets. These are near perfect mint conditioned discs copied by engineer extraordinary Ward Marston. They sound like natural 78s, they way Caruso himself must have heard the playbacks at the (RCA) Victor studios.
Also included are outtakes and extra takes. There is a "Celeste Aida" from 1908, complete with a broken high note, previously released by RCA in a 1973 set commemorating the tenor's centenary birthday. But there are new treasures here as well, including extra takes of two of Caruso's greatest recordings, the Italian song "L'Alba separa dalla l'uce ombra" and an aria from Rubinestine's Nerone. Listening to them, one wonders what Caruso could have possible thought inadquate in those long lost altenative takes.
Finally, there is the simple joy of hearing so many things so well sung. Caruso was the pinnacle of the tenor art. He can be compared to no other single tenor since ... he has the brilliant ring of Bjorling, the passion of Gigli, the beauty of Gedda, the youthful enthusiasm of Lanza, the warm tonal quality of Tucker, the pure strength of Corelli, the charasma of Pavarotti and the artestry of Domingo.
Whether you are an opera fan, a voice fan or just a music lover. This set is worth every penny.
