I returned this to New Castle. Box 15550. I have heard nothing. The date of the return was 15/05/07 from my Throop postoffice in Dorset. I sent it recorded delivery. Over to you. There was nothing on the return screen to explain the fault. ie faulty track. So after many attempts to get intouch I sent it to the address on the paper inside the parcel. Please help.
I am a Grandmother so I am over 13 ???

As a young boy I would play my trumpet from my father's old Arban's method book. My private trumpet teacher (Mr. Bonfield) would love to play duets with me from the Merchant of Venice. One day I heard Wynoton Marsailas play a a flawless rendition of The Merchant of Venice on my local clasical radio station. It was flawless and brought back many fond memories of studiying the trumpet as a youngster with my beloved teacher. This collection contains that rendition and a wide selecton of clasical trumpet pieces. You may not recognize every song, but you will enjoy the high quality of the music and artists on this CD. Anyone looking for an introduction to quality, classical, trumpet music should buy this CD. The price also makes this an affordable must for any true trumpet fan.

This is a splendid anthology of music. Traditional Baroque and orchestral pieces up front, and a few surprises nearer the end. A splendid work. The price makes it a steal. Add it to your cart. You will not be sorry. There is technical excellence - peace in some of the songs and real energy in others.

Trumpet fans should all own this album, that is if they don't already own all of the pieces on here on separate recordings (it would take a while to obtain them all). This recording features a bunch of great classical trumpeters and innovators such as Armando Ghitalla, Phil Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Gould, H.L. Clarke, Ron Romm, Charles Schleuter, William Vacchiano, and more. Great performances of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2", the Haydn and Hummel Concertos, Wynton's excellent performance of J.B. Arban's "The Carnival Of Venice", the New England Brass Ensemble performing "Trumpet Voluntary", a very good job done by a Baroque Orchestra of the Vivaldi Concerto for Two Trumpets, "The Three Aces" played by H.L. Clarke, and Leroy Anderson's classic "A Bugler's Holiday".

Overall this is a great listen to some of the best trumpet players of all-time in this idiom. All of the pieces are impeccably played by some of the best. I didn't discover this tape in my collection until recently, and boy I'm glad I did.

If I were you, I would buy this CD. It is a diverse collection of amazing performances of quintessential pieces - an important addition to any classical music fan's collection. Heck, even if you're not big on classical music (or trumpet music or brass music or music at all) you should purchase this compact disc.

And comrades, let me say that you can't call yourself a member of the human race until you've heard Wynton Marsalis' performance of JB Arban's "Variations of Carnival of Venice." It's literally perfect. Buy this today.

    In my opinion, this is one of the best CD's I have ever herd. The playing is clean and pure, and never gets old. I have 100's of classical CD's, but I never tire of this one.

    This is a bright, snappy forward moving CD. I have owned all their records/CD's at sometime, and this is my all time favorite. The playing is awesome, very baroque in style. You'll recognizes some tunes and fall in love with the rest.

      I think I know what electronic classical music is, considering I made an album called Kulture. This does not sound electronic, if it does, it uses drums = not good. It sounds way too classical.

      With special emphasis on the variety presented in this collection, this album has a broadness of scope that will appeal to anyone who appreciates the magic of the human voice.
      McCormack was perhaps the most popular entertainer in the world during his career, comparable with the superstars of today, only richer in the currency of his day.
      Though purists may have criticized his shift to the popular venue as opportunism, and perhaps desertion of his training in the classical tradtions, he was simply presenting what people wanted to hear. Whether he set a pattern of career management followed by modern entertainers or was simply happiest when the accolades flowed over him matters not. The talent and richness are his legacy to us.
      His range and vocal dexterity are well illustrated and represented by this larger than usual collection, and anyone with a particular favorite tune in his rather loose genre will likely find it here.
      After a journey through this collection, listeners may well gain another special melody or two for addition to their personal list of "best ever" songs and singers.
      Although it may be considered a bit foolish, some will choose this album for only one or two tracks. Some call that trait wasteful, but when a jewel of performance is played again and again, the teardrop may fall once more, and the heart will thrill yet again.
      This album will please many musical palates, even those who claim no special fondness for "Irish Tenors."

      Many reasonably sophisticated American and European musiclovers still think there are really no American classical music composers of note other than perhaps Gershwin and Copland. It is to the credit of the Naxos label, via their 'American Classics' series, that the lie is put to that notion. Each month there are new issues from Naxos containing music by American composers. And it was a brilliant idea for them to take selections from their dozens of releases of this music to put together this sampler of such music to illustrate a 100+ page essay on the subject by an eminent writer on music, Barrymore Laurence Scherer. The combination of 2 CDs of music tracks, Scherer's essay, a chronological outline, suggestions for further listening, even a map showing where various composers were born helps the 'student' learn much about our nation's musical heritage.

      There are selections by twenty-eight composers stretching from the amazing Wagnerian 'Macbeth' Overture by William Henry Fry (1813-1864) to the very recent 'Rapture,' a percussion concerto by Michael Torke (b. 1961). Some selections are complete movements, others are shorter passages from larger works. Included are such gems as the first movement of Arthur Foote's Piano Quartet, the third movement of Henry Hadley's Fourth Symphony, Charles Ives's 'The Unanswered Question,' 'King Cotton' by John Philip Sousa, 'Maple Leaf Rag' by Scott Joplin, a passage (the exciting Spanish Waltz) from Walter Piston's 'The Incredible Flutist,' the finale of Copland's 'Billy the Kid,' the opening of Samuel Barber's luminous 'Knoxville - Summer of 1915,' 'Tonight' from Bernstein's 'West Side Story,' the opening of George Rochberg's masterful Violin Concerto, and John Adams's incredibly popular 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine.' Plus selections by Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Edward MacDowell, George Whitefield Chadwick, Amy Beach, Charles Tomlinson Griffes, Charles Wakefield Cadman, George Gershwin, George Antheil, Zez Confrey, William Schuman, John Cage, Gunther Schuller, Alan Hovhaness, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass. The performances are more than acceptable and in some instances ('Knoxville,' Rochberg's Violin Concerto) definitive.

      I would heartily recommend this set (especially at its superbudget price) to anyone wanting to know more about the history of American classical music -- Scherer is a master of cogent, clear prose -- and wishing to hear examples of the broad range it has taken over the past couple of centuries. I can easily imagine this set being used in a music appreciation course. And I am sure it will spark interest in the newcomer to this branch of classical music.

      Towards the end of the third track, one is liable to, Jesus, I don't know-grip the arm, twist the back, and hit the linoleum. Lena Willemark lets out a Scandinavian field cry that would make Birgit Nilsson recoil in sheer horror. Upon hearing this ostensible Swedish folk vocal tradition, I launched into a full blown buffo laugh, dropping the discman, waking the brother, and finding solace in living with my parents. Oh, Manfred Eicher, you crazy German you!

      A Nordic spiritual song cycle sung almost entirely in Swedish? With the odd instrumentation of bass, church organ, piano, and percussion? Hmmmm. Certainly not my ordinary cup of tea. And probably not yours, either. Nevertheless, there's something mesmeric, something mysterious, something flitting at the edge of consciousness that causes this music, willy-nilly, to grow on one.

      The product of a commission to compose new sacred music to be premiered in the Cathedral of Vasteras, Sweden, this music partakes of a variety of sources: classical lieder, new music, jazz improv, Scandinavian hymnody. The result, if not always completely pleasing--and, it must be admitted, often somewhat alien--nevertheless often enough resonates with previously heard musical sensibilities to establish a link with anyone even vaguely familiar with its antecedents.

      Anders Jormin has proven over the course of numerous sessions as leader and sideman to be one of Europe's premier bassists. He doesn't disappoint here, with a variety of arco and pizzicato stylings that consistently engage and frequently arrest. Marilyn Crispel, a pianist almost always worth hearing, here adopts a rather minimalist approach to her instrument, hugely effective and evocative given the spare Northernness of the materials.

      The make-or-break instrumentalist for most listeners will be Lena Willemark, vocalist. Since most of this disc is sung in Swedish, the majority of North American listeners will have no clue as to the meaning of what she's intoning (and the disc contains no translations of lyrics); we're left, then, to judge her performance on phrasing, timbre, and the conveyance of emotional content alone. On these criteria, she scores highly, constantly deploying a hugely evocative vocal palette, now whispery, not declamatory, which the supporting musicians absolutely lock into: there's a very distinct and quite beguiling mysterioso vibe all over this disc, even if one can't make heads no tails of its actual lyrical content.

      I'm tempted to give this a full five stars, if just for its ability to corral and domesticate almost over-the-top weirdness. But I'm not going to, just because I don't see myself reaching for it on a regular basis. But I do have to admit that after several listens, its hidden glories do begin to make themselves abundantly clear. Can one give a rating of four-and-three-quarter stars? If so, that's mine. Otherwise, four and a half.
