The modern jazz revolution which came to be known as bebop was distinguished by a level of melodic-harmonic complexity and rhythmic brinkmanship which required the most elevated levels of instrumental virtuosity imaginable. As if to drive the point home, composers such as trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie crafted certain tunes to function as musical obstacle courses, which quickly separated the men from boys--without mercy. Such is the premise on For Musicians Only, save that with a driving rhythm section keyed by bassist supreme Ray Brown, and saxophone masters Stan Getz and Sonny Stitt on board as the other horns, there is no shortage of musical fiber. Brisk tempos and challenging chord changes are the order of the day, with Gillespie's anthemic "Bebop" setting a daunting standard. The trumpeter is in peak form here and on a riveting "Lover Come Back to Me," articulating breathtaking runs and high-wire rhythmic variations with all the fluidity of a saxophone, but with a tart, crackling tone all his own. Stitt, as is wont, plays with incredible speed and rhythmic articulation, and anyone who visualizes Getz as no more than the arbiter of cool tenor, should take note of this sheep in wolf's clothing's relentless melodic intensity on "Wee (Allen's Alley)." --Chip Stern

In the afterglow of his 60th birthday in 1997, Nonesuch Records delivered Steve Reich and his listeners an immense gift, this 10-CD retrospective of his work for the label, extending from his earliest tape-manipulation pieces to his most recent compositions utilizing samplers and the video artistry of Beryl Korot. Aside from the ear's liquid sense-making when it hears the dense and limber marimbas of Reich's Six Marimbas or his taut, dizzying Piano Phase, there is a physical response almost inevitable in Reich's music. It stuns and holds you. And he knows it. It's Gonna Rain struck an early chord of inventiveness, featuring an African American Pentecostal preacher's sermon and eventually spinning the title phrase into a jangling repetition of single words. Percussion works abound here: Clapping and Drumming stun with their deceptive similarity and warm clarity. Perennial favorite Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann synched up on two pianos and careening at full tilt in unison before their four hands fall out of time and phrase with each other, only to realign in a powerful swooping demonstration of energy and focus. The latter CDs hold abundant delights, many revealing Reich's late-discovered spiritualism and Judaica: Different Trains' examination of the Holocaust; Tehillim's shimmering Hebrew texts sung with fascinating choral power; Proverb's invocation of Perotin. Closing the set are recent pieces: Nagoya Marimbas, and the sampler-rich City Life and The Cave. --Andrew Bartlett

While a multi CD collection spanning 30 years does sound very promsing, Nonesuch cannot offer all of the best recordings of some of Reich's masterpieces (Music for 18 Musicians or Drumming), and some have been missed out completely (Music for a Large Ensemble), presumably because the piece was not recorded under the Nonesuch label. While the collection is formidable, a listener wanting to hear the best recordings of all the pieces might do better seeking out the older (or longer!) recordings of the pieces.

The term "essential" gets thrown about too much. And heck, the claim that certain words get thrown about too much gets thrown about too much. But here is a collection that really *is* essential to understanding the nature of a whole shift not just in classical music, but in popular music and indeed in popular culture. So many of Reich's ideas and concepts have become so deeply embedded in current classical music, film scoring (any number of examples, but think about Tangerine Dream's score for "Risky Business" and Hans Zimmer's score for "Thin Red Line," for starters), electronic music and even the visual arts.

This box set gives the listener all of Reich's major works. I can't even attempt to describe them individually, but every one of these 10 CDs is compelling. For the totally uninitiated, take out "Music for 18 Musicians" (presented here in a crystalline new recording) to get an idea of what the core of this guy is all about. From there, you might want to listen to "Different Trains," "Electric Counterpoint" and "Six Marimbas" to get an idea of the pointillistic pulse minimalism that Reich contributed to the world. The earlier material is the more challenging, exploring the subtleties of rythym, phase relationships between sounds and shifting timings. Among these, the new recording of "Four Organs" is just outstanding.

Reich's works, along with the early works of Terry Riley and Philip Glass, form the foundation of an enormous edifice that has grown of music that attempts to return to its essential and hypnotic roots. With this box set, one of those pylons becomes clear.

Alright, I own this session which came in a reissue edition of the two mid-50's recordings of Diz and Getz on vinyl. I thought this was an awesome session with some really good playing. Bebop at it's best, you get Dizzy my second favorite trumpet player (after Miles) Stan Getz playing really well techinacally, and Sonny Stitt who blew me away on this one with the solos. It was a hot jam sessions type of sessions with some of bebops best. Yes, the solos aren't exactly melodic, but they had a structure to the solos, in other words it was no ornette coleman album. Also it doesn't have "too many notes" it's bebop man, get with it.

I love, love, love this album. You can feel an incredible energy coming out of this record. Bebop was a serious music business in those days. If you were a jazz musician then you should be able to play with these monsters at the breakneck speed presented here. And I think it could sounded scaring ... Today you can't find in a thousands jazz records the same energy, the same stunning musicianship you can find here in this 58 date. Previous reviewers stated some very true things about this album. Among them the fact that at that time computer didn't exist. This is what happened in the studio, first take. No overdubs, no clearings in the mix. This is it. They play at this level. They practiced incredibly hard to gain this level and we should be grateful they did because listening to them is an unbelievable music experience.
Second that the John Lewis rhythmn section is almost a neutral ground on which the soloists can be the most clearly visible. The combo did a stellar job in my opinion as a constant coherent base for the soloists and Stan Levey played here as one of the greatest drummers in Jazz. The three soloists are at the top of their game and I can't understand why some people tend to forget that Getz is another unbelievable technician. Maybe these guys have never had the opportunity to listen to "At storyville". Getz was not a "light feather" or a delicate player (not ONLY I mean...). He was a monster musician just as Stitt or Diz himself. Probably Diz here is the greatest, but it's not an easy task chosing who gave his very best among those three here. (.... personally I'm completly in love with Diz sense of drama and irony, he was, UNBELIEVABLE!!). Among the tunes I choose Bebop and Wee as the best here. Maybe Bebop first. It really is a perfect statement of what the new music was about. Try to imagine that prior to bebop, Jazz was that thing used as ballroom music. Music to shake bottoms! Here we are in front of pure intellectualism and musical refinement of the highest grade. The difference at that time surely scared more than one jazz aficionado. The sonic magma you are about to experience is something that can change your idea about jazz forever. Jazz unaware people generally tend to associate jazz with brushes and romantic ballads with singers. Give'em this fist in their faces and let 'em understand how serious, stellar and challenging Jazz can be. Listening to this album is always an incredible pleasure and it is one of the albums I bought first when I began to go deep into Jazz more than 20 years ago. This album should be entitled "For hipsters" or "For serious jazz listeners only" not for moldy figs. It's absolutly a masterpiece of the music of the past century. Period.

5 out of 5 stars Learning a challenging language: when the means justifies the end........2005-06-10

Although I was aware from the beginning of Diz' duets with Rollins and Stitt ("Sonny Side Up"), this one passed below my radar screen until now--perhaps because my jazz peers in college were so dismissive of the music of white and/or West Coast musicians such as Getz, who is featured here along with Diz and Stitt. In any case, "For Musicians Only" is consummate playing, right up there with Bird's best as belonging in a time capsule for future generations to discover and marvel at.

Admittedly, the music on this recording isn't especially accessible. But like James Joyce's "Ulysses" it's representative of the "language" of jazz at its most sophisticated and complex. What counts on these performances excuted at headspinning speed (this CD must contain the largest quantity of "beats" on record) is the crispness of execution, the boldness of conception, the exhilaration of pyrotechnics.

The recording also clarifies for me the dividing line between the original bebop conception of Diz and Bird and the later "hard bop" reduction of it, or between an "open" approach toward creation vs. the "Blue Note style" that began to define so much jazz in the late '50's and beyond. The John Lewis-led rhythm section, even with the presence of Ray Brown, is no heating plant but an unobtrusive, practically transparent, canvas for the gladiators to do their work on. All three are at the top of their respective games. Stitt sticks to alto, content to reflect Bird's legacy rather than take on Getz (though to my ears neither saxophonist quite matches Diz).

I can't help but notice the integrated racial make-up of the group (4-3) at a time when color lines were still quite conspicuous in the music. All the more reason to regard the session as of historic and musical importance--perhaps not merely a mid-century representation of the potential of the music but a high-water mark as well.

I don't understand what the griping is about. These days I would be happy to come across a quintet with one-fifth the firepower of these guys. To listen to them just play live in the studio and knock the tunes out is simply mind-blowing. It's a clear case of talent over technology. Modern musicians have so many tools to clean up and edit after the fact - they can even make recordings without ever meeting - just slap the tracks together. But it seems a vital energy and sense of the moment is lost in this manner, which really is a shame. Stan Getz is the big surprise here. After listening to all that bossa nova stuff - Who knew? Even if you have only a passing interest in jazz - this is a great disc to own. It really is the pulse of what was happening at that moment in time, and not just For Musicians Only.

The story behind this from my Dad's (Stan Levey) point of view is that everything was done in one take no 2nd takes no over dubbing. He had spent the whole day recording for TV, Mission Imposible Mannix etc. so he thought a date with Stan Getz this should be pretty laid back.

Well nothing could be further from the truth he said "The count offs were breath taking but once they got thru BeBop everything settled down" his favorite was Wee Allen's Alley. It was virtually a live real Bebop session, nothing worked out, just play by the seat of your pants or get off the bandstand. Like it or not that was the way it was with Bird and those cats, the real thing no pretense.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

    Album Description

    Ann Arbor, Michigan, seems an unlikely site for the establishment of a major avant-garde festival that would shake the new-music community. Tucked away in America's heartland, the city is equally removed from the Eastern metropolises whose artists pride themselves on sensing the pulse of the times, and from the nonconformist West Coast. Yet during the 1960s Ann Arbor played host to one of the most extraordinary adventures in American music history: the annual ONCE Festival and its nexus of related activities.

    The primary aim of ONCE's founders--Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, George Cacioppo, Roger Reynolds, and Donald Scavarda--was to create a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge music. To this end they were phenomenally successful. Performers and composers--whether little-known or renowned--embraced the endeavor, demanding almost nothing in return. Perhaps most important, however, ONCE acted as a creative stimulus for its organizers. Scavarda describes the adventure as an explosion of pent-up energy: "Suddenly we could write anything we wanted and have it heard." And they did. The ONCE composers--and many guest artists--wrote a host of new works, some experimental, others more traditional.

    What united the ONCE composers was their exploration of sound, whether through the medium of extended techniques on traditional instruments, electronic (or electronically modified) timbres, or the intersection of musical sounds with those of the environment.

    A major slice of ONCE's rich musical legacy--35 works constituting six hours of music--is presented here, almost all for the first time. These pieces are as diverse in style as they are compelling in expression. This landmark set, the most comprehensive document ever released of this legendary event, is an opportunity for anyone interested in contemporary music to hear history in the making. Included in the set is a 140-page booklet with a lengthy scholarly essay by musicologist and biographer Leta Miller and numerous rare photos of ONCE personages and performances.

          Although I was aware from the beginning of Diz' duets with Rollins and Stitt ("Sonny Side Up"), this one passed below my radar screen until now--perhaps because my jazz peers in college were so dismissive of the music of white and/or West Coast musicians such as Getz, who is featured here along with Diz and Stitt. In any case, "For Musicians Only" is consummate playing, right up there with Bird's best as belonging in a time capsule for future generations to discover and marvel at.

          Admittedly, the music on this recording isn't especially accessible. But like James Joyce's "Ulysses" it's representative of the "language" of jazz at its most sophisticated and complex. What counts on these performances excuted at headspinning speed (this CD must contain the largest quantity of "beats" on record) is the crispness of execution, the boldness of conception, the exhilaration of pyrotechnics.

          The recording also clarifies for me the dividing line between the original bebop conception of Diz and Bird and the later "hard bop" reduction of it, or between an "open" approach toward creation vs. the "Blue Note style" that began to define so much jazz in the late '50's and beyond. The John Lewis-led rhythm section, even with the presence of Ray Brown, is no heating plant but an unobtrusive, practically transparent, canvas for the gladiators to do their work on. All three are at the top of their respective games. Stitt sticks to alto, content to reflect Bird's legacy rather than take on Getz (though to my ears neither saxophonist quite matches Diz).

          I can't help but notice the integrated racial make-up of the group (4-3) at a time when color lines were still quite conspicuous in the music. All the more reason to regard the session as of historic and musical importance--perhaps not merely a mid-century representation of the potential of the music but a high-water mark as well.
