Customer Reviews:
Wish I knew about this 13 years ago.......2006-08-24
I was thrilled to find Gary Clark's Ten Short Songs About Love available on amazon.com. I had heard bad copies of a couple of the songs two years ago, but never pursued the CD. I found it as I was adding album art to my iPod for Danny Wilson. Their first album, Meet, is one of my desert island CD's and I was thrilled to learn that some of Gary's output after Danny Wilson was so easily available. My only regret is that I didn't know about it in 1993 when it was released. The album is chock full of the hooks and masterful lyrics of Danny Wilson's music and any fan of their music, or any fan of sensible, intelligent pop music, will love this CD.
I'm not a fan of track-by-track reviews so I'll just end this by saying that each song captured my attention, whether with expressive percussion, effervescent melodies, faultless harmonies or imaginative lyrics.
I am glad I chanced upon this CD through my stumbled searching through amazon's catalog.
Brilliant as Usual though Slightly Flawed in Track Sequence.......2006-07-24
Yet another great album from the Danny Wilson stable. Most songs are brilliantly conceived, especially "This is Why J", but does it have to be the opening track? It must be very hard to sell an album when the "sampling" song is not immediately likeable, but grows only with repeated listening. Can't win too many fans when they decide to give the whole album a miss after listening to the ant-pace deeply emotional song at the CD shop.
Freefloating may be a little to pop-ish, so perhaps if there was ever a chance to remake the album, the first track might instead be something a little more up-tempo like We Sail, St Jude or Any Sunday Morning.
Not too happy with the last two "filler" tracks - why waste airtime with Sail On, Sail on and Jackson in My Kitchen, when you could have included at least one more "proper" DW-type track?
Overall I feel this one is a little better than Beebop Moptop, but wont ever get a chance to take off because of track sequence arrangment. Nothing can beat "Meet Danny Wilson" - which is probably one the best albums EVER in the history of man.
Passionate Friend.......2004-10-06
So much music these days lacks passion or any form of genuine This album - over 10years old now oozes passion and quality and, believe it or not, was recorded in Gary's flat in London.
Like Bebop Moptop this was criminally underrated in it's day but contains that magic for which the Danny's were known.
If you like DW you'll love this - and if you haven't heard any of the Danny's stuff you'll appreciate what a great songwriter and performer Gary Clarks was and is.
I recommend you buy this... you can buy me drink when you've heard it, love, Neil
The best pop music never played on American radio.......2000-10-26
Congratulations...if you have searched through the archives and found this guy it means you probably know Gary's: Ten Short Songs... basically picks up where Danny Wilson left off (he was DW's lead vocalist). I write this half wanting to share a great find and half wanting to keep it to myself. But anymore pressure we can put on Gary to get another project out there is worth the risk. The music on Ten Short songs... is catchy, singable, and melodic. It truly is a mystery to me why Gary hasn't seen greater commercial success here in the states. The songs on the disk span the spectrum from the provocative "This Is Why J" to the spunky "Let's Make A Family", (the first dance at the wedding reception will never be the same). The entire CD is a keeper-- well produced, well played and very well sung. Gary's approach to a song is typically Scottish: moody but sincere. I won't hold it against him though; my family hails from his hometown.
Twelve "GREAT" Short Songs!!!.......1999-05-12
When I bought this album, I knew this album was gonna be a great one knowing all three Danny Wilson's albums, "Meet Danny Wilson," "Bebop Moptop," and "Sweet Danny Wilson." This album simply exceeded my expectation, and I loved every single song in the album. The entire album is only less than 40 min, but this album has such a quality that makes me want to listen over and over. Poetic and romantic lyrics and melodies could take you to the world of imagination. I just can't say enough about this album. If you liked Danny Wilson, you are going to like this album!
