In the '70s, the Portland, Oregon, group Pleasure may have been ahead of its time with its jazzy funk. During the same time, in the same town, the Jeff Lorber Fusion was breaking ground with its own funky brand of jazz. In the '90s, the old friends hooked up for this recording, which sounds as fresh as if they'd recorded it yesterday. Lorber fans will love tracks featuring then-rising stars like trumpeter Chris Botti and the late saxophonist Art Porter, but it's the timeless funk of the boys from Pleasure that dominate here with red-hot grooves on "Enjoy Yourself," "We Got To Live Together," the title track, and Roy Ayers's "Hey Uh." Lorber contributes mightily with "Get Wid It," a dynamic example of his early keyboard style, but guitarist Marlon McLain and bassist Nathaniel Phillips, with the help of vocalist Terry Stanton of Hidden Beach Unwrapped, truly funk things up. --Mark Ruffin

The hip-hop producer extraordinaire tackles Blue Note's soul-jazz catalog on his latest project, given free reign to rummage around the fabled label's vaults. On one level, the project makes perfect sense given Madlib's Yesterday's New Quintet work--he clearly has an ear for the Blue Note jazz aesthetic. The remixes and reinventions here are mostly pleasant and even surprising at times--get down with "Mystic Bounce," a flip on Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew." Yet, some of these tracks seem a little too casual and undercooked, making Shades of Blue feel a bit too much like just another Madlib side project. In fact, Blue Note had already done a better job with this very same concept on their largely forgotten 1996 New Groove compilation, where artists such as Large Professor and the Roots took their stabs at the label's catalog. --Oliver Wang
Album Description
Shades of Blue opens with the declaration that "We are now having a little cooking session for Blue Note right here on the scene..." Madlib was afforded the opportunity to mine the crates of Blue Note. On Shades of Blue, Madlib delivers remixes and brand spanking new interpretations of Blue Note classics. Whether funking out Ronnie Foster's original "Mystic Brew" and transforming it into the "Mystic Bounce," or giving Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" a go with Yesterday's New Quintet, rest assured that Madlib's innovative sonic vocabulary will fill the ears. Other artists receiving a Madlib reimagination include Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Bobby Hutcherson, Horace Silver, The Three Sounds and many more.

At Madlib finest.......2007-05-14
I don't know what to say but good and if love jazz with some hip hop you'll most definitely love this cd.
A madlib fan.......2006-04-28
now i can't imagine why anyone would give this less then 4 stars, i gave it five. Now some people who badmouthed this album are obviously not madlib fans cause this album is incredible. Now if you want the origanal blue Note rocordings then go find them(untinted) but this is Madlib's interpratation and just like YNQ stevie album it's a dope hip hop recreation of classic tracks. hands down a must have for madlib fans
After all, it's just a mix album........2006-04-01
This album is a good gateway to Madlib projects like Yesterdays New Quintet. Before letting the next few reviewers get you all worked up about Madlib stealing people's music, consider that alot of hip-hop guys throw mix albums together the same way madlib's done here. As well as some mediocre, re-worked soul-jazz classics, there are some covers by madlib minions like Sound Directions and Yesterday's New Quintet (YNQ's electrified cut of "Footprints" by Wayne Shorter works out well here). I like the re-do of "Stormy" here, but all in all, this is a gateway, nothin more. I do recommend you put it in your collection though, and once you've got your toes in the water, pick up the record "Untinted: Sources for Shades of Blue" which contains all the originals.
An Experimental Must-Have.......2005-05-11
I haven't listend to Madlib since his debut, but from this CD one can truly understand where he comes from and how he grooves. His music is very different from traditional "jazz," and even deviates somewhat from Blue Note's traditional sign-ups. Imagine your soft, mellow jazz fused with a mild hip-hop 'frenzy' (so-to-speak). That's what Madlib has done here.
Do you remember when 'underground' hip-hop was big...back in the day? Songs such as: A Tribe Called Quest - Luck of Lucien, All Natural 50 Years, Asheru - Soon Come (Koolade Remix), Bastie Boys - Sure Shot, Das EFX - Mic Checka (Remix), Pharoahe Monche - The Light, Gangstarr - Moment of Truth, need I go on?
Ok now take those background beats and add them to your traditional soft-jazz song. Bask in the bliss that Madlib delivers in his CD, and don't forget -- appreciate.
Not His Best Album.......2005-03-08
Madlib is incredible at his productions.
Pro: used great samples
Con: not better than the original.
i give it more of a 4.5/5

this thang does it for me! thanks you madlib, otherwise aint no tellin when i would have discovered the works of brother andrew hill; his 'illusion' is vying for the position of my all time favorite jazz piece... over duke el's 'in a sentimental mood' and charlie parker's 'night in tunisia' ... there are many excellent songs on this thang! a few most jazz fans are familiar with already, but if you are NEW to the artform, then PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!! begin with this... it is a treat for any dirty-jazz-head like me.
peace yall,

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
Jazz vocalist Andy Bey didn't hold back in 1998, but he certainly knew the power of restraint. On Shades of Bey, he covers Thelonious Monk, Billy Strayhorn, even Nick Drake's "River Man" with his trademark baritone voice and a strikingly smooth delivery. No melismas here, Bey's tunes gradually unfold with a subtlety you never find in modern vocalists anymore. A great recording, and gorgeous tunes. --Jason Verlinde
Amazon.com
As in previous recordings, Bey adds another "shade" to the genius of Billy Strayhorn with his beautiful voice-piano rendition of "Pretty Girl (The Star-Crossed Lovers)" and his spectral interpretation of "The Last Night of the Evening (Blood Count)." Bey also makes an appearance south of the border with his guitar-laced takes of "Drume Negrita (Afro-Cuban Lullaby)," and the Brazilian-blended ballad, "Like a Lover (O Cantador). Add the anthemic original "Believin' It (Half and Half)" and a heartening reading of Leonard Bernstein's "Some Other Time," and you have ample evidence that Andy Bey is simply the most exciting jazz singer of his generation. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
Customer Reviews:
A Discovery.......2000-11-01
I have not heard the complete album only two tracks but that was enough to send my head into a spin. What an extraordinary singer. So much musicality and genuine creativity in his rendition of Midnight Blue and You'd Be so Nice to Come Home to....not too mention the incredible piano motiff by Ms Geri Allen on the 'nice' track. I am over the moon in finding this hidden treasure and will be digging deep to find some more.. A fan from downunder (Australia)
A Tremendous Singer.......2000-01-03
Andy Bey delivers some of the most beautiful singing I have ever heard. His voice is so rich and full of character, it is indescribable. Buy this album; you will play it again and again.
When you thought you knew vocalists!!!!!!.......1999-04-22
I know many of you are wondering who the hell Andy Bey is, and many of you probably think he's new on the scene. Andy Bey is one of the last great voices on this planet. I consider him to be one of the few living legends, and would love to see him get the credit he truly deserves. Listening to him sing "Pretty Girl" reveals that he is in touch with what he sings about. "River Man" definitely has to be my favorite. He grabs your mind, takes you to musical journey with him to search for the river man. After listening to that track "you'll want to keep a suitcase packed,(hoping that you can go on the same journey everyday). Just ask Horace Silver about Andy Bey. He's a gift to the world!
This is jazz singing at its best!.......1999-01-03
This is the best damn jazz vocal CD since the heyday of Sarah Vaughan. Buy this, you'll never regret it.
A blending of Kevin Mahogany and Sinatra.......1998-12-05
This CD is getting a lot of air time on KBEM in Minneapolis/St. Paul. When I heard "Like a Lover", I was compeled to call in to ask who the artist was. I was one of two calling in with that question. My words to the DJ, were, "Sounds like Kevin Mahogany, Who is it?" On the basis of that one cut, I've asked family members to add this CD to their Christmas list for me. There is a Sinatra quality to Bay's phrasing and range. One day after my call to KBEM, another caller requested to hear Bay and Mahogany back to back. If this cut on this CD doesn't give you goose bumps, check your pulse.

Though she's a relative newcomer to recording (Shades of Blue is her third album), Francine Reed has the pipes of an experienced vocalist. Her voice has richness and depth, not to mention versatility; she handles everything from classic jazz ("I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues") to up-tempo blues ("Wrong Man for the Job") to sensual ballads ("A Touch of Love"). She's even got a little bit of rock & roll in "455 Rocket." But it's when she's delivering those shivery, heated love songs that Reed really shines, whether her subject is love lost in "When Love Was New" or love found in "Beyond My Wildest Dreams." There's no doubt that Reed, who toured as part of Lyle Lovett's band for a decade, can carry herself as a solo act, and we can look forward to much more from this fine vocalist. --Genevieve Williams

but I had to share about this one. I'm very happy to have discovered Francine Reed. This particular CD is just addictive. Jazzy, bluesy... it's simply mesmerizing.
WOW! She's amazing.......2002-04-29
If you like the blues, you'll love this CD. I first saw Francine Reed in Scottsdale Arizona, in the early 80's. It's good to see someone with real talent be successful. If you pass up this CD, you're missing out on a real treat!
Wow...........I can't say enough good things about this one........2002-04-03
I have played this cd over and over and have yet to tire of it. Even if I get in a mood for something else for a day or two, Francine well be back in the player before the week is out. This has to be one of the best blues/jazz/romantic cd's ever made. I played it for a lady at work, which was a good thing, because she had to have one too! So now I can leave mine at home/car, and listen to hers at work. She's as fond of it as I am!
Fall off your chair good.......2001-04-22
This CD is fabulous. I've listened to it a hundred times. Other voices pale in comparison. I wish this wasn't her only recording, or I wish some other artist came close to making such fabulous music.

Nina Storey is going places. The appealing mix of blues, pop, R&B, soul, and plenty of other natural ingredients on Shades is proof enough of that, as is Storey's popularity in her home state of Colorado. Check out the gospel-tinged chorus on "Let Us Walk," or the left-of-center ballad "Crown" (during which Storey's voice sounds uncannily like Tori Amos's), or the self-assured, funk-driven "False Ideas." The album's a little synth-heavy, which detracts somewhat from the main attraction: Storey's powerful, versatile, expressive voice. That's a minor quibble, though; the songs themselves--all originals--are strong and outspoken, with plenty of variety, whether it's the bittersweet entreaty of "Face" or the testimonial "No Man." Storey is someone we'll be hearing a lot more from. --Genevieve Williams
Album Description
Shades is a wonderful collection of songs that span gospel, blues, alternative rock-blues, and a style that can only be called "Nina".
Album Description
Shades was originally released in 1997 & is an eclectic collection of songs that span pop, blues, gospel, funk, & alternative rock, in a style that is identifiably Nina. Nina's presence on the stage & on record is truly unforgettable. Her powerful, yet sultry vocals have been compared to Janis Joplin, Chaka Kahn, Tori Amos, Whitney Houston, & Billie Holiday. Yet Nina's eclectic soulful style is one that identifies her as a genuine talent like no other. 12 tracks. HapiSkratch Records.

The Goddess Storey.......2002-10-25
I love her songs and her voice it brings music to my heart i love her song "No man" causei think that many woman think that and i love the way her voice goes so high i love it!...And i love yes'n no but that is not on a cd yet i guess but i cant wait untill i listen to her sing again it is like a angel in the heavens! K-Pig is a great place to listen to her sing the yplay her quite a bit thats 107.5 and on sunday she has a show called stand by and Nina has been on there quite a bit she lOves it here in Santa cruz but loves to come back to her home town Well Thanks and i hope this was helpful to you SHoregal11
Captivating.......2002-01-18
I was captivated by Nina's voice. I received a sample CD of Shades and have never let it go. I've let colleagues and friends groove to her music before letting them know her age and race. Yes, race has something to do with it... I thought she was a mature African American songstress but to my surprise she was... you know and barely a teenager. Tracks 4,5,7,12 are my favorites, yet the entire CD is worth my weight in gold. Nina is here to stay!
amazing voice, but the music..........2001-08-09
I give this album 3 stars because I was shocked and amazed at what a beautiful voice Nina Storey has, however, the music just falls flat behind her. With her kind of energy I can only imagine her live. If you buy this CD you may be disappointed in the music and production, but you will never regret hearing Nina Storey's voice.
Wow!.......2001-06-01
This woman's voice is amazing, and her composition and lyrics talents are quite remarkable, too. She deserves a much larger following than she currently has. Is Colorado trying to keep her a secret? Several of the songs on here would be great for radio, if programmers weren't so determined to play only what's safe, and tried and true, for their target demographic. The songs "If I Were an Angel" and "False Ideas" are worth the price of the CD, and everything else seems like a great bonus.
I haven't even gotten it yet and I love it!.......2000-12-19
Someone who had read a review I did for a Tori Amos album wrote me a while back to recommend Nina Storey. Regrettably, I never paid attention to it until I got bored recently and decided to look for her on Napster. I originally only intended to download the title track "Shades", but I quickly ended up downloading about 10 more of her songs!
That anonymous recommender was on the money in suggesting Nina's album to a Tori-lover. Not to say that Nina's album is stylistically identical. The songs are not as blatantly intense, not nearly as obtuse, and they possess an almost-gospel sounding quality. But I think Tori fans may find Nina to be a (and I hate to use this word) more "pop" version of Tori. Her voice is beautiful, and it compliments great tracks bluesy tracks like "Crown" and attitude-intense tracks like "False Ideas" perfectly.
To sum it all up, I've ordered "Shades" and I can't wait to pop it in my car CD player and sing along the praises of Nina Storey!

Actually Pretty Good.......2007-03-17
When this group came out, it seemed as that they had a promising future with their first single "Tell Me ( I'll Be Around), but after their second single "Serenade" you didn't hear from them again. I purchase the album last year out of curiosity, and it was pretty good for the time that it came out. If they had better marketing then they probably still be around.
Beautiful!.......2003-10-11
I abosolutely love this album from these four talented young ladies! There are so many shades of life. Some being emotional, some soft, and some sensuous. However, when it comes to music there are four shades that come to mind: Shannon, Danielle, Tiffanie and Monique. Their hit song "Tell Me (I'll Be Around)" is a fun, up-tempo track that flips the script on men where the ladies portray the aggressive go getters in a relationship. Blending silky smooth vocals with a sassy, hip hop attitude. "Tell Me" garnered debate for its fun, suggestive lyrics and earned the ladies their first hit ever by selling close to 200,000 singles. That's not bad for their first time out. The song "Serenade" is a lush beautiful ballad that will shower you with lyrics of love. Their chemistry is electric.
These ladies really set the tone for their self-titled debut, a well done piece of work! Make this one your next buy! You won't be disappointed!
A GREAT ALBUM..........2003-04-28
I have this CD and i love it since I first purchased it in the record store during the time when it came out. I even bought the "Tell Me (I'll be Around)" on cassette single, during when it came out. i also purchased the "Serenade" single on cassette and CD. I loved the album, it's real real good. I listen to it alot. These are four talented beautiful ladies with great voices! I hope they come back with another album. Like they say in eventually "We can conquer almost anything, show the world we can be anything so the hopes and dreams of yesterday and wishes that u make today come true" That is probably my favorite song on the CD! other standout tracks are "Serenade (For You)," "Tell Me (I'll Be Around)," "I Believe," and "How Deep Is Your Love"
i highly recommend this album! You can listen to the album from start to finish without skipping any tracks! there's not one single BAD song on this album here! u get nothin but GREAT music on this one! and even a Bonus Track! what more could u ask for? GET THIS ALBUM NOW!!...
Make this your next buy.......2003-04-20
It is a great cd full of great songs and is truely a great buy. I can not stop listening to it. I can't till they come out with another cd. Can you please make the picture bigger or an option to make it bigger because I try to print out the cover 4 my friend to buy it but it is really small and my friend can not see what the cover looks like.
Okay c.d........2001-03-29
The songs are really cool but not as great as some other r&b albums. Songs such as eventually, serenade, tell me are worthwhile listening most of the time. The others songs are either good listening to for a few days or is just not that great. This is a classic if you want to listen to something that is not modern these days.

Album Description
Kevin Hendrickson may be the only man on earth who has started two separate buccaneer-themed rock bands. His signature melodies fueled Pirate Jenny in the mid-90s and later helped launch Captain Bogg & Salty's successful "Bedtime Stories for Pirates" CD.
Now Ship to Shore finds Hendrickson again breaking the pop mold with a variety of sounds and styles from the searing rock of "Let It Show" to the nostalgic folk of "Gumbo Jim." Though the album is technically non-themed (at least compared with previous releases) a theme of optimism emerges among tender ballads and blue-eyed soul echoing the songwriting craft of Squeeze or XTC, and the humor of They Might Be Giants.
Ship to Shore features the first-rate rhythm section of Tony Lash and Eric Furlong of Portland's Sunset Valley, John Morgan of Pirate Jenny, and Dave Owen of Captain Bogg & Salty. Other members of Captain Bogg & Salty also contribute their musical skills. The album was engineered by Jeff Saltzman.
The song "If I Could Make My Dreams Into Movies" was recently featured in the ABC Family Channel series "Knock First."
Customer Reviews:
Perfecting the craft!.......2003-08-16
Kevin Hendrickson has been involved in several recording projects -- including Pirate Jenny, Captain Bogg and Salty, and PKExplosion. This is his first 'solo' album, but it is a graceful extension to his other work. With top-notch production and recording, this album is very rich and smooth. The lyrics show a tender side, working with the vulnerable-sounding vocals. The music is pure pop -- in the best way! The songwriting is great, with a refined sense of melody and harmony; a variety of instruments weave in and out, creating a multi-layer texture. My favorite has to be the uptempo romp "Love's Villains."

Customer Reviews:
excellent vocals and variety.......2001-08-02
This is a well produced disc with a sharp rhythm section accented by horns on almost every track and sweet backup vocals from the ladies that contrast nicely with Blues Boy's gravelly voice. His vocals are one of the highlights of the album, he often sounds remarkably like B.B. King.
The lyrics are on the humorous side, and the opening track "I'm gonna marry my mother-in-law" is quite racy.
I enjoyed the variety of styles included, ranging from blues to funk to R&B. All are well executed. My favorite track is "I've been shacking" which has a fat groove, lots of energy and is catchy as hell.
Blues Boy won't win any special attention for his guitar playing which only stands out on a couple of tracks. Overall I found this disc to be a pleasant surprise.
