Trumpeter Steven Bernstein is not your typical jazz cat. First off, he plays a slide trumpet. Secondly, it's not often you find a downtown musician interested in playing music that is both accessible and humorous. Thus, it's no surprise that his band the Sex Mob (with special guest John Medeski on organ) does select renditions of songs from five James Bond flicks. Bernstein captures the original sophisticated feel of the music, mostly composed by John Barry. Tunes like "Battle at Piz Gloria" are subdued and dreamy, while the carnival-like "007" is more upbeat, sounding like it was played by a bunch of drunken spy-sailors on furlough. Something that will make you scratch your head, tap your foot, and giggle, Sex Mob Does Bond captures everything that is fun and quirky about this band, and makes a great tribute album in the process. Mission accomplished. --Tad Hendrickson

Knitting Factory.......2006-11-15
I saw Sex Mob with Medeski at the Knitting Factory in NYC back around 2000 and they played nothing but Bond songs. It was not what I expected walking in but it was an absolutely fantastic show. If this disc is anyhting like the live show, you will be more than satisfied buying the albumn.
Interesting.......2006-02-02
Sampling this CD, I thought that this would be the best album to date from this band. So I bought it. Indeed, the sound was bigger than any of the other albums, and the production was better.
But what about the content? Well, to be honest, I thought it dragged a little bit. The first track "Dr. Yes" and the fourth track "007" were the highlights for me. They weren't too long, they grooved, and they were very exhilarating. "007" really was great, perhaps the tastiest 7/8 I have ever heard, though the horns were a bit much at times.
Some of the songs were mediocre. "This Never Happened" and "Teasing the Korean" really began to bore me after a while.
So, defintely not their best, but it's still listenable.
ULTRA COOL !!!.......2005-02-02
When I first popped this baby into the cd player I thought "...heh, this really STINKS!!! These guys are WAY OUTTA TUNE!!!"...but I listened on, & caught on. This is ONE HELLUVA cd!!! I play this OFTEN, especially since I love Bond music ...THIS IS A GREAT WACKED-OUT JAZZY & FRESH!!! approach to music which if always listened to can become stale & static, if only by repetition. Buy this...enjoy...
oh behave..........................................................2002-07-05
From now on, any Austin Powers film which does not feature
this band, I am going to pan!
Nothing is cooler than this CD.......2002-06-30
Great Sex Mob de/reconstruction of Bond music. I thought I never wanted to hear "Nobody does it better" ever again. Now, I can't stop playing it. Same goes for "Bond with Bongos"
