For his first recording under his own name, Bill Frisell, then ECM Records house guitarist, presented nine of his compositions in the most personal way, going it alone on four pieces with just overdubs of his guitars and playing the other five in duet with bassist Arild Andersen. The 1982 recording is a remarkable debut, filled with such light and calm that its originality might go overlooked. Frisell was already defining an original style in the mix of acoustic and electronic elements, simplifying melodic materials while bending pitch toward another dimension. There are new relationships between time and technology, too, with time slowing down, multiplying, and building up in layers. Frisell uses chorus and delay to expand his musical universe, shaping the envelope of his guitar sound to suggest backward movement and heighten the impression of malleable time and space. "The Beach" approaches a kind of absolute stillness with layers of continuous organlike sound from the guitar, a soundscape broken only by the birdlike cries of Andersen's high-pitched bowed bass. "In Line," a more animated piece, gradually displaces a repeating Oriental pattern with swirls of folklike chords. The loose unison theme of "Three," almost bop in a world of funhouse mirrors, triggers particularly good dialogue between Frisell and Andersen, who's an ideal accompanist in his appearances here, providing secure, empathic support. --Stuart Broomer

Good for its time...........2007-06-18
but dated now.
'80's Heavy Metal is now so dated that this album lost all its fire only a few years after it was released, and most of those bands from that period have gone the way of the Dodo. The sound of this album is only one part of the problem: the guitars sound thin compared to the heavy albums of today, and the bass and drums are just completely lost in the mix.
The other problem goes to the songwriting: nothing wrong with the subject matter, but musically the world has circumnavigated the sun too many times for these standard '80's riffs to cut it anymore.
It gets 3 stars simply because it stars RJ Dio. I'm honestly surprised it's even available these days!
Watered down a bit, but still solid.......2007-06-01
Dio's debut album, "Holy Diver" was a metal classic, so Dio and company decided to do the same thing again. . .plus a few changes and compromises presumably intended to gain more airplay. Now, there really isn't anything wrong with this in theory, especially since metal like this was mainstream at the time anyway, but, in practice, these changes weakened the sound a fair bit. The biggest hit, by far, comes in the production. The guitars are weak and distant and just totally wussed out. Now, "Holy Diver" wasn't exactly the most bone-crushingly heavy album you're ever gonna here, and it was more about the energy and catchiness than the intensity. Nevertheless, this is metal, and you need some crunch, and "The Last in Line" just doesn't have enough. Beyond this, they've also increased the number of synths they used. I've no strict ban against synths in metal, but they need be used sparingly and well, which doesn't always happen here. They're not a huge problem, but a few tracks are weakened by poor synth work.
More significant than the minor changes in the sound, however, is the drop off in the quality of the songwriting. Most of the songs here are quite good, a few very good, but it's got nowhere near the consistency of "Holy Diver". Like that album, "The Last in Line" opens with a speed metal opener followed by the more mid-paced title track. Both are solid, if not totally remarkable. ("I Speed At Night" would've been a better opener, as it's another speed-metal number, but just better than "We Rock") "Breathless" is the first real standout, a good, driving mid-paced track with one of those unforgettable Dio choruses. "One Night in the City" is even better, and probably the best track here. It's one of the most overtly commerical tracks here, a quaso-ballad story song, but it's still the strongest track, with Dio's most intense, operatic vocals on the album.
The second half isn't as solid as the first, though it too has no obvious filler. (Though "Mystery" come close.) "Egypt (The Chains Are On)" is probably the strongest track here. Honestly, there should probably be more going on in it, as it's meant to be an epic, but it never gets dull, and Dio's overwhelming vocals carry the day once again. The lyrics are a bit silly, but that's part of the fun. "Evil Eyes" is probably the next best late track, and is fairly comparable to "Breathless", if not quite as good, though it suffers from some unneeded synth work.
I'm coming across as more critical of "The Last in Line" than I actually feel. It's a solid metal album through and through. Still, comparisons to "Holy Diver" are inevitable, and "The Last in Line" is bound to come up short when looked at this way. Still, it's more than worthwhile in its own right.
Classic sophomore effort; 9 out of 10.......2007-05-13
After releasing the landmark recording Holy Diver, the pressure was on for Dio to produce a follow-up that would do it justice. 1984's Last In Line was that album, perhaps not quite as perfect as it's predecessor but very close.
THE PACKAGING: Last in Line sports terrific cover art, with enslaved minions portrayed laboring in scene of ruin and destruction. The demon Murray (Dio's unofficial mascot) looms over the scene, his hands formed into Ronnie James Dio's trademark horns. Like most pre-CD jacket art, it was MUCH cooler on a 12-inch LP sleeve instead of these tiny CD jewel cases. There's not much to the liner notes, just a track listing, credits, and the chorus lyrics for the song "Last In Line".
THE BAND: The same lineup that recorded Holy Diver is featured here as well, with the rhythm section consisting of Vinny Appice on drums and Jimmy Bain on bass providing the foundation for the guitar histrionics of Vivian Campbell and powerful vocals courtesy of the great Ronnie James Dio. This core lineup is now augmented by keyboardist Claude Schnell, who was initially hired for the Holy Diver concert tour and wound up sticking around to record the next few albums.
THE SOUND: If anything the musicians sound even better than they did on Holy Diver. This band positively smokes, and the experience of playing live together night after night on the Holy Diver tour did wonderous things for their interaction as a group. Individually thay're great players; the tour turned them into a fully integrated machine. Guitarist Vivian Campbell plays with the same fire that characterised his Holy Diver performance, but with a refinement that speaks of greater maturity. Drummer Vinny Appice is powerful and dynamic, and bassist Jimmy Bain plays with his usual solidity and outdoes himself in terms of inventiveness; dig his bassline on the title track. RJD is in rare form, turning in one of the best vocal performances of his career. Although keyboards aren't heavily featured on this album Claude Schnell actually manages to contribute quite a bit, adding texture to the songs in subtle ways. RJD himself serves as producer on this recording, and the experience he gained in recording Holy Diver shows through tremendously here, creating a much fuller and more balanced sound. I don't understand why so many reviewers are clamoring for a remaster; most remasters I've heard only serve to screw up great classic recordings.
THE SONGS: Like Holy Diver, Last In Line is simply jam-packed with classic tunes. Opening track "We Rock" certainly does, and it's immediately followed by the breathtaking title track, featuring arching chords and RJD's patented fantasy-fiction lyricism. It's one of Dio's best songs ever. The fast-paced "Breathless" is one of the weaker tracks featured here, but it's followed by the great hard rocker "I Speed At Night" and the mid-tempo stomper "One Night In The City", which is a great change of pace and finds RJD pursuing more real-world lyrical territory. "Evil Eyes" is next, another great fast rocker (this album is full of 'em) with some killer riffing from Vivian Campbell, and then comes "Mystery", a mysterious foray into pop-metal territory that somehow works. "Eat Your Heart Out" is the one true throwaway here; it's interesting but is ruined by an awful chorus. The album closes with a true classic, the slow and powerful epic "Egypt (The Chains Are On)". Another of Dio's top ten.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Seven killer songs, one average rocker and one stinker. You really can't ask for much more than that. It's not quite as good as Holy Diver, but then what is? You can't really go wrong with classic Dio, and this album is a real gem. Don't hesitate to pick it up.
He does it again !.......2007-05-05
Another great Rock cd from Ronnie James, let's Rock !
More great music from metal's finest!.......2007-04-15
Ronnie James Dio has got to be the finest metal singer of all time! Another great release from Dio and this disc continues where "HOLY DIVER" left off. There is no filler tracks here and I think the title track has got to be one of Dio's best(I love the video!). If you have not heard this disc and you are just learning about Dio, this disc is a good place to start your lesson.

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02
This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.
Great CD.......2005-11-01
This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.
Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27
This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.
I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.
Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.
Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08
This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of
the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have
done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some
of which still show some of their age, but come across quite
well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this
disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to
get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any
more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to
try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's
early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.
If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!
The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07
I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.
I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.
I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. Director William Friedkin knows a thing or two about innovative, genre-bending film scores. He commissioned edgy modern-jazz player Don Ellis for his classic The French Connection and reworked Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" into the haunting soundtrack for the blockbuster The Exorcist. But even veteran film buffs were surprised when Friedkin turned the scoring chores for his taut 1985 forgery-ring thriller To Live and Die in LA over to British pop stars Wang Chung. Though they're still best known for their perennial rock-of-the-'80s hits "Dancehall Days," "Everybody Have Fun Tonight," and "Let's Go," Friedkin's early admiration for the band's often underrated musicality paid off with a tense, rhythmic soundscape that crystallized the era and locale of the film. And, though synth-pop has gained ill repute as a cheesy 1980s cliché, this album ably proves that it could rise above its stereotype in dramatic fashion. The Jack Hues-sung title track was also a minor pop hit. --Jerry McCulley
