After many years in the music business, saxophonist-bandleader-composer John Lurie has created a musical identity all his own. Best known for his mercurial work with the Lounge Lizards, Lurie has found a pleasant niche recording soundtracks for films like Get Shorty and Stranger Than Paradise. Accompanied by a number of talented musicians, including Marc Ribot, John Medeski, Calvin Weston, and other assorted Lounge Lizards, Lurie displays an impressive ability to create lively and evocative film music. While Lurie only performs on half of these compositions, his sonic vision is both distinctive and eclectic. Bouncing stylistically from downtown funk and progressive soul to chamber jazz, rock, and tribal percussion workouts, Lurie's mood-inducing orchestrations are witty, passionate, and consistently engaging. --Mitch Myers

5 out of 5 stars LURIE LIKES TO SWIM.......2001-02-08

THIS IS REALLY A GREAT ALBUM BY LURIE.HE PLAYS GUITAR MORE THAN SAX , BUT ITS VERY GOOD MUSIC. MEDESKI MARTIN&WOOD , MARC RIBOT PLAYS TOO. THEY ARE SONGS LIKE "NURSE" PUNK-CORE ,THE OTHER SONGS MAKES ME FEEL SO GOOD . LYRICS FORM "BIG TROUBLE" IS REALLY VERY FUNNY. A GREAT ALBUM. IF U KNOW TURKISH, TRY TO READ IT.

5 out of 5 stars Indeed, Lurie's best soundtrack work.......2000-10-29

This is a terrific album. The music is wonderful, playful, strange, rich, and all the other things Lurie's music can be; I have a vested interested in the song titles for "Al Al Al Al," "Sex with Al," and "Al is Hated" -- but I can still be objective here. Unlike the DOWN BY LAW or STRANGER THAN PARADISE recordings, recorded earlier in Lurie's career, the music here demonstrates the full range of Lurie's talents, and even show him striking off in new directions; there's a hilarious punk rock rave up ("She's not a Nurse" -- "...she only dresses like a nurse"), funny, goofy songs that could easily be Marvin Pontiac outtakes ("Big Trouble"), and guest appearances by members of Medeski, Martin and Wood and Marc Ribot. Lurie plays quite a bit of guitar on this release, as well. Worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Lurie's Best Soundtrack Work.......1999-10-04

Lurie says African Swim is his best soundtrack work, and from the sound of it he is right. Pity the movie was never released. Lurie blends avante-jazz and pop together in such a way that you would never think of this as back ground music. This album is extremely listenable, and a real treat to anyone who likes the Lounge Lizards. All hail the king of all cool!
