From Jazziz
"We're trying to bring virtuosic playing back to the forefront in music," says drummer Lenny White about his new band Vertú, a musical collective that features bassist Stanley Clarke, keyboardist Rachel Z, violinist Karen Briggs, and guitarist Richie Kotzen. "I haven't had an opportunity to play like this in a long time - where everybody is really stretching out on their instruments and playing up to their full potential." White is talking about playing fusion again, music that begged its participants to go for broke and show the audience everything they had in them. But will today's jazz audience be down with the "F" word? White thinks so. "I'm convinced that there is a whole new audience out there that will respond enthusiastically to this music, just as people did 30 years ago."

This sampler album of excerpts from seven other Anonymous 4 releases is a good introduction for anyone who is unacquainted with the A4's startlingly pure singing and virtually celestial blend. But if you fall under the spell of this outstanding a capella quartet, the present disc will become extraneous because you'll want to own the complete recordings from which it's drawn. If you prefer complete works to samplers, try taking the plunge with "An English Ladymass" or "On Yoolis Night." --Sarah Bryan Miller

If you love vocal music these gals are fabulous! This is a best of album, which is always good as an introduction to a new artist. It gives you a taste of their various albums, so you can go ahead and pursue the ones you like. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2007-01-10

If you enjoy music that takes you to a different time and place, you will get lost in time with this beautiful work.

5 out of 5 stars If Angels Ever Recorded A CD.......2006-03-16

Four female voices have never blended together so perfectly and beautifully as do those of the 'Anonymous 4.' Their CD titled, 'Portrait' contains a selection of tracks from seven other previous CD's, kind of a "Best Of" you might say.

If angels ever came down from heaven to record a CD this is what they would sound like.

Harmonious, Celestial, Purifying and Eternal.

5 out of 5 stars another exquisite performance.......2006-02-27

This amazing quartette is so talented. The Christmas cd reminds me of Christmas 50 years ago in rural England where I grew up. It contains the only rendition of The Holly and the Ivy I have heard that actually does the carol justice.

5 out of 5 stars Anonymous, but in no way generic.......2001-02-04

I learned about this quartet though a review in Stereophile magazine. Although they don't publish a lot of reviews, I've had exceptionally good luck with their past picks and have been able to branch out successfully in new musical directions as a result.

These four women are virtuoso female vocalists, hauntingly pure of voice. They perform music from centuries ago in the same type of setting that it was originally performed in, with stunning results. I'm generally not one for "religious" material (this is the first recording of this nature I've ever bought), but this music goes so far back in time that it sounds more primal than Christian overall.

A refreshing change when you're in the right mood, and something that can relax even you type A personalities out there (and you *know* who you are :) , I can suggest this one without reserve. You'll be adding a nice, quiet corner to your collection, and you'll probably wind up visiting it more than you ever imagined.

5 out of 5 stars buy this one first.......2006-06-29

This is not really a Christmas, or even a seasonal, album, more of a best of the Babes. yYs, they lead off with "The Holly and the Ivy" (and do it beautifully) but do not buy this as a "holiday music album"... or do... you won't regret buying it whatever your reasons!
This was my introduction to this band and I was absolutely floored. It lived in my car CD player for 2 months straight, and still is in the first section of my CD storage unit.... a rare honor for *any* Cd. It is also responsible for causing me to go out and try to buy every other CD the band has out, and I have not been disapointed in any of the ones I have gotten so far.
Speaking as a former music major, religious student, and medieval re-creationist, I know I can be pretty nit picky when it comes to "medieval" music; all too often it is neither medieval, nor (in my opinion) music! This is one of those rare exceptions that can manage to get you out of a chair to dance, while singing at the top of your lungs in Olde Englishe, Latin, or whatever. There isnt a bad voice in the lot (although some of the harmonies can be a bit odd if you arent used to medieval music) and the instrumental backings are pure gold.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Mediaeval Baebes.......2006-02-27

This CD has many songs from previous albums and a few new songs. It is a great introduction to Mediaeval Baebes music and serves as "best of" type of collection. It is billed as a "holiday" collection but I listen to it year round and quite often. The Mediaeval Baebes have a very unique and wonderful sound.

5 out of 5 stars Great choral versions of ancient songs.......2005-11-19

I first heard the Mediaeval Baebes on a UK double CD (Best carols in the world ever) featuring three of their trackss (Guadete, Coventry carol, Adam lay ibounden), all of which can also be found on their debut album, but my curiosity only became aroused when that UK double CD was updated and repackaged with a different title (Best Christmas carols ever) and all the Mediaeval Baebes tracks were omitted with other choirs replacing them. My research showed that they have become an established group (albeit with line-up changes) and are now very successful in their chosen style, which some may regard as classical but (since they sing with their natural voices rather than operatic voices) seems more like traditional folk music to me.

This is not a Christmas album in the true sense of the word although there are some recognizable Christmas carols here - rather it is a compilation of music taken from their earlier albums together with a couple of re-recordings and two completely new recordings. I would have liked some liner notes giving some detailed information about the songs but very little information is actually provided. Apparently, much more information can found in the booklets provided with the original album releases. Still, it's the music that counts and, when it comes to choral music, this is as good as it gets.

The set opens with The holly and the ivy, set to the tune that everybody is familiar with. I seem to remember reading somewhere that this tune, although old, is not the original tune written for the song. This is where liner notes would be useful - and as this is one of the new recordings, their original albums won't help. Given that the Mediaeval Baebes aim to re-record very old songs, it would have been nice to hear them sing it to its original tune if it really was different from the current one. I suppose it doesn't matter since they sing the song superbly anyway.

Other Christmas carols that you are likely to recognize are Gaudete (revived most famously by folk-rockers Steeleye Span), In dulce jubilo (a new recording for this album, it was recorded in the seventies by Mike Oldfield, who had a UK hit with his instrumental version) and The Coventry carol. The other songs are unfamiliar to me but the group perform them all brilliantly. The other song of theirs on that UK carols compilation (Adam lay ibounded) is not included, but there's plenty else to make up for that omission.

The instruments used to back the group (mostly played by members of the group) are interesting. They include a zither, a hurdygurdy, a citern, a glockenspiel, an astrowheel and three different types of recorder - not the kind of instruments to be heard regularly on pop and rock albums. I was particularly pleased to find the recorders here. Like many Brits of my generation, I was forced to learn to play the recorder at school (I did so very badly) and so the recorder has never had a great reputation, but when played well and in the right setting (as here), it sounds wonderful.

This is a fine compilation in many ways but it may be that one of the original albums (which apparently have detailed liner notes) will provide an even better introduction to the music of the Mediaeval Baebes. Despite my reservations, this is still (easily) a five-star album and I'll certainly listen to more of their music eventually.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasing tone.......2004-12-02

This is probably one of my new favorite Christmas albums. It is an absolute gem. It isn't an over-powering album with new or different things but they have recorded a few lesser known Latin Carols that are not given much attention anymore. Gaudete was one that stood out. The arrangement is rather simple and beautiful and the song itself is melodic in an unusual way. I have found that this CD has appealed to a fairly wide spectrum of people and would make a great album to play in the background during the Holidays. I think this would be the perfect thing to put on in the late afternoon in December while curling up with a good book or wrapping presents.

4 out of 5 stars A "best of", not really a Christmas record.......2004-03-27

Potential purchasers should bear that in mind. As with the Medieval Baebes debut album it contains a small proportion of `holiday season' material, but most of it can be listened to without embarrassment at any time of the year. (In my experience, all of it can - even on a warm spring afternoon I can't bring myself to program out `In Dulci Jubilo', `The Holly...' etc).

Another thing potential purchasers should bear in mind - this compilation winds up being a better "best of" than the album of that name.

It's more representative - career-spanning and able to demonstrate the increasing ambition and complexity of the arrangements, and of Katharine Blake's compositions. (Of course, some of their experiments with modern instrumentation on the `Undrentide' album didn't work, but they don't appear here).

It's also more enjoyable on a basic musical level - there are no over-repetitive pieces, no odd song-fragments...nothing that drags. Or maybe there are a couple of weak spots - "I Am Eve" which goes on a little too long, and Audrey Evans's rendition of "L'amour de moi" which is suprisingly weak, and no substitute for the original featuring the much-missed Dorothy Carter - but these are easily forgiven.

Even if you can't understand what's being said, even if you understand it well enough to spot the mispronunciations here and there, it will be hard to resist the ethereal beauty the Baebes' voices, and of songs like `Quan Vey La Lauzeta', `There Is No Rose of Swych Vertu' or `Blow Northern Wind'.

Amazon.com essential recording

This follow-up to Anonymous 4's debut "hit," An English Ladymass, is even better. From the choice of repertoire to the proficiency of the singing to the recorded sound, this is a standard-setting production. The 23 works--plainchants, carols, songs, and motets--invoke various aspects of the Christmas story: the visitation of the angel Gabriel, tributes to the Virgin Mary, gifts of the Magi, and hymns of praise for the birth of Christ. The sound is stunning: resonant yet intimate, warm yet vibrant. And while you can hear the individual character of each voice, together these four women make a sound of uncommon purity and beauty. The technical facility is evident with each closing phrase, each perfect unison. Critics are advised to jealously reserve such words as outstanding, excellent, and superior. But this is one of those recordings that deserve all those descriptions. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Simply Remarkable.......2007-03-24

I have 13 of their CD's . This one is the best . Four exquisite voices , painstaking research , facinating liner notes , all of their music has this in common . What sets this apart is the clairity of the recording . Each of these ladies have amazing voices that come alive with a good set of speakers . All of the reverberations and harmonics are there , and in phase . Turn it up and listen to the crispness of each voice on every note . This is one of my favorite CD's of all time .

5 out of 5 stars The Spirit of Joy and Peace.......2006-04-29

On Yoolis Night. Medieval Carols and Motets. Performed by Anonymous 4 (Ruth Cunningham, Martha Genensky, Susan Hellauer, Johanna Rose). Recorded in November, 1992, at the Campion Center, Boston, Massachussetts. Harmonia Mundi HMU 907099. Total time: 68'03".

Record companies who dare to publish CDs with medieval music are often glad if they can manage to sell a few hundred copies; this CD, the second by Anonymous 4, stormed to the top of the Billboard charts when it first appeared in 1993. And not because it compromised or attempted any kind of "crossover", but simply because both the music and the performance (four delightfully pure, unaccompanied, vibrato-less female voices: three sopranos and one alto) are so beautiful that even the uninitiated can catch something of the spirit of joy and peace that this disk captures so eminently well. Yes, there are seven pieces of Gregorian-type chant here, and chant was "in" during the early 90's, but my feeling is that it was probably the polyphonic motets and carols that made this recording an early music hit. The sound is difficult to describe; the only comparison that comes to mind is the swirling, many-voiced and often extremely beautiful, but also highly volatile, effect of "singing in the spirit" or "sung glossalalia" in some well-ordered charismatic and pentecostal churches where one can, on occasion, feel translated into heavenly regions. Much the same can be said of this disk, which, as one might imagine, contains exclusively Christian material from what are generally known as the "Dark Ages" from the 5th to the 15th centuries A. D. Well, judging purely by the music presented here, those ages were, perhaps, not so dark as we moderns sometimes imagine. And the Christmas texts sung here so deliciously by Anonymous 4 are, surprisingly, much less Mary-orientated and much more directed towards Jesus than those on, for example, "An English Ladymass" (the group's first CD), thus being a lot less offensive to my evangelical sensibilities and providing well over an hour of rapt listening, and that not only at Christmas time. Absolute five-star plus rating!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful voices great cd.......2006-02-27

Quite accidentally I discovered the Anonymous 4, thanks to the feature on Amazon.com that permits one to listen to an excerpt of the cd. I immediately became a big fan of this group. Now I am disappointed that they split up, but I intend to collect all of their works. An amazing talent.

5 out of 5 stars Great alternatives to 'Silent Night'! Buy It!.......2005-11-06

`On Yoolis Night' performed by the quartet, Anonymous 4 is another collection of works dedicated to the worship of the Virgin Mary from medieval England. Unlike `An English Ladymass' and `a Lammas Ladymass', these are more like `incidental' music for the Christmas season or, as the subtitle states, `medieval carols & motets'. Thus, these do not comprise a complete mass and there is very little polyphony. There is much more singing in unison and `chanting'.

Six (6) of the 23 tracks are in Old or Middle English and may not be much more understandable to our modern ear than the 17 tracks in Latin. While seven (7) of the works are described as `carols', including one entitled `Ave Maria', not one will be known to either your neighborhood Christmas carolers or to the Shubert fans among us. In fact, it would be very interesting to compare this `Ave Maria' with that of Shubert and to determine the history of this particular title through the ages.

This is a great change and relief for our Christmas listening after being drowned in `Silent Night' and `Away in the Manger'.

A generous 68 minutes of a different kind of Christmas music.

5 out of 5 stars A little holy night's music.......2005-10-11

'On Yoolis Night' is a collection of motets, carols, hymns, antiphons and a few other pieces in honour of the nativity - this is a medieval Christmas album. During the Middle Ages, when Europe was swept with adoration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many of the songs around Christmas would be as much around her character as with Jesus. These works deal with the various legends, biblical and extra-canonical, as well as the traditional stories of Christmastide, primarily taken from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. However, the earliest piece dates from the fifth century (A solis ortus cardine) to the polyphony of the fifteenth century, which means that this disc in fact contains a thousand years of history. Also included are a few anticipatory pieces from Advent, such as the Vox clara chant (the voice of him crying in the wilderness...).

These are beautiful pieces, stunning in performance and quite remarkable - compared to modern Christmas carols, these are pieces with depth and richness, certainly devoid of much of the mercantile and later accretions that have overlaid holiday seasons in the Western world.

This is definitely a holiday album with a difference.

-- Liner Notes --
This text accompaniment to this disc is very full, so much so that the booklet is not contained within the jewel case, but rather within a slipcover in which both the CD/jewel case and the booklet reside. The liner notes include a description of the work, a brief piece about the quartet, and the lyrics of the songs both in original language and in translation - all repeated in English, German, and French sections.

-- Anonymous 4 --
Contrary to the implication of their name, the Anonymous 4 are not anonymous. This is a vocal quartet made up of Ruth Cunningham, Marsha Genensky, Susan Hellauer, and Johanna Rose at the time of this recording (Ruth Cunningham will later go on to a solo career early, and another member will join - Jacqueline Horner). They came together as a formal group in 1986, and have been ensemble-in-residence at St. Michael's Church in New York City, giving concert series in New York as well as throughout North America. They have been featured a number of times on national media in North America as well as Germany. They then went on to yet more success, eventually performing more that 1000 concerts worldwide.

Their specialty is working with chant, monophonic and polyphonic music, and working with medieval texts. According to one source, 'The group takes its name from an anonymous music theorist of the late 13th century, Anonymous IV, who is the principal source on the two famous composers of the Notre Dame school, Léonin and Pérotin.'

The group ended a touring career of nearly two decades in 2004.

4 out of 5 stars Poison is way on a cool way!.......2007-06-13

You love them or hate them, Poison is one is the best rock bands, very skilled musicians with diferent styles and personalities that make Poison's music very enjoyable that the people can related to (even if the songs are old-from late 80's or 90's or Covers!)

This new album is pretty cool and fun! Each cover is very well performed and played with the Poison's watermark, the boys had fun recording it and people will have fun listening! Great deal that is digitally remastered, sound quality could not be better.
Very good were added: "We're an American Band" and "Rock and roll all night" (more recent recording and a classic that was almost lost).

Now, this cd could be a lot better having the next as value add:
- where is Dr Hook "Cover of a Rolling stone" from "Crank a Smile" (CAS)? Also is a great song under Poison's vibe-yes, with Blues Saraceno on guitars

-why recycling songs already released several times? Some of them are from latest release Best of 20 Years of Rock? or on the other remastered album versions? (Your mama don't dance-I think this song can get a record Guiness for been in so many CD's-, Don't mess around with Jimmy, etc)

- A CD holds 80 minutes room and Poison take between 4 or more years to deliver new material, where are more new covers songs that could get a hard rocking edge sound? What about: from Thin Lizzy: I'm a Rocker, Jailbreak (Cowboy Song could be great for next Bret Michael's solo album), from Van Halen: Panama or Unchained, from Judas Priest: You got another thing coming or Living after midnight, from Kiss: Deuce or Sttruter, from Motley Crue: City Boy Blues, what about a medley of Poison's "Let it Play/Sweet Home Alabama" from Lynyrd Skynyrd but jamming with Cinderella (Tom Keifer and Bret Michaels singing together this classic would be a hit), or Poison "Rock and Roll Bandit" -original version of Nothing but a good time.

-or what about 2nd CD added with:complete MTV Accoustic session (6 songs) with Good love or Let it Play-still unreleased-, remaster of Studio tracks from Swallow this live and Power to the People (9 songs), + "when the Whip comes down" from Native Tongue recoding sessions and news songs such as Talking Loud, steal the night away, Rock like a rocker, as others when they were Paris.

Please somebody at Capitol take note, I think I'm not the only fan dreaming about something like this. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars This is hot, people!.......2006-08-09

I simply wouldn't pay any attention to the people that gave this one star. I couldn't believe it when I saw that. This is some great fusion with Lenny White and Stanley Clarke playing as well as always. It was a pleasure to see them return to this form and I would happily recommend it to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars very watered down.......2004-06-28

this album was said to be a return to the Funk Fusion these cats had been long associated with but there wasn't any Bang for my Buck on this Set.it left me very cold.aside from a run or two I ain't thought about this Record since I first heard it.and anytime you get a Project with White&Clarke you would never say it was so bland.

1 out of 5 stars Return To Where?.......2002-08-20

When I saw that the 2 musicians who put the funk into Return To Forever had collaborated I didn't hesitate to jump on it. I feel like I was robbed. There was nothing close to RTF's "No Mystery" on this CD. Very little if any funk riffs. I won't be fooled again. Very, Very, disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A must buy for Fusion fans.......2001-02-21

If you love Fusion from the 70's and 80's, love Return to Forever, love the style of Lenny White and Stanley Clarke, you've gotta get this one. The first time I heard this, I was browsing through CD-Now's site and stmubled upon what I thought was a "never before released RTF CD". I was amazed to find out that this was a new release from a new band that featured two of my favorite Fusion guys. Turn up the volume and remember the incredible jams of some of the greatest Jazz musicians that we've ever enjoyed!

4 out of 5 stars the association of these monsters is always joy.......1999-09-23

Stanley and Lenny are,for me but for many others too, bass and drums genius.

There are many recordings whose theme is music for, about, or in praise of the Virgin Mary. This one does a far better job than most--from the outstanding musical selections to the excellent performances to the superb instrumental and vocal arrangements. The choice of tempos and the overall pacing are absolutely right, and the individual voices work well either solo or in ensemble. There's a huge variety of musical selections, from 10th-century Spain to 16th-century England--many are by anonymous composers, but Praetorius, Nanino, and Morales also are represented. These five performers manage to create an atmosphere that captures the energy and spontaneity of a concert. The only unfortunate thing about a recording such as this is that it may not get the wide attention and distribution that it deserves. --David Vernier

The more you listen to it, the more you hear in it. The small size of the consort give it an intimacy that coupled with the quality of the recording, and
the power of the arrangements and performance, really grabs you. "Heu, Teneri Partus" absolutely takes me away.

5 out of 5 stars masters doing what masters do.......2006-03-11

I came across this cd in my usual cd store in Caracas, just seeing Stanley Clarkey in the label I knew it would promise best class jazz. However, I was not prepared for the powerful performance of all the masters. Fusion, post-fusion whatever it is, its just wonderful music. As a travelling salesman on the road this is the kind of music that sets you in fire and makes the road the ideal stage to let it sink in.

Guitar reminded me of that 70's spanish virtuso Max Suñé who led the barcelonean group Iceberg. My only question is, why did they stop recording?

5 out of 5 stars Return to Fusion.......2001-07-10

I'm ashamed to admit that I did not know of this CD until 2001. This from a fusion fan who has an extensive Return to Forever, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White collection. This album is awesome. It is reminiscent of the hey days of fusion, yet it strikes me as being very cutting edge. "V-Wave" is one of my favorite cuts as well as "Toys" and the remake of "After the Cosmic Rain" from the RTF album; "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy". Kudos to Stan and Lenny for assembling these great musicians and bringing Fusion into the new Millenium.

I'm a big fan of groups like Sypro Gyra and the Rippingtons, so I thought I'd give Vertu a whirl. It's definately a step in the "heavy" direction - which I find refreshing. At times, Vertu sounds positively out of control, a runaway jazz-rock locomotive. But herein lies the beauty. When Vertu hits the breaks for a soft interlude, they become absolutely hypnotic. I love the intesity of this CD. One small complaint: at times, the rest of the band buries pianist Rachel Z, who adds such a classy, delicate touch that you yearn to hear more of her. Next time, give her some room!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD in my whole collection.......2000-02-09

I wish there were more stars that I could give this, because they deserve it. THis is the best fusion CD that has come out in a while. The mixture of all these different styles creates such a texture. Kotzen breaks from his usual metal background and plays melodically and beautifly. Great Cd - I definitely recommend it.

No one has recorded more innovative Christmas anthologies than Andrew Parrott--and this disc is no exception. The Promise of Ages presents a collection of wonderful seasonal music arranged for women's voices (all arrangements were either made or sanctioned by the composers). The selection includes 15th-century English works such as "There is no rose of swych vertu"; traditional tunes both genuine ("Deck the Halls" in an 18th-century Welsh arrangement for harp) and fake (J. J. Niles's "I Wonder as I Wander" and "Lullay, thou little tiny child"); rollicking Irish dance tunes; and 20th-century works by such composers as Britten, Holst, and Judith Weir on traditional Christmas texts. One ingenious and effective suite combines Peter Maxwell Davies's "O magnum mysterium" and "The Fader of Heven" with the 14th-century "Song of the Nuns of Chester." All of the performances are exemplary, but Emily van Evera deserves special praise for her beautifully simple rendition of the Niles tunes. This collection can stand alongside Parrott's The Carol Album as the thinking person's Christmas albums. --Matthew Westphal

5 out of 5 stars Superb Choral Christmas Music.......2007-01-20

Andrew Parrott, and the Taverner Concert and Choir have done it again !

This is a superb collection of traditional music from the past, some of it familiar, some not so well known, all performed so very well.

4 out of 5 stars Unique and special.......2007-01-09

Loved this album the entire thing. An English flavour.
Especially loved the Lo He Comes With Clouds Descending..
heart stirring. A great way to get into the Christmas
      spirit and lift your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harmonies and Vocalizations.......2000-12-13

Like another reviewer, I am thrilled at Lo! He Comes, as well as with the unfamiliar setting for Hark the Herald Angels Sing and the beautiful Sing We the Virgin Mary.

If you love beautiful vocalizations, especially rare soprano-alto harmonizations, this is the album for you.

5 out of 5 stars A "top ten" Christmas album.......2000-11-13

If this album contained nothing but it's splendid rendition of Madan's Lo! He Comes, with Clouds Descending, the album would be worth owning. Fortunately, the entire album is a brillant mix of voices, instrumentals and performance styles; the resulting album can be played several times in successiion without becoming repetative - no small feat for a Christmas album.

The album ranges from the 13th century Nuns of Chester to contemporary composers - Judith Weir - or nearly comtemporary - Britten, Holst ... with excellent sequencing so that no piece seems out of place.

The instrumentation varies from the traditional organ with SATB choir to fiddle, flute, concertina and cello. This provides the variety that makes the album so listenable.

For traditional Christmas music this album is a must.
