5 out of 5 stars Ahhh...the memories........2007-05-10

God, how I used to LOVE this song back in the day. Even now, I can still hear it in my head, and after I saw that GPS commercial, with an audio clip digitally remastered, I just fell in love with it all over again, even though it was only 2-3 seconds. Still, it only took that long to remember the timesI would listen to that faithfully. I've yet to own it on audio CD/DVD, but soon plan to now. This looks like something that would come from Heaven itself, to be completely digitllly restored and remastered!!! What a dream come true! Well, I'm sold, how 'bout you?

5 out of 5 stars The Moon And The Tower!.......2006-11-05

The "Tower" is the tarot card which depicts an interruption of the normal course of things. The "Moon" tarot card signifies action overcoming lethargy. Billy Cobham successfully disrupts the sluggish rhythm of typical R&B/Jazz and slips into the beyond with an energy unheard of during this period. This album was (and still is) WAY ahead of its time!

5 out of 5 stars Cobham-Musician And Composer At His Cleverist.......2005-09-13

Considering that 1974's 'Total Eclipse' is Mr.Cobham's third studio recording (and was already in pretty heady company in his catalog even when it came out) this is a likely candidate for Cobham's best album and trust me I have heard most of them. Why?Because with the exception of the closing "Last Frontier" (a drum solo) this album is basically devoid of alot of flashy bombastic drumming on Cobham's part.Just great use of sustained intensity on the wonderful "Solarization" suite.
The title concepts for most of these tunes refer to various astronomical phenomenon. And in the case of the ultra funky "Lunarputians" just an excuse to use aliens as an excuse to groove (a concept later used with vocals by a guy named George Clinton). Some elements of this album are very heavily jazzy such as "Sea Of Tranquillity" and the title track emphasizes one of the most important parts of this albums appeal-the tunes here are some of the all time best compositions
Cohbam has created.
It wasn't exactly a bad thing either that Billy had the help of 'The Billy Cohbam Players' as they are credited. These players include John Abercrombie, the Brecker's, and the magnificant Alex Blake on bass. And I say that funnily in tribute to some community radio DJ's in my neck of the woods playing acoustic jazz who love to list EACH band member followed by the instrument they play. They probably would never play an album like this on their shows but if I had a radio show I sure would play this....okay MASTERPIECE and proudly list the musicians and what they play because without Billy AND the mutual collaberation of these great artists this album would'nt be exactly what it was.Integrity at it's finest!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST.......2004-12-30

Cobham is the best drummer and on this album he shows his composing ability. Total Eclipse is by far the best in the Cobham collection in my book. John Abercrombie's guitar work is great and the opening piece will leave you on the edge of your seat. There's a little funk and a little jazz and a whole lotta great drumming throughout. GET THIS MUSIC IN YOUR HANDS!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best Cobham 70s work.......2003-09-02

This is my favorite recording by Boomer of the 70s! I just LOVE IT! That drum sound, that band, those songs!!
"Moon Germs" destroys me every time I hear it. Unbelievebal!

Two words: G E T I T ! !

5 out of 5 stars The BEST album by Cobham.....ever!.......2001-01-17

My father got me listening to Cobham, and I've been hooked ever since. He had it on vinyl, with one side destroyed, so I never heard any tracks beyond the title track. We have been waiting for years for this to come out on cd. We knew that once "Funky Thide of Sings" came out, "Total Eclipse" couldn't be too far behind. If you ever get anything by Cobham, THIS is the one to get. Highly recomended for fans of jazz/funk fusion and syncopation that will make your head spin. Buy it, love it, spread the gospel of Cobham, for he is the god of this genre.

British composer John Tavener continues to realize his spiritual obsessions with his work Total Eclipse, given its world premiere recording here. This much-anticipated collaboration with Paul Goodwin and the Academy of Ancient Music follows Eternity's Sunrise, which was a commission by the famous Early Music ensemble to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Integral to this performance is soprano Patricia Rozario, whose experience in interpreting Tavener's "holy minimalism" has made it almost second nature for her.

Total Eclipse explores both religious and musical elements, combining them to illustrate the idea of metanoia, or conversion, which is Tavener's focus here. The piece, a single movement in four parts, is structured using the conversion of St. Paul as a platform. The requested stage positioning of the instruments, voices, and choir plays a significant role in symbolizing Saul's transformation, which--while the aural-spatial landscaping is captured quite well in this recording--can only be truly experienced in a live performance (the work was premiered at St. Paul's Cathedral in June 2000).

A soprano saxophone (representing Saul), at times wailing with Coltrane-esque intensity (to "be played in a deliberately anarchic manner"), at other times questioning softly, is beautifully and appropriately pitted against the period instruments of the Early Music ensemble with a near chilling effect. In addition to the sax, Tavener--outside his now familiar simple use of harmony--employs several newer compositional techniques and instrumentation: the work embraces improvisation, microtonal textures, Far Eastern percussion instruments, and an earth-shattering ensemble of 19 tympani. Also on this disc is Agraphon, a setting of the poem by the Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos. It was commissioned by the Athens Concert Hall, and also features Rozario. --W.T. Arnold

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars timeless.......2002-05-20

I'm glad one man has the vision to write music this impressive. Total Eclipse begins with long, muscular, screaming high notes & powerful, rolling percussion. The over-40-minute piece also has ancient contrapuntal & choral harmonies & sections of very unique melodic lines like nothing else but not in any way directionless noise. These sections & the choral are fused in such a manner as to create an optimal synergy between them. Then, the 2nd piece on the cd, Agraphon, just over half as long as Totasl Eclipse, focuses more on the vocal & choral elements. It all aspires to convey a flash of insight that resonates through eternity -- new music composed of essential elements.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Tavener work.......2001-06-16

This piece (Total Eclipse) will shatter all preconceived notions one may have had regarding Tavener's music...and for good reason. Total Eclipse plunges the listener into the depths of hell and will also soar this listener to new heights. It is an emotional roller coaster.

The piece (depicting the curcifixion of Jesus) opens with timpani and alto saxophone having a field day - supported by strings. The saxophone screams out its notes and the timpani pounds out almost a response. Soon after this, the chorus comes in...singing a repeated word at Jesus (they are the mob).

From here on, the piece soars to new heights (at one point a tenor comes out of nowhere singing an absolutely heavenly melody)...at other times it plunges down again (the saxophone usually is involved).

I could go on and on about what occurs in the piece, but that would ruin much of the surprise.

A couple things that are somewhat bothersome. First off, I don't think that Agraphon should have been included on this CD - Total Eclipse compltely overshadows this work (which is a fine work). Second, Total Eclipse is 40 some minutes long, but it's all on one track...which could be annoying to some people.

Buy this CD - it will move you like music has never moved you before. It is truly inspired music.

5 out of 5 stars Your preconceived notions will now be turned on its ear.......2001-06-02

"Total Eclipse" is far far far far far away from what folks have come to expect from John Tavener. This piece is a musical interpretation of the Apostle Paul's conversion on the road to Damuscus. The opening passage is so intense, I didn't know what to make out of it the first time I heard it. Shrill, shrieking, wailing saxaphone that pierces the air with its intensity. In recent compositions, Tavener's juxtapositions of savagery and serenity are awe inspiring. The 19 timpani are enough to make one cower under their thunderousness. A lot of people will hear this not consider it sacred music, but I think in a lot of ways it is. This certainly won't be performed at a church service (or at least I hope not), but it definately has a sacred, spiritual quality in what it tries to achieve (and ultimately does achieve), a profound sense of change...or "metanoia" (denoting conversion of the heart.) As with most of Tavener's work, newcomers must display a certain amount of patience, as Tavener doesn't depend on traditional western classical convetions to create his music (he is one of the few composers that seems to have found a truly unique voice.) The drama, intensity, honesty, and sincerity of this piece make it quite moving. Parts of it move me to tears. If one adds to all this the idea that this is being performed on baroque instruments (minus the saxaphone) than this is also a great technical achievement as well!

As one previous reviewer said, "Total Eclipse" and "Agraphon" are pretty much on opposite ends of the spectrum. This is a setting of a Greek poem by Angelos Sikelianos (here the poem is translated into English.) This text will probably shock or surprise many people using imagery such as "a dog's bloated carcass." Tavener's writing for Rozario's (soprano) voice is quite unusual here. The musical interludes between verses add heightened tension when set against the beauty of Rozario's voice and the bizarre but beautiful notion the poem conveys. The writing for Rozario's voice goes back and forth between one of self assured contemplation and one of quirkiness. This is one of those things that has to be heard to be believed. A triumph of modern music!

5 out of 5 stars a different "shade" of John Tavener.......2001-04-17

TOTAL ECLIPSE and AGRAPHON are two newly-recorded works John Tavener has produced in associaton with Paul Goodwin and the Academy of Ancient Music for Harmonia Mundi. If you are familiar with Tavener, then this recording will be quite the surprise upon first hearing it.

I first played it on my car's system, which ordinarily is not the best acoustic for any classical music, as road noise often can interfere with quiet passages. I much prefer my living room setup with 4-channel sound and a subwoofer. In any case the first 30 seconds of TOTAL ECLIPSE nearly blew me out of the car. Not so much in a physical sense, but emotionally.

The first 4 1/2 minutes feature John Harle on saxophone with a string section and some 19 timpani (per the liner notes). This is not your usual Tavener opening. Rather, it is something much more aggressive and modern. It will turn your perceptions of what Tavener's "soundscapes" usually sound like by 180 degrees. What is familiar here is his use of the *ison* or eternity note, played by the string section. Little else in the first few minutes is familiar to this long-time Tavener devotee.

It is quite refreshing to find that once again, Tavener is exploding the traditional parameters that are the intersection of classical and sacred music. It is not for those looking for something *holy* like the Goudod MESSE SOLONELLE or Mozart's MASS IN C-minor. No, what it is heard is a new slate upon which Tavener is again re-writing the conventions of music.

On TOTAL ECLIPSE Tavener brings forth the formidable vocal talents of James Gilchrist and Christopher Robson. The use of a countertenor heightens the otherworldy *feel* of the vocal lines, buttressed at some jarring and effective intervals by the choir, who evidently were recorded antiphonally. Their voices are meant to sound heavenly as a *responsory* to the visions of Saul as he experiences *metanoia*, or transformation throught the power that is the light from God. Quite dramatic and I'm sure most effectively experienced live and certainly not sitting in one's living room. I felt much the same way about Tavener's oratorio WE SHALL SEE HIM AS HE IS, which for me is the pinnacle of modern choral drama.

AGRAPHON featuring the always-superb Patricia Rozario is a setting of a Greek poem by Angelos Sikelianos. It is a piece that is very much a counterpoint to the drama and intensity of TOTAL ECLIPSE. Firstly, it is sung in English and not with nearly as much force. It is more of a recital piece than a full-scale liturgical opera. It does display Rozario's gift for conveying the full range of human emotion through the voice, especially melancholy and despair.

I think the listener is best served by NOT listening to both works consecutively. They are of two completely different motivations from the composer's hand. They stand alone rather than together. My thanks to Harmonia Mundi, the AAM, Tavener and all the artists who have brought these 2 *modern* masterpieces into the world of *modern* music.

    4 out of 5 stars Great work...questionable recording quality.......2001-04-12

This is a truly interesting work. I tend to associate Tavener with his gentler works, like The Protecting Veil or Eternity's Sunrise. However, this is a dark, moody, and at times almost aggressive piece...it shows a very different (much more modern) side of Tavener, and it is an extremely unique side worth experiencing.

However, the recording of the choir just bugs me. At times it sounds as though they are singing into a can.

Ultimately, this is definitely worth buying...if it weren't for the actual engineering, this would be a 5 star without any hesitation.

        5 out of 5 stars Today's forecast.......a total eclipse.......2006-01-03

I have loved Black Moon since their 1993 release Enta Da Stage and I was one of those fans that hoped and prayed that they wouldnt fall off the face of the Earth after one album. I was far from disappointed. Black Moon released their second album "Warzone"(see review), the greatest hits album "Diggin in dah Vaults"(see review) and then Black Moon returns full circle with "Total Eclipse"...this album has vintage Black Moon written all over it. The trio's frontman Buckshot returns with full force lyrically and nothing has changed since 1993 except Buckshot perfecting his craft. DJ Evil Dee and the Beatminerz bring back that grimy production that has made them household names. My favorite cut among the many that sticks out would be "Stoned Iz The Way" displays Buckshot's on time delivery and the chorus is well placed. As a fan, I am far from disappointed and could only hope that Black Moon will continue to put out that real hip hop for true fans to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The Lost Art of Hip Hop.......2005-09-09

First off I have to admit, I just realized this album even existed until earlier this year. I was down and out on not hearing Black Moon and last year in December I just happened upon this album through Real Rhapsody. I was amazed this slipped under my radar like it did. H-Town has great artist here, but the radio station suck!! When it comes to highlighting new music, especially underground cats, the stations have lost touch. Even the college radio stations sound like the commercialized stations now. I used to be able to listen to the college station and be able to keep up with the underground pretty well, but I don't want to go to deep into that. Sorry, for the long intro, but this album is a must have. This is real hip hop at its finest. Not one track sounds like anything anybody else has used. Which is what sets these legends apart from the same old same old I just want a hit and get rich and quit *explicative*. These cats flat out love to make new original music. Black Moon forever gets the props!!! 1 Love.

5 out of 5 stars Black Moon still brings it to the table........2005-06-04

Ten Years after their debut album, Black Moon comes with Total Eclipse, which is almost as good as their debut album. People are saying that this is great, especially after the dissapointing War Zone. I felt War Zone was just ill, and don't know why people are hating on that one. But, you can read that in my review on War Zone. Anyways, Buckshot, 5 FT, and DJ Evil Dee come back with a damn good album. Man, the 1st track, Stay Real, cannot come with a better 1st track than that. was just I loved hearing Buck and 5 rip on commercial minded artists and letting everyone know what it takes to be a real MC. The beat, just amazing. F Jay Z for ripping that beat. He doesn't come close to sounding good over the beat as Buck and 5 do. Everytrack is tight, especially the 1st six songs, no skippage, Thatz How It Iz, where Evil even respins Bucks opening lines. They were some of the best lines I've heard. Actually, the only track I skipped was 13, can't remember the title, and don't care to because it totally sucked. Which is crazy, cuz every other track was just amazing. But oh well, nothing is perfect. Hey, get this. This is ten times better than Bucks solo ish, which only half the tracks were good, the rest were just garbage. Get this, Black Moon is back, and they still are one of the best in the game.

4 out of 5 stars HOT HOT HOT.......2005-01-02

Why is is that artists like Black Moon are slept on??? Why is that no talent ass Ja Rule more famous than these cats?? Black Moon is HOT. These guys have been around for a while now and have never sold out for fame and fortune. This album is great. The beats are nasty and, as always, Buckshots lyrics are sick. I HIGHLY recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album of 2003.......2004-10-15

Black Moons latest offering puts the Black Album to shame! This album, along with Gangstarr's newest is definitely the best of 2003. For those who were disappointed with their last album Warzone, Black Moon takes it back to Enta Da Stage with this one. The first song, Stay Real made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, yo! Just Blaze later took that beat for Jay-Zs interlude on the black album, but it sounds better with Buckshot and 5 Ft. rapping over it. Da Beatminerz produce most of the album with help from Coptic, Moss and others. Guests are all in-crew and include Smif n' Wessun, Starang and Sean Price. Every song is fat, you can listen to this album from start to finish. A breath of fresh air in a time when hip-hop is being saturated with corny overproduced pop music.

4 out of 5 stars TOTAL ECLIPSE - Ashes of Eden.......2003-04-04

My rating of this disc is really 3.5 stars

Not a bad disc - the production is well done but the album does not really come across as anything really new or groundbreaking from what you might have heard previously with other POWER METAL bands like SEVEN WITCHES, SHADOWKEEP, ZANDELLE, HELLOWEEN, GAMMA RAY, EDGUY and etc. Pretty much generic.

Some of the songs have some nice lead solos and atmospheres. ... This band does have potential for something possibly great or memorable.

          5 out of 5 stars What a Soundtrack!!.......2005-01-31

First, I love the movie. The story behind is really exciting and full of contents. There's passion, anger, emotion....
It really made me think! Leo is at the top in this movie!
When I bought this soundtrack I did not expect such a great score. As someone else before said this is not a "relaxing" score....this is is a compilation of songs which make you move your mind and think about life.

2 out of 5 stars No Comment!!! .......2004-10-21

5 out of 5 stars great quartet tunes taking you back to late 19th c. France.......2004-05-03

This music takes you back to bohemian 1870s Paris Using good simple catchy harmonies, Polish composer Jan Kaczmarek evokes the right moods, whether it's lively themes to go with the scene of people dancing in a bar, whether it's the suspense of whether Verlaine will abandon his wife and her mother on the train, or whether it's Verlaine at the end of the film heartbreakingly reminiscing about Rimbaud. I especially like the dark cello tones and lively violins underlying much of the work. This is one of my favorite soundtracks which I like to return to from time to time. It reminds me of Kaczmarek's fellow countryman Wojciech Kilar's Dracula sountrack. Anyway, this CD is a rare treat. I couldn't recommend it more.

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing?? You must be kidding..........2003-04-18

This music is anything but relaxing and anything but a background music. This is a music that makes you think, feel, and fully participate with all your senses in what you hear.. It touches very deeply but only those who are capable of perception on this wave length...

And of course, the CD takes ages to ship... If I finally get it, I'll be very happy :)

          5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!!!!!!.......2003-02-23

this soundtrack is without a doubt one of the best that i own. the music is beautiful and relaxing. it's wonderful to listen to no matter what type of mood you're in. each peice is pretty short and runs at about under three to four minutes. if you are looking for relly good classical music this soundtrack is a must!!!
