5 out of 5 stars Excellent meditations with explanations for beginners & others.......2006-02-09

I was lucky enough to snap this CD up when it was--briefly--on special somewhere else, and it was a fantastic deal! I give it 5 stars because, for me, it works on every level. The instruction is excellent (each track is followed by a reflection that explores how the meditation went for you), the guidance expertly helps achieve the physical and mental results of serenity, Ali Sharifi's voice is very pleasant, leaving adequate spaces for contemplation, and the gentle acoustic guitar music in the background is also just right--soothing and peaceful without being sappy. Mr. Sharifi gives sessions of four different types of meditations, and all are effective. The breath and heartbeat meditations I found especially useful for slowing down my systems. The inner voice meditation did not resonate as much for me, since it has a computer for the inner voice--using computers in my work, I don't associate them with relaxation--but the narration is conducive to making thoughts appear from your subconscious, and he does also suggest that you use anything you choose for your inner voice (theater screen, chalkboard, spirit guide, etc.). I also appreciated that although he is a Reiki teacher and past-lives therapist (per the description at CD Baby, which also has sound samples), none of these personal beliefs were imposed on these meditation sessions: He focuses on the essential goals and goes straight to the heart of the matter with simple, well-thought-out techniques. The CD is aptly named indeed. Mr. Sharifi states this CD is the first in a series--let's hope he does continue the series! The times of the tracks (each followed by a 2-1/2-to-5-minute reflection or conclusion) are as follows: Focus on Breath: 6:02; Mantra Meditation, 12:29; Focus on Heartbeat, 9:11; Finding Your Inner Voice, 18:45. Thus, you can listen to a single meditation with or without the following reflection for a fairly short session, or listen to several of the meditations for a longer session.

5 out of 5 stars My patients love it. You will too........2002-09-24

"Simple Meditations for Complex Times" is the best meditation CD I have come across in all my years as a Chiropractor. The 4 meditation options to choose from was a pleasant change which appealed to me. According to my mood, I could focus on the 'breath', or 'mantra', 'heartbeat', or 'inner voice' selections. I enjoyed the variation and felt my patients would benefit from this as well. The CD has been extremely helpful in assisting my patients to relax, lower blood pressure, and gain more serenity. I highly recommend this CD to all!

5 out of 5 stars Curious about , or seriously interested in meditation?.......2002-06-23

If you've ever been curious about, or seriously interested in meditation, you'll want to hear this CD.

It's full of valuable and useful meditation information including, breathing techniques, various techniques for focusing, visualization concepts, and not to mention great background music. It discusses how meditation sessions can be short or long, and done at home, work, or just about anywhere else.

The exercises are easy to follow. And as I listened to the CD, I realized more and more how appropriately named it was...Simple Meditations For Complex Times. I can't imagine that anyone who listens to the CD can't get some benefit from it.

5 out of 5 stars Meditations that work.......2002-06-06

I simply had to write a review. This man has a gift for easily guiding you into a meditation smoothly, safely, and effortlessly. Not only are his techniques excellent, but the resonance of his voice was made for guided meditation.I was actually able to meditate and I had all but given up. Thank you Ali Sharifi.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best CD ever.......2002-06-06

I have a very stressful job in Sales and I am often on the road. There is one thing that I cannot forget when I pack: this Simple Medidations CD is just amazing. After 30 minutes in my hotel room, I feel calm, de-stressed, so relaxed that the following morning, I am serene and I can deal with even the most difficult clients. I highly recommend it.

Now and again a songwriter appears, as if out of nowhere, and reminds you just how far and deep a good song can go. Tanya Savory is that kind of songwriter. In truth, she hasn't really been a secret. Town to Town, her 1998 independently released debut (subsequently picked up for wider distribution by Rounder), is the work of a mature artist in full command of timeless folk melodies, images worthy of classic country song craft, and knowingly detailed narratives that suggest the fiction of Bobbie Anne Mason and Eudora Welty. That may sound like overstatement, but Savory's visions--of small-town struggles, intricate relationships, and the beautiful and fearful power of nature--are rendered with a wise, observant eye and sung with an unaffected, clear voice. The sweet acoustic settings, provided by accomplished bluegrass and country musicians such as Wanda Vick and Nancy Given Gardner, are set tastefully around (but never over) Savory's stories. These songs will raise your hopes, test your heart, and lead you through landscapes you won't soon forget. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars 2 Blocks from My Back Door.......2005-02-28

Tanya Savory's "Town to Town" is an excellent folk set that is one that still reads well 6 years after its initial release. "40, 80, or 10" is probably my favorite track with Wanda Vick's fiddle punctuating this uptempo track about a love of travelling & America's highways, "Now just 2 blocks from my back door I can hear the whisper of 24 & even when I'm sleepin' it comes creepin' like a dream." The opener, "When the River Rose," is also another lovely little folk gem with Tanya's homey guitar strum and confident vocals, "5 miles of sand & a floodwall from the 50s, 7 engineers stepping on each other's toes ... it sure didn't count for much when the river rose." "Different Shores" is also a lovely melody with John Mock's tin whistle giving an ethereal setting along with Nancy Given Gardner's beautiful harmony. "Reuben Brown" is also an excellent ballad about a farmer grown old. "Town to Town" is an excellent folk set, one to seek! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars What Folk is About!.......2001-01-23

I wish she had more CD's. I like every song on the CD, which is extremely rare for any CD. This definitely folk at its best.

5 out of 5 stars This is what songwriting is all about!.......1999-10-26

This is a very refreshing breath of songwriting fresh air. The stories are compelling without relying on radioable hooks and the arrangements are spare, crisp and lovely. A beautiful blending of country, folk and bluegrass (just enough banjo and mandolin to tweak your fancy) sung in a nice clear voice. Buy it, you won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars A brand new sound ..with a familiar feeling!.......1999-07-02

One of my favorite CDs so far this year...thank God there is music like this out there that is a combination of several styles...country/folk/bluegrass/pop..Without being schlocky country or whiny tie- dye mentality folk or male dominated bluegrass! For anyone who likes Mary Chapin Carpenter or Iris Dement, this is a CD for you. Intelligent but accessible lyrics, wonderful melody and voice, and top notch production!

5 out of 5 stars Look to the sky, this your large band future! .......2004-09-13

With liner notes from producer/bassist/engineer Jon Ovnik providing perfect description of this great CD for we "fratelli musicisti"(fellow musicians),
I would feel wasting your time to talk technicalities of this unbelievable set from a "first team" selection of the "young lions"(Roy Hargrove, Avishai Cohen, Mark Walker)and decorated veteranos (Gary Burton,Neils Pedersen, Paul McCandless) international relative unknown in USA (Deigo Urcola, Jonas Johansen) and Chicago Stalwarts John Mulder , Ruben Alvarez and Kurt Elling
<Gee, I should have mentioned just the entire aggregation???>

Anyway, Milwaukee (not Chicago) favorite son (I live now in Chicago, I am just "tired" of our northern neighbor to be treated as a stepchild, HAHA..!) Jon Weber has put together yet another <modern> twist on the large band concept, more a descendent of the Mingus (or Charles Tolliver/Stanley Cowell?) concept of improvisation as integral PART of the composition, and as "multi-culti" an approach as the famous Mingus "Cumbia-Jazz Fusion" or the later efforts of Don Cherry, filtered thru a healthy strainer of Gil Evans,Duke Pearson , even the legendary Hermeto Pascoal!

Exquisite solo passages temper the harmonic /melodic concept of this Jon Weber, a composer who can make a complex chart sound acessibly sweet, while capping off pianistics fireworks in his solo passages , quite over the moon.

There has been some exceptional sounds coming from the next wave of composers, and it is FAR more adventurous than the initial neo-conservative "repatory company" boredom initiated with the dawn of the Wynton Marsalis Imperialist musical conquest of a few short years(it really has been longer than that, snoozzzzze..).

Guillermo Klein (Argentina) , Maria Schneider, Itibere Zwarg (Brasil), Le Bocal(France), The Italian Instabile Orchestra, and mid -80s forgottens as the Blue Wisp Orchestra, Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band(US?Denmark) would be some comparable musics to add to your collection AFTER you pick up this disc!

When you are going to wear your hair in a long tonsure, as Jon Weber does, you better be able to back up your "eccentricity", hehehe! And, like his "fashion buddy" Steven Turre, JW nails it!

(Eccentricity is usually a SUBSTITUTE for talent in the pop musics world, but I digress...)

Energy abounds, without substituting harmonic complexity, a beautiful concept of chords, IMO.

A real secret, hope not for long!

5 out of 5 stars best new jazz album in years.......2004-03-11

This album has it all. It swings, it entertains, it has amazing rhythm changes. If you are a musician, get this album and listen to it.. you'll be better for it. If you are a jazz fan, you will love the tunes on the album. The label is Second Century Jazz and I have to say, this is a great start to the new century for jazz. This album is a perfect example of that. The Roy Hargrove stuff is especially brilliant. But of course the main man is Jon Weber the composer and piano guy.

5 out of 5 stars A great new album for aficionados and beginners alike.......2004-03-04

Chicago piano master Jon Weber takes modern jazz to a whole new level with this great album of original tunes. Backed up with the likes of Roy Hargrove, Gary Burton, Eric ALexander and other greats, Weber's piano ranges from the frenzied to the sublime and many points in between. I see there seem to be no audio samples available here yet, but you can listen to some of the tunes at Jon's site http://www.jonwebermusic.com/
I'd particularly recommend "Jolie" and "Triska Deka".
Get this album. If you are a jazz fan, you will most likely love it.

This is a quote.........From simple, beautiful folk songs to complex, haunting vocal and instrumental arrangements.

            (Molly's own words)
Minneapolis, Minnesota. A great place to be as a musician. This city boasts an important platform for those of us living creatively. As a female rocker in the Twin Cities, I plan on taking full advantage of the opportunities available to me...At this phase in my musical life, I am playing a guitar & weaving vocal harmonies through an effects pedal in attempt to create something simple, yet intriguing and beautiful to the ear.

As influences in life are ever-changing, my desire to create grows in many different directions. My second CD 'Resonate' captures where I am, musically, for now...
It is a collection of observations I have made in life, whether it be through my own relationships and interactions, or my perception of others' paths'.
