The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

A Duke's Treasure.......2006-08-11

The "Guardian Of The Light" release by George Duke is one of those rare productions that will forever stand as a high-water mark in the career of a diversely multi-talented artist(I was at an outdoor jazz concert once in L.A. and happened to glance over to the next section of box seats and there was the man, himself - waiting to check out some sounds, also - I just nodded at him and smiled and he smiled and nodded back...)! I've owned multiple copies of this one; having purchased the original vinyl LP(with the black EPIC label)in 1983, when it was first released; and later finding the SONY/EPIC Japanese import CD version that only had the liner notes in Japanese script(which I still have). A remastered U.S. version also came out a few years ago that has better sound quality and included a copy of the original liner notes with the "dream" narrative and George's explanation of the album's concept. Now, the latest version is an updated Japanese SONY/EPIC re-release that sports the older Epic "orange label" and has the original LP's gatefold liner notes and graphics reproduced; though somewhat shrunken down to fit the CD booklet. This is my favorite album in my entire music library. It is a total production from genesis to realization and while it may not appeal to listeners who are only familiar with Duke's more pop-oriented endeavors, it is a most unique work from an artist who goes beyond the conventional standards in many ways. There is also a live concert video available now that is definitely worth getting; of a one-time performance of the George Duke Band in Japan in 1983 featuring an all-star lineup of Louis Johnson(bass), who has worked on numerous projects produced by Duke(including this one); Paul Jackson,Jr.(guitars); who has now gone on to solo star status with his own releases; Steve Ferrone(one of my favorite drummers of all time); formerly with Brian Auger and; most notably "AWB"; who also appears on numerous Duke studio productions; Robert Brookins(keyboards&vocals); a great performer himself; and singers Lynn Davis and Marci Levy(both "awesome"); that showcases key songs from the album and much more. I've seen several live shows of his with various groups of musicians over the years and can even remember hearing him perform onstage in Frank Zappa's band at a show I attended with my brother back in the early 70's(the only live concert I've ever heard that was mixed in stereo! - and which is what led to our both following George's career path and enjoying his music). He'll always remain at the top of my list; because of this record; which is an incredible artistic production and one of the best studio recordings you'll ever hear anywhere - anytime. Thanks to Tommy Vicari, also - one of my all-time favorite engineers; whose studio productions have always been first-class (and from whose recorded work I've "learned" a few things about achieving professional sound quality).

George Duke Reaches Out For Ecstacy!!.......2004-05-31

'Guardian Of The Light' is Duke's FINEST album of the 1980's
bar none.It begins with the orchestrated theme "Oveture" with a
high ended beat.The monsters "Light" with it's Clarke/Duke Project sound,"Fly Away" and the folkish "Soon" have a certain
art jazz/rock edge that nobody has heard out of Duke in some time.Two catchy R&B songs "Born To Love You","You Are The Light"
and the jazz pop of "Give Love A Chance" are three of Duke's
best ballads.And of course the Dukey Stick still offers up some
seriously dangerous funk in "Shane",the millitantly anti-war
"Silly Fightin" and the classic "Reach Out".He even pulls some
electro funk out of his pocket with the instrumentals "Stand"
and "Celebrate" then touches on classical on "The War Fugue".
Eveything here is built around a concept about a power
struggle between Rol-the 'guardian of the light' and Shane,a wizard who is in charge of all darkness.They are fighting over

crystals that expend positive energy;all as dreamed by a human man.The 'Guardian Of The Light' script was never filmed but this
'soundtrack' (as Duke calls it) is here and the story is explained in the liner notes.Not only the best thing he's done
since 1977's 'From Me To You' but the hardest JAM of 1983!!!!

I Reached (and got!!).......2001-06-27

"Guardian of the Light" is a good album, make no mistake of that (I can't think of a bad/ average song), but One Track stands Head and Shoulders above the rest . If you like the early 80s disco/dance genre then you have get hold of this album because "Reach Out" deserves a place in your collection.

If you haven't got this album, then you're missing out BIG.

This is definitely a George Duke classic. If you want to get your women in the mood...'YOU' is a must. It even gets my spine tingling with those sensual tones. I'm Duke's #1 fan in Australia. It's a pity he is relatively unknown here and therefore I doubt I will get to see him live! Oh well...I've got his beautiful music to listen to....at home...at work and in the car!
