About the Artist
Mack Avenue, a label that has in recent times released rewarding sets by veterans Gerald Wilson, Terry Gibbs, and Oscar Castro-Neves, introduces an exciting new talent with the release of "Eternal Journey" from trumpeter Sean Jones.
At 25, Jones has a mature style, a warm tone, an ability to caress ballads, a fertile imagination and a forward-looking approach. For "Eternal Journey," he staffed his quintet with brilliant musicians. "Tia Fuller has a lot of passion and feeling in her playing," says the trumpeter. "She can play both soprano sax and flute as well as great alto sax. Ralph Peterson was a professor at Rutgers when I was there and is a great mentor who has helped me a lot. In my opinion, he is one of the best drummers in the world. Charles Fambrough is another mentor and he gave me my first featured spot on records, on Zanzibar Blue.' He has long been a father figure to me. Mulgrew Miller is a legend and it has always been a dream of mine to record with him. I played with Orrin Evans, who is on piano here, while with Ralph Peterson's band. I love his soul and his swing."
The two young horn players and the all-star veteran rhythm section perform five Sean Jones originals, and two originals by Tia Fuller, as well as several lyrical trumpet-piano duet interpretations of standards. "What I wanted to do with this album is perform music that people could relate to and would touch them. A lot of musicians nowadays write music for selfish reasons, for the sake of being cool and hip. As a musician, I believe that it is my purpose and my calling to reach out to people and let them know that this music is for them. I wanted to show many sides to life and a wide variety of emotions in my music."
Sean Jones, who grew up in Warren, Ohio, heard, sang and played music in church from an early age. He started playing trumpet in the fifth grade, became turned on to jazz through Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue," and performed both gospel and classical music while in high school. "I knew by that time that I wanted to try to be a professional musician. In high school I started getting jazz gigs in Cleveland, Ohio at the Bop Stop and I played with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Since then, many musicians have been my angels and encouraged me. Professor William Fielder of Rutgers, an unbelievable person and musician, changed my concept of playing the trumpet. Ralph Peterson, Charles Fambrough, Gerald Wilson, Jon Faddis and Wynton Marsalis have been among those who have inspired and helped me."
Jones earned a degree in classical trumpet performance from Youngstown State University and has since gained his masters from Rutgers University. He teaches at Duquesne University and thus far in his career has worked with the Chico O'Farrill Orchestra, the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, the Illinois Jacquet big band, the Louis Armstrong Legacy Band, Charles Fambrough (being featured on the bassist's "Live At Zanzibar Blue"), Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell, Jon Faddis, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, altoist Brad Leali and the International Jazz Quintet, in addition to leading his own groups.
"What I particularly love about jazz is the level of creativity and freedom which I think is unmatched in any other music. With jazz you can almost go wherever you feel like going, no matter what the structure. The freedom in jazz is confined, unspoken structures that we need to adhere to, as in life." Now with the release of "Eternal Journey," Sean Jones is more than ready to make an impact on jazz and the music world. "I want the music that is within me to make people feel good. I believe that God gave me that gift and it is my obligation to use it to make other people happy through my music."

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

Album Description
Driving World-Beat Ethno-Fusion! - Pumping rhythms of the wild... droning, eternal voices of an ancient future
exotic nature sounds and rapid-fire percussion create an inter-dimensional journey into mindless spirit. Earthy didgeridoo with Australian aboriginal voices blend with UK techno-shamanic, traditional Native American Peyote chant, NYC trip-hop and Afro-Caribbean tribal rhythms... all fused into a thrilling dance compilation.
Customer Reviews:
Techno music. .......2005-11-11
This CD features a compilation of Techno-music supported by a little didjeridoo here and there. As such it is really not bad. However, both the title and the album description state or imply that the music has something to do with meditation and/or spiritual practices. This is not true: it's Techno-music in its purest tradition. The synthesizer-generated music is very flat with little or no harmonics.
Wow!.......2003-11-27
I was looking for a CD full of high-energy music. Wow! This one is awesome.
I'm constantly looking for great high-energy music for use when I'm working. This CD is almost too perfect in that regard as it is the type of music I can put on, go to work, and POOF -- 4 hours vanish.
My feet are dancing, my fingers are drumming, and my mind is in the zone. Great beat, nice didgeridoo, and awesome percussion throughout.
This sound reminds me of the high energy music that would emerge if you could somehow mix the music from the Afro Celts, Nomad (say ASIN: B000001ZBG), and Deep Forest. Delicious :)
I'm no trance expert so can't comment on its "trance purity", etc.
I'm no dancer so I can't comment on the type of dance genre this music best fits. Apparently I'm thinking of becoming a dancer, though, as I seem to have this urge to go dancing through the house like a wild man whenever this CD is playing :)
Summary: I agree with the summary on the back of the CD, "Pumping rhythms of the wild ... droning, eternal voices of an ancient-future ... exotic nature sounds and rapid-fire percussion create an inter-dimensional journey into mindless spirit". I wish I would have said that :) ***Highly Recommended***

Customer Reviews:
He's unreal..........2004-10-07
As a music student at Duquesne University, I've been fortunate enough to have studied jazz under Sean Jones for the past year. The guy is simply the best trumpet player I've ever heard. His range, tone, phrasing, style and attitude are all worthy of the highest praise. Even as a guitar player, I turn to Sean's playing for inspiration as well as improvisational ideas. He has a unique gift of being able to tell a story through his music without ever saying a word. I've been raving about Sean Jones to every music fan I know ever since I first heard him two years ago, and I hope this album gets him all the national attention he deserves.
Finally, Competition for Roy Hargrove.......2004-06-21
The sound of the trumpet has a dynamic range and contrast. For a bite, one might try Miles Davis or Dizzy Gillespie. For a dark sound, we can always find a mono recording of the great Clifford Brown. However, one sonic signature of the trumpet that is hard to locate in jazz hierarchy would be mellow and soft. Many flood at any musician that can emulate this rare sound. It's a scarce tone that builds another platform in the sound tapestry of jazz music. It's new; and new is good in jazz. I'm sure Miles or Coltrane would have concurred.
The soft sound is found in two `young lions': Roy Hargrove and Sean Jones. For them, the music texture (with songs anywhere from Greens At The Chicken Shack to Somewhere Over The Rainbow) is always soft; lyrical, warm, and ethereal. Listening to them is a lesson in the peace of the pace, the calm of the colors, the embodiment of the eternal. It's a slower-paced swing that very few have heard before.
In this album, the debut from Sean Jones, the title has a lot to do with the sound of the production. This album has an eternal, ethereal, and enlightened tone to it. It's has the bounce of any Joshua Redman or McCoy Tyner album, but a soft tone that relaxes the mind and soul like a Mahler symphony. Simply stated, this album is mellow and swinging.
I would recommend this album to ANY fans of Roy Hargrove, bar none! It's a soft tone that was prevalent in the 1960's recordings of Jim Hall, Paul Desmond, and the Miles Davis/Gil Evans sessions (Sketches of Spain). It's a new Kind of Blue, but a bit slower and more harmonic. Bill Evan's fans will enjoy the harmonic seascape Mr. Jones puts down.
I recommend this album hands down. As a fan who saw him play late nights at jazz clubs in the Youngstown area, I see he still doesn't cease to amaze me. Take a listen and discover the cool meets the calm meets to colorations meets the compositions.

Do not forget the Tibetan people.......2007-06-12
I have been to Tibet twice for shooting an IMAX film.
Warm, gentle, religious people. So many stories I cherish from my experience.
This CD is excellent, Tibetan music can be off-putting. This CD blends Tibetan temple music with western motifs into a highly pleasurable experience.
One of my favorites.

New Age 3, Tibet 1.......2007-01-14
The skimpy liner notes, mostly taken up with drivel about "mythical paradise", "dream landscape", and the "jewel mountain", tell us only that, "following the accounts of journeys, with an empathy sensitive to the task, Dave Miller has succeeded in blending the acoustic, spiritual original impressions with Western technology, thus creating a very special meditation for our untrained ears." Well, my untrained ears certainly heard much low-key atmospheric chanting (occasionally interspersed with the sound of passersby chatting, laughing and coughing), and I have no problem with that. But to call the music that one hears "Authentic Music from Tibet" stretches credulity. The overlay of "Western technology" is so thick as to overwhelm the Tibetan substratum with New Age synthesizers, drums, strings, flutes and god knows what else.
This would be a great CD to listen to while having a massage. But for a taste of what can be achieved when local sounds are blended skillfully with Western musical craftsmanship, I'd suggest you take a listen to "Mudanin Kata", featuring David Darling's cello teamed with the chants of the Wulu Bunun of Taiwan.
Not Great But Lots of Atmosphere.......2001-03-10
These CDs are for those looking for an audio taste of Tibet. No fancy arranged music, just the kind of stuff you would hear wandering around one of the larger monasteries: Nuns and monks chanting makes a soothing "true-life" background, some of those huge Tibetan horns, and the ritual music which accompanies the monks when they dance for the public. Perfect for the arm chair traveler while reading books on Tibet or the Dalai Lama. I liked it and found it an authentic, low tech change of pace.
