It may sound like a platitude, but if Roy Haynes is on the date, you can almost be sure the album is a winner. From his classic 1962 album, Out of the Afternoon, to 1998's diverse Praise, Haynes has set touchstones that most jazz musicians can only aspire to. His drumming remains remarkably contemporary, consistent, virtuosic, and forward-thinking. A bristling snap permeates this all-standards outing with pianist Danilo Perez and bassist John Patitucci. Recorded both in the studio and live at Scullers in Boston, Haynes (with Perez's exceptionally elastic commentary) is in constant conversation--juggling the time, dancing with the beat, creating rhythmic waves when needed, or simply playing graceful, immaculate swing time. Bud Powell's "Wail," Pat Metheny's "Question and Answer," Miles Davis's "Sippin at Bells," Thelonious Monk's "Green Chimneys," and a chunky Latin take on Chick Corea's "Folk Song" are a few of the high points. Another is Rodgers & Hart's "It's Easy to Remember," which features Haynes on brushes, a nearly lost drumming art here performed masterfully. Around Perez's generous reading, Haynes creates atmospheric density and majestic riffing with slaps, stabs, smoky accents, and space. --Ken Micallef

Very Good Music.......2005-03-24
This is a CD worth having in my collection. For my taste this is the best piano playing I have heard by the Panamanian Danilo Perez. This group is tight and grounded. I wish Danilo had continued in this direction. The only problem is the drum playing of Roy Haynes that becomes to up-front some times, I prefer more subtle and background drum playing. John Pattituchi's playing fits also very well with this group. A very nice trio.
Can't go wrong with Sir Haynes.......2003-05-03
My introduction to Roy came with Pat Metheny's trio record _Question and Answer_. I was immediately taken with his drumming on that record, and knew I had to seek out some more. This one gathered dust on my Wish List for way too long before I finally got around to picking it up, which is too bad. Here, the incredible dynamic tension of Roy's drumming is matched up with the Latin-tinged piano stylings of Danilo Perez, and virtuoso bass god John Patitucci. The results are absolutely ELECTRIC.
Part of what's great about this CD is that the songs represent kind of a sampling of the different artists Roy has played with over the years, starting with Bud Powell, through Birth of the Cool era Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughn and Chick Corea, to name a few. Roy has played with just about everybody, and at 70+ years, he's still tearing it up with the best of them.
I just have to shake my head in disbelief at the review a few reviews down that calls this album "really boring", because that's precisely the LAST thing I would call it. Just the playing itself is utterly fantastic, and the arrangements are very exciting too. Perez's interpretations of Monk tunes are particularly invigorating. What jazz pianist, no matter what persuasion, hasn't covered Monk tunes, if not done an entire tribute album to him? These guys know their roots and pay tribute to them with energy, vigor, and incomparable musicianship. You just can't pass up this CD.
ROY GOT CHOPS.......2001-05-08
I went to Borders and listened to this cd for 2hrs.My favorite tune is "QUESTION & ANSWER",listen to the interaction of this trio, for sheer eartainment,Roy buils a calvacde of sound with his drum kit,I use this tune as part of workout regiemn.Roy is a plus+70 cat ,that has not lost his"BRUSH stroke.Energy is what a master musician gives to the players and to the listerner. This cd is "Fresh".
Snap, crackle, pop.......2000-08-29
This music has a lot of historical depth, reflecting Roy Haynes' long career and multiple associations. There are songs dedicated to (or written by) Sarah Vaughn, Chick Corea, Thelonius Monk... The drums are front and center: I love Haynes' popping snare drum sound and his unusual rhythmic conceptions. Perhaps if I weren't a drummer I would have given the album 4 stars instead of 5, but as it is I have to give it its due.
Wow! (For the most part, anyway).......2000-08-19
Having had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Haynes live and on disc in several different contexts, both as leader and sideman, I have developed quite a love for his music over the years. He has the unique ability to push the music to new heights while not drowning out the contribution of his fellow musicians. So natuarally I was looking forward to this release.I was not disappointed.Danilo Perez, who brings a wonderful, unique latin flavor to his playing, seems to be genuinely at ease with the music while still being quite creative. Plus, he is just very fun to listen to!John Patitucci is a bass player whos career I have been following ever since his days in the group Tamarac. His stint with Chick Corea, though, really brought attention to his very solid playing.Mr. Haynes, of course is electrifying. Playing rhythems and counter rhythems which would cause most other drummers nightmares, are totally second nature to him. After all, he has been doing this for over fifty years. In the end, though, all this great talent would mean nothing without good tunes for them to create on. On this cd that means a selection of tried and true standards, with a few more recent works added in for good measure. The first half of the album consists of studio recordings while the second deals with live cuts from a stint at Scullers.Personaly, I prefer the live tunes. The band has a tendency to cut loose a lttle more and take a few more chances. This, as is often the case, brings the excitment level up a few notches. All in all, you can't really go wrong with this cd. Do yourself a favor: pick this one up, pour yourself a cup of coffee, and prepare to be delighted!

With the 'highpriest' Roy Haynes on drums, constantly spurring on Chick and Miroslav to reach their highest levels,we have a remarkable performance on our hands.Roy Haynes,a true surviver,is always on his game.I don't think he is capable of lacklustre playing.Always a suprise around the next corner, and the unmistakable crisp, clean, snap, crackle, pop 'signature voice'.A really energized set.Chick sounds like he's having the time of his life.He playing seems to sparkle when he is playing with Miroslav and Roy.These guys have a long history.Straight ahead and inspiring music.Enjoy

This is really one of those albums that have a special quality, a special magic inside. This is just one of those record you really would own. Believe me. One of those specials you search for going from one shop to another hungry for good music. This is it. It is REALLY one of the best records I own and in my case this means a lot because I own several thousands of Jazz records by masters of any era. This record is the document of a magic evening that Chick, Roy and Miroslav spent together playing the best music of their lifes. It is even, take note please, one of the best recorded trio music ever. If you are an AUDIOPHILE like myself you will find a very gratifying recording. Simply sit in front of your loudspeakers and let the music do the talking. No word from these guys is invain here. Everything is absolutly perfect believe me. This live album is one of the albums I take as a reference when people talk to me about Jazz trio. I don't own he other recording from this trio, the studio date, but I doubt it could be incredible as this one .. but I will buy it ASAP. The guys. Roy is jazz drumming , the contest is over. GAME OVER, Roy's the man! Miroslav is a very interesting bass player, with a big sound and very precious ideas and lines. And Chick .. consider that ususally, I don't particularly like Chick Corea's playing ... but in this case I can't do nothing but adore it. The program is very balanced there are standards and moments of a sort of classical music that is simply splendid. PURE MAGIC.
GREAT PLAYERS+GRATE MUSIC=GRATE DISC.......2003-02-07
A magic disc, with a great performance off all this musicians
Excellent.......2002-02-08
This is a great record. I'm glad I bought it. It seems that it's availability is limited - that's too bad. This is straight ahead jazz played by jazz masters - none of that weird stuff - just good music. It's one of the best records I own.
Excellent, excellent album.......2001-10-26
I'd give it four and a half stars if I could. I've had this album since the 80's and it just keeps getting better...not world changing on the order of 'A Love Supreme' or 'Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus', but a great recording of three talented musicians having a good night.
You get the impression that these guys were on tour for a long time: the ensemble work sounds telepathic. A rich and diverse journey, 'Live in Europe' starts out light with 'The Loop' and ends dark with a sublime 'Mirovisions'. Adventurous listening is provided along the way in the form of solo workouts from each member of the band: 'Prelude No.1/Mock Up' is about as exciting a piano improvisation as I've ever heard Chick Corea do (but I by no means have heard them all), 'Transformation' is a moody bowed bass solo, and 'Hittin' It' an atmospheric exploration of what must be a huge collection of exotic cymbals & bells.
Besides the great music, this album is notable (as, I've heard, all ECM releases are) for its sparkling production quality. Sound staging is excellent even on my non-audiophile system. It's hard to imagine how this was recorded live, as the stage must have been littered with microphone stands.
This album rewards close scrutiny as well as working perfectly well as background music when company comes over. A good choice for fans of any of the musicians represented, but more than that a stirring example of the fine art of jazz trio.

Inescapable.......2007-04-15
This album is unreal my jazz pals. It is an ECM double cd package so the price isn't friendly, but it deserves your attention believe me. I was a little bit perplexed in the shop because I read the previous reviews here where a couple of guys said the abstract part (the first cd) wasn't that great. Well, now that luckly I have bought this album, I can say that these guys are wrong, terribly wrong. But let's go on with order. The cover rightly have only the names of these greats on it. It seems saying "Corea, Haynes, Vitous" what else you need to know more? And infact you don't need to know nothing more especially if you like me, already own the other ECM album these giants recorded, "Trio music: Live in Europe". That album was unbelievable, but this one absolutly is no less marvellous. The first cd is made of eight abstract tunes that melt one into the other. It is great what can I say, the interplay is sublime and every player shines. The only thing that personally I could stay without are some parts from Miroslav where he plays with the arch. But it is only a matter of taste. 7 tunes are perfectly abstract tunes .. the last one "Slippery when wet" is a little more prepared tune. What you can hear are three giants for real in the process of creating new music. Some abstract, free jazz albums are boring. I know it. Not this one. The second cd is made only of Thelonious Monk's compositions and I can say, Monk never sounded so good, so right, so intense. I love Monk of course, but it seems to me that in this album these guys surpassed even the master. It is unbelievable how good is this ECM from Chick and the guys. I TOTALLY agree witht the guy who pointed out in his review Roy's drumming. I mean .... you can't beat Roy. He's the number one guy behind the drums. Here he proved why. And one last very important thing. This cd has unreal tones, it is recorded magnificiently. My plause. Hat off to ECM. This album is a MUST, inescapable if you love Jazz trio.
Fantastic Roy Haynes !!.......2005-09-28
Buy this album just for Haynes. The finest work ever as far as Hard bop drumming. The tones are unreal ! Monk's tunes are played like never before ( except by the master itself !).
A-list musicians, B-list recording........2001-10-04
With players like Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous (from Weather Report) and Roy Haynes, you'd think that this would be an awesome album. It certainly has its moments, but overall it seems to be a bit empty. The first half of the disc are improv pieces that seem to blend into one another. The second half (the stronger half) is a collection of Monk tunes. If the Monk covers would have been inserted between each of the improv pieces, it would have been a more enjoyable listen. The tracks would be a bit easier to distinguish from one to the next.
This is for fans of Chick Corea only. The general audience may be a bit turned off by this one. ...
Fine Corea, but not up to "Now he Sings".......2001-04-09
This is the album involving the same personnel as the classic "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" -album. "Now He Sings" is now recognized as one of the most important trio records of all time (regardless of the fact that DownBeat critics gave it one star back in -68, but what do the critics know?). Therefore it's quite difficult to top the groups prior achievment. Roy Haynes on drums and Miroslav Vitous on bass are splendid players but for some reason they don't play as tightly as in "Now he Sings". The members had never played before the sessions of the first record, neither had they between the first and this one. This can be heard, I think. Of course everything still happens on a very high level. This is a double album. The first one is entirely Monk- standards. Corea is well aquainted with the personal expression of T.S. Monk and treats his tunes with his usual wit and intelligence but at the same time showing great respect. Up-tempo "Rhythm-a-Ning" and brightly colourful "Round Midnight" stand out in my opinion. This album proves (as if it's not allready proven) that Monk tunes can be treated a million ways and still they remind you of Monk. A blessing and a curse, perhaps. The other record is totally improvised free music. The tunes are left unnamed. The big ears and enormous musicality combined with super-sharp reflexes of all the players make these short pieces quite interesting. They have a well-balanced sense of form not to extend the tunes too much and have picked improvisations different from one another (I don't know how many they recorded, probably a lot). This is not perhaps the very finest of Corea, but still I would seriously recommend it to anyone interested in this major pianist.

Chick Corea doesn't belong to the list of my favorite piano players, however this album is a very vivid and well done work featuring the incredible Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes. I wish Chick could always stick with acoustic bands, I don,t like his electric groups.
