Bolcom's dream of setting Blake's poems to music began when he fell under their spell as a teenager; he worked on the composition of Songs of Innocence and of Experience on and off for 25 years, completing it in 1982. This live recording celebrates the 20th anniversary of the work's American premiere. Following an early edition of the poems that assigns them a different order from the customary one, he created nine movements to form "a series of arches." Blake's own principle of "contraries" and his use of many poetic traditions is a perfect counterfoil for Bolcom's eclecticism, which encompasses styles ranging from solemn chorales, lush romanticism, abrasive, dissonant modernism, to jazz, folk, country, and rock. His interpretation of the poems, which he calls "A Musical Illumination," is sometimes startling, but always interesting, highly personal, and unquestionably sincere. Some of the settings enhance and heighten the poems, entering deeply into their spirit and mood. Others seem at variance with them: "The Lilly," a peaceful, serene poem, set to crashing, aggressive music, is an extreme example, and some stratospheric, jagged soprano lines seem to add nothing to the text. For some of the most arresting, convincing settings, Bolcom uses his well-known and beloved cabaret style, sung to perfection by his wife and partner, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris. Indeed, the entire performance is beyond praise. The work calls for a whole army of participants: several choruses, including a children's choir, a dozen vocal soloists, a speaker, a harmonica player, a fiddler, and a huge symphony orchestra augmented by electronic instruments and extra brass and percussion. The last produce a large number of terrifying explosions, both between and within the songs, as well as fascinating sound effects, like imitations of running water, delicate tinkles, and ominous roars and rumbles. The singers are superb; the women contribute incredible coloratura leaps, melting lyricism, caressing warmth, while the men include a heroic tenor, a commanding baritone, and sometimes sung, sometimes spoken scatting. Barefoot Servants is a collective of four friends that have individually played on hundreds of records over the years. Featuring Jon Butcher (Jon Butcher Axis & solo recordings) on guitar and lead vocals, multi-instrumentalist Ben Schultz (Rod Stewart), premier studio and touring veteran bassist Leland Sklar (Phil Collins, James Taylor) and drummer Neal Wilkinson (Artie Traum), Barefoot Servants 2 is the completion of an idea that surfaced 18 months ago a follow-up to their 1994 self-titled CD. Although the bands 94 CD had a decidedly bluesier identity, Ben Schultz calls the new CD, The one we probably should have made then and finally made now. The new disc is definitely more a product of all the music the four of us have loved and been a part of all of our lives. Barefoot Servants 2 is full of inspired playing, accessible songs, honest stories, and street-level portraits by musicians with a great deal of personal experience. As Leland Sklar stated, Weve been around and been part of a lot of music history. With Barefoot Servants 2 we accomplished all our personal goals to make a really honest record that we all believed in and can be proud of. Thats saying a lot considering some of the records weve played on.

The Stick Game is a traditional game that is played by Northwest area tribes and some tribes in British Columbia. It's a game of chance, that at one time was used as an ice breaker between tribes when they would gather. Today, these games are still played.
This game utilizes sticks, which act as scoring devices. There are also a couple sets of bones. Each set of bones include one with a stripe around it, and one without a stripe, which is the bone the opposing team tries to guess as it is hiding in the hand of a player on the opposing team. The team that has the bones and can keep the opposing team from Guessing the correct bone wins sticks, until the game is finally won by the winning of the Kick Stick.
There are also the Stick Game songs. These songs are used to both distract the other team, and to pump your team up during the game. This recording is dedicated to the people who keep the Stick Games and those songs alive.
