Buy This For Patto's Voice and Ollie Halsall's Guitar.......2005-07-06
"Give It All Away" may contain one of the ten best guitar solos of all time-- Ollie Halsall's manic runs up and down the frets are almost completely out of control-- almost. He careens up and down and back and forth and somehow ends up in the perfect place every time. It's a bravura performance on a perfect song. The rest of the album is excellent, but this is my favorite Patto album, and "Give It All Away" stands as their great achievement.
If you liked The Replacements' anarchic energy in the 80s, see what Patto was doing to lay down the foundations in the 70s. This is glorious stuff.

Refreshing and Surprising!.......2006-11-24
I would strongly recommend this collection to anyone who is seeking a new approach and sound world for these Mozart operas. Ostman opts for brisk tempi and transparent textures, but hardly ever at the expense of characterization or expressivity. The singers respond to the challenge with performances that bristle with excitement and fun. The cast blends with the orchestra like a chamber music ensemble, inspiring the listener to experience the opera as a conversation between the text and the intimations expressed in Mozart's musically and psychologically penetrating orchestration. Occasionally one may miss the lyric line and warmth associated with such great Mozart conductors as Bruno Walter or Karl Bohm; but the brio, virtousity, and brilliant insights of Ostman compensate with different kinds of rewards. Also, there is an intimate atmosphere in these recordings that is most faithful to the ethos and meaning of the libretti themselves. After listening to this period approach, my understanding of Mozart has changed radically, and I continue to relish the challenge that these performances have given to my interpretative sensibilities.
Some of the most thought-provoking recordings ever, combined with some of the most perfect performances I have ever heard........2005-09-14
First of all, I must state first that I was ANXIOUS to write this rave review. Ever since I got these cd's and realized the treause that is to be found in these recordings I just couldn't wait until I'd had the chance to tell everybody else about it... I honestly believe these recordings should be heard by anybody who is interested in this repertoire and music in general, since this are also some of the most perfect pieces of music in the repertoire.
As for the music itself, I am not going to write about. I think it is enough to read my last sentence to realize exactly what I think about it - and it is really just a must. That's composition taken to the highest possible level.
What I do want to write is about the performances.
Arnold Ostman, not the most known figure in the musical world, (not even amongst musicians- I come from Juilliard, and that name is definitely not one everybody knows) has created in the 80's in Mozart the equivalent of what Harnoncourt and Gardiner have done in Bach performance practice, i.e. has totally changed the conecption which was assimilated into everybody's mind regarding notions about how music of that era should sound like.
Trying to create a performance experience which emulates Mozart's period performance practice he changed everything starting from tempos, through ornamentation and of course- the voices themselves.
For us, most people indoctrinated by the post-romantisicm eastablished especially by Herbert von Karajan and the ilks of him, the first initial response will be a shock. The almost imperceptible swift tempos, the small voices etc. are sure to knock over anybody who haven't heard these recordings before. It might create an intial negative response but hang-on there, as the result is so much more gratifying then of hearing a recording of Karajan, Giulini, Furtwangler or any GREAT other conductor from that era- They were obviously incredible musical figures, but in terms of style and total perception of the piece it just doesn't work on the same level, in Mozart of course. (You'd still want to keep your Furtwangler's ninth copy...)
What is so great about Ostman is the freshness of mind with which he walks into every piece. Just like a real iconoclast
it seems as if he has landed from an entire different planet, and is just coming to conduct these pieces and give their debut. I can't give a more sincere and true compliment than that, musically speaking.
The results are the most fresh interpretations up to date of Mozart most important operas which also derive from some of the best vocal performances I have ever heard.
Under Ostman's direction it seems as though all the singers bloom and give their most musical and inspired performances,
holding on under the swiftest tempos in an admirable way. There is no point in pointing out names because it is as in a rule that the performances are just stellar one by one, even though not carrying around sometimes the most famous names.
This is not to say that all of the recordings in this set are equally perfect, and that I agree to all of the interprations and the insights given by Ostman, but you can't disregard the feeling that he knew EXACTLY what he wanted and executed it almost flawlessly. (the one exception might be small part of Cosi, mainly the overture, which was recorded very early in the stages of period instruments playing- therefore not always as perfect as you would have liked to hear it, but the performance as a whole is still the most beautiful Cosi I know.)
As for the packaging itself: The price is a complete steal, (incredible especially if you order it through other sellers, got mine for about 40$). What you DON'T get are the librettos, so you'd HAVE to get them from a different source. Either a different recording you might have, (you just might want one of the standard reference recordings one usually hears about like Giulini's) or you could just buy the librettos through Amazon, would still cost you very little.
Should not be missed by any terms by anybody who cares for music.

Best ever!!.......2004-01-12
Ostman created a stir when he made these recordings in the 1980s. And now it available in a collectors' edition box. I'm so excited. Sumi Jo's Queen of the Night here is even better than her recording for Solti. Ostman's Don Giovanni is the fastest I've ever heard, not to mention the most exciting. This Cosi Fan Tutte is Gramophone's reference Cosi. And this Figaro has many "alternative" arias that other recordings never bother with. Don't worry, the alternative is at the back so you can program it out. In fact, this is the only set of Mozart operas with ALL the alternative arias available. Even Gardiner does not have some of these. So this is a supreme set of importance.
I cannot recommend this too highly. Exciting performances now available in Decca's collectors' edition.

Customer Reviews:
A great Don (except for the sound).......2007-06-27
I have to agree with the previous reviewer that as an operatic production, this recording is superb. The only downside is the sound quality, which probably could not be helped; one must simply take it on faith that EMI did their best to re-master the original tapes (though I feel that they may have overdone the bass parts in some places). The singers are superb, and you can hear the stage effects, which gives the recording a charming immediacy. Anyone who has only heard only modern recordings of the opera, which emphasize "period" instruments and tempos, should be warned that Furtwängler did not feel obliged to stick to any one particular set of tempi - he varies the speed quite a bit, even within particular numbers, but this reflects an overall aesthetic conception of the opera which he formed over many years (this recording was made in 1954, the year of his death) and which fits together perfectly in its own way.
Moreover, like the previous reviewer, I am glad that EMI is releasing this set for a reasonable price, and it is a good companion to the classic Giulini set (although I would recommend other versions of the opera as well - even some of the "period" interpretations).
IT'S A GREAT ONE!.......2006-01-29
"Don Giovanni" is a very great, but difficult opera. It requires a charasmatic bass-baritone (or bass) for the title role, another equally great bass-baritone with a comic flair (for Leporello), two great leading sopranos for two very difficult roles (Donnas Anna and Elvira), a flawless lyric tenor (Don Octavio), and a pair of appealing younger singers for Zerlina and Massetto. It also doesn't hurt to have a sonorous Commandatore (a real bass)who can terrify Don Giovanni and take him to down at the end of the opera. This is an opera better left alone than presented even decently. The 1950's was a great time for Mozart singers, and many of them are right here on this live recording from Vienna in 1954. Cesere Siepi made the role of Don Giovanni his own and performed it many times (as well as on a commercial London recording which still is available). Elisabeth Schwarzkopf owned the role of Donna Elvira, and, in fact, can be heard on the EMI commercial recording made five years after this performance took place. Elisabeth Grummer was primarily a singer of the lighter Wagnerian roles, but her Donna Anna has power and passion. All of the other artists - Otto Edelmann, Erna Berger, Anton Dermota, Walter Berry, etc, were well known for their Mozart performances all through the decade. They mesh beautifully together in this performance, all under the exciting leadership of the legendary Wilhelm Furtwangler, who really finds the dramatic elements in this piece --- at the price of perhaps less emphasis on the lighter moments. Still, this is a towering performance, in excellent monophonic sound (yes, there are some stage noises, but no distortion or peaking). EMI has made it available at an incredibly low and wonderful price, and I can't see how anyone who loves Mozart would want to be without it under any circumstances. This is a great companion to the EMI Giulini set, and quite probably the superior of all the others.
It's a winner!

Album Description
Two Performances: (Philadelphia, Feb. 18, 1964; complete performance). Corelli, Curtis-Verna, M. Dunn, Bardelli, Giaiotti; Guadagno, cond.; Philadelphia Lyric Opera. Plus: La Gioconda (October 18, 1966; 71 mins. of highlights). Corelli, Tebaldi, M. Dunn, Chookasian, Colzani, Hecht; Guadagno, cond.; Philadelphia Lyric Opera . Booklet includes synopsis, biographies and an article by Steve Cohen about The Philadelphia Lyric Opera. (3 CDs)
Corelli sang Gioconda many times with the Met but never elsewhere%GâÂÂ"%@apart from these two Philadelphia performances. These are his only available Enzos, and this is their first-ever release. The CDs were made from tapes supplied by Steve Cohen, the official recording engineer for The Philadelphia Lyric Opera.
Corelli uses a mechanistic vocal method involving manipulating the position of the larynx. In dramatic passages he sings with his larynx lowered to the bottom of his neck, to give his voice maximum heft, core and brilliance. In lyric passages he repositions his larynx somewhat upward.
He sings caressingly in the love scenes with Dunn and with anguish in the third act ensemble. In both performances he is in wonderful voice and even interpolates a high C in Act I and another in Act IV. Above all, as in no other role, he expresses blind fury, in his confrontations with Curtis-Verna and Tebaldi.

A Blast From The Past: Corelli And Tebaldi in Gioconda.......2005-07-31
Where was this recording all my life ? Two of the most renowned soprano and tenor pair of the 50's, Renata Tebaldi and Franco Corelli sing their hearts out in full-blooded, passionate, fiery Italian in this powerful performance of La Gioconda. Ponchielli's La Gioconda is perhaps the most fiery, intense Italian opera in the repertoire.
I'm not much of a music expert per se, but this opera is, to me, a blend of verisimo opera (the vogue of the late 19th century and early 1900's) and Romantic Puccini-esque opera. Tebaldi and Corelli do justice to the lead roles and live up to their own hype. Further to singing with dramatic musicianship, they provide the work with beautiful tone, with the greatest example of how to sing in true Italian form- with deep sultry richness and vocal bravura. Very few tenors truly sing in the Italian manner, and the ones who did were old school- Mario Del Monaco, Franco Corelli and Giuseppe Di Stefano. Even fewer sopranos sang with Italian fire. Not even Callas had it. Rosa Ponselle and Leontyne Price had it and of course Renata Tebaldi. In this old recording, the sound is not perfect but has been digitally remastered from the old tapes and sounds fair and fresh. This is a rare recording in that it offers the same opera in two different performances. Both have Corelli singing the tenor lead, but the first has a no-name soprano in the lead soprano role. While she lacks the strength of La Tebaldi, that performance is blessed with mezzo-soprano Mignon Dunn. Mignon Dunn was one of the more illustrious sopranos of the Golden Age of the Met, and her voice is velvety, deep and dramatic as well. In addition, she was a very attractive woman herself. She immerses herself in her role with dramatic flair. Mignon Dunn should be in everyone operaphile's top mezzo soprano list. Whenever you can, look for other recordings of Mignon Dunn.
The second performance is that of Renata Tebaldi in the soprano role. She interprets the character with more vocal splendor and musical artistry. Callas sang La Gioconda and her "Suicidio!" is far more dramatic but Tebaldi holds her own because she is in fine vocal shape, with none of the whoops and wobble that Callas often used in her singing. Hers is a pure, clean, smooth, creamy, Italian sound. The fact that Tebaldi sang the same roles at the same time (the 50's) as Callas is what lead to the rumored rivalry between them. I frankly believe that there was no rivalry between them. Both artists were simply different in their approach on singing opera- Callas was ever the actress, willing to sound ugly and harsh for the purely dramatic effect in the textual passages of the arias while Tebaldi would rather sacrifice credibility in character in order to sound gorgeous. This same beauty vs dramatic effect was present in the "other" famous rivalry - Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sills and in the tenor side Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavoratti. This performance is a must have if you're a Tebaldi fan. Tebaldi died around a year or two ago, and she is fondly remembered as a great soprano of the 20th century and her legacy lives on her recordings. Tebaldi and Corelli were on fire on stage, and they had really great chemistry - watch the filmed performance on DVD or VHS of their La Forza Del Destino of the 50's in order to see what I mean, or hear their recordings in which they sang together, among these a glorious Adrianna Lecrouvreur and Andrea Chenier. This is a terrific recording that ought to be more critically acclaimed.

A discovery of pleasure.......2005-08-27
I found this opera becuase I was tracking Caballe's recordings... Alas! I listened to it once, and twice and a million times! I didn't know anything about this opera and it is now one of my favorites... I've read about its shortcomings, etc... Who cares! It has the geat prologue, the coral parts, and the great solos and duets... Everything is here if one wants to enjoy, I guess.
This was my first MEFISTOFELE, I got many more afterwards, but I keep coming back to this and to the DVD from San Francisco Opera (thanks for that visual feast!).
What can I say about the singers here? First rate! Sound is great too.
We don't get to see recordings like this issued anymore.......2003-11-26
In our day and age when corporate interests, contracts, and big egos prevail over the interests of Art, can anyone imagine a collaboration of four megastars for a complete opera recording? The most we're ever likely to get is a tired husband-and-wife cutesy that EMI supplies in abundance lately - a venture that attests to corporate interests before anything else. However, back in 1985, when Decca wasn't busy recording another installment of the Watson tragedies, it issued this incredible complete recording of Boito's most known opera with two leading lyric sopranos - Montserrat Caballé and Mirella Freni as Helen of Troy and Marguerite respectively. To make the set better still, Nicolai Ghiaurov and Luciano Pavarotti, both in very good voice, are cast as Mephistopheles and Faust. Sadly, this recording wasn't available for the longest time, and people turned to inferior versions instead. Well, you have got to hurry and get this set before it becomes unavailable once again.
For me personally, the purchase decision was mainly influenced by the fact that conductor Oliviero de Fabritiis cast the most demonic-sounding basso in history - Nicolai Ghiaurov - to sing the title role. Well-known for his several recordings of Gounod's version of the devil, Ghiaurov's recordings of Boito are scarce. His interpretation is of larger-than-life, no-holds-barred type; he fires all the canons of his huge basso for the maximum effect. His Mefistofele is definitely a ruler of its own kind, defiant and triumphant. As the title character, he holds the action together and forcefully propels it forward.
Mirella Freni's gorgeous silky soprano is incredibly suited for the role of Marguerite, Gounod's or Boito's equally. Boito's version is more touching and less rebellious than Gounod's, and there's a great achingly beautiful verismo-style aria "L'altra notte in fondo al mare". She also looks the part, and I can't wait until Decca opens up its vaults and we get to see her Marguerite on video. Freni isn't afraid to make an "ugly" sound when the situation calls for it, Marguerite's plight is vividly depicted and her nobility shines as she resist the love that's tingled with evil.
In a brilliant stroke of luxury casting, Montserrat Caballé (an equally good Marguerite in Rudel's EMI recording) is cast as Helen of Troy. While great diva's heyday is often said to be 1960's and 70's, this 1982 recording finds her in excellent vocal shape, easily gliding over Helena's difficult tessitura. Unlike most of her heroines, Helena is very seductive and even ethereal. Needless to say, Caballé's mesmerizing voice is a perfect vehicle for conveying these qualities of a love goddess.
Luciano Pavarotti's bright silvery tenor can sound a bit too youthful at times to portray a world-wary, chivalrous, and seductive Faust. But he heavily draws on the ardent and cajoling resources (familiar to his fans from "Rigoletto") to present a convincing, if not particularly likable character. Boito deliberately keeps Faust in the shadow of Mephistopheles to show that the latter acts like a puppeteer to the former. It's obvious that Faust cannot resist the devil's temptations and plunges into his new feelings heart and soul. The duet "Lontano, lontano", and aria "Dai campi dai prati" are absolutely lovely and sang gloriously.
A lot of critics said that Act IV seems like a strange add-on and takes away from the opera's central story. Well, with these singers, it makes for a great listening experience, regardless of the Act IV relevance.
Oliviero de Fabritiis works up a storm with National Philharmonic Orchestra, and the choruses are first rate.
The recording is early DDD and it's actually pretty good, save for just a couple of moments when singers' voices overwhelm the equipment. Most buyers' choice will be between this set and EMI budget set with Normal Treigle in title role. While the latter set is very good, it does not have a) digital recording, b) a Helen of Caballé's caliber, c) Nicolai Ghiaurov (although Treigle is an excellent, if smaller, basso), and d) Decca's wonderful presentation with 186-page booklet and slip case. These factors combined swayed this customer in favor of Decca's set.
Beautiful!.......2003-04-06
This is a vastly underrated opera. Filled with some of the most beautifully melodic music, this recording is a must for all Italian opera lovers. Yes, the story may lack focus, with a rather strange trip to Helen of Troy in the last act.
The orchestra is in top shape under the baton with Fabritiis. He conducts with strength and sweep.
Freni is the star here. In her long scene in act II she sounds like the crazed Margarita, full of passion, anger, tenderness and great breath control. She is so dramatic, dropping into chest register frequently, never covered by the orchestra as so many sopranos are (who don't use chest). Her spoken "Taci" in act II gives me shivers and goose bumps. The death scene is breath-taking!
Pavarotti also gives a magnificent recording, done well before he sang as if he doesn't care. Golden tone and excellent diction help him build the character of Faust. He and Freni blend beautifully in their "Lontano" duet, some of the most incredible singing I've ever heard.
Ghiaurov sings very well, as well. His voice is HUGE and so well suited to devils. A few moments of strain add to the dominance of the character.
Caballe is Elena of Troy. I've never been a great fan of her singing but she is dramatic and passionate. Her duet with Pavarotti is one of my favorite all time melodies that always makes me smile. Her high C at the end is less that perfect (I wish Freni had taken the role as well).
Great recording of a great opera! Highly recommended

Customer Reviews:
Incredibly Facilitated Soprano!.......2005-03-17
Madame Arangi-Lombardi was a great singer with a rich recorded legacy. Her virtues are so amazing as a singer that it is difficult to know where to start but perhaps with the fact that she began as a mezzo and never lost that significantly rich sound throughout her range. The piano tones are very strong and her diminuendi are unrivalled perhaps in the history of recorded song. Her legato is unique and flawless.
Her portrayals of Verdi roles were said to be "unforgettable" and a "model of style." You only need listen to Aida, Ernani, Forza, Trovatore, and I Lombardi with score in hand to observe how obediant she was without losing individuality or expression. She is perfect in Verdi. Her Vissi d'arte is quite similar stylistically to that of Caballe.
She finished comparatively early and reports are that the once glorified high notes became quite strained leaving many to believe that she was always a mezzo, but mezzo or soprano this woman had skills!

The Mastersinger.......2000-06-24
If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

Early Verdi at its best.......2001-03-13
This recording finds Caballe in the very best voice, and Christoff at the top of his game. The tenor, Bruno Prevdi, was one of those three or four year sensations, and, listening to this recording, I am not at all sure what all the fuss was about. He does very little with the music except sing it, and the tone isn't all that great either. Peter Glossop is the Don Carlo. While not in the league of the Italians who have recorded this role, he is more than adaquate in it. You will take this recording from your shelf many times because Caballe and Christoff are in it--they make this recording more than worth the little bit of money it costs.
Verdi's Ernani.......2001-02-07
Verdi has given us a virtual songfest!!!This two disc CD has a wonderful ensemble. I really enjoyed hearing Monserat Caballe in this recording. Her lower register or "chest tones" make you really appreciate her great range. It is a good CD to have in your car when you take that long commute.......... it is a real bargain!!!!!
