The familiar "formula" that Monk utilized throughout most of his '60s tenure at Columbia was firmly in place on this, his fourth album for the label. But that recipe--originals sprinkled with covers, played by a quartet of familiar sidemen (veteran tenor sax accomplice Charlie Rouse, newer compatriots Ben Riley on drums, and bassist Larry Gales)--proves deceptively facile on the expanded reissue of this 1965 album. While Gershwin's elegant "Liza" and the standard "April in Paris" are perfect fodder for the pianist's harmonic and rhythmic tweaking, his playful take on the children's song "That Old Man" ably demonstrates how the musician could recast even the most foursquare composition in his own likeness. Even more revealing is Monk's solo exploration of the hoary "I Love You (Sweetheart of My Dreams)," a performance where his left hand seems to mine the stride foundations of his beloved J.P. Johnson, while his right flits restlessly in a different half-century. Rouse takes rewarding turns in the spotlight on "Just You, Just Me" and "Pannonica" (the latter normally a Monk solo excursion), a track that's also featured in a previously unreleased bonus outtake, along with the first take of "April in Paris," cuts that ably attest to Monk's mercurial range within a single session. The bonus, a largely improvised medley of "Just You, Just Me/Liza," also stands as testament to the intuitive bond between Monk and Rouse. --Jerry McCulley

Sadly, Curtains is the final entry in the long and fruitful partnership of lyricist Fred Ebb (who died in September 2004) and composer John Kander. While the show doesn't reach the heights of the team's previous masterpieces, such as Cabaret and Chicago, it's certainly a lot better than, say, their middling 1997 offering Steel Pier. Deliberately old-fashioned (it even features a real overture, something that's fast becoming a rarity), Curtains is a whodunit rolled into a musical--or vice versa. Set in 1959 Boston, it takes place backstage at a singing-and-dancing Western corker titled Robbin Hood. Someone gets killed, and a show tunes-crazy homicide detective (David Hyde Pierce) is called in. The plot is just a pretext for a series of very entertaining, characteristically brass-heavy songs that may not have the bite of old Kander and Ebb but are still very catchy. Above all, Curtains is (both thematically and stylistically) a love letter to old-school showbiz, and it's delivered on a silver platter by a cast of pros that includes the aforementioned Hyde Pierce, Kander and Ebb habituée Karen Ziemba, endearing Jason Danieley and, a notch above the rest, Debra Monk. Unsurprisingly, she chews the scenery and spits it right back in a pair of rowdy numbers: "Show People" and "It's a Business." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

And even if you are not---the music is great!!!!!! This is the final collaboration between John Kander and the late Fred Ebb--plus throw in the efforts of Rupert Holmes (who wrote the underated MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD--and everyone's favorite guilty pleasure 70's tune--THE PINA COLADA SONG). Anyway, I always thought David was robbed of a TONY nod for SPAMALOT--so his win for this was quite overdue!

Every song is a winner---and it is not just because of Pierce--Deborah Monk also has one of the great show stoppers "IT'S A BUSINESS"!

All theatre buff will enjoy--I certainly did!

Nice, witty and pleasant music. Sadly, as the teams last work, it is not on a par with their earlier efforts. I kept expecting the big, gorgeous, soaring ballad of other shows, but it never really comes. I still think Steel Pier is their best work (tho the show didn't work). However when you are the composers of Cabaret, The Happy Time, Woman of the Year, Chicago, The Act and The Rink (among still more), you go down in theater history as one of the great songwriting teams in American theater.

The performers are all first rate, David Hyde Pierce and Debra Monk are hoots. KAren Ziemba, as always, is wonderful. A major disappointment is that Jason Danielly's beautiful tenor voice is not given more to do. Overall, pleasant fun!!

Very entertaining. A fitting finale to the partnership of Kander & Ebb.
The story is immaterial to the music. A strong cast carries off what could be considered a nonsense piece. Plaudits all round to the cast, writers and producers.

David Hyde Pearce is excellent as the detective -- finally breaking away from his Niles Crane persona. He's not a great singer, but he sure can put over his songs. I was particularly impressed with Debra Monk who is delightfully catty and crude and she sings beautifully. The score is not Kander & Ebb's best, but the lyrics are clever and sometimes had be LMAOROTF.

"Curtians" The Broadway Musical was fun and holds up "pretty good but not great" to the Kander and Ebb reputation but fortunately, their music holds up quite well!
The wonderful thing about this CD is, you can get the jist of the entire show and enjoy the CD for itself.

The music is good and the performing cast on the CD are a scream, with Debra Monk delivering the funniest lines. David Hyde Pierce brought home the TONY, and this CD is so good, it gives you a hint why.

Expectations ran high for this 25th anniversary revival of Company. Boyd Gaines's Robert was surrounded by a solid cast, though once again the women particularly shone: on "Barcelona" Jane Krakowski shows why she was a respected Broadway actress way before television discovered her in Ally McBeal, while Veanne Cox navigates the treacherous rapids of "Getting Married Today" with the assurance of a true New Yorker for whom singing fast is routine (does she even breathe?). Debra Monk won't make us forget Elaine Stritch on "The Ladies Who Lunch," but she's more than adequate as she roars down this ultimate showstopper. "Marry Me a Little," not in the 1970 version, is included. Of the three Company recordings that are widely available, this is the only one to include the complete lyrics. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

with the roster of big named broadway talent ,you would think this revival,which is closer to the original than any other production,would make for a good recording. it did not.everyone seems to be not in good form. even the usually amazing la chanze cranks out a lackluster marta.
the orchastrations are nowhere as good as the original.it soft of reminds me of a community theater production of actors trying to play the characters so differently from the originals that they end up underdone. there are very few standouts.....actually only one. jane krakowski, who i believe would have been a better marta.anyways, buy this cd if you are a completist.if you need the song marry me a little buy the putting it together cast recording the voices is better and the arrangement is even better

It took 25 years for a Broadway revival of COMPANY to happen. When it did it was a production by the Roundabout Theatre Company announced for a limited run and though there were rumors the show would transfer to another Broadway theatre, this was not to be. There are changes to the text and orchestration here. The orchestra is reduced to fourteen players, less than half the size of the original. Recording techniques have changed since 1970 and the singers now all use isolation booths. The result on the record is not the sound of all voices blending into an ensemble but of 11 individual voices. This is most apparent in You Could Drive a Person Crazy. Debra Monk sounds too young and lacks world-weary quality needed for Joanne and screams too much in The Ladies Who Lunch, but La Chanze makes a wonderful Marta, belting out Another Hundred People in a style all her own.

Sondheim mad a few lyric changes. "Much the simplest of crimes" becomes "much the cleanest of crimes." And the line "I could understand a person if a person was a fag" was changed to "if he happened to be gay."

Boyd Gaines had been sidelined during the run of the revival with throat problems. He shows no sign of strain in any f his tracks, and this version restored Marry Me a Little for him to sing at the end of Act One. If the others don't quite match the original cast, they at least offer an interesting alternate.

I'd like to get proponents of the three versions of "Company" I'm aware of - the OBC, 1996 London, and this 1996 Broadway Revival Cast - and put them in a room together to "discuss" which one is the best. And better, put a large table in the center of the room, piled high with fruits and doughnuts and the sort, and see how long it takes for the food to start flying.

I actually have all three of those recordings. An ex gave me a cassette of the 1996 Revival Cast, then she bought me the 1996 London cast CD, and after the OBC was remastered on CD, I went and bought that for myself (after we broke up). Each recording has its high points, and in a geeky song-to-song comparison, each recording has songs which are done better than on the other two. But this 1996 Revival Cast has the least. It doesn't help that the actor who plays Bobby is kind of bland, and his "Being Alive" was a disappointment - a song that when I listen through line by line, listening to what it says, usually gets me all verklempt. "Getting Married Today" is the most technically proficient performance of that song, and still amazing at that, but the singer sacrifices the desperation and frantic emotion needed to really deliver that song.

On the plus side, I don't think there should ever be a comparison to Elaine Stritch's "Ladies Who Lunch", I think our panel can agree to put down the tomatoes and kruellers and give that song to the Original Broadway Cast. Given that, the 1996 Revival version is quite well executed and hits all the emotions and nuances required of that most nuanced of songs. This version is the only one that makes me laugh *every* time she hits that last 'I'll drink to that' - you know the one. It's a little over the top, but it's so gold. I liked the version of "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" best on this recording because it has the cleanest execution and the women really hit the Andrews Sisters-esque close harmony, the precision of which makes the song work just a tiny bit better than the other versions. It's a competent recording, and an update on the OBC (there are more parallels between the two Broadway recordings than with the London), and it's obviously a better sound recording.

My favorite of the three? I know I'm gonna get pelted with jelly doughnuts, but I like the London best *throws up arms defensively*. It's the little things in that recording, like the 4 bars of swing, breaking the rhythm in one of the chase sections of "What Would We Do Without You?", that I'm always listening for now, and isn't on either of the Broadway recordings. There are a whole bunch of just little things I listen for that I like when I put on the CD - a syncopation, an inflection, a different bit of orchestration - oh, the orchestration on the Revival cast is excellent, a lot of little subtle additions. Finally, I liked Adrian Lester's Bobby on the London recording the best because he just sounds very natural, whereas the other Bobby's sound more like formal singers. It's the little things.

4 out of 5 stars A True Original After All These Years.......2004-08-02

Nearly 35 years after its original Broadway premiere, Stephen Sondheim's "Company" remains one of the most unique and daring works of musical theatre ever. The true definition of a concept musical, the show enschews a traditional, linear plot in favor of vignettes that offer insight into the lives and psyches of married Manhatannites. The show is centered around Bobby, who is the only one of his friends who isn't married and trying to figure out why.

Of course, such a daring concept wouldn't matter if the show wasn't any good, but Sondheim has written a stellar score for this one. Although it initially isn't as melodic and memorable as some of Sondheim's more famous works ("Sweeney Todd," "Into the Woods"), repeat listenings reveal a depth and subtlety that is unfortunately uncommon in most theatre scores. Unassuming songs like "Sorry-Grateful" and "Someone is Waiting" may not instantly grab the listener, but if you surrender yourself to them you will find deeply moving and insightful songs about love and longing.

That's not the say that the show doesn't have its fair share of showstoppers. The title track grabbed me from the moment to first notes were sung, with its endless rounds and lines of counterpoint proving what a master of songcraft Sondheim truly is. And of course, the show ends with "Being Alive," one of Sondheim's most haunting and beautiful melodies ever.

Endless debate has been waged over the merits of this cast and the original, and the simple answer is that the original cast is slightly better. This is only natural, since Sondheim has been quoted as saying he writes for specific actors and believes that if you truly write a great part for a particular person, then anyone can succeed at it. Which this revival proves in spades, with the entire cast doing an excellent job with the difficult music.

However, for some odd reason all the best songs in this show seem to go to women. Veanne Cox does a fabulous job on "Getting Married Today," with such crisp diction and such a frenzied edge to her voice you have to wonder if she ever breathes. LaChanze belts out "Another Hundred People" with confidence, and Debra Monk expertly handles the showstopping "Ladies Who Lunch." She won't replace Elaine Stritch (no one will), but on her own merits Ms. Monk is more than capable of handling the role.

Sondheim buffs need this CD because it includes "Marry Me a Little," and song added after the show's 1970 New York premiere, as well as the full lyrics. It also sports a crack cast performing one of Sondheim's better scores. Newbees might do better to check out the original cast album first, but this revival is certainly worth a listen.

If you want to see a new side to sondheim then I truly suggest this CD. It is different from his touching and more profound musicals. Bobby is the only person who is single amongst a group of friends, and each of these friends are giving him advice and trying to get him married. The score includes great musical numbers from a variety of well-knowns including Jane Krakowski, Robert Westenberg, and LaChanze. Highlights on this CD as opposed to the one from the 70's version are the addition of Bobby's number Marry Me A Little. Also Getting Married Today is a hilarious number done with in a deadpan style reminiscent of Madeleine Kahn. I promise that you will not be dissappointed. The only thing that could make this CD better would be the presence of Elaine Stritch, just because she is amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Kander and Ebbs' Score Stands Alone.......2007-01-21

The biggest criticism of this Broadway musical was the book. It allegedly meandered, bored the audience and included unfocussed or unnecessary sequences such as the "dream sequence". Well, I never saw the show and can only evaluate this score on its own merits. Based on that alone, it's a complete winner. Memorable songs, great performances, and the score itself tell a clear story that might have been muddled by an overly fussy book (again, that's from heresay...I never saw the show, which flopped in its initial presentation -- unfortunately, because there is much to admire and enjoy in this typically complex Kander and Ebb score).

First of all, top-rate performances abound here. Karen Ziemba makes every one of her songs sail into the stratosphere. She is a true wonder and deserved her Tony nomination against incredible competition (Bebe Neuwirth got it for the much more popular "Chicago", but Ziemba's her equal). Debra Monk once again makes her mark as a Broadway character actress, although her song "Everybody's Girl" is easily the worst song in the show and certainly beneath Kander and Ebbs' standard, but she wins you over with her energetic and well-placed rendition. Daniel MacDonald does a suberb job as the ill-fated hero, exposing innocence and wry commentary in his very presence, but he is equalled by Gregory Harrison's slimy and ultimately ferocious performance as Mick, the emcee.

The score evokes the time (the 1930s) without relying on pastiche to put it over. Of note, Ziemba's intro, "Willing to Ride", the ensemble "Everybody Dance" (which gives Harrison his chance to shine), "Two Little Words" (which provides the auspicious debut of a most impressive Kristen Chenowith and augers the great things yet to come for her), the touching "First you Dream" and, finally, the both ferocious and mournful reprises of the title song display a powerful and underrated score that deserves reevaluation.

If the book got it wrong, the composers and actors got it quite right the first time. This Original Cast Recording will always be proof positive of that undeniable fact. Always "dream".

I think it's one of Kander and Ebbs best, better than Chicago and close to Cabaret. Sadly, the book ruined the show, it bored people. Yet, listening to the ravishing music on the CD, it's hard to realize that it all didn't come together. Maybe someday, someone will revise the book and make it work. Till then, enjoy the CD, it's absolutly gorgeous, had great character numbers, spirited dance numbers and dazzling ballads. The performances are wonderful, with Gregory Harrison (who knew Trapper John could sing?) , Daniel MacDonald and Karen Ziemba shining through on every song. The opening and closing theme is haunting.

I first heard excerpts from this on Accuradio.com, and thought it sounded great. It is. In the Kander and Ebb canon, Steel Pier may not rank with Chicago, but I enjoy listening to it as much as to Cabaret. It's sweeter and less dark than either of those, but set in the same period (1933) and just as evocative of that period.

First, the performances of the leads are excellent. Karen Ziemba is superb. Daniel McDonald has a wonderful light baritone, and who knew Gregory Harrison (Trapper John, M.D.) could sing, let alone sing well. Debra Monk performs an excellent comic turn. Kristen Chenoweth's Broadway debut number was corny as can be, but did show off her talent and range well.

The music is just wonderful. Willing to Ride is a spirited waltz. Everybody Dance is a near-perfect Charleston opener top the dance marathon that forms the backbone of the plot. Power is a Powerful Thing may be a little weak in the lyrics, but its set to a spirited and charming ragtime melody. Dance with Me and The Last Girl are sung in a medley format. This is almost a shame because both numbers are excellent in their own right. In fact, The Last Girl is as gorgeous a ballad as you can find anywhere.

Wet is a tinkling, sparkling number in which Ms. Ziemba charms, and Mr. McDonald has a teriffic counterpoint melody. Ms. Monk has a showstopper in Everybody's Girl and a torchy number with Somebody Older. The Shag is a dance piece that may be the best number of all. It seems to alternate between twenties hot jazz and the swing that was just starting to be heard around then. There's also a great bluesy harmonica specialty number, whose only flaw is that it's too short. All in all, the score is a gem, especially compared to most of what we've heard in the last twenty years or so.

This is one of those recordings that makes you wonder why the show was a flop. I went back and read the reviews. Basically they didn't like the plot and felt the production strained too hard to be likeable, but lacked energy at the same time. The show also suffered from comparison to the stunning revival of Chicago that opened in the same season. The critics even managed to be lukewarm on the score. The show closed shortly after being nominated for eleven Tony's and winning none - that was the year Titanic swept the boards. With all that, I'd still say the score is marvelous when heard on its own merits. And I'd go to see a revival if someone would do it. Buy it. I recommend it without reservation.

The overall plot for Kander & Ebb's 1997 "Steel Pier" is fairly weak, but the score is actually quite good and sung by a terrific cast (Karen Ziemba, Daniel McDonald, Debra Monk, Gregory Harrison, and Kristin Chenowith). Not in the same league as their brilliant "Chicago", "Cabaret" or "Kiss Of The Spider Woman", but a worthy effort with several nice tunes.

Unfortunately, "Steel Pier" was overshadowed by that season's remarkable revival of "Chicago" and dreadful "Titanic". A fine addition, however, to a theatre-lover's collection!

I love this album! I bought it a few weeks ago and from the moment I listened to "Two Little Words" I knew this was going to be one of my favorites! The music absolutely gorgeous! I reccomend it!

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.
