smooth (but not boring).......2005-05-18
I first heard and purchased this album when it was released and since then have gone through several (vinyl) copies, as I have played it numerous times over the years for myself and friends. What a sonic treat to finally have it beautifully remastered on CD.
The harmonic moods of Neil Larsen's organ combined with Buzz Feiten's guitar create a distinct, haunting, yet bright voice. During that period ('77-'81) Producer Tommy LiPuma was in his prime as a conduit for great talent (Brenda Russell, George Benson, Yellowjackets) and was adept at mining each player's unique talents for their better than best performance.
The tunes here are excellent and inventive. There is a reoccurring 'pop hook' focus to most of these compositions which is typical of the catchy riff syndrome of most '70s and '80s jazz albums that were not in the fusion camp, yet somehow this collection trancends that trend's predictability, mainly due to the vibrant group of musicians who's warm and dynamic interplay will inspire repeated listens.
The follow up LP "High Gear" (released the following year) could be described with an almost identical review, so consider them book end releases, and nab both titles
I would also advise burning back up copies since you'll most likely be playing (and sharing) them for a long time to come.
Non-Duplicated Creativity.......2004-07-06
I love the music of Neil Larsen. I first encountered him on Portland OR FM radio in the late 70s, and have never tired of hearing the tunes form ALL his albums. Many have this incredible latin beat to them . . . I can't help but being energized. Jungle Feaver, Smooth Talk, Through Any Window - they all are the best IMO. I would love to see him perform live. I wish he would put out another record.
Just had to tell all about this artist. The best.
Best Contemporary Jazz Album of all Time (10 stars).......2004-02-24
I searched the internet for a long time before I finally found this on C.D. When it came in the mail, I put it on and it sounded amazing. The Analog to Digital transfer was Excellent. Warm and crystal clear just like the album. Neil Larsen is my favorite instrumental writer and this is his best work. Every song is a masterpiece. Most of the songs are played on the Hammond M3 organ and it is so wonderful to here that rare sound. Buzzy Feiten is in top form. Andy Newmark and Willie Weeks play there butts off and Michael Brecker's solo's are some of the best that I've ever heard him do. I had the pleasure of working with Neil on a project once and I was so blown away by his musical gift. I wrote up some basic charts, put them in front of him, pushed the record button and watched and listened as he played through the songs as if he'd been working on them for weeks. Every part was perfect and in it's place. His sensitivity to the music was amazing. I had run out of time when writing the charts and was not able to write out the last song. I apologized to Neil and asked if we could take a break while I wrote out the last song. He asked me for a piece of music notation paper and then asked me to role the tape. In the time that it took for the song to play through one time, He had written a perfect chart for the entire tune. It totally blew me away (I still have that chart somewhere). I so much wish that Neil would put out another recording like this one - Hammond organ, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Sax and his wonderful writing.
buzz please re-acquaint yourself with Neil.......2003-02-15
It's simply the best Jazz fusion ever played. I can't seem to figure out why Buzz has avoided playing with Neil ever since. Perhaps it Buzz's obsession of training guitar tech how to use his tuning "system"....wake up Buzz...it's about the music...call Neil on the phone today and demand to do a project with him and release it on your web site ...so that we can enjoy it...
Jungle Fever - Catch it........2002-09-04
Jungle Fever is an awesome work from Neil. I bought this on vinyl back in my high school days and while at college, went to see Neil perform in Raleigh, NC. while there, I got Neil to autograph the jacket on the vinyl. My storied past aside, it is so refreshing to see this material available on CD. The sound is tight and undoubtedly someof the best jazz fusion you'll ever hear.
There was some other guy at the Neil Laresn show named Jarraeu.
