Dick Hyman's approach to solo piano is both rich in tradition and deeply personal, an odyssey into the wellsprings of American music. Ranging through a repertoire of well-known standards and sometimes obscure delights, Hyman brings a wealth of piano techniques, infectious swing, and a knack for sometimes extravagant variations, including a version of "Just You, Just Me" that ranges from classic stride playing to interpolated soul jazz. Among the little-heard pieces are "Odeon," a 1905 composition by Brazilian Ernesto Nazareth that adds a Latin touch to a ragtime foundation, and James P. Johnson's exuberant "Carolina Shout." Hyman's version of the traditional ballad "Shenandoah" is especially inspired, a lovely rolling improvisation that presses its consonant harmonies toward the resonating world of minimalism. Recorded on a nine-foot Boesendorfer concert grand, this recital is both an audiophile's and piano lover's delight. --Stuart Broomer

There was nothing like the Robeson sound, ever. To describe his deep, rich, perfectly equalized instrument is futile. Go instead to "Balm in Gilead," the opening track, and see if you can listen to the last pianissimo phrase without falling to pieces. Robeson was at his best when the music was slow and the words contained spiritual or social messages. Faster, lighter fare like Kern's "I Still Suits Me" or Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" find the serious-minded singer out of his element, lacking irony and swing. "Old Man River," though, gets a simple, dignified treatment. It's Songs of Free Men, though, that will just keep Robeson's artistry rolling along, especially in Sony's astonishing transfers. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Robeson on wax.......2007-06-19
I found this album in a thrift store last week, for a couple of dollars. It's the original pressing on four 78 RPM records, in a gatefold format. It's in pristine condition. I really bought it for the incredible cover art, although I hope to be able to listen to it in this format at some point.
The voice, the sound quality and the interpretation.......2004-09-24
Put this on your stereo and if it is good enough the depth and richness of Robeson's voice will make your fillings rattle and your chest rumble. The power of his voice is awesome. This CD is superbly recorded with no audible noise at normal listening levels.
A Voice from the 40s, often dated, often moving.......2002-09-01
"Red diaper babies" have greeted this disc with nostalgic joy, and it captures a time and an aesthetic and a political belief with precision. Anyone interested in the emotional life of the pro-Soviet left of the 1940s should buy this disc. It's something like Henry Wallace set to music. There is much more to Robeson than that, however, and Sony has given us Robeson whole: there are songs by American masters of the musical, there are labor songs, religious songs, as well as the kind of faux-folk songs which the butcher supreme Josef Stalin encouraged and which were not taken seriously inside the USSR (except at gunpoint!!) but which were taken up by dupes around the world. This is Robeson at his least savory - willing propagandist for a vile mass murderer. Songs such as "Native Land" (fittingly, Robeson is referring to the Soviet Union) and the Red Army song are the equivalent of the "Horst Wessel Song", anthems of murder, and it is difficult to listen to the worst of them without retching. On the other hand, Robeson's commitment to American folk culture was real. "Balm in Gilead" is deeply beautiful; "John Henry" is heroic; "By an' By" is both resigned yet hopeful. "Joe Hill" captures an era in labor history. Anyone interested in American popular song should hear these. Turning to Broadway, his "Old Man River" is very fine, though Robeson changed the lyrics for political reasons and Leonard Warren has done the song better. I disagree with the editorial reviewer: "I Still Suits Me" is wonderfully playful and shows Robeson using his gorgeously rich voice to tease and poke fun. However, Marc Blitzstein's "Purest Kind of a Guy" is beyond saving - another example of Robeson recording an unworthy song by a political fellow-traveller. Ugh. But for every miss there are two hits. Robeson performs Mendelssohn's Elijah with nobility, and sings his favorite song, "Water Boy", with joyous pride: "There ain't no hammer that's on these mountains that rings like mine, boys, that rings like mine."
No one need have any fears about the mono sound quality. The orchestra in the second half of the program is at times a little dwarfed by Robeson's voice, but it generally sounds clean and colorful, and the great artist's voice rings like no other.
Robeson at his best.......2000-05-12
It's hard to believe that most of these recordings pre-date the advent of magnetic tape: the CD transfer is superlative. The songs and performance are beyond reproach. Notable is the imaginative packaging in miniature 'record album' format, complete with the original cover art, and a replica of the original Columbia record label applied to the CD.
In response to a previous question: Robeson's performance of Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) can be found on the Vanguard LP entitled "Robeson" (VRS-9037).
some of the greatest songs of the last century.......2000-05-05
In the 1940s, before rabid McCarthyism and racism had taken its toll on him, Robeson made these wonderful recordings of spirituals, classics and pop tunes. Accompanied by the solo piano of the incomparable Lawrence Brown, or by an orchestra, the songs ring out with pride, dignity, skill and unmatched integrity. The shameful treatment that Robeson was subject to from American authorities certainly seem grotesquely absurd to a modern listener. The wonderful version of "The House I Live In" included on this cd should forever kill off any suspicion that Robeson did not love his country deeply. This album ought to be heard by millions of people, world wide. Robeson's voice is nothing less than a glorious high point in 20th century music, and it's hard to think of any recording capturing it to greater advantage.

Unique and enjoyable recording.......2006-08-16
This is one of my favorite Rasputina albums. The recording quality is top notch and it's not just the band playing the same songs that you hear on the studio albums. They've got some very amusing exchanges with the crowd and intro to most of the songs.
I cannot stress enough that the live editions of these songs are different than the ones on the studio albums. "Hunter's Kiss" and "If Your Kisses Can't Hold", in my opinion, are much better in the live renditions than the studio versions from other albums.
All in all, I am quite pleased with this purchase as it is a very nice complement to the rest of the Rasputina catalog.
Hey! This has been done before!.......2005-12-31
Rasputina is great and unique; being a cellist myself they really mean a lot to me. I am also a music lover and really like 'gothic' stuff(gothic cello music ~perfect~)... but I have been getting into psychedelic/acid folk rock too...Well what does that have to do with anything? I just listened to 'Blind Man' by Curved Air from their album Air Conditioning and I really thought it was Rasputina! The exact same vocal style, strings, and very similar melodies! I can't believe this was done 35 years ago! ... Rasputina kinda had problems in their career trying to find a place to 'fit in' and decided to go with the gothy thing touring with Marilyn Manson. Now their fans are also listening to music like Marilyn Manson, Switchblade Symphony and other Cleopatra Records stuff(based on Amazon.com similar searches)...It just makes me wonder if they toured under a more relevant folk-rock outfit(maybe with Coldplay or Lucinda Williams instead of Manson) would they still have fans that listen to gothic music? Heck No! Would they be more popular? Yes!...So back to what I was gonna say. If you find that Rasputina's music really stands out and you want something more similar in sound do a search for acid/psychedelic folk rock bands of the 60's 70's...stuff like Comus and Curved Air. Similarities will blow you away.
Worst live album I've ever heard.......2005-11-16
Sorry I don't mean to belittle their work but it really is the worst live album by a band I have ever heard.
I love Rasputina!!!!.......2005-10-20
Love the remakes of Barracuda and Been a Long Time. No one believes me when I say that it is a Cello instead of guitars.
Love Wicked Dickie and When I was a Young Girl as well. Buy it. This CD is better, in my opion, than the studio CD's.
An old man who had a cow...........2005-10-18
I love this CD, plain and simple. I had only ever heard a few songs off of 'Thanks for the Ether' and was impressed but not immensely. With this CD, I am impressed...immensely.
First off, it sounds better than any live CD I have ever heard. I usually avoid live recordings like the plague but this one brings me new hope for live stuff.
Second, and most importantly, the music is inspired and practically brilliant (Not Hyperbole). Every song stands on its own and is shockingly eclectic in its own right. From their "Cow Punk" to their "Classical" to songs like "The Mayor" (which is gorgeous, for lack of better word).
If you have heard any of Rasputina's music and even kinda liked it I recommend this CD. If you listen to it and don't find yourself singing "Wicked Dickie" throughout the day, I will give you a nice shiney quarter.

Remarkable........2002-02-01
A great example of Luciano's control over his art. Tranquil, beautiful and wonderful. "Donlente immagine di Fille mia" is worth the price of the cd itself. Pavarotti at his best!
Although a few signs of wear, a very good buy. Get it!!.......2001-09-16
Luciano Pavarotti sings his occassional program of arias and songs. His singing is very good. He is 65 and - despite his hair dye - he looks it. So his days as a performer are clearly numbered now.
However the title is very misleading. It is not a live recital; it's MANY live recitals, as this album is a collection of about four or five different recitals. The voice is recorded very close to the speakers, as if he were trying to cover the movement from one place to another. it also is obvious that Leone Magiera (the acompanist) plays four or five different pianos, none of them really the highest quality.
Overall, a wonderful gift for a Pavarotti nut (if you can get through the piano playing). Go ahead and buy it now. You will make Amazon smile and - trust me - you will be smiling to. Is there no better recomandation then this?
The Golden Years Of Pavarotti.......2001-03-29
First I would like to say that I am very happy to see a solo release of NEW recordings from the great Pavarotti. I liked the program very much and I was glad to see him include songs that he had not previously commercially recorded. What gets me is that this Live Recital is not just one recital he recorded. This is a compilation of recorded songs and arias from four different recitals in four different years and four different opera houses ranging from 1997 to 2000. To me a true recital recording is one performance and speaks volumes on how an artist connects with his/her audience. But on the other hand the singing here is fantastic and those who want more new projects of Pavarotti (including me)won't be disappointed. This is a must for Pavarotti fans and tenor fans alike and please Maestroo Pavarotti, more new projects!!

OUT OF STEP.......2005-01-17
Two things I particularly like about Cherkassky. One is his very attractive touch, the other is that he does his own thing in terms of what he chooses to play, whatever the trends in critical fashion. This disc preserves for us the little man's 80th birthday recital at the Carnegie Hall in 1991, and is now available as one of Decca's Gramophone Awards Collection, having won the instrumental award in 1993.
With the passing of Horowitz and Cziffra a particular kind of virtuoso tradition had almost died out. Cherkassky represented an even older element in that tradition than Horowitz did. He was a pupil of Josef Hofmann and his playing recalls Hofmann's in some ways, although he has no lack of individuality of his own. The first piece in this recital that brings out his virtuosity to the full is actually by Hofmann, and being unaware of anything else of Hofmann's creative work I can't be sure how to understand its title `Kaleidoscope' nor how to place it in any kind of context. Cherkassky treats us to some delightful scintillating fingerwork in it, showing the characteristic cool clarity of touch that is his special hallmark. In fact that is apparent in every single work on this long programme, from which a few pieces have had to be dropped as exceeding the disc-capacity, although they are to be issued on a separate record. There is a certain amount of standard fare here - a nocturne by Chopin and his tarantella, Schumann's etudes symphoniques, and I suppose we can include the Bach/Busoni chaconne under the `standard' heading. I have that in another performance by Michelangeli, not widely known for outlandish choices in his recitals, and the contrast is delightful. There is a devil-may-care bit about Cherkassky, and it is pleasant to find it surviving through the new era of perfectionist super-virtuosi that Michelangeli, Lipatti and (on some days) Richter represented. There is also a short sonata by Ives, and in a more populist vein there is a paraphrase by Paul Pabst of themes from Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin. Just in case anyone was finding the programme too uniform in style, Cherkassky ends with a boogie-woogie etude by Morton Gould.
There is a great sense of enjoyment about it all, although a fifth star in the rating would have needed a bit more evenness in the playing generally from my point of view. By that I don't mean more accuracy - wrong notes are very rare indeed, and I understand from the liner note that the allocation of time for retakes was not used and the recital as we have it here is exactly as Cherkassky gave it. The liner note itself is talkative and charming, and the recorded quality is perfectly good without being outstanding. There was room for a player like this in a generation that had decided to take a different direction.

Product Description
My first flute teacher, Robert di Domenica introduced the Bach Partita to me when I was fourteen years old. I studied it with William Kincaid and Samual Baron. Each had different ideas about it - all correct! proving a masterpiece can withstand varying interpretations. It's a piece with unlimited possibilities. For many years I was a member of Speculum Musicae, a contemporary music group. Some concerts would open with the Debussy Cello Sonata brilliantly performed by Fred Sherry. Not that the solo flute repertoire is lacking, but I was so envious. It took me 30 years to finally transcribe the sonata for the flute. I think "Syrinx" would fit the cello nicely. Robert di Domencia is also a fine composer. His flute sonata (dedicated to Harold Bennett, his flute teacher) was one of the first contemporary pieces I learned. It is composed in rigorous twelve-tone technique yet is lyrical and romantic, like the music of the second Viennese school that influenced the composer. I came across Matthew van Brink when I judged a competition of young composers. He sent me Dal Dosai which I believe is one of the best sonatas written for flute and piano in recent years. Matt has been influenced by many types of music, and his eclectic taste is evident in this vibrant and challenging opus. Flutists know Briccialdi for his prodigious etudes and virtuoso showpieces. Ballabile (originally with orchestral accompaniment) is another in that tradition. Peter Basquin and I played this at the Newport Music Festival in 1969. The flute part hasn't gotten any easier. PAUL LUSTIG DUNKEL is currently the music director of the Westchester Philharmonic and Principal Flutist of the New York City Ballet Orchestra. He demonstrated his musical abilities at the age of eight soon after his mother dragged him kicking and screaming to his first piano lesson. Two years later, at the encouragement of his piano teacher, he took up the flute under the tutelage of Robert di Domencia. While at Queens College (CUNY) he continued his flute studies with William Kincaid and Samuel Baron and piano with Anka Bernstein Landau. Following graduation Mr. Dunkel was active in New York City's freelance world while pursuing an advanced degree at Columbia University. He was principal flute of the American Symphony Orchestra, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, the American Composers Orchestra and Musica Aeterna as well as a member of Speculum Musicae and the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble. He also participated in the Marlboro, Spoleto, Aspen and Stratford music festivals. Mr. Dunkel turned his attention to the podium in the 1980's and has since conducted the American Composers Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Lukes, the Brooklyn Philharmonic and the Denver Chamber Orchestra. He has been the Music Director of the Westchester Philharmonic since 1983 and commissioned Melinda Wagner's Flute Concerto (winner of the Pulitzer Prize) for the orchestra's 50th anniversary in 1998. PETER BASQUIN won the Montreal International Piano Competition and has made regular appearances at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. His principal teachers were William Nelson (Carleton College) and Dora Zaslavsky (Manhattan School of Music). He has been a soloist with the Boston Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra and the Montreal, Quebec and American Symphony Orchestras. He has performed under Michael Tilson Thomas, Gunther Schuller, Dennis Russell Davies and Paul Dunkel. His performances can be heard on the Argo, CRI, Peters International, Grenadilla and New World labels. Mr. Basquin tours with the Aeolian Chamber Players, and has been a professor of music at Hunter College (CUNY). He is a faculty/artist member of the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival and the pianist of the American Composers Orchestra.
