Product Description
With this latest release by Jack Sheldon, the title "California Cool" immediately sets up certain expectations. West Coast lion, Jack Sheldon, cleanly lays out every one of them.
This well-constructed CD has a solid foundation of well-chosen jazz vocal standards including "Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "How High The Moon" and "I'll Remember April". Each displays Sheldon's solid vocal and trumpet chops.
Behind each tune Sheldon supplies well-placed backup chords on keyboard adding a luscious fullness to each selection.
Two instrumentals are included; first, "On Green Dolphin Street" where he lands a solid blow with a formidable eight-bar rubato instrumental opening, without the rhythm section, naked and beautiful. He closes it the same way, holding the final resonate note a full 16 seconds without wavering. Next, "Sarah", deliciously hip and seductive...a classic example of West Coast Cool.
This CD moves unpredictably from mainstream/bop to extremely fresh and Sheldonesque originals like the beautiful "Wait and See" a sexy ballad where Sheldon's vocals are as intensely lusty as his horn is passionate. Next, he paints a portrait of a town in Northern California, "Bodega Bay" where Sheldon displays bold and agile flourishes. He goes on to surprise you with "Spinner", a playful and swinging tribute to shapely women. Then, "49 Women" a spirited and slightly irreverent blues where Sheldon blows without restraint. The title track, "California Cool", is a sleek tribute to Sheldon's beloved home state where he follows through with a powerful selection of exciting ideas and fiery trumpet technique.
The quartet includes Milcho Leviev, Bruce Lett and Nick Martinis, a solid group who listen well and respond to each of Sheldon's grooves.
Throughout this CD, Jack Sheldon's speed, agility and imagination flourish. Jack Sheldon is at the top of his game and very cool...California Cool.

Attention Must Be Paid........2007-06-03
I second the previous reviewers' sentiments. If Jack Sheldon's not a national treasure, he certainly is as good a trumpet player as any over the course of sixty years. Listen to the timeless music of the Curtis Counce recordings from the late 1950s, then try to tell me that the challenger to Miles Davis was Chet Baker rather than Jack. Even then, he had as identifiable, highly personal, inimitable a voice as any musician. Even on large-orchestra studio sessions, all it takes is a single note, and you know it's Jack--intimate, controlled and precise, logical and flowing yet full of whimsy and surprises.
To some extent it's hard to believe that his relative obscurity was entirely due to location or the color of his skin or his less-than-Elvis (or Chet) good looks. Jack never looked quite as "serious" about his art as the others and was never the best caretaker of his own career. To him, a gig was a gig, and he probably always loved life (and other things) as much as the music. But if he wasn't as serious about himself as other, more publicized names, he had to be serious about his trumpet playing, regardless of how humble he sounded when he talked about it. Like Diz, he's always been a "player" in the best sense of the word. And this is a game you don't get good at unless you take it very, very seriously. In fact, maybe Jack has been taking the trumpet a bit too seriously--
His feeling that for some reason he needed to "rebuild" his sound, thereby putting himself in peril of sounding like everybody else, is at once laudable and troubling. With that vibrant, glowing tone and that airy cushion of sound that once distinguished players like Art Farmer and Kenny Dorham, Sheldon should be the teacher, not the other way around. In any case, it would be great to hear him in a quintet featuring another bonafide "star" (definitely too late for Golson, but Moody and Rollins can still deliver, and perhaps Ira Sullivan too--or go with a young tiger who knows the post-bop mainstream and can swing straightahead--someone like Eric Alexander, or Chris Potter (who was Red Rodney's frontline protegé before getting all wrapped up in postmodern eclecticism and "beyond" sounds).
Jack at the Very Top of His Game..........2007-03-13
...And Sheldon's game is big league all the way. Frankly, Jack Sheldon is the most under-appreciated great Jazz artist of our time. He is most known for his work on Merv' show, or School House Rock, which is kind of like remembering Jean Shepherd just for "A Christmas Story" and ignoring his singular work of genuis in radio. Jack Sheldon is a true triple threat--he's funnier than most comics, has a more distinctive and authentic voice than most singers, and is without question one of the all time great trumpet players. The Jazz snobs, especially the east coast crowd, have written Jack off as Chet Baker-lite, or worse. Give "Listen Up" a listen and then we'll talk. At 75, Sheldon's tone, imagination, and purity of sound are possibly better than ever. This is Jack's first instrumental album in decades, and while I adore his voice (just ask Tierney Sutton) and consider him one of the great comic minds (He's just naturaly funny even when he's not being filthy), Jack's soul pours out of his horn. There are a lot of great trumpet players who can swing, bop and blast, but there are very, very few who can move you with a ballad the way Sheldon can. He turns that cold hunk of metal into a wounded or happy heart, no mean feat at any age.
Listen to "Listen Up", and then hop a plane and fly to Los Angeles and see Jack play live, because that's as good as it gets. He is a national treasure, Listen Up un-buries him.
J.S. just gets better and better.......2007-03-04
Thank goodness for virtual record stores like Amazon. I'm so sick and tired of walking into CD shops that carry jazz, only to find rows and rows of Chet Baker and Miles Davis, but nothing - or next to nothing - on Jack Sheldon. Give me a break! Jack Sheldon is immediately identifiable from his first three or four notes on any given take. His sound is every bit as individual and characteristic as that of Chet, Miles, or Diz' even. This is a travesty, folks. Early in his career, Jack was overshadowed by the supposedly more sexy Chet Baker - the Chris Botti of his day. Yet, early Sheldon performances with The Curtis Counce Group; The Marty Paich Dek-Tette; Art Pepper, and the one disc that he made with Herbie Mann (with Mann playing an excellent bass clarinet exclusively), all show that he could easily hold his own against the highly tauted Baker. Granted, Chet Baker had a far more marketable singing voice. Anyway, after becoming an established "west coast" jazz musician - as opposed to Baker's fully international career - Jack Sheldon spent several decades playing in the house band on the Merv Griffin Show; often times playing the role of Merv's comic sidekick. Naturally, this lead many folks to conclude that he was no longer a serious jazzer. Well, I have news for those particular people: you couldn't possibly have been more wrong.
Sheldon's jazz chops never went away. And while his singing voice has deteriorated to some degree (he's 75!), his trumpet playing has simply gotten better and better. Today, at age 75, Jack Sheldon continues to study trumpet with Uan Rasey. Never heard of Uan Rasey? Well trust me, you've heard him play! Mr. Rasey played top trumpet on a great number of big Hollywood movies - his most famous and recognizable solos being in the Jack Nicholson/Faye Dunaway blockbuster that has spurred the entire neo-noir craze, "Chinatown". Remember him now? If you buy Jack Sheldon's latest CD, "Listen Up", you'll hear that Jack now plays with a similar sounding, broad and confident tone in his middle and upper registers as that of Uan Rasey's. Yet, the trademark gentle, "foo-foo" style and tone to his low register is perfectly intact. In short, Jack's dynamic range and range of color has increased significantly. All of this wouldn't matter if it weren't also for the fact that he's a hell of an improviser - more like a composer on the spot than yet another trumpeter with a bag full of fast scales and screeching high notes. There's nothing generic about J.S.'s playing what-so-ever. I like to think of him as the Bill Evans of the trumpet. He's makes me think of the many excellent tenor sax players who didn't try to change the course of jazz history - people like Dexter Gordon, Teddy Edwards, and Benny Golson (who really should team up with J.S., before it's too late) - just to name a few. Need I heap on more platitudes?
"Listen Up" is excellent in every conceivable way, including the solid and imaginitive contributions from his California Cool Quartet. In fact, it's so good that you won't miss Jack's singing and/or off-color jokes (which I like); or regret the absence of a good reed man. It also has great sound. "Listen Up" is one man's statement that's also just fun, musical, and enjoyable to listen to. Imagine that!

Although California jazz is often considered synonymous with the "cool" sounds of musicians like Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan, the West Coast milieu was actually as diverse as the East Coast jazz scene. This impressive four-disc collection chronologically documents the progression and development of the many genres existing within the context of California jazz. While cerebral players like Dave Brubeck, Jimmy Guiffre, and Art Pepper are featured here, this anthology also includes works by more passionate figures, including Charles Mingus and Dexter Gordon. Highlighting cuts by visitors like Miles Davis alongside performances of local heroes like Shelly Manne and Howard Rumsey, this compilation is as enjoyable as it is instructive. From cool to swing to bop to bossa nova and beyond, California had it all. --Mitch Myers

A Great Jazz Collection-- Even If You're Just A Casual Fan!.......2004-12-20
This 4 CD, 62 song set is a must have for jazz fans! What a great range of artists!
It covers the California Jazz Scene on the Contemporary Records label from 1950-1964.
Some of the most influential artists of all time recorded for Contemporary Records during these years, and this box set is truly awesome!
A 70 page booklet comes with the set with all kinds of great essays and trivia about the California Jazz Scene in the 50's and 60's, as well as complete track-by-track info. about every song.
Hey, if you're just a casual jazz fan and don't know that much about this music, this is a great primer for you!
GET THIS BOX SET!
Some of the best of the best in the music.......2000-04-29
Don't be put off by the title AN ANTHOLOGY OF CALIFORNIA JAZZ which may conjure up some bland, ice-cream type, hair bleached, shallow feel-good music. This boxed set has excerpts from some of the very best jazz of the fifties, period, and includes work by Mr Miles Davis, Mr Sonny Rollins, Mr Ornette Coleman,Mr Clifford Brown, Mr Ben Webster and Mr Art Tatum. It includes, for me, some of my all time favourite tracks from some all time favourite albums including: BERNIE'S TUNE and MY FUNNY VALENTINE by the ORIGINAL Mulligan Quartet;ETUDE DE CONCERT by Shelley Manne and his Men; DAAHOUD by the Clifford Brown Ensemble; BLUE SANDS by the Chico Hamilton Quintet which has one of Mr Jim Hall's greatest solos ; KATANGA by Curtis Amy Sextet featuring the work of underrated unknown trumpet player Mr Dupree Bolton; YOU'D BE SO NICE TO COME HOME TO by the Art Pepper Quartet featuring the rhythm section of Mr Miles Davis; THE FOX by the Harold Land Quintet again featuring Mr Dupree Bolton on trumpet;and finally, 2 DEGREES EAST, 3 DEGREES WEST which is a truly beautiful track from a great album by Mr John Lewis called GRAND ENCOUNTERS (Bill Perkins, John Lewis, Jim Hall, Percy Heath, Chico Hamilton). Because there is so much good music on this anthology, it's best to take it a little at a time so rich are its benefits. Once you put on Track One of CD one and hear the palpable excitement of Mr Wardell Gray and Mr Dexter Gordon live, there may, however, be no turning back! GO FOR IT! One of my best buys of 1999.
Fantastic!.......1999-07-29
This is a fantastic set. When can we expect another collection
A little taste of the era.......1999-07-08
This collection along with the enclosed notes will help any jazz listener, new or old, to savor a little taste of the era. It may also whet your appetite, as it did mine, for more music from some of the featured artists.
Great sampling of the greatest groups of COOL Jazz.......1999-02-06
Getz, Mulligan, John Lewis, Eric Dolphy, Woody Hermans Herd, Chet Baker (at his best), Cal Tjader - The truly greats of the era play some of the best tunes, like Bernies Tune, and My Funny Valentine, and others of the West Coast phenom! I truly enjoyed the mix and the variety of this monumental package. I consider it a milestone in what may become a revival of really cool sound. Thanks.

For completists only.......2006-04-15
This is Max Roach and Clifford Brown at their debut in California in April 1954 with Teddy Edwards on tenor sax, Carl Perkins at the piano, and George Bledsoe at the bass. That's interesting for those who are fond of this quintet. The other set shows the group four months later with THE quintet (Harold Land on tenor sax, George Morrow on bass and Richie Powell at the drums). Talented Jordi Pujol seems to be keen on finding new stuff from radio broadcasting, but though the sound is excellent and the work on cover design is of neat quality (photographs are superb - that makes Fresh Sound one of the most interesting labels - ), the fact that the radio broadcaster intervenes between the cuts, well, it makes this record compulsory, only for completists. Anyway, there is a cut which is tremendous. This is "I get a kick out of you". Clifford Brown is at full strength, blowing all he's got. We really had a marvellous group here. 26 months later, Clifford and Richie Powell had a car accident. They both died. For those who are interested in live performances, please listen to their concert at The Sweet Basil in 1956 (Emarcy)...

This album is the SHIZZNITS.......2006-01-01
This is by far one of the best albums baby beesh has made.My personal fave is "Woy oy" his beats are the best and his lyrics are tight all his raps match. i know hes not known for beeing with Dope House Records and raping with spm, rasheed, low g,juan gotti, angela perez, happy P, and all those other bad a$$ rappers, but he should be and he should of stayed with Dope house Records. AND NO SPM IS NOT DEAD. THAT WAS A PUBLICITY STUNT!!! FREAKIN DUMB A$$ PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY "RIP SPM" WHEN HE REALLY IS NOT DEAD!!!just had to point that out
Remember where you came from..........2004-01-11
All I have to say to young Beesh is: Remember where u came from, homez... Don't be the next Master P. Keep that bay luv and bay flavor, and REP YO CITY!!!!!!!!! Northpole V-town 3C's DOWN!!!!!
It is his best so far........2003-10-12
Beesh/ Bash has put out three albums so far and personally I think this is his best one so far. Savage Dreams being his first is good, on Tha Smokin Nephew he softens up a lil bit too much, making On Tha Cool his best, combining his r&b flow and incorporating it to his music. Great lirycist, excellent production, no more needed to say.
Not that good like savage dreams.......2003-02-13
If you love baby beeshs first album you will be a lil disappointed of that one. It's much slower than savage dreams but still tight. The Intro is my favourite song because it`s too cold for this world!
Tight.......2002-06-23
I think this album is hella tight beby beesh has graduated to a new level in his rap game. His songs have a southern stlye to them now hooking up with dopehouse records out of houston texas.I think he could of used a lil more bay area style.cruizin and partying "vallejo"?. but beesh has his own style that cannot be duplicated, with this album he raps more about lounging, relationships with breezys and ohh yeah smoking weed. The whole ablum i rated at 5 stars because of songs like ..yesterday,in motion, early in the morning....keep it on the cool....
