One of the classic--and bestselling--gospel recordings, this live release from 1962 has all the trademarks of the contemporary gospel sound (which the Reverend James Cleveland almost single-handedly forged in the 1950s as composer and arranger for the vibrant Caravans). Very progressive music for the time, the sound is big, the arrangements bluesy, and Cleveland's powerful vocals alternate between rough-hewn and soaringly handsome. The live recording captures many of the shouts and cries of a superenthusiastic church audience. The backing choir is energized and booming, the funky organ just makes you want to jump up out of your chair, and Cleveland's preaching is simple, smart, and to the point. The only drawback is the crudeness of the recording, but surely the low fidelity is overcome by the performance's sheer power. I cannot praise this recording highly enough - "Peace Be Still" is the epitome of high-octane black gospel. Cleveland's vocals raise the roof, and the Angelic Choir provides the perfect counter-punch, complemented by bluesy keyboards and swinging percussion (the drums on "I Will Wear a Crown" have an almost surf-rock feel). And the rousing doxology and amens ("Praise God") provide the perfect conclusion. If you are a fan of gospel, you must have this record! If you are interested in gospel, this is the place to start.

Unfortunately, Rev. Cleveland never equalled this masterpiece. If anyone knows of any albums that sound like "Peace Be Still," I would love to hear about them.

    I am purchasing this 2 volume set for my best friend, Anna. As a little girl in Fairburn, Georgia, Anna grew up on WAOK's daily lunchtime playing of Rev. Nicks' rendition of "Amazing Grace." It was not until a few days ago that she realized that on a recent trip to Detroit, she had been in the home of my adopted family, including big brother, Charles Nicks, who could "make an organ talk."

    As their adopted baby, I grew up in Detroit spending a great portion of my childhood in the Nicks' home. Not only did we dine on "good food for the soul", we dined on good "musical" food for the soul! His wonderful mom, Mother Aliece Nicks, was Charles' first music teacher. Charles spent many a day at the piano and organ in my grandparents home, and oh, if those walls could talk and sing, what a magnificent story they could tell of the sounds of praise that will never again be duplicated until we all meet at Jesus' feet. My, my, my...

    Even if you don't like Gospel music, trust me when I say, if you do not buy these CD's by the late Rev. Charles H. Nicks, Jr., you will have cheated yourself out of one of the most moving experiences on earth. By way of memory, think about how everytime you heard the voice of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., you stopped right in your tracks from doing whatever you were doing and listened?

    All of the soloists and musicians of the world could all sing and play simultaneously, but when the maestro, Charles Nicks, climbed aboard his organ seat, crying babies, whining puppies, and feuding relatives, all ceased their clamor and noise, stood silently transfixed, and listened to what heaven itself must sound like!

    We know of gospel singers that can sing such as, Mahalia Jackson, and Shun Pace Rhodes. We know of gospel pianists that can play such as James Cleveland and Donald Vails, but there is not another gospel organist like the late Rev. Charles Nicks Jr. From his first album, 'A Night In Concert" to his last recording "Hold Back The Night" no other preacher, teacher, singer, writer and organ player like Rev. Charles Nicks Jr. music still is inspiring to listen to today. I highly recommend any lp, cassette, and cd that this late composer produce. Yours truly.

    There is nothing better than traditional gospel,and The Rev. Charles Nicks Jr. and the St. James Missionary Baptist Church Adult Choir of Detroit,Michigan are the epitome of traditional gospel at it's best with just a tinge of pentecostalism in it. A lifelong baptist myself,i grew up on this kind of gospel and can feel the power & conviction in these songs. I reccomend this album and unforgettable years vol 2 or any other Rev. Charles Nicks album or the St. james Adult Choir album 'I Trust In God'. I guarantee you won't be let down by the GREATEST ORGANIST IN THE WORLD AND HIS CHOIR.

    This is a CD by my Grandfather. This year I released my first solo CD. Bill McGee This One's 4U. I'm named after my grandfather, my given name is William Ford McGee, he was Ford Washington McGee. How can I say anything other than I'm so proud to be the grandson of a Gospel Music Pioneer. Hopefully, some of his God given talent has been handed down to me spiritually and genetically. God Bless You All. By the way it's ironic that my grandfather had several well known trumpet players on a several of his recordings..

      I have heard lot's of Gospel but this is by far the best. Each song is better than the Last. But "Come to Jesus" is my favorite.

          5 out of 5 stars More rip-roaring, buck-wild sermons!.......2004-08-21

          All you corn-licker drinkers, fornicators, slick-fingered gamblers, mother heart breakers and midnight ramblers-look out! Reverend James M. Gates with his old-style, buck-wild, rip-roaring, take no prisoners, backwoods country preaching is gonna reserve you a seat on the hell bound express!

          The Rev. is in rare form as he waxes some of his wildest and most comical (to most modern ears) sermons. Most of this stuff is fall-down-on the floor funny, but there's a lot of earnestness here too. "Death is On Your Track" and "Flood in Alabama" are really moving meditations on the power of divine providence. "Straining at a Gnat and Ganwing at a Camel" is mighty strong stuff for 1929. He addresses "You Negro Haters" who "hate to eat with the Negro but don't him him fixing your food" and who "sleeps with Negroes!" Considering that he recorded this in Atlanta during the days of massive lynching in Georgia, this is gutsy indeed!

          "Dead Cat on the Line" (which Rev. C.L. Franklin has cited as inspiring him to preach as a child) is fascinating, as he talks about "Illegal" (i.e., "illegitimate") children. When a sister in the congregation says "I think I know who the father of my last two children is," I defy anyone not to roll over in hysterics!

          This, the 1927-28 collection, and the compilation "Are You Bound for Heaven or Hell" will provide lots of wild laughter and some things to actually meditate about. Never a dull moment! When it came to recorded preachers, Rev. James M. Gates was the uncrowned king! Whoa-hoo-woah!

          5 out of 5 stars There's A Dead Cat On The Line!.......2001-11-21

          I found out about Rev. Gates because Steve Cushing would typically play one of Gates' sermons during his radio program's "gospel set." Gates was the most popular producer of the "singing and sermon" records issued during the 20's. Gates tended more towards the sermon side and they are quite bizarre to the contemporary ear to say the least! The most interesting tracks are the one I mentioned in the title of the review and "No Room in the Jailhouse." I would recommend starting with this disc first and working your way backwards through the series as there are a lot of reissues of the same sermons in his earlier releases. Gates' style is also fully developed on the later discs. You mother heart breakers! You midnight ramblers!
