Mark Whitfield is a throwback. In an era when most jazz guitarists favor a brash, metallic tone, Whitfield is the soul of mellowness. Playing a hollow-body Gibson, the 26-year-old gets a soothing, almost acoustic tone from his electric instrument. His new album, "True Blue," is devoted to "a true mix of jazz and blues," as the liner notes put it, but even in the earthy genre of the blues, Whitfield sounds tastefully laid-back.
Joining Whitfield on his first recording for Verve are three members of the Branford Marsalis Quartet (and the Tonight Show Band)--pianist Kenny Kirkland, drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts and saxophonist Marsalis--as well as bassist Rodney Whitaker and trumpeter Nicholas Payton. In terms of technique, Whitfield has no problem holding his own in this company, for his timing is impeccable and his solos are inventive and well shaped. In terms of projecting his own personality, however, this self-effacing bandleader is all too easily overshadowed by his guests.
For example, on "Immanuel the Redeemer," one of three Whitfield compositions inspired by his religious beliefs, Whitfield's opening solo is skillful but it has none of the swagger and passion of the Marsalis and Kirkland solos which follow. Randy Weston's "Berkshire Blues" is a very romantic approach to the blues, but Whitfield's dazzling 16th-note runs have none of the sensuality of Kirkland's piano solo nor even the dramatic tension of Watts's drum fills. The seven Whitfield originals are supplemented by blues written by John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Charlie Parker. --Geoffrey Himes

Amazon.com essential recording
A quintessential '80s pop artifact, Madonna's third album was a huge musical leap forward and ranks with Like a Prayer and Ray of Light in the top echelon of her works. Only the title track (a bit too obviously a '60s girl-group homage) and the fine-but-nothing-special "Jimmy Jimmy" slightly lower the quality bar. Most of the songs share a jittery dance-pop sound, edgy, distracted, and nerve-jangling but simultaneously invigorating and exhilarating and almost dangerously giddy--a perfect soundtrack for the mid-'80s. Highlights include the hedonist's credo of "Where's the Party," the subtle and pretty Latin pastiche "La Isla Bonita," and, towering above all, three stunning mega-hits. "Papa Don't Preach," with its gorgeous pseudo-classical strings intro, is a sumptuous airwaves banquet, as Madonna wrestles with the have-the-baby-or-give-it-up dilemma (abortion's not in the picture) in newly gritty tones. "Open Your Heart"'s marriage of jitter-pop and wistful melody underscores the singer's yearning but forceful stance ("You better open your heart to me, buster"). And "Live to Tell" is a riveting ballad, lushly melodic yet spare and haunting--a place, as the song says, where beauty lives. --Ken Barnes
Customer Reviews:
The New True Blue.......2007-06-04
True Blue is the album that changed my life forever. It made me the person I am today and released all my sexual doubts. Madonna taught me how to 'Express Myself' even before 'Like a Prayer'. For those that remember, MTV and Madonna had a 'Make my Video' contest. For 24 hours, MTV played homemade True Blue videos continuously. My video played at 11:48PM EST. I was the one dancing in the bathroom wearing my mother's underwear. Ever since then I have made a video for each and every Madonna song. My dream is to be one of her backup dancers.
True Blue is such an awesome album. After listening to Papa don't Preach on the radio I loved it, but I was hooked after seeing the video and watching her bounce and jiggle in her black outfit.
Open your Heart is the theme song of my life. I only wish I had someone to sing it to. I practice by singing it to my cats, so one day I will be ready to find my True Blue love.
Live to Tell is the most magical and beautiful song of Madonna's career. The mystery and wonder of this song makes me realize that I have a purpose in life and it is to worship Madonna. I have never met her, but I bought some of her skin off eBay. I bought it from someone who took it out of Madonna's slipper. Live to Tell makes me cry.
'White Heat' and 'Where's The Party' are great songs too. They are really fun to drive to when I deliver pizza. No matter how busy I am at work, I can always look forward to listening to Queen Madonna as I deliver piping hot goodness.
La Isla Bonita is Madonna's opinion on politics. After listening to this and watching her play the Don't cry for me Argentina lady, I dedicated my life to sending money to South America. But now Madonna is interested in Africa, so I send my money to Africa. I send it under Madonna's name. I do this for the goddess Madonna. One day she will reward me in Madonna heaven.
Last but not least, I changed my first and middle name to Jimmy. This is out of respect for the 'Jimmy Jimmy' song on this album that I love so much. I can only hope one day Madonna will know of my true love for her.
When I listen to this album I like to sit on my bed and cuddle with my oversized purple pillows. Sometimes I cry, and sometimes I go through my high school yearbook, but most of the time I just sing to my cats. This album gives me hope. It is the only reason why I live.
Genuine Portrayal of Multidimensional Madonna, Full of Positive Energy.......2007-05-30
After having ruled the chart with preceding Like A Virgin, Madonna seemingly tries to reflect and express herself genuinely in her third album True Blue. Working with her old friend (Stephen Bray) and an unknown producer (Patrick Leonard), the sound production, prevalent light funk in the 80s, is ordinary but straightforward and intimate. Broadened song themes include an uplifting message to a woman on the edge ("Papa Don't Preach"), a love-and-peace anthem ("Love Makes the World Go Round"), nostalgia for a memorable foreign place ("La Isla Bonita"), and many love songs from assertive "Open Your Heart" and "White Heat" to introspective "Live To Tell" to happy "True Blue" to silly "Jimmy Jimmy." Combined together, they all serve portraying multidimensional Madonna. The album is full of positive energy, most likely thanks to her own true love to "the coolest guy in the universe" back in the time.
True Blue..........2007-02-03
Remastered, it sounds even better. La Isla Bonita is my favorite song. Five stars for Ms. Madonna...

Madonna - More then Just Dance-Pop.......2007-01-23
"True Blue" from 1986 is Madonna at her absolute Top. This was her third album and it proved that she was defenitely here to stay, Not only had she changed her look but also found a great producer in Patrick Leonard and with this album she slowly transformed into the superstar she is today. Apart from the previous two albums she both co-wrote all the songs (With Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray) and produced the album. Out of the 5 single releases there were several number one singles both in UK and in US making it one of her most successful albums and Madonna the Queen of Pop Music. After a closer look at the songs feautured on this album it's undeniable that it's fullpacked with great songs, mostly dance-pop songs that always was Madonna's greatest quality.
The first song "Papa Don't Preach" deals with a young women who has become pregnant and wants to keep the baby and not to an abortion but also raise the child. This stirred some controversy, but it's among Madonna's best and most memorable songs. "Open Your Heart" is an catchy uptempo and just like "Papa" it reached number 1. "White Heat" is simular too the previous and perhaps should have been single released also since it's too good to be surpassed. "Live to Tell" is among Madonna's finest and most serious ballads and deals with facing a very comlicated situation. Quite new for an artist that had heavily relied on lightweight dance-pop until this song was released and made it to the top of the charts aswell. "Where's The Party" is a dance-pop song, but was no single.
The next song, title track is a 80's style bubblegum pop song written for her then husband Sean Penn. In the video we'll find Madonna with a 50 style Marylyn Monroe haisrtyle. In reached #1 in Uk and #3 in the US and is undoubtly a classic Madonna song. "La Isla Bonita" is a latin influenced pop song that even uses a few spanish words in is lyrics. It was her 5th single and also topped the UK charts in 1987. "Jimmy Jimmy" another dance-pop song that is rather forgettable and closer "Love Makes The World Go Round" follows the same trend but it's about world peace, and quite good song that could have been made a single.
Overall, Madonna's third album is one of her best and got plenty of notable songs to make it worthwile. Madonna was getting more serious on this album also and tackles some issues she hadn't done before. She proved she was a good songwriter, entertainer and became a superstar with "True Blue" and would only get better on "Like A Prayer" 3 years later. An album for your collection.

Trying to find SONG from the movie TRUE ROMANCE.......2006-09-30
Hi, I have the soundtrack.. but I am trying to find out the name of the like RAP song that was playing in the beginning when Drexl Spivy shot Samuel Jackson when he was picking up the cocaine? It was a rap song and it was really good.
I could be wrong what scene but there was like a hard core rap song that was playing in the back ground. If somone knows can you let me know what song that was. I know its a long shot but I thought I would try.
Thanks in advance.
Great Mix.......2006-08-22
The CD contains a great mix of slow and up tempo songs. Good for using in the car for going on a long drive. Track 1 and 6 are very soothing - on the style of tubular bells.
You're so cool..........2006-06-28
I bought the CD for the "theme" track, You're So Cool by Hans Zimmer. But, it turns out that the whole thing is pretty darn good. =)
True Musica: Zimmer v. Orff, "True Romance" v. "Badlands".......2004-12-11
One of my favorite CDs from one of my favorite movies! The only improvement would be the inclusion of the 8 missing songs seen in the movie song credits, especially the Big Bopper's "Chantilly Lace" (Hell-o-o-o, Baby!) and Burl Ive's "Little Bitty Tear". At least this CD is so much more complete with the inclusion of the Hans Zimmer homage to the 1973 movie "Badlands" main theme music "Gassenhauer" Street Song from Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman's "Musica Poetica - Orff-Schulwerk". Zimmer did NOT "rip off Orff" as some reviewers assert.
Now for the truth: The main theme "Gassenhauer" was composed by Orff's associate Gunild Keetman BASED ON A 1536 WORK FOR LUTE BY HANS NEUSIEDLER! Orff's stated goal for the Schulwerk: "Improvisations which encourage further improvisation". This is precisely what Hans Zimmer did when he PRODUCED (no writing credits on soundtrack CD) 3 pieces loosely based on "Gassenhauer" for the film "True Romance", written by Quentin Tarantino as his tribute to the Terrence Malick movie "Badlands": "You're So Cool", "Stars At Dawn", & "Amid The Chaos Of The Day". These are a fine & fitting tribute to Malick, Keetman/Orff, and, yes, especially Nuesiedler - Zimmer did NOT "rip off Orff". Is not imitation the sincereist form of flattery? Just as Patricia Arquette's Alabama narration evokes comparison to Sissy Spacek's Holly ongoing commentary, the two recurring musical themes are marked by their differences as well as their similarities: Gassenhauer is menacingly prophetic and languid as it traces Kit & Holly's diverging paths to doom & gloom, while "You're So Cool" is promisingly upbeat as it steers Clarence & 'Bama to follow the sun to their ultimate destiny with Elvis. Thank our lucky "Stars At Dawn" that Tony Scott didn't choose the alternate ending that surely would have bombed "Amid The Chaos Of The Day".
Note for "Badlands" music fans: Unfortunately, there never was a soundtrack album produced for "Badlands". The five (5!) "Badlands" songs from Musica Poetica can, however, be found on the 1994 BMG release (RCA Victor Red Seal) 6-CD box set version of the original Orff/Keetman recordings done between 1963 & 1975 on 10 LPs. There are at least 4 other "Badlands" pieces on CDs 2, 3, 4 & 6!
Even better than the movie........2004-01-07
This soundtrack has a level of coolness to it, that is only matched by "Wild At Heart", and "Natural Born Killers". By no means your typical selection, it's special. Other than top-notch songs by "Chris Isaak", "Soundgarden", and "Charlie Sexton", this has music from artists I was unfamiliar with, like "Nymphomania". But the best thing here is the compositions from "Hans Zimmer". They bring you right back to the film, and are excellent insrumentals. The only thing that could have made this better, is a few snippets from "Elvis", (Val Kilmer).

Customer Reviews:
True Blue CD is a beautiful remembrance.......2007-02-21
My mother and I first heard John Williamson's song "True Blue" when he sang it at Steve Irwin's memorial service. It is a fantastic song, a lovely remembrance of a loved one who has passed. My mom was terminally ill, and we will be using it at her memorial service. The CD is mostly upbeat, with lots of happy Aussie folk songs. There are, in fact, over 40 songs on the CD. But "True Blue" is Williamson's chef d'oeuvre. It's worth the price of the CD simply to have this song in your collection.
Can't get it away from Mum.......2007-02-17
I gave this to Mum for Christmas with the selfish intent of her letting me 'keep it for her'. It's not worked out that way! She's been listening to the CD in her car ever since. She keeps saying I really must hear "Mister Emu" and "The Vasectomy Song", but she never makes a move to let me borrow it. Even when hearing "True Blue" made her cry while driving and she said I must take the CD away, she's kept it. She has graduated to quoting bits of some song about a crocodile. I am seriously considering buying my own copy because at this rate I never ever will get to even borrow the album let alone 'keep it for her'.
Fond memories.......2007-01-20
This music reminds me of the trip of a lifetime my daughter and I spent in Australia last summer. Great folk music from a very special country.
True Blue is great.......2007-01-07
"True Blue" John Williamson's 25th anniversary CD is great !!!!!
He is such a wonderful musician. His guitar playing is awesome.
I am more than pleased with this CD; it puts a smile on my face every time I hear it!
Jphn Williamson.......2006-10-25
I haven't gotten this CD yet but I have to say that I learned about him from Steve Irwin's funeral. His music just captured me and I became an instant fan. It's too bad that it took such a tragic event to bring him to USA citizen's fan base.

Robert De Cormier's remarkable arrangement and Marie Spar Dymit's and Lynette Johnson's pure vocals of "Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier" are well worth the price of the entire CD.
Incredible..Worth 30 stars.......2007-05-16
The Dale Warland Singers are my benchmark by which I judge all other choirs. The uniformity of sound, blend, and precise entrances, uniformity are incredible - almost inhuman. Excluding the all male Chanticleer from the roster, this was the finest choir in America. Now that they have broken up, buy all of their CD's you won't be disappointed!
Superb singing matched with superb arrangements.......2004-07-03
A project like this one inevitably highlights the skill of arrangers, and Dale Warland has selected some of the most talented anywhere. Most of these selections will be familiar to listeners, but I doubt most people have heard, for example, "Red River Valley" in Carol Barnett's haunting version here, and ditto for her magnificent "Deep River."
The disc opens with a spectacular, panoramic "Shenandoah" that takes maximum advantage of the Dale Warland Singers' refined sound, and things only get better (if that's possible). Other favorites are a cheery, fizzing "Nelly Bly" and Mark Keller's strong reworking of Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More."
Throughout the recording, the freshness of the arrangements is matched by the irresistible singing. This group is known for its outstanding performances and recordings, but this must be counted as one of their all-time best. The sound quality is terrific, capturing the gorgeous blend and precision of the group in a natural-sounding acoustic. Just stunning.
Beautiful music.......2003-07-03
I bought this CD after hearing a few of the recordings on our local NPR radio station. I was not disappointed in any of the selections. Very beautiful.
Beautiful Music, Yet There Is No There Here.......2003-01-13
The Dale Warland Singers (DWS) are among the relatively few musical professionals, who by their aesthetic standards and demonstrated artistry, have taken the less traveled and narrow road to exemplary artistic excellence.
The sound quality and acoustics are excellently engineered in this 20-bit original recording. The most delicately blend and inflection of the singers' voice can be heard. This sheaf of choral works has once existed in real space and time in the kaleidoscopic folklife of past generations. In recording the "Blue Wheat", the 40-member DWS, the creme de la creme of professional choral ensembles, has elevated the common oral tradition of American folk music into a rarified choral art form a capella "in the style of the chapel."
If the soul of the DWS is a capella singing, then Warland and the arrangers are the wings of the same soul. Among the kapellmeisters whose arrangements have graced this folksong anthology are the late Norman Luboff and Roger Wagner. Also included in this album are contemporary arrangements by other esteemed composers: John Rutter (conductor of The Cambridge Singers), Carol Barnett (the DWS resident composer from 1992 to 2001), and Stephen Paulus.
Gertrude Stein is famous for saying of her childhood home, Oakland, California, "When you get there, there's no there there." Purportedly, Stein opined this city by the San Francisco Bay lacked a defining sense of place. Bel canto notwithstanding, the folk melodies of "Blue Wheat" invoke a longing for something no longer possible. The abyss between the America today and the its past is impossible to bridge. Already, we have yielded to the abstractness of political correctness. Our past is either neglected, actively destroyed, or selectively museumed. We do not live in an understood land and culture. There is no there here in the presence of this music. It is only the poignancy of the moment that these beautifully rendered tunes live in our mind. We have to accept this reality as part and parcel of our rootlessness.
If the Oakland Raiders do make it to and win the Superbowl in 2003, there is a there there for some in the football community, albeit fleeting.

Album Description
With a strong, smooth tone and an amazing flow of fresh ideas every time he soloed, tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks should have been a major jazz artist, but his legacy is confined to a series of dates that he did for Blue Note as a sideman and leader. "True Blue" is the only album under his own name to come out in his lifetime. He and Freddie Hubbard had recorded Hubbard's "Open Sesame" a week earlier. Based on these two albums alone, Brooks should have been recognized as an important new voice in jazz. This CD adds to two alternate takes to the original LP.
* Bonus tracks, not part of the original LP.
Recorded on June 25, 1960 at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey
TINA BROOKS, tenor sax, FREDDIE HUBBARD, trumpet; DUKE JORDAN, piano; SAM JONES, bass; ART TAYLOR, drums
Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal!.......2006-08-19
Like many of his peers, Tina Brooks life was cut short by a drug overdose. However in the short time he was with us, he recorded some phenomenal stuff. This is by far his best album under his name, with songs that both flow from the bop days, yet maintain such a timelss quality that they seem current today.
Truly no jazz/Blue Note collection is complete without this disk!
No Bluenote collection is complete without TrueBlue.......2006-05-28
Tina Brooks has a most original sound, which is both sad and extremely beautiful at the same time. This is one of my top 10 music albums of all time. No BlueNote collection is complete with it.
Wonderful.......2006-03-09
Blue Note was on the mark to re-release this classic. Tina Brook's style of blues laced jazz is a sound that will bring joy to your soul. A must have CD for any jazz collection.
Necessary Reissue.......2005-02-20
I had been after this album for about six years, but knew that Blue Note would eventually give it the proper reissue treatment. Tina Brooks has long been a cult hero in jazz and now that True Blue has been included in Blue Note's Rudy Van Gelder series he will find additional fans. Brooks, like many other jazzmen, lived hard and died young. He sounds like he's bleeding soul on each note that he plays. Thats not to say his music is depressing, on the contrary he write bluesy classic 50/60s Blue Note hard bop. Brooks' highly melodic solos owe much to his background as an R&B saxophonist. His sense of melody and that ultra lived in sense of the blues is really what makes him a notable player. On True Blue , Brooks is backed by a typically stellar Blue Note rhythm section and is joined by Freddie Hubbard on the trumpet. It really is the Tina Brooks show however as he takes long solos on every cut. Hard to pick any particular standout track, but the entire program is steeped in the blues. Several of the tunes remind me of Brooks' "Street Singer" (still my favorite Brooks piece). I highly recommend True Blue, and its likely his finest album, but Brooks' entire catalog (four albums) is pretty much necessary. Get this and get "Back to the Tracks" before it goes out of print.

Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

The best? I think not........2004-01-11
This disc includes some songs that, while I like them, are not what people might consider the "best" of G&S. Of course, anything by G&S is good, it's still not the "best of the best."
There has got to be something that better represents the G&S canon.
can't understand the words.......2004-01-08
Don't know about those other reviewers, but I just can't make out very much of the lyrics. Maybe those folk have better CD players or better hearing, but it's pretty much a blur to me. I strongly recommend "The Ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan" instead.

The Most Beautiful Music In The World.......2007-06-25
Simply stated, Andre Rieu performs some of the most beautiful music in the world today. "Dreaming" is my favorite but in the end, I can likely say that anything he has done is my favorite. You are transported to a
beautiful universe where it is rather difficult to return to normal everyday life.
Dreaming with peace.......2007-02-10
Wonderful, peaceful music to make a quiet time a near spiritual experience.
Dreamy is how you feel.......2003-01-15
I am a great Andre Rieu fan and a Strauss fan. This was even more relaxing than Andre's other works. Great stress relief after a long day or just to sit and relax with your special someone. If people like Andre Rieu, you may also want to try Tim Janis who is a great composer/conductor. He will also relax you.
Too Dreamy.......2002-12-28
Music beautiful but too dreamy.........can easily put you to sleep. My fault...should have previewed first. I was looking for something more lush and upbeat like much of his other stuff.
Same old soup warmed over.......2002-12-25
There is entirely too much material in this CD that has been done (and done...) by others. In addiion, there are too many tracks that are easy listening. I was looking for light classical. And very few of the classical tracks stray very far from a very well beaten path. This CD is probably the last Andre Rieu CD I will buy. Sorry.

Cool dance record from Queen Madonna........2006-06-02
Madonna's True Blue is a nine-track masterpiece. I got this album because I love the track, Live to Tell. To my surprise I ended up loving all the tracks. La Isla Bonita, Where's the Party, and White Heat are standout tracks. Perfect and engaging disc. The first sign of maturity from Madonna was this album, she wrote every song, co-produced, and her voice sounds spectacular here. Excellent album to add to your Madonna collection.
It's gotta be True Blue!.......2005-08-22
I have been listening to Madonna since the very early 90's and True Blue was my very first album from her and ever since I have loved this ENTIRE album!!! I noticed that a lot of people HATE Jimmy Jimmy, I don't know why!! Jimmy Jimmy is such a cool upbeat song to dance to and it TOTALLY reminds me of a 50's or 60's girl group song!! I love it!!
My all time favorite song off this album though is the title track, True Blue. This is THE song from the 50's!! I mean the whole sound and style and singing sounds TOTALLY 50's!!! I LOVE it!!! I love the part that goes "True Love Oh Baby, True Love Oh Baby, True Love Oh Baby" Another favorite is La Isla Bonita. This is such a beautiful Spanish style ballad!! Live To Tell is a hauntingly beautiful ballad, I love it! White Heat is a cool upbeat song that has dialog and this was dedicated to Jimmy Cagney. Papa Don't Preach is another favorite upbeat song, just like Open Your Heart, they're both awesome upbeat songs! Where's The Party and Love Makes The World Go Round are awesome upbeat songs too!
There are NO bad songs on here! They're all amazing!! Especially True Blue because of the unique 50's girl group style and La Isla Bonita because of the Spanish sound to it! A MUST HAVE for Madonna fans!
madonna never disappoints.......2005-08-08

The BEST ALBUM EVER!!!!.......2005-06-28
Forget "Thriller", "Nevermind", "Rumours", or any of those albums that hit the #1 album spot. This one is the best!! Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, Live To Tell . . . what more could one person want? The only song I'm not too crazy about is "La Isla Bonita", it doesn't fit well with the rest of the album. BUY THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
great pop album from madonna.......2005-06-19
if one could argue that madonna was for the teeny boppers with her first two albums, this album is proof that madonna had always appealed to a variety of audiences as she blends contemporary dance/pop and beautiful soft rock ballads on this CD. Live To Tell, Papa Don't Preach La Isla Bonita are songs with strong melodies, meaningful messages and beautiful music that I still constantly hear on adult contemporary radio these days. True Blue is a cute song with a cute video, and Open Your Heart is a great pop song with a naughty video, but yet appealing. True Blue flows great as an album, just as like a virgin and you can hear the maturity in madonna's voice growing with time as well. Definitely buy it today, there is a reason why songs on this CD are still very popular on the radio today
