Coleman Hawkins would have turned 100 in 2004, and to honor that milestone, Bluebird has put together this irresistible CD/DVD collection. Framed by two versions of "Body and Soul"--the historic 1939 effort and one from 1956--the CD provides a satisfying overview of the man who established the tenor saxophone as a soloing force in the late 1920s and was open enough to changing styles over the years to embrace the bebop innovations of Charlie Parker (even participating in a 1963 encounter (sampled here) with modernist Sonny Rollins). Bean, as he was known, recorded for many labels; these selections for RCA range far and wide, representing his stints in the bands of Fletcher Henderson and Lionel Hampton and featuring as sidemen the likes of Benny Carter, J.J. Johnson, and Fats Navarro. The DVD includes four rare, shakily preserved, but still treasurable TV performances from the 1950s that (though uncredited in the notes) find him playing with Pee Wee Russell, Lester Young, and Charlie Shavers. --Lloyd Sachs

Customer Reviews:
Glenn is still the GREATEST!!.......2004-12-27
I bought this CD set not so much for the song content but for the included DVD.Neither disappointed me.
This isn't your usual "greatest hits" package but an unusual compilation of tunes culled from his studio, live and AAF band catalogues.Along with his better known studio numbers such as "In the Mood" and "String of Pearls" we have included here "Along the Sante Fe Trail" and "When you wish upon a Star" which you don't see/hear often.
There are three live numbers included, all billed as "previously unreleased".All these tunes HAVE been released just not on the RCA label. But they are well restored.
There is one AAF number "Begin the Beguine" sung wonderfully by Tony Martin.
The last tune is a remix of Pennsylvannia 6-5000 by British hip-hop myster Theo Keating, aka Wiseguys.
All of the above have been remastered in 24 bit digital sound and are quite a revelation to hear. The sound is very clean and crisp.
The accompanying DVD is a marvellous addition to this set.It includes among other things the "Chattanooga Choo Choo" number from Sun Valley Serenade,a few clips from a TV show in the early 60s featuring Ray McKinley and Johnnny Desmond and some very rare footage of Glenns' AAF band in England during a war bond rally at which Gen.Jimmy Doolittle was in attendance. The DVD only runs around 35 minutes and certainly leaves one hankering for more but I really liked what I saw.
As a 100th anniversary release this collection does leave alot to be desired as some previous reviewers have stated. What COULD have been included or released boggles the mind as RCA continues to sit on their collective backsides year after year releasing pitiful dribs and drabs of rare material that sits for the most part collecting dust in their storage facilities, especially Glenns'live material and his AAF recordings.
Having said that however my rating and review in all fairness must be based soley on the material at hand and the quality of its' presentation. And that is my basis for the 4 star rating.
For the first time or new listener to Glenns' music this is a great starter and introduction to the greatest big band and leader of the 20th century. If your a dyed-in-the-wool fan like myself then while(musically) there may be really nothing new under the sun for you the big attraction here is the remastered 24 bit sound AND the accompanying DVD.You'll be pleasantly surprised and I'm sure make a special place for this in your collection.
A missed opportunity!.......2004-06-10
I also agree with the previous reviewers.
This was another missed opportunity.
Shame on you BMG!!! (Big Money Greed)
BMG could have celebrated better........2004-05-14
I also agree with the previous reviewers. This was such a missed opportunity. They could of at least done what they did with the recent Artie Shaw box set and the Duke Ellington multi-disc retrospective several years ago where his entire RCA catalogue was remastered and a fitting tribute. Instead we get the usual dribs and drabs of new things and the same basic Miller songs while the rare gems stay in vaults.
I am giving this 5 stars for one reason only, the magnificent remastering of Doug Pomeroy from the original metal parts. In the Mood is at the correct pitch for the first time since the original 78's and the noise reduction doesn't muddy out the low passages. The sonics are far superior here - nothing sounds tinny or distorted. Mr. Pomeroy has mastered historically important jazz works for Mosaic and other labels and was responsible for Young Blue Eyes: The Birth of a Crooner, the incredible recent release of live Dorsey-Sinatra recordings. Pomeroy gets the 5 stars - BMG gets the back of my hand!
An okay best-of which holds out great promise.......2004-04-27
This may not be perfect, but it's still a pretty cool set -- one swell CD's worth of Miller's best, including several live tracks recorded at the height of the band's fame. In addition, this new best-of also includes -- get this -- an extra DVD of video material as well! Admittedly, this video bonus could have been more glamorous... There's only one full cut of Miller and his band playing in their prime (taken from the 1941 film, "Sun Valley Serenade"), while the other clips include TV appearances by later editions of the band, filmed years after Miller's untimely death, as well as old movie trailers, 'Fifties advertisements for the first Miller LPs on RCA, and -- most intriguing -- vintage footage of the Miller Orchestra pepping up the troops at a War Bond rally in England, as well as some heartwarmingly informal home movies shot on tour by Miller's bass player back in the band's heyday. I'm sure licensing all the sexiest Miller material is hard, but it still would have been nice to see more material from, say, the 1942 film "Orchestra Wives" (which had a plot that revolved around the Miller Orchestra, and in which the man himself has several speaking parts), some more concert footage, or even something from the documentary America's Musical Hero (which was produced by BMG, after all!) However, despite its shortcomings, the DVD is in itself an indication that the major labels are coming to see that multimedia packages -- with both music and video -- may be an added incentive for an info-savvy public that wants to feel it's getting its money's worth... Let's hope they go on to do similar, bigger, better projects for other artists soon! And that they come back to Miller and throw in a ton more archival material... We'll be here, eager and willing to snap it up!
This is like leftover mashed potatoes.......2004-04-24
I have to agree with most of Mr. Fletcher's review comments. This was a missed opportunity. The 100th anniversary of Glenn Miller's birth should have been a great time to release so much of the rare "live" material that sits in the Miller archives. It could have been the right time to re-issue the big Miller box set of the complete commercial recordings(1938-42), in improved sound quality, as the original box (issued more than ten years ago) is now far surpassed by recent remastering techniques.
Instead we get (mostly) a rehash of the usual standards, already available in many CD releases, including "Pennsyvania 6-5000" repeated on two tracks(!)--including that second, pointless, remix version. The good liner notes alluded to Miller's "Stardust" being on this CD, but it is nowhere to be found. Was it bumped for the remix? That ought to be retitled: "Pennsylvania DEEP-SIXED 5000." I'm not against remixing for the young fans, but this was not the place for it.
The dvd is also a disappointment. Some fascinating clips to be sure, but there is no context provided for them. They are simply fragments that you click from the menu. One wonders why the BMG folks couldn't have included the fine PBS one-hour bio on Miller that contains some of these very clips, and puts things in an interesting historical perspective. That would have made for a wonderful keepsake.
I recommend people not buy this set, and those who have purchased it, let RCA/BMG know that the Miller audience deserves better treatment than this. After all, we won't be around for the 200th anniversary set.

Since their birth over 100 years ago, these legendary composers have produced some of the greatest American songs ever written. Their musical prolificacy is evident by the enduring legacy that flourished even today.
Pianist Beegie Adair, a jazz legend in her own right, pays homage to the great American composers who have reached the centennial celebration of their of their life and their music in this treasury of song.
Respected music journalist, Will Friedwald adds interesting insights into the composers, the songs and the artist who pays tribute to them with extensive liner notes, biographies and commentary.

This is a "must have" for your CD collection. Whether you are having a dinner party, or just need some relaxing music, these CD's are the best. The arrangements are wonderful. Buy! Buy! Buy!
what kind of self respecting jazz pianist does an Elvis cd?.......2003-11-29
Anyone who calls themselves a jazz pianist and does a tribute to Elvis is not a jazz pianist. OK so her cd tribute to sinatra is cool, but come on Elvis, skip this.
Beegie Adair is one sophisticated lady........2003-08-16
The understated elegance of Beegie Adair's pianism belies the ambition of her "Centennial Composers" project. Artur Schnabel, the great Austrian interpreter of Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms, once said he specialized in "music that is greater than it can ever be played." Listening to these discs, it's obvious that Ms. Adair feels exactly the same way about the songs of Ellington, Gershwin, Porter, Berlin and Rodgers. Her interpretations of their songs show impeccable taste and enormous harmonic invention; yet her improvisations always underscore the beauty of the original melodies, rather than indulging in the "Hey, Look at Me!" riffing of so many other jazz pianists. These CDs are a perfect example of music you can listen to when you don't know what you want to listen to; they make great background music, but also amply repay close repeat listenings.
You're going to love this!.......2003-04-28
If you have not heard Beegie and her trio play, you are in for a treat. This lady plays great standards with an easy swing and excellent arrangements. I have 99% of Beegie's recordings, and every cut is tastefully performed. If you can't afford the whole collection, then you might want to introduce yourself to her music by purchasing the Sinatra or Nat Cole albums. You can't go wrong with any of Beegie's recordings. Enjoy!

Benny Goodman's 100th birthday wouldn't have been until 2009, but Bluebird has loosened the parameters for its Centennial Collection series. So here is yet another collection of the King of Swing's recordings from the mid-to-late '30s, including his legendary collaborations with arranger Fletcher Henderson--but not such Columbia items as the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert. The classics here include "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "King Porter Stomp," and there's a guest appearance by Ella Fitzgerald. Although the bulk of the material features the full orchestra, the set also includes one track by his trio, two by the quartet, and a 1936 all-star septet under Gene Krupa's name. The DVD ranges from film performances of the 1940s to clips from the 1966 Belgian Jazz Festival. The closing audio-only interview with Goodman comes from an unidentified date. --Lloyd Sachs

One-disc intro to Goodman's 1935-39 music, plus a DVD!.......2005-03-24
It may be an exaggeration to call bandleader and clarinetist Benny Goodman the king of swing, particularly when there are a few others from that era whom are second to none (Duke Ellington, anyone?). On the other hand, it isn't quite right that in recent years some of Goodman's key recordings aren't even reissued under his own name (e.g., THE GENIUS OF CHARLIE CHRISTIAN boxed set). Granted, guitarist Christian is one of early jazz's most innovative and influential soloists. Yet Goodman's presence is not exactly an afterthought that is undeserving of top -- or any other -- billing. CENTENNIAL restores the leader's name to his own recordings, and hopefully not just because Christian isn't present on these cuts.
CENTENNIAL picks off the top of Goodman's 1935-1939 RCA recordings, and there are obviously a lot of still-provocative tracks to choose from. A few pop standards are covered ("Body and Soul," "Good-Bye," "Moonglow," etc.), but the majority of the CD focuses on large and small group recordings that for the most part highlight a variety of that era's greatest soloists. Goodman himself is always remarkable, and such sidepersons as Roy Eldridge, Ziggy Elman, or Harry James (trumpet), Gene Krupa (drums), Lionel Hampton (vibes), Teddy Wilson or Jess Stacy (piano) and others keep things interesting from track to track (in no small part due to the arrangements of Fletcher Henderson and others). Unfortunately the booklet doesn't list the complete personnel in the session data, but the liner notes fill in some of the gaps. Only three of the twenty-one tracks feature vocalists (including a young Ella Fitzgerald on "Goodnight, My Love"), so you get the idea that the band is in the forefront on this CD. Although the 1938 Carnegie Hall version of "Sing, Sing, Sing" is untouchable, the studio version here comes reasonably close to the excitement of the live version (and is better-recorded).
The DVD collects a variety of clips mostly from the swing era (and lifted from feature-length motion pictures), including "Why Don't You Do Right?" from STAGE DOOR CANTEEN (featuring Peggy Lee on vocals). There is also newsreel coverage of the 1955 opening of THE BENNY GOODMAN STORY and an audio-only interview. Not to be overlooked is footage from a 1966 jazz festival, where one might expect to see Goodman past his prime. Yet while the musical context may have been reclassified from modern to traditional, his clarinet playing is still outstanding, arguably even moreso than on the earlier recordings (this is the one and only area where I respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer). Overall, the before-mentioned GENIUS OF CHARLIE CHRISTIAN may be the first place to go for Goodman's greatest recordings, but CENTENNIAL is also highly recommended, particularly for those who want a single-disc set of highlights.
A good set that could have been better.......2004-09-01
I don't quite understand what this set is the Centennial of, in regards to BG, but it has its merits. One has to understand that this is yet another Greatest Hits type release.
On the CD, I like most of the inclusions. 'King Porter Stomp', 'Bugle Call Rag', and 'Sing, Sing, Sing' are essential Goodman hits. But where are others like 'Don't Be That Way'? And BMG seems to always put 'And The Angels Sing' on Goodman CDs. There are much better tracks with Martha Tilton. And it seems every BMG release of BG includes 'Goodnight, My Love', when 'Did You Mean It?' was the the best Goodman song with Ella Fitzgerald. 'Angels', and 'Goodnight' should not have been on this CD, enough is enough. Most of the other tracks are worthy additions. Considering that Goodman did nearly 300 sides for Victor, it would be a hard task choosing one CD worth of them. Adding 'I Hope Gabriel Likes My Music', that BG did with Gene Krupa's then new band was a nice touch. Overall, I think the best single CD of BG currently in print is 'The Ultimate Collection' on the Prism label.
On the DVD (which is only about 40 minutes long and copy protected; I would buy VHS too but not available) I have several problems. First, there is a movie trailer for 'The Gang's All Here', which shows a few seconds of BG doing 'Minnie The Moocher'. Couldn't we have seen the whole performance instead of the trailer? Most of the trailer seems to be of Carmen Miranda singing badly. This is not a Carmen Miranda set. The four clips from the 1966 Belgian Jazz Festival are a tired BG past his prime. Performances from 'Hollywood Hotel' would have been better inclusions (I'm lucky to have a copy of this virtually impossible to get film). No 'Hollywood Hotel', no 'Big Broadcast Of 1937', no 'Song Is Born' clips is a huge disappointment. This leaves the PBS documentary, 'Adventures In The Kingdom Of Swing', still the best source of BG video. I wish someone would do a DVD/VHS of all possible BG theater film performances, including the 'shorts', without editing or voice-overs.
At less than $20, this is a good value. Some of the video will thrill collectors obsessed with every last BG tidbit, but I was disappointed. Thankfully the DVD was essentially free. The CD music choices could have been a bit different, but are mostly a very good selection.

Decades into his self-imposed retirement, Artie Shaw is too often thought of as the popular swing bandleader and clarinetist who scored with "Begin the Beguine"--and not appreciated as the brilliant innovator and risk-taker who skirted big-band formula. The 2001 box set, Self Portrait, programmed by the man himself, showed off his music in full multi-dimensional flower. This CD/DVD set, part of Bluebird's Centennial Collections series, shines a light on his genius via its brainy arrangements, brawny swing, and luminous melodies. Concentrating on the period from 1938 to 1941 and featuring radio-broadcast recordings, the set will satisfy big-band nostalgia with tunes such as "Beguine" and "Frenesi" while engaging contemporary tastes with the clever touches in songs such as "Traffic Jam" and "The Grabtown Grapple" (which features Roy Eldridge and is one of only two tracks here by his phenomenal Grammercy 5 small group). There's also Shaw's full-blown "Concerto for Clarinet." The DVD includes the hokey short film, Class in Swing (1939), two performances from the forgettable 1939 Fred Astaire musical Second Chorus, and an engaging 2001 interview with the cranky, insightful Shaw. --Lloyd Sachs
Customer Reviews:
The amazing Artie Shaw.......2007-02-09
This is a tremendous introduction to Artie Shaw, a band leader who captured the spunk of swing like no other. He grooves in an intense beat akin to a rock n' roll guitarist absorbed in pulsating to the magic of his instrument. Many of his numbers require full attention. This is not passive background music. If you want to swing in high gear you cannot overlook Artie Shaw.
Artie Shaw Good music / DVD RIPOFF.......2006-06-21
I purchased this collection solely for the DVD. I have all of the music from the CD on various collections and it is indeed great music. I was hoping that the DVD was going to show many clips of his performances. Instead you get two video clips from a movie - the first clip is not even two minutes long and the second clip "Concerto For Clarinet" (a great song that is over nine minutes long), taken from the movie at about three minutes. There was a "School of Swing" segment that was ok, but nothing great. I can't believe that these are the only good clips available. The interview session is also just ok and after viewing it once I don't think you'll ever go back to it. Where's the performances???? There is nothing special here except the price - it's too high!!! If I was just rating the music it would get five stars. However I believe that most folks will make this purchase because of the video. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.
The Intellectual King Of Swing.......2005-08-18
Not only was his music intricate not "simple" swing, but the man was an immense mind..the CD is great, wonderful recordings, many live broadcasts presented where Artie later on the DVD explains a preferance for live in the moment playing as different from studio wizardry..clearly a scholarly person the DVD shows you the man's uniqueness with his warm
ruminations on it all and life..discussing art and entertainment, his upbringing, his place in music history, his individuality, the similarities of Miles and Dizzy and how they differed all with a great DVD of movie clips and the stellar music CD.If you are into swing at all listen to this CD for a truly unique voice.

Excellent remastering; Uneven Collection.......2007-05-05
Dorsey is here represented by a very wide cross-section of his art, at least chronologically. There are fine examples from the twenties, such as "Add a Little Wiggle" all the way to his music-making in the fifties and the connection with Elvis. Personally I consider the selections good, but not quite good enough, especially given three CDs. Tommy Dorsey certainly had dozens and dozens of records on the charts. In a three CD set it's almost legitimately possible to leave off as many of these as are included. My problem is that after sixty years the cream does rise to the surface - Dorsey never had THAT many BIG hits that you could, as this CD set does, leave off so many of his best numbers. This set includes fine well-done booklets with good articles, but to be blunt - this remains a pretty expensive set for the sum of the music. A tribute to Dorsey, at least in my mind, should include ALL his best numbers and go from there. There would still be pleanty of room for variety. Three CDs should have made it possible to do so.
Dorsey recordings were always among the best and clearest sounding of his era - Dorsey's perfectionism carried over into the recording studio. Whether or not Dorsey's was the top band, it certainly was a very good one, and nothing done in the last forty years comes close to capturing the Swing era's best bands. Dorsey had some very, very talented musicians: his band could and certainly did swing with the best of them if the music dictated. Dorsey was a huge fan of the violinist Fritz Kreisler - and Kreisler's broad rubato and full even tone are certainly replicated in Dorsey's trombone-playing. Listening to the famous Sinatra numbers you can follow along as Dorsey leads the way and sets the style, with Frank following up the trombone lead with his vocal. If one listens carefully passion IS there, but with Dorsey his playing, the actual sound of his trombone, tended to express itself in an sense of unpushed reserve; there was a constant elegaic tone, grand and wonderful - Dorsey seemed incapable of turning melodies into empty formula. Control and perfectionism gripped his music-making, but not quite to the excess some suggest. Dorsey's great popularity inclines critics to knock his real achievements. His music-making was at its best quite spectacular, uniquely and splendidly his own. And it came through a long hard apprenticeship. Behind the music was tremendous will power - Tommy Dorsey and his brother Jimmy were real hard scrabble fighters.
There are several single album sets of Tommy Dorsey to try if you wish to own only one. If you're on a very tight budget and want quite a few Tommy Dorsey numbers you might consider the 4 CD box set from Membran - not quite as good of sound, and the Membran's price suggests it is likely to be a piracy. The choice is yours.
excellent overview of Tommy's work with EXCELLENT remastering.......2006-07-19
Admitedly, this is the first Tommy Dorsey music I have purchased in a few years. I'm so glad I bought this one. It has OUTSTANDING liner notes and great remastering. It is essentially three sections. His sideman days, bandleading days in the studio, and the live broadcasts. Mix in a few unreleased cuts and some great hits (although the major ones are missing) and you have a great retrospect. I'm glad that the big hits are not here, since we have heard them over and over again. What this set does is help you appreciate the great talent that is Tommy Dorsey. His great ability to find new talent and the mind boggling discipline of his band. If you love Tommy Dorsey, you must buy this set. It is presented and remastered superbly. Now if RCA/BMG would only do this to some of their other jazz greats....
Swingin' overview that forgoes many hits.......2005-10-24
Although regarded as a giant of the swing era, Dorsey's legacy seems to have a tinge of second banana. As an iconic bandleader, he's often placed a half-notch below Benny Goodman or Glenn Miller, and as a trombonist he's revered more for his technical consistency than his innovation. These aren't necessarily unfair or inaccurate assessments, but when one considers the totality of his career, rather than just the sort of high-points that jut out as oft-repeated modern-day movie soundtrack icons, it's clear that he sits evenly with the elite of the era.
The hallmark of Dorsey's work was his relentless (and at time, violent) passion for perfection - something that shows in the tidiness of his band's arrangements and the clarity and precision with which his instrumentalists play. The flipside is that there's simply not as much passion in his music as others of his era. As a trombonist, Dorsey developed an especially smooth (and, at times, passive) style; it's distinctive, but not as engaging as other instrumentalists of his time. In contrast, his rougher skills on the trumpet, employed early on as a sideman, show a fire that he didn't often bring the bigger horn. Even his trombone showcase, 1947's "Trombonology," is more of an exercise in chops than groundbreaking musical thought.
This 3-CD set opens with some of Dorsey's earliest recordings, as a sideman for The Golden Gate Orchestra, Sam Lanin, Paul Whiteman and others. The trombone style he'd ply as a bandleader was already forming in these sessions; even when lending a fat tone to his solo on 1928's "Add a Little Wiggle" his horn remained subservient to the band. Dorsey soon moved on to perform and record with his brother Jimmy, but their earliest hits, such as 1928's "Coquette" and the following year's "Let's Do It (Let's Fall in Love)," are missing, as are a surprising number of his early RCA chart toppers, including "On Treasure Island," "The Music Goes Round and Round" and "Alone".
Disc 2 essays Dorsey's years as a bandleader, though without the benefit of many more seminal hit singles. Included are classics such as Irving Berlin's "Marie" and the staccato instrumental "Boogie Woogie," as well as oddities like "The Hawaiian War Chant." Disc 3 collects sixteen radio recordings that show off Dorsey's first-take perfectionism in a live setting. In addition to classic sides from the 1940's war years (variously featuring Sinatra, Connie Haines and The Pied Pipers on vocals), the disc closes with Duke Ellington sitting in (and delivering pre-song shtick with Dorsey) for a 1946 take of "Take the 'A' Train," and Elvis fronting the band in 1956 for "Heartbreak Hotel."
The omission of early hits is a surprising choice, and though this set may still paint a balanced musical view of Dorsey's catalog, it's unlikely to match the memories held by fans of his arc of popularity. What's here makes for great listening, it just isn't a complete picture of Dorsey's fame. [©2005 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

GREATEST COLE PORTER COLLECTION EVER!!!_A classy, witty, joyous, wonderfully rich piece of American history.......2006-11-04
Professionally and lovingly compiled by The Yale Collection of Historical Sound Recordings (HSR) and The Indiana Historcal Society, this box set is PHENOMENAL!!!(probably the nicest I will ever have the pleasure of owning..if I could give it 10 STARS out of a possible 5 I would)!!! First of all it includes 3 CD's (69 recordings/songs), 1 BRILLIANT BOOK (Cole Porter History, songs, performers, disography, etc), all enclosed in a wonderfully padded box decorated with the cover art of never-surpassed Broadway artist/caricaturist, Al Hirschfeld. Second, it encompasses the very hard to find recordings of Cole Porters sassy songs of the 1930's; the decade that he broke onto and redefined Broadway. Third, you get to enjoy several different takes of 1 CP song performed by perhaps the best artists of all time, the likes of which include Judy Garland, Louis Armstrong, Teddi King, Lee Wiley, Billie Holiday, Mabel Mercer, Bill Evans, Sylvia Syms, Bobby Short, Fred Astaire, Artie Shaw, Rosemary Clooney, Benny Goodman Orchestra, Ethel Merman, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald,Tony Martin, James Stewart (yes! Jimmy Stewart sings), Lena Horne, and of course the man himself: COLE PORTER (and countless others). Not only will you have one of the best collections of Cole Porter's music but will also be introduced to the wonderful voices and jazzy styles of some artists you may have never been exposed to before-and I guarantee that this collecton will inspire you to go out and find their own recordigns too. Fourth, all the songs are organized under the subtitle of each 1930's CP Broadway musical for which it was written (i.e.The New Yorkers(1930), The Gay Divorce(32), Nymph Erant(33), Anything Goes(34), Miscellaneous Song(34), Adios Argentina(34), Jubilee (35), Born To Dance(36), Red, Hot, and Blue (36), Rosalie(37), You Never Know(38), The Sun Never Sets (38), Leave it To Me (38), The Man Who Came To Dinner (39), Broadway Melody of 1940 (39),Du Barry Was A Lady (39) -Finally, (as if this isn't enough) there is a FANTASTIC/VERY INFORMATIVE/TREASURE of a book enclosed in this 3-CD set that includes a wonderful history of Cole Porter, a break down of each song and (both it's own history as well as the very interesting stories of the peformers who sing it), an irreplacable CP Discography, and INCREDIBLE BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTOS seen throughout! Can I get any better than this? What are you waiting for. BUY IT and demand they re-release this collection. In the meantime, if your debating spending the extra cash for this now OOP collection, I can assure you-IT'S TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!
Collector's Item.......1999-03-17
This triple CD is a wonderful compilation of Cole Porter's songs, a MUST for any collector of Cole Porter's music. The producers have been brilliant in compiling variations of songs done throughout the years and one can compare the original songs rendered by Cole Porter himself or Ethel Merman among others in its original version and then go for the more modern sophisticated versions with better sound equipment. The comparisons are often delightful and undoubtedly ingenious. I highly recommend it.

Hard To Do Justice But A Decent Release.......2005-08-19
Compiling Hawk is no easy task considering the total output.. capturing a legend on 1 disc is an impossible task but you get 2 versions of Body and Soul(1939 and 1956)..the rest of the tracks spans his history with minor attention paid to the Beebop years(get Propers Box Set) and the remaining tracks on the CD has fine sounding sides from the early Mound City Blowers(1929),Fletcher Henderson(Hocus Poocus) ,Lionel Hampton tracks(one with Dizzy) and tracks from the 40's and 50's..overall a good listen..The DVD is very good featuting TV performances from the 1950's, a rare treat capturing great Jazz Men..Hawk's presence shines forth with his cool regal demeanor..worth the price of the set alone.
Superb.......2005-04-12
Hawkins is one of the greatest musicians America has produced. This is a worthy collection for someone who is new to his work. It has two versions of his breathtaking Body and Soul. It is splendid to see Hawkins, and other fantastic players, on the DVD, but BMG should be ashamed at the way this product is packaged. it's disgusting that they couldn't be bothered to identify the personnel on the DVD, and this Centennial series is a bit of a laugh: it offers a single CD where a dozen are deserved. If Jazz records sold well I'm sure they would give us more elaborate products. Think of this as simply a pretentiously packed "best of" disk.
NPR Got it Right........2005-03-27
Heard Terri Gross on NPR discussing this album back when it came out and decided to purchase it after hearing some of the samples on air. An excellent piece of work. We need more musicians like him in the mainstream.
