Amazon.com essential recording
The great irony of John Barry's Academy Award-winning score for Out of Africa (which also took the Oscar as Best Picture) is that it almost never was; director Sydney Pollack had originally envisioned the film with native African music, going as far as laying the indigenous score down as he was editing. But the weight of John Barry's arguments--not to mention his considerable track record and composing gifts--held sway, and the composer delivered on his intent: a lush, romantic masterpiece for the ages. --Jerry McCulley

Simply beautiful.......2007-01-11
Out of Africa is a CD with beautiful music. When I listen to it, I imagine myself in the nature of Africa. You will enjoy it!
CD has missing track.......2006-12-03
John Barry's compositions are pleasantly sweeping. There's nothing wrong with this album, just not really enough to recommend it.
I was puzzled to learn that some time between my buying the LP record and the issuing of this CD, the track "The Music of Goodbye (love theme from Out of Africa)" was omitted. It's not that this song, sung by Melissa Manchester, is a must-have; it's more that it's sneaky to leave off tracks when you reissue a soundtrack in another format.
Disappointed.......2006-11-10
I absolutely love the music from Out of Africa, but I do not recommend this CD at all. The sound quality is so poor that I could only bear listening to it once.
Worth Buying!.......2006-11-06
Highly recommended for those who love instrumental music. A lot of beautiful flute, strings and some piano and harp. Very contemplative and hauntingly beautiful music.
Great Album.......2006-11-04
For me, one of the best music of last decade. Romantic, full of sense. Please give a listen at least

Good Blend.......2007-05-17
If you are trying to decide between this recording and "Cloudburst," pick this one. The female voices do not have that shrieking quality that they do on "Cloudburst" and the soprano soloist from the BYU Singers is fantastic.
I do prefer the faster pacing of some of the pieces on the "Cludburst" recording, but this one is better all around.
My Favorite Choral Composer.......2007-03-09
Taken as a whole, Eric Whitacre is my favorite choral composer. I have to listen to his music at least once a week. As far as student choirs go, BYU does a stunning job for the most part. The few minor mistakes do not detract from the music. This is an essential album in my book.
whitacre.......2007-01-25
I bought this CD because it included the piece "Lux aurumque", which I feel must have been inspired because it transforms the listener into another realm. The other pieces are well done, too, but none reach me in the same way as "Lux aurumque". I love the tight overlapping harmonies and suspensions.
Choral excellence.......2007-01-07
I asked for, and received, this recording for Christmas based on the excellence of prior BYU performances and having really enjoyed performing Cloudburst in the past. This recording does not disappoint. It excels on every level. The choral writing is compelling and the performance of the BYU Singers is simply amazing. I've been around choral singing for many, many, years and the level of achievement here is stunning. Based solely on hearing recordings and seeing their recorded concerts on PBS, I would recommend anything from the BYU choral department.
Spine tingling.......2006-12-29
I was VERY suprised to hear this kind of sound from a college choir! The blend of the choir and the emotion behind the music is enough to give anyone goosebumps. From the soaring harmonies of "Water Night" to the subdued tenderness of "Sleep" to the playfulness of "Leonardo" this disc has something for everyone. A guaranteed Best Buy!

masters of classical music.......2007-03-26
A nice collection for the classical listener. Great variety of composers and the music quality of the cds are very good.
A good basic collection.......2006-11-10
With selections from numerous composers, it is an easy way to familiarize oneself with some of the most popular classical works and excerpts. A pleasant listen for the initiated too.
An excellent introduction to classical music.......2006-10-18
This is an excellent introduction to classical music. Well performed and presented.
Very Beautiful!!!!!1.......2006-10-05
If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.
Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22
I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...
My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.
I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!
I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

This overview of the heyday of the flagship band of 1970s country-rock illustrates why the genre became such a force in its time--and why it flagged as the decade progressed. Its ascent can be attributed to the vision and charisma of band cofounder Gram Parsons. Parsons's legend has grown to such a point that one must question its validity. Was he that crucial in shaping the genre? The answer is provided through the course of the first disc and a solid portion of the second in this smartly assembled double set. Parsons and partner Chris Hillman brought together influences ranging from Stax soul to the Everly Brothers to Hank Williams to create a sound that is inventive, inviting, clever, and a little weird. Parsons's two Burrito albums--1969's landmark The Gilded Palace of Sin and its patchwork follow-up, Burrito Deluxe--are here in their entirety, as are some Gram-era oddities. The handful of post-Parsons tracks that weigh down disc 2 augur country-rock's demise. Hillman and new recruit Rick Roberts create pleasant enough music that simply lacks the flair Parsons brought to nearly everything he recorded in his 26 years. --Steven Stolder

Hot Burritos! The Flying Burrito Bros. Anthology 1969-1972.......2007-06-08
Came when promised & in excellent condition.
The definitive overview of a seminal country-rock band.......2006-10-28
The "Gilded Palace of Sin" was a landmark country-rock LP that, in 1969, brought out all the best qualities of Gram Parsons as singer, composer and interpreter. His cronies were utmost professionals; their personal involvement and innovative musical contribution to Gram Parsons' vision heightened his achievements. Kudos - in particular - to Chris Hillman for his vocals, songwriting and guitar playing contributions, as well as to Sneeky Pete Kleinow who was always devising new ways to make his steel guitar soar and sing. A ***** album is ever there was one!
After the 11 songs from the first LP, this compilation includes a single A-side titled "The Train Song" which never did anything for me. I wonder who chose to let the Burritos be coproduced by Johnny Guitar Watson?
Rating: no rating !!
The follow-up LP, "Burrito Deluxe" appeared within 15 months of the first and, at the time, I found it to be a major let down. Although definitely a lesser work, I have grown more appreciative of it as its actual strenghts have grown on me.
The LP was pleasant and well above average, but after the magnificence of "Gilded Palace of Sin", it suffered by comparison. Also, I cannot help but feel that there was less drive, less enthusiasm from everybody involved. My favourite track is the "cover" of the Stones' "Wild Horses" (which could actually have been co-composed by Parsons). Other favourites are "Cody, Cody" and "Lazy Days". I would rate this album *** ½.
The second CD begins with seven tracks that first appeared on "Farther Along", "Close up the Honky Tonks" and Gram Parsons' "Sleepless Nights".
These tracks seem to be work-in-progress of country covers; they are rather well recorded but they sound average and rather perfunctory to me when compared with the songs recorded by the original artists. I do not think that these recordings would have been released at the time had Parsons not perished most tragically and so young. Rating : **.
Tracks 8 - 17 were released on the Flying Burrito Brothers' third, eponymous LP. This is the second line-up from the band, with Rick Roberts "replacing" Gram Parsons. Well, Parsons could not really be "replaced" but Hillman obviously did not want to remain the sole leader/singer/songwriter of the band. Rick Roberts was a good singer and a good writer to boot. While the music on this record leans more towards the West Coast / singer-songwriter scene than towards Parson's vision, I must say that I have liked this 1971 LP at first listen. The album is chock-full of good songs, well sung and well arranged. The well-known Haggard cover "White Line Fever" is really superior to the Parsons sung "demo" covers of two Merle Haggard's tunes placed at the beginning of this CD. Colorado, Four Days of Rain, All alone, ... are among my favourites but there really is no dud track on this album. I rate it *****. This does not mean that I find it as good (and certainly not as influential) as the "Gilded Palace of Sin" but it very good in its own sweet way. I would say that this LP holds its ground when compared with favourites of mine such as "Pickin' Up The Pieces" (Poco) or, well, the first LP by The Eagles. It is also a splendid opportunity to appreciate Hillman's characteristically exquisite bass guitar playing one more time. Sneeky Pete Kleinow also shines throughout while Leadon ... well Leadon is always good on whatever stringed instrument happens to lay around.
Track # 18 is a version of Gene Clark's "Here Tonight" (covered and sung by Hillman on the third album) and recorded by Clark himself with the Flying Burrito Records (and also much earlier on his very first solo Columbia LP). I prefer Clark's rendition to Hillman's but I wonder why this take appeared on "Close Up The Honky Tonks" because it has much more of a polished Byrds / LA sound. Anyway, it's pretty good to have around. I rate this track *****.
The last two tracks were recorded live for the fourth LP titled "Last of The Flying Burrito brothers" which I duly bought upon release. Although less lethargic than the tracks from "Close Up the Honky Tonks", they are not that remarkable either. I would rate this, their fourth album for A&M, ** ½.
It should be pointed out that the sound of this CD is very, very good. The booklet is also informative, including quotes from Chris Hillman.
This compilation is THE definitive overview of the Flying Burrito Brothers' oeuvre!
HOT BURRITOS!!!!.......2005-08-02
I agree with the previous reviewer who said that this collection is almost too complete. What you have here is the Burrito's first 3 studio albums, and several non-album tracks. It is a beautiful set, but much of it is sub-par, unfortunately.
Here are some of the upsides to this collection: You get what is (ironically) the only American release of their seminal debut on compact disc, The Gilded Palace of Sin. You're typically going to pay twice what you would for this whole set just to get the import of this album alone. So it's safe to say that this set is a definite "best value". While I feel like The Gilded Palace of Sin is the only album you really need by the Burritos, you do get to hear their version of the Stone's classic Wild Horses, which ws actually released before the stones version, oddly enough. The packaging is really nice, with several unreleased photos of the band, and stories and reflections from surviving members.
Some downsides to the collection: in my estimation, this set is roughly 2/3 filler. They just didn't capture that dynamite sound after The Gilded Palace of Sin. Sure, they had a few shining moments, even after Gram's departure, but I don't find myself straying too far past the first dozen or so tracks of disc 1 on a regular basis.
It is sad and ironic that this is the only CD version of The Gilded Palace of Sin available domestically. This great slab of Classic Americana has been an import only for years! Why, I do not know. You just listen to it, and you get the imagery of riding a huge motorcycle through a desert highway...leather jacket with the tassles...boots...a walrus moustache, and not a care in the world.
The bottom line: if you're looking to save money, and don't mind a considerable amount of filler, buy this set. If you have the money to spare, and don't want the filler, splurge a little and get the import of Gilded Palace. Either way, you simply cannot afford to let this album, in one format or another, pass you by. Go out right now and buy this!!
Breaking Up With The Flying Burrito Brothers.......2005-03-06
The Flying Burrito Brothers represented some of Gram Parsons' finest music. Five of the tracks here are absolutely sublime, and four of them kick off this 2-CD set. The first four tunes on Disc 1 alone are nearly worth the cost of this album. They're literally about as good as the Gram Parsons experience gets. The Everly-drenched harmonies shine especially on "Christine's Tune" and "Sin City", the pedal steel guitar gives the music a psychedelic boost, and Gram's sensitivity to songs of torment and loss really come out.
Long ago, I was embroiled in a difficult relationship that causes the occasional wound even today. In the midst of that emotional tempest, Gram Parsons was the guy I kept turning to, and not always for the healthiest reasons. His voice was so lonely and laced with sadness, as if it were my own. I listened to his music not to heal, but to wallow. I knew my pain would get no better, yet I was going to keep going back to her for more abuse -- so I knew I was a pretty sad sack. Yet there was something so beautiful about the relationship that I didn't want it to end.
That relationship is the main reason I couldn't listen to "Hot Burrito #1" for years. It bore a pit right in my stomach and ceased any kind of meaningful activity as I just listened to the song. Listen to the lyrics and you'll know what I mean. Parsons cuts right to the heart of the painful beauty with his voice and his interpretation, and to have such emotional depth of feeling at such a young age is pretty astonishing.
However, it was a momentum he had trouble sustaining with this band. The last half of Disc 1 is decidedly below the sky-high bar raised with the first half, with the exception of "Wild Horses". By the end of Disc 2, which covers the output of the Burritos with Rick Roberts, they sounded like an bad Eagles knockoff instead of a top Eagles influencer. In their early days, the Burritos were just like the Eagles, only good.
However, I knew I was coming out the other side of my bad relationship and would be OK when I didn't need to listen to this (and other CDs) nearly every day, just so I could further torture myself with thoughts of her. It seemed disloyal to say goodbye to the Burritos, so I did it slowly, but gradually it came out of my stereo and back on the shelf. Occasionally I'll pull it out and give it a listen for old-times' sake, but it doesn't bring back the old feelings the way it used to. In a weird sense, it almost diminishes the quality of the album a bit.
Bottom line, this CD set will kill you softly if you're going through a tough breakup. Unlike "Blood On The Tracks", which achieves the same effect through Dylan's lyrics, Hot Burritos is purely visceral, with painful, sorrow-filled emotion. But there aren't enough of these tunes to sustain this entire album.
Great music: where country and rock first merged!.......2005-02-10
What distinguishes this from the earlier Farther Along collection is the inclusion of their third album - in its entirety - and Hillman's music really seems to have matured on that one. I like the earlier stuff too, but having never heard the third album prior to purchasing this one, I was really impressed by it. "Can't You Hear Me Calling," and "Tried So Hard" are two of the best they ever recorded, and their version of "White Line Fever" is better than Merle's. The first two albums are also here, plus more. Great musicianship and music indeed! If psychedelic cowboy music is your thing, you won't find better than this.

If you like your Wagner served up in bleeding chunks or if you're simply in a hurry to hear the tunes, then this compilation is for you. The performances, drawn from the Polygram (mainly Deutsche Grammophon) back catalog, are for the most part authoritative. They feature the likes of Herbert von Karajan, with the Berlin Philharmonic, and Karl Böhm, with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (and chorus), in extracts from recordings of complete operas, and conductors Giuseppe Sinopoli, Otto Gerdes, and Antal Doráti in some of the more familiar overtures and preludes. Singing, without which it is impossible to get the full flavor of Wagner's work, is skirted whenever possible: this is an unapologetic tribute to Wagner the orchestral genius. At times the salesmanship is a little overblown--the glitzy packaging includes a cover shot of the helicopters from Apocalypse Now--and the sound, some of it from very good originals, seems to have been juiced with a little added digital reverb, resulting in an overall glassiness. The gaps between tracks are minimized, disco style, so there's no dead air, and the whole thing has an Entertainment Tonight feel to it. Were he around, Wagner would have screamed bloody murder, then happily taken his cut of the action. For today's on-the-go listener, this may well be the most practical way to enjoy Wagner's music, but we won't be happy until it motivates at least one newcomer to seek out a recording of a complete opera. Anyone who does that will find out what "apocalypse" really means. --Ted Libbey

Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11
I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!
Awesome collection!.......2007-01-10
This is a great collection of some of Wagner's most memorable songs for those of you who do not want to buy the whole opera's for some of his works.
Helicopters? Marines?.......2006-12-05
Do those infotainment marketing mavens ever get it right? Talk about Hollywood disconnect! Not only are the helicopters irrelevant, but to quote from the gushy drivel on the jacket, "The gripping power of Richard Wagner's music was demonstrated with spectacular effect in...Apocalpse Now, when the "Ride of the Valkyries' became synonymous with the chilling journey of Marine 'Huey' helicopters into battle..."
Marine? Marine? Them Hueys in the movie was ARMY Air Cav, slick! "First of the ninth--air mobile." If you're going to dally down that primrose path, at least get it right.
Better yet, drop the choppers. Most people who listen to Wagner probably realize that quality of an artistic work has a mystically inverse relationship to the number of helicopters contained in it.
As for the music, it is good, but the operatic equivalent of sound bites, which may be just right for people who are new to Wagner or just can't take very much of him. Hmm...perfect for a helicopter ride, perhaps?
A great addition to my music collection.......2006-07-20
This CD takes the place of all my other Wagner music. VERY well done. Somehow I didn't realize that there were two cds in the package--what a pleasant surprise! Of the two cds, I like the first one best, but they are both good. I listen to this cd daily on my way to work. Stirring! I am so glad that I purchased this. Some purists might have a problem with the fact that some of the selections are not there in their entirety. I have no problem with that though. I recommend this to anyone who loves Wagner.
Quintessential Wagner.......2006-05-15
Okay, so I like Wagner. I LOVE "Ride Of The Valkyries". Do I want to go out and buy every single stinkin thing Wagner did? No. If you are a die-hard Wagner fan you probably will not think much of this collection.
But if you like Wagner and appreciate "Ride Of The Valkyries", and maybe require it in just a little more substance than what is included in "Apocolypse Now Redux", then this is what you want. The extra tracks are bonuses and are quite good. Meets my needs, presentation great, performance excellent. I recommend it for anyone that needs a Wagner fix.

The films of director Zhang Yimou have a panoramic sweep to them that deftly creates a fantastical vision of ancient Chinese culture for the screen. Yimou's eye for color and sense of drama demands a score that conveys the emotion, tradition and action of his movies. Here Shigeru Umebayashi tells each part of the story with a mix of traditional flute, drums, string instruments and, to a lesser degree, orchestra and moody-sounding synthesizers. The lilting melody of "Lovers" is particularly effective, simmering with a passion that leaves no doubt about the tone of the scene; it comes back to dramatic effect at other times in the film as well--the soundtrack closes with a soaring version of it by soprano Kathleen Battle. Similar to but not as heavy as Tan Dun's occasionally overbearing work on Yimou's film Hero, Umebayashi leans toward the subtle for this love story, and the film is better for it. - Tad Hendrickson

Beautiful score.......2006-11-13
I truly enjoy this CD. The music is enchanting, emotion-evoking, and powerful. I love to listen to it in order to relax before going to bed. I recommend this CD to anyone.
A gorgeous film score.......2006-09-24
"House of Flying Daggers" is one of my favorite Asian films from the past five years. One of the main reasons I love the film is the sumptuous classical film score by Shigeru Umebayashi. The classical score reminded me a great deal of the score for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The operatic ballad by Kathleen Battle is stunning. I don't normally like most opera music but I definitely enjoyed listening to Kathleen Battle. This is a lovely cd to relax to with a hot cup of tea and a good book.
GREAT MUSIC........2006-05-18
Not only was House of Flying Daggers a wonderful movie, but the music was breathtaking. If for no other reason purchase the CD and enjoy Kathleen Battle's rendition of Lovers.
Never Gets Boring.......2005-12-25
This album has everything good music needs. It's driving, subtle, powerful and soft. It is a truly amazing work of art. It gets the emotions of the characters and the events of the story out perfectly. A ballet could be performed to this score.

Missing Some Major Duets!! .......2005-07-26
These tracks are all excellent but frankly several major country duets are not here!! Where on earth are Kenny Rogers and Dottie West?? Instead we get Rogers with Sheena Easton and the Rogers/Easton combo makes it almost entirely a pop recording and it should not be on this package. Buck Owens & Rose Maddox have a track but where is Buck with his far more famous duet partner Susan Raye? The Merle Haggard - Janie Fricke track should not have been included since she really only just sings harmony on the record. Why aren't Jimmy Wakely & Margaret Whiting who started the male/female star duet craze in 1949 with Slipping Around here or Kitty Wells & Red Foley, the first superstar duet? And where are Ferlin Husky & Jean Shepard, Jack Greene & Jeannie Seely, David Houston & Barbara Mandrell, Bobby Bare & Skeeter Davis, Roy Drusky & Priscilla Mitchell, Don Gibson & Dottie West, Johnny Duncan & Janie Fricke, to name just a few of the famous country duos of yore. Instead we have too many tracks with the same artists here. It's a very good package but it should have been a great and classic one.

A well-kept secret.......2007-05-18
Everyone wants to have a crack at the "bleeding chunks" eventually, and while I love the flashier Stoky and Furtwangler approach, I wouldn't want to be without the Boult. He's a great Wagnerian, strange as it may seem. Who could blame him for not wanting to go down in history merely as the finest Holstian? As long as this stays in print, Ormandy will still be considered the least sexy conductor. (I heard CBS researchers found an Ormandy fan once!)
Essential Wagner.......2006-06-17
As a child, this set was my first experience of Wagner's music, and it made quite an impression on me. However, as I grew older and began to collect the full operas I felt I could surely do better than Adrian Boult and the British for a collection of the preludes, overtures, and orchestral music from the operas. I was wrong. I have yet to here any recordings that can match the power and intensity as demonstrated in these discs from Boult and the LSO (and LPO). The Meistersinger prelude alone is worth the price, and the only version of the prelude to Tristan which outdoes the one here is Bohm's live 1966 Tristan. The Solti, Karajan, and Klemperer highlight discs have their moments (and truthfully, I do prefer Solti and Karajan for the "Ring" highlights), but their contributions are greatest in the full operas, and overall, they simply can't muster the power and intensity that Boult brings to these preludes, overtures, etc.
Even if you have other compilations of Wagner's music in "bleeding chunks", I can assure you they don't come close to this one; and with two discs (the second containing mostly music from Parsifal and the "Ring") at 14 bucks, there is absolutely no excuse not to have this essential recording. So go ahead and buy this disc, never buy another Wagner compilation again, and with the money you save get started on the more important task at hand: the full operas.
Excellent Wagner from a surprising source ... or maybe not!.......2004-09-27
Does Sir Adrian Boult conjure up of images of Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughn Williams, but not Wagner? You're not alone! Nevertheless, this is a double CD set not to be missed! Many years ago, I was listening to a classical radio music station in NYC that was playing the music of Wagner. The performance was so good, that I wouldn't leave the radio until I found out the name of the conductor. When the announcer said the conductor was Sir Adrian Boult, I was quite surprised. I had recordings of English music from Sir Adrian on Angel/EMI, but I never associated that conductor with Wagner. Having been blessed with a friend who had knowledge of classical music way beyond his years, I gave him a call to find out more about the recording. He told me that, Boult had solid expertise in the area of Germanic music, but, in England, had been overshadowed in that repertoire by Otto Klemperer. He told me not to be surprised about Boult's very fine Wagner, it was an excellent recording to purchase and, indeed, search out Sir Adrian's wonderful performance of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (now available on Vanguard). Fast-forward many years and I find myself browsing through Amazon for a recording of Wagner's Overtures and Preludes. Like everyone else I know, I foolishly jettisoned my LPs in the 1990s and have been "back-filling" ever since. Well, I was able to obtain this splendid set for less than $7 per CD! There are a total of 18 selections covering most of Wagner's operas including five excerpts from the Ring Cycle. The performances are excellent coming from no less than three British orchestras, and the sound is top-shelf EMI. Sir Adrian's pacing is measured and his vision is broad and sensitive, highlighting the beauty and grandeur --rather than just the fire-- of this glorious music. I heartily recommend this two-CD set, and at this price, I think it's a steal.
Go For Boult.......2003-07-08
Sir Adrian Boult is best known for his recordings of the British repertoire, and his performances, particularly of Holst's "The Planets" and Elgar's Symphonies and Orchestral Works, are legendary. But Boult was also an excellent conductor of Beethoven, Brahms and Wagner, and this 2-CD set collects the Overtures and Preludes of the latter German titan. These stereo recordings from the early to mid-1970s with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, and London Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras are truly first rate. EMI's set compares nicely in terms of price, quality and musical offerings with competing sets by DG (Bohm, Kubelik, et al) and Sony (Ormandy & Szell). You might have reservations about getting German music conducted by a Brit, but you really can't go wrong with Boult.
Memorable and dramatic- A must have for Wagner fans.......2000-03-20
I bought this cd for the following reasons: 1 I'm a Wagner fan, 2 the cover looks exquisite and 3 I wanted to hear a "prelude" since it sounds fancy and never heard one. The result is great cd. The Tannhauser overture, Tristan and Isolde prelude and Lohengrin Prelude to act 3 are all very excellent. Excerpts from the Ring of the Nibelunge aren't as good as I had anticipated but are still enjoyable. The music speaks the tales of Wagner's operas. Just hear it, as slow and irksome as they maybe, these preludes make you feel the tragic love of Tristan and Isolde, the epic odyssey of Lohengrin and the holy, heavenly spirit in Parsifal as he discovers the Holy Grail. Buy this CD and you won't regret it. Except that one bit from Gotterdammerung, Siegfried's Funeral March. It does'nt quite have the feel of grand disaster as it did in John Boorman's film Excalibur. If you're hoping to find that version(which is better) stick with the Classics Go To The Movies Vol 2 cd. But all the other pieces on this CD are excellent. Go and buy this CD- now !

Customer Reviews:
This Could Be..........2007-03-02
This could be the best Satriani album of all time, bested only by Surfing With The Alien. It is nearly perfect. Scratch that, it IS perfect. You can listen to it from beginning to the end without skipping one track. Worth every penny. Highly recommended. I also recommend Surfing With The Alien, Crystal Planet, and The Extremist. All are spectacular. Thanks Joe!
Probably Satch's best work........2006-05-07
I have heard all of Satch's albums (minus 'Time machine') and for me this is probably the greatest album he has ever done. If you've heard 'Surfing with the alien', this album will be no different, but Satch has many more different, interesting songs here. Straight-ahead shred-rock ('Back to shalla-bal' and 'One big rush'), some funk ('Bells of lal part 2' and 'Strange'), a bit of folk/country ('The feeling' and 'Phone call') and a bit of 80s metal ('Big bad moon'). Don't worry, 'cause Satch still uses great guitaring and solos. For me Satch is great at making amazing solos, but also making them very musical, and not just a load of notes thrown together. He is very talented at composing songs, as well as being a great guitarist. He also includes his famous double handed tapping tecnique in the beautiful 'Day at the beach' and the not-so-good 'Headless', and the complex 'hand-holding-the-neck and hammer-on' tecnique in the fantastic 'Mystical potato head groove thing'.
But also, Satch does a bit of singing now. Some may not like the idea of that and I wasn't sure if i'd like it at first, but I found some of the vocal tracks to be just as enjoyable, from the punky 'Can't slow down' to the ballad of 'I believe' they are all great, but one of my favourites is the mid-tempo rocker 'Ride'. He also sings in 'Phone call', 'Big bad moon' and 'Strange'. Satch's voice isn't exactly fantastic, but it's not as bad as everyone says, his voice is suited to the songs (maybe with the exception of 'I believe', as he sometimes goes a bit flat in it). You can still sing the songs, no matter who sings them.
So, if you want to listen to Joe Satriani, i'd try 'Surfing with the alien' first, but this is also a good album to try as well and my favourite of Satriani. It just has a wide variety of songs and it's a great 70-minute listen. If you're a fan of guitar or just rock music in general, you will definately enjoy this album. This is Satch at is very best.
Geez, do I even have to explain?.......2006-03-29
Its Joe Freakin' Satriani, need I say more? In 1989, s**tty hair metal jokes like Warrant and Def Leopard were fading away from the music scene, Joe was thriving because he had (and still has) tons of talent and substance in his work. This isn't exactly metal, but its still great music. It ranges from lush melodies, blues, and straight up hard rock. Whenever I listen to this album, I feel like I'm playing the old-school Sonic games or watching a violent anime from 1992. I'd love to see those pathetic axemen Munky and Head from Kornhole compete with the godly Joe, Joe would behead these retards with his guitar (not really, but musically).
Best songs on this album: ALL OF THEM!!
If you're looking for some rock that diversifies in genres and blows your mind, "Flying in a Blue Dream" is definitely for you.
Satriani soars.......2006-03-08
Guitar god Satriani's 1989 release "Flying in a Blue Dream" is just outstanding.
He just rocks from the beginning to the end of the disc.
From the opening number, the title track "Flying in a Blue Dream" to the final track "Into the Light" this is a well-balanced recording.
This is his first venture into singing. "Can't Slow Down", "Big Bad Moon" and the hit "I Believe" are all Satriani on vocals and he doesn't do too bad of a job.
I missed this disc when it first came out and I just picked it up at the local music store and I'm glad I did.
Check this classic out.
Good Job Joe.......2006-02-21
Alright, this album is one of Satriani's best, and i do enjoy listening to it alot. He has some good tracks laid down on this album and they are very well put together. The first three songs on this album are my favorite, and a couple others. Joe has some fantastic shred skills and he shows them in this album. He is overall one of the greatest guitar players of all time.
I would suggest you to also check out some G3. G3 is Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and a special guest that they have, either Eric Johnson or John Petrucci. It is all preformed live. These albums are some of the most shred-tastic things that i have ever heard.
