After Antonio Carlos Jobim, no Brazilian composer is more celebrated in America than Ivan Lins. This is mostly due to his jazz and pop musician friends who recognize his genius and record his music. Unlike Jobim, though, Lins hasn't experienced a breakthrough with a bona-fide pop hit. That could change with A Love Affair: The Music of Ivan Lins, an 11-song tribute that boasts Sting singing a brand-new Lins composition and Chaka Khan putting a funky spin on "Crue Cra Corroro," retitled with English lyrics as "So Crazy for the Love." Smooth-jazz fans will appreciate turns by Peter White and the late Grover Washington Jr., but it's the vocalists that make this tribute a must for Ivan Lins fans. Brenda Russell, one of his best American collaborators, delivers "Nocturne" as sensually as anything on her own Paris Rain, and her lyric to "You Move Me to This" is a real winner in the hands of Lisa Fischer and "D Train" Williams. However, Lins's patented combination of romance, jazzy harmonies, and Brazilian pop are best personified on the last three tunes with Freddy Cole, Dianne Reeves, Joe Sample, and (on the final pair of tunes) the honored composer himself. --Mark A. Ruffin

5 out of 5 stars A Love Affair: The Music Of Ivan Lins .......2007-04-02

I discovered this album because I'm a fan of Vanessa Williams, who contributes one track. Nicely produced with various performers and varied styles within the Brazilian jazz idiom.
Some real nice tunes and renderings.
One of the highlights for me, not surprisingly, is Vanessa's offering, "Love Dance," which is a killer ballad, delivered with such delicacy and grace as only Vanessa can. A stunning track. Worth the price of the CD, alone.

3 out of 5 stars A Love Affair.......2007-02-06

I could not think of a song of Ivan Lins when I heard 'She Walks This Earth" sung by Sting. This song sells the CD and as for me....It was worth the purchase. After that, I could'nt get into it as much as I tried. All the artist on the CD were wonderful. It's just not a CD that requires listening to, with passion, more than once or twice. Sting....YES. Perhaps it's over my head and I need to listen again.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good collection.......2007-01-10

I bought this for the Sting cover (She Walks This Earth), but the whole disc ended up being an unexpected treat.

5 out of 5 stars Simply one of the finest CDs ever recorded........2006-05-15

Incredible music, brilliantly produced and performed. A masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars Every time you listen to it.......2005-02-17

This album shows that music can be simply beautiful and gets better with time.

I would swear that everytime I listen to it, I like it more and more.

Plus, it will send you seeking out more of Ivan Lins work. I discovered this by accident and now wonder what other great music I am missing out on.

Album Description

This special edition of Brazilian Love Affair 5 features no less than 8 exclusive tracks from Far Out artists - both established classic names as well as fresh new talent. Whether it's the hazy vibes of an afternoon by the beach with Democustico's 'O Sonho', a smoky evening at infamous Rio jazz club Misturafina with Azymuth's 'Te Querendo', or a late night burning up the dancefloor with Grupo Batuqueâ's jubilant 'Ida E Volta', each one perfectly captures the winter heat of Brazil.

Label main-man Joe Davis also dug deep in the Far Out crates for a few gems from the past: Azymuth's Jose Roberto Bertrami and Aleuda team up for a slice of catchy eccentric fusion with 'Itacuruca', the ever reliable Roc Hunter has his Mamond project revisited with the sublime 'Cafe Sem' and the previously deleted Kyoto Jazz Massive remix of Friend's From Rio's 'Sob O Marâ' also gets a welcome rewind.

5 out of 5 stars Loaded with Fresh Material.......2004-11-07

I've been a fan of Far Out Record's artsits for some time. But the Brazilian Love Affair CD's were a series that seemed to elude me. And what a shame that was, since this series is actually one of the very best in the market of nu-Brazilian music. The series now spans 5 volumes, six if you include the Kenny Dope mixed tribute, and the 5th volume is every bit as worthy an entry as the others. What I look for in the compilations are the exclusive cuts and tracks. This one was anything but short of those with the first 6 cuts being originals, 8 overall out of 13!

Of course Far Out has an advantage over many of the others in that the cuts are often features from their label's artists. The CD starts out with Democustico's "O Sonho", a track that admittedly didn't really grab me even though Gabriela Geluda's voice reminded me of Janice Andrade's. Troubleman's "Paz" followed up - a very cool and dark cut featuring Nina Miranda (Smoke City) on vocals. Want something eerily similar - check Arkestra One's "I Really Want You". Os Ipanemas and Azymuth, heroes for Far Out Records, come up some downtempo loungish cuts - good for setting the mood. I didn't fall for the remix to "Suspeita", but I really dug "Te Querendo"; you can feel Roc Hunter's influence and I can't wait to hear the vocal on Azymuth's 30 year anniversary cd! Another gem was Sabrina Malheiro's "Estacao Verao" which has a pure Brazil loop to her singing and musicianship that I loved - although the Kenny Dope remix gives it an awesome bossa beat. Meanwhile "Chuva"'s rather solid although I preferred the clubbed up, latin guitar remix found on Brazilution 5.2. Finally... what's a Far Out compilation without Joyce or Marcos Valle? Quality music with Joyce's trademark dancing vocals but this time done with the coolness of Bugge Weseltoft. What more can I say about Joyce without exposing my obvious bias! Supremely talented and amazingly creative singer. And Marcos Valle - what a fantastic comeback he's had since the late 90's.

I highly recommend not just this volume, but the entire "Brazilian Love Affair" series. There are many other good tuens here - check Grupo Batuque's "Ida E Volta", a cut that pulls parallels with their "Taruma" or how about the nice vocal work done in "Tarde Em Itacuraca"? That's not to say that this CD wasn't totally without fault - I dig the Kyoto Jazz Massive remix to Nair Candia/Jaime Alem's "Sob O Mar" but for some reason, Brazilian Love Affair chopped the first 12 seconds of the remix. I didn't like that mainly becuase that percussion build-up is a signature of Kyoto Jazz Massive's sound and it's like an art to their music - just check their "Calmaria". That's not enough to drop it down some pegs, and if you dig this release and the other BLA's, you might also like the individual releases by the artists involved, the Kenny Dope tribute (oddly, vol. 5 is also listed as a tribute), Brazilution 5.2 and "Brazilian Love Songs".

Album Description

'Brazilian Love Affair 4' is part of the world's leading Brazilian music series compiled by the UK's premier Brazilian DJ and aficionado and head of Far Out Records, Joe Davis. Far Out is one of the world's leading Brazilian labels with an influence on Brazilian music most labels based in Rio would die for. Joe fills us in:

"Brazilian Love Affair is a good summary of all the styles and current trends of Brazilian music and therefore Far Out's roster. On Volume 4 you've got the classic, contemporary sounds of Brazil from Far Out artists Marcos Valle, Joyce, and Azymuth, as well as the more electronic dance side that we release on 12" such as Democustico, 4 Hero, and Osunlade's remix of Grupo Batuque. I think that Brazilian music makes excellent chill out music too because it's very melancholic...it has complex chord structures and harmonies bursting with soul and melody."

'Brazilian Love Affair 4' also includes forgotten gems unearthed by Joe on his 80th trip to Brazil and cuts from Patricia Marx, Max de Castro and Jairzinho Oliveira all signed to Brazilian label Trama.

This is as authentic a picture of Brazilian music you will find. As Joe says; "I know of supposed "Brazilian" compilations that don't even have one Brazilian artist on them. Every track on this compilation has either been made by a Brazilian or produced in Brazil. Imagine if in Brazil someone released a compilation of UK music with just Brazilian artists on... it would be a sham. 'Brazilian Love Affair 4 is the real deal."

4 out of 5 stars Quality Cuts on a Quality Label.......2004-12-03

Far Out Records has grown into quote a fantastic label. This year marked it's 10th anniversary and they had a couple of nice tributes to the artists and musicians that have helped make "Far Out" records synonomous with "quality releases". This is off of their "Brazilian Love Affair" franchise, a compilation series which usually serves as a real sampler for most of their artists. It's similar to the way Ziribuiboom/Crammed did their samplers (Brasil 2Mil, etc.) or even Schema with their Break&Bossa's.

This one, the fourth, was pretty strong and had some real quality cuts on it. It starts out with Patricia Marx slow jam which features Joao Parahyba (think Suba/Trio Mocoto) that was popular in summer of 2002 then follows up with a sort of jazzy track by Azymuth with Sabrina Melheiros (is it her husband that's with Mamond?)... although admittedly that wasn't a song that really got me. The remix to "Na Batida do Agogo" followed and it is a pretty cool cut (Grupo Batuque), you can hear it on Brazilution 5. Other cool cuts on this one were Joyce's harmonic "Todos Os Santos", Democustico's sitar laden xinga filled "A Sereia", a soulful percussion heavy track by Nature's Plan, and the cd winds down with a vintage take of Vera Cruz by Vox Populi. Also - Mamond's "Preguiciman" is included - that's a cut another great track with guitar solos and a nice little bossa beat.

All in all, I definitely recommend this release - much like I recommend all 5 of the Brazilian Love Affair CD's. This label that features such great artists from the old school and new school, like Troubleman, Joyce, Os Ipanemas, Azymuth, Marcos Valle and several others, knows how to put out some great music! The quality of the cuts makes up for it being just one disc - a few other series, like Brazilectro, Nova Latino, etc. are all double disc sets. If you dig this, be sure to check Kenny Dope's "Brazilika", a tribute to Far Out recordings, and Brazilution 5.2. Also, you might want to check out some of the label's individual artist's.

5 out of 5 stars A Brazilian Love Affair..........2007-02-03

For those that want to know, this rating is the 'Domestic' Version. This is an excellent CD from Mr. Duke. It really does capture the South American Flavor that is Brazil (the natives call it Bra-seel!)

It's a little expensive right now ($19US+). But, for now, you may not be able to find it cheaper anywhere else! Five stars for "A Brazilian Love Affair..."

5 out of 5 stars George Duke...He's the best because he's himself.......2004-01-03

Who were the pop, funk, jazz, or rock musicians playing IN BRAZIL with BRAZILIAN musicians in the late 1970's and early 1980's? The list isn't that extensive, but you have to put George Duke up there on that list. This album is outstanding from end to end. The improvisation is super tight, the songwriting is excellent, the overall playing is impressive, and the spiritual vibe of this project is simply lovely. A true "labor of love" that works spectacularly well over twenty-years later.

Bravo George!

5 out of 5 stars 25 years of listening to this album, and I still love it........2003-10-05

I bought this record in my hometown of Copenhagen when I was about 12 or 13 years of age. Ever since then, it's had a special place in my heart, an I never get tired of listening to it. I'm glad to see that it's been rediscovered as a classic, (eps. after years of friends telling me it was a cheezy record -- before jazz, funk, and latin became mainstream in the clubs again ;)

The keyboard solos on this record are mind blowingly melodic, and some of the meanest funkyist trombone you'll ever hear is on this record. But the bass playing tops it all. If you are a bass player, this record is a must; a brilliant example of how to be funky, melodic, and totally unique and innovative with every note played. Funkier than anyone who ever thumbed or slapped a bass string. (I believe it's Byron Miller...?)

5 out of 5 stars GRRREAT!.......2003-09-27

"Brazillian love Affair" sounds pretty natural for Duke-he isn't that concerned with trying to please any audiance with funk or jazz.Instead he follows his always present latin-American
heart with tunes such as "Summer Breezin'","Cravo E Canela",
"I Need You Know" and the lovely "Ao Qui Vai Nascer".Also of note
of the funky "Sugar Loaf Mountain" and the dancable, pulsing tital
song.Overall an artistic statement of intent for George Duke and
probably a good starting point too!

5 out of 5 stars The Sun Is Shining!.......2002-11-20

This Album is all I need to take a rest after a hard working day. It seems you are feeling the warm brazilian sun on your skin. The mix of jazz, funk, fusion and brazilian rhythmes takes you into a new dimension of music. What can I say more? Here it yourself!

I already liked "Brazilian Love Affair" on the CD by George Duke. Normally, I am let down by Remix CD's, but in this case, I was pleasantly surprised - it's very good! The product (in this case the CD contains 6 mixes) is a good value - and a great sound. If you can get it at a good price, then do so. I rate this disc Five Stars!

This quick review is not about the music on this CD; that'd be redundant; we all know about the great songs performed here and about all the great singers/musicians invited here by Jason Miles; this review is just to express my admiration for this kind of Hybrid CDs; this one is waaaaaaaaay sharper than the regular CD; you can even notice instruments here and there that you couldn't hear on the previous (regular) CD; anyway, this is a great investment in your Ivan's collection.
